British Woman Who Took Tramadol (Pain Killers) To Egypt Is Jailed For Three Years

A British tourist accused of smuggling 300 painkiller drugs into Egypt in her suitcase has been sentenced to three years in jail.

Laura Plummer, 33, who was arrested with the medication in October has been kept inside a hellhole jail cell with 25 other prisoners ever since.

Her trial was expected to begin yesterday and she wept as she appeared before a judge in handcuffs on Christmas morning. But she was suddenly handed a three-year sentence for the charge of drug smuggling.

Ms Plummer has always maintained the Tramadol tablets were for her partner, Omar Caboo, who suffers from severe back pain.

Only yesterday, her lawyer spoke of his hope that she could be cleared of the charges.

Mohamed Othman said: "For someone to be found guilty of drug smuggling they have to be aware that they are possessing narcotics.

"Laura did not know that what she was carrying was a narcotic.

"This is pursuant to that Tramadol 50mg is a painkiller in her country, England. When she brought the Tramadol she believed it was a painkiller."

He continued: "It is illogical that she was dealing in Tramadol.

Ms Plummer's family have also said she had no idea what she was doing was illegal and was just "daft".
