Imo State Boils As Ex-Militants Burns State Specialist Hospital, State Security Network

Rampaging ex-militants protesting the shooting of their colleague on Wednesday set ablaze the Imo State Specialist Hospital, Owerri.

The incident, which occurred around midday consequently caused pandemonium in the area as hospital workers and residents of nearby buildings fled the inferno which threatened adjourning structures.

Mostly affected by the inferno were the hospital’s casualty department emergency unit, theatre as well as seven vehicles and tricycles parked in the complex.

Trouble, the Imo State Police Command Public Relations Officer, Mr. Andrew Enwerem, said started when a sharp misunderstanding arose between some ex-militants who had recently surrendered their arms at the Government House, Owerri and some members of the state Security Network led to a free for all.

The PPRO said during the fight between the two groups, one of the ex-militants was shot by the members of the security network and he was quickly brought to the specialist hospital for urgent medical attention.

Frustrated by an alleged delay of the staff of the hospital to attend to their colleague, the aggrieved ex-militants went berserk and consequently set the hospital complex ablaze.

Enwerem added that the restive youths also trooped to the secretariat of the Imo State Security Network on Owerri-Aba road and also set it on fire.

He said a detachment of policemen had been drafted to the two areas to prevent hoodlums and miscreants from capitalising on the development.

No life was, however, lost in the incident.
