Akwa Ibom Unemployed Teachers Take Matter To God, Says Please Touch Our Governor (Photo)

After waiting for about two years at home without any job, despite having received letters of appointment from the Akwa Ibom state government, some “unemployed teachers” in the state have publicly taken the matter to God.

The teachers, over 200 of them, gathered about 7.39 am on Saturday at the popular Ibom Plaza, in
Uyo, the capital of the state, to pray for God to touch the heart of Governor Udom Emmanuel. They prayed for about two hours.

“We want God to touch his heart for his government to post us to schools for us to start work,” one of the teachers who was involved in the prayer meeting told Premium Times.

 “We are from this state, and we have the right to benefit from the resources of this state.”

Nigeria Loses 2000 Children, 158 Women EVERYDAY

Everyday, Nigeria loses 2000 children and 158 women due to poor access to basic healthcare, an international organisation, One Campaign, said.

The organisation also said 750,000 children die every year in Nigeria before they were five years old because of pneumonia, cholera, malaria and other preventable disease.

The Nigeria Country Representative of One Campaign, Edwin Ikhuoria, said the National Health Act could “save the lives of over 3 million mothers, newborns and children under-five years by 2022 if fully implemented by allocating 15 per cent of the nation’s budget to the health sector.”

Sweden's Youngest Ever Minister Resigns

Aida Hadzialic, 29, expressed remorse for her actions after being caught drink driving as she announced her intention to step down from her post as Sweden's Minister for Secondary Schools. At a press conference on Saturday, she said she would formally resign on Monday.

Hadzialic was stopped at random by police on Thursday evening and was found to have a blood alcohol content of 0.2 grams per litre. At Saturday's press conference, Hadzialic explained that she had been at a concert in Copenhagen and had two glasses of wine before setting off to drive to Malmö four hours later. Apparently she believed the alcohol would have left her system in that time.

She is quoted by Swedish tabloid, Aftonbladet, as saying: "After the concert, I chose to take the car home to Malmö, of course, in the belief that I was not affected. There and then I committed my life's biggest mistake. I choose to do this [quit] because I believe what I have done is that serious."

Usain Bolt has qualified for the men's 100m semi-finals with a comfortable win in the heats.

The Jamaican strolled home in a time of 10:07 ahead of tomorrow's semi-finals and final as he bids for a triple-triple gold.

Bolt's start was not to his liking but he pushed on to pip Bahrain's Andrew Fisher in the final 10m to win the heat.

Bolt's rival Justin Gatlin also won his heat with a gentle run that came through in 10:01.

Breaking! Armed Man Stabs 6, Sets Train On Fire In Switzerland

A man has set a train carriage in Switzerland on fire using a flammable liquid and stabbed passengers, injuring six people, including a six-year-old child.

The man, a 27-year-old Swiss citizen, carried out the attack on a train travelling in Switzerland's far East, along its border with Liechtenstein, and was also injured.

Police said the attack had taken place this afternoon near the Salez station on a train running between Buchs and Sennwald and that some of the injuries were serious.

"According to the information we have for the time being, the 27-year-old Swiss man poured out a flammable liquid ... (which) caught fire," police said, adding that the man "was also armed with at least one knife".

Seven people including the suspected attacker were admitted to various hospitals with burn and stab wounds, the statement said.

Woman Gives Birth To Conjoined Twins At Syria War Zone

A mother has given birth to conjoined twins in a part of Syria that has seen some of the war’s heaviest fighting.

Nawras and Moaz, who are joined at the chest with protruding intestines, were born in the city of Douma in July. They have now been safely transferred by ambulance to a children’s hospital in nearby Damascus. The twins travelled with their mother and aunt and are said to be in good health.

Syrian doctors had appealed for help from the World Health Organization, saying the twins would die if they were unable to undergo surgery.

Dream Team Players Finally Receive Outstanding Allowances

Members of the U-23 team have been paid their camp allowances for 22 days, while injured striker Junior Ajayi has been cleared to feature in Saturday’s Olympics quarter final clash against Denmark.

No fewer than seven persons were killed yesterday evening in Akokwa community in Ideato North council of Imo State, following a bloody clash between the Hausa/Fulani community and the indigenes.

Why Kogi Lawmaker Was Banned From Travelling By SSS

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, says a member of the House of Representatives who was barred from traveling out of the country on Thursday is wanted for his alleged links to the arms procurement scandal.

Sunday Karim, a Peoples Democratic Party member representing Kogi State, was stopped by the State Security Service at the Abuja International Airport as he prepared to board a flight to the United States of America.

Wilson Uwujaren, spokesman for the EFCC, told Premium Times that state agents decided to move against Mr. Karim at the airport because the lawmaker had been elusive for weeks.

“We’ve been looking for him since then but we couldn’t find him,” Mr. Uwujaren said. “So we had to put his name on the watch list.”

Budget Padding: Restrain The Police From Arresting Me, Jibrin Runs To Court

The embattled Chairman of the Committee on Appropriation, Jibrin Abdulmumin, who made the budget-padding allegation, has approached a Federal High Court in Abuja seeking an order to restrain the Nigerian Police from arresting him.

The respondents in the suit are the Nigeria Police, the Inspector-General of Police, the Commissioner of Police (FCT), Hon. Yakubu Dogara, Hon. Yusuf Lasun, Hon. Alhassan Ado Doguwa, Hon. Leo Ogor and the Attorney General of the Federation, Abubakar Malami.

The lawmaker, in his tweets and statements had given the impression that he was enjoying the cooperation of the police, over the allegations against Dogara and others.

But Abdulmumin, in the suit filed before the Federal High Court in Abuja with No: FHC/ABJ/CS/595, said there was a police siege on his home and that up till the time of filing the suit on August 9, 2016, the siege was still in force.

A 16-year-old girl used her last words after being stabbed in her Los Angeles-area home to scream the name of the ex-boyfriend she broke up with two weeks ago, helping to make him a suspect in her death.

The girl's screams woke her mother up and roused neighbors from sleep just after 3 am in the quiet neighborhood in Pico Rivera, about 10 miles southeast of downtown Los Angeles.

Six People Die In Private Aircraft At US Airport

Six people have died in a plane crash when a pilot was attempting to land a small private aircraft.

The crash happened at Shannon Airport in Fredericksburg, Virginia yesterday. Despite an attempt to land, the aircraft was pulled back up into the air towards the end of the runway.

"It's a small private aircraft that had come in for a landing. It got to the end of the runway. It pulled up, banked to the left and crashed in the trees and caught fire," said Corinne Geller, public relations manager for the state police.

The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency in Kwara on Friday said it arrested Mohammed Adamu for possessing N9.8 million fake currency notes.

The NDLEA Commander in the state, Mr Apeh Reuben, who presented the suspect to newsmen in Ilorin said the fake currency were mainly N1,000 notes.

Reuben said Adamu concealed the fake notes in a carton of noodles wrapped with cello tape.

He said that the suspect was arrested by NDLEA Jebba Command while on transit to Kano on Aug. 9, 2016. The commander said that Adamu conspired with a yet-to-be-identified individual in Ilorin to carry out the act.

Pope Francis has surprised 20 former prostitutes by popping in for a visit at their safe house in Rome.
The women had been rescued from their pimps and are being given shelter and protection at an apartment run by a Catholic charity in Italy's capital.

The pontiff chatted with the women, some trafficked from Africa including Nigeria and elsewhere in Europe, for more than an hour.

The 79-year-old cleric has repeatedly described human trafficking as a "crime against humanity".

The police in Bayelsa State have arrested one Timidou Jephther ‘m’ 20 years, for sexually assaulting to death a 5 year girl, identified as Queen Kaiser.

The incident occurred at Akedei community, a riverine suburb of Sagbama in Sagbama Local government area of the state last weekend.

The suspect was reportedly apprehended and and beaten to stupor by angry community ‎folks after the discovery of the remains of the kid behind his house.

Historic Moment Sprinter Becomes First Saudi Woman To Compete In 100m

Sprinter Kariman Abuljadayel became the first Saudi woman to compete in the 100m, finishing seventh in a preliminary heat.

Standing out from her competitors in a full-body kit and hijab, she was unable to qualify for the final of the event, but was praised heavily online for her efforts.

Abuljadayel, 22, follows in the footsteps of Sarah Attar, the first female track athlete to compete for Saudi Arabia in the Olympics in 2012, and the first to compete in a hijab.

She completed the race in 14.61 seconds, lagging far behind the current world record of 10.49 seconds set by American Florence Griffith-Joyner in 1988.

Black Woman Who Planned To Join ISIS With Fiancé Is Sentenced To 12 Years In Prison

A Mississippi college student who tried to disguise a trip to Syria to join ISIS as her honeymoon has been sentenced to 12 years in prison on terror charges.

Vicksburg native Jaelyn Young, 20, sobbed in court during her sentencing by U.S. District Judge Sharion Aycock on Thursday.

She pleaded guilty in March to one count of conspiring to provide material support to a terrorist organization. Young had faced up to 20 years in prison.

Her parents pleaded for leniency at Thursday's hearing. An emotional Young said she was ashamed of her actions.

Maxwell Ezenwa, Christy Tifase and Shalewa Olayinka have been charged by the Harris County Sheriff's Office investigators and U.S. postal inspectors in a complicated and extensive credit card app fraud.

Starting in early 2014, investigators began a joint investigation of a group suspected of being involved in "fraud app" credit cards where credit cards were applied for without the victims' consent, mailed to the victims, and stolen out of their mail boxes.

Two businesses were used to process the credit cards for large unusual amounts, and then able to generate cash from the fraud apps. Those businesses were identified as Lace Warehouse and African Fashions owned by Maxwell Ezenwa and Lagos Island Café, owned by Christy Tifase.

Lionel Messi Comes Out Of Retirement, Will Play For Argentina Again

Lionel Messi has come out of international retirement and will play for Argentina again. The FC Barcelona forward, 29, announced his international retirement in June after Argentina's penalty shootout loss to Chile in the Copa America final.

However, Spanish newspaper Mundo Deportivo reports that the five-time Ballon d'Or winner has made a U-turn.

Messi is said to have agreed to return to national team duty after meeting new Argentina manager Edgardo Bauza in Barcelona last weekend.

The newspaper also reports that Messi has stated his intention to play in his country's World Cup qualifiers against Uruguay and Venezuela later this year.

Nnamdi Kanu Finally Agrees To Negotiate With FG

Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the separatist group, Indigenous People of Biafra, has expressed the willingness of his group to negotiate with the Federal Government to end the agitation for self-governance.

Mr. Kanu and two others, Benjamin Madubugwu and David Nwawuisi, are facing trial for alleged treason. and have been in detention since October 2015.

Reacting to the government’s decision on Thursday to release some members of the group who were arrested in February, Mr. Kanu’s lawyers, led by Ifeanyi Ejiofor and the Amoebi Nzelu, said they were not opposed to talks with the government.
