Nigerian Basket Ball Player Shot Dead in Texas

A former Nigerian national basketball player was shot dead in a botched burglary in Texas before Thanksgiving.Chinedu Onyeuku, 29, and another person allegedly tried to break into a residence on Rio Grande Street in Plano on November 21 and was shot and killed by the homeowner. His accomplice ran away without injury. Police are still trying to track the second burglar.

The Nigeria Basketball Federation posted a statement saying that the 29-year-old athlete played basketball for the team that qualified for the London 2012 Olympics. However, Onyeuku was not on the Olympic roster and did not actually compete.

The statement reads: '[His] passion for playing with D’Tigers was deep-seated and he will be greatly missed. The federation joins his family and team mates to mourn a departed son, father, husband and great patriot.'

  1. What was he thinking trying to break into someone's home. Was he a common thief?

  7. Very stupid. Texans are allowed guns without licences in their homes. What was he thinking? Too bad. I feel sorry for his family.

  12. this story is not complete and Ladun, I think you are doing this man and his family a disservice by not reporting that the police think he might have been set up.
What if the other guy told him to follow him to visit a friend and he got himself tangled in this mess?

    1. Exactly my point. People jump to conclusion without getting the correct information.

  15. I do not know him personally, but I know his family and they are wonderful family. His father is a nice man and so also is his brother - and the little time I spent with them, I know they are amazing. Please do not judge - it is one thing to say he was shot while robbing a home. The whole truth to the story has not been published, we are just judging by what is published for us to read....There is the family to consider before we all jump to conclusion, so until the whole TRUTH is revealed, let us not jump to conclusion..May he rest in peace
