Gaddafi's Son Freed From Prison

Saif al-Islam Gaddafi, the son of slain Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi, has been released from prison, according to fighters who control the facility.

A statement from the Abu Bakr al-Siddiq Battalion, a militia which controls Zintan, a mountainous region southwest of the capital Tripoli, said Saif al-Islam was released late on Saturday.

The most prominent of Gaddafi's sons, Saif al-Islam, 44, was captured in Zintan in November 2011 as he was fleeing to neighbouring Niger after opposition fighters seized Tripoli.

Saif al-Islam, the most prominent of Gaddafi’s eight children, was sentenced to death in July 2015 by a court in Tripoli in a mass trial of former Gaddafi government officials.

2 Church Goers Gang-Rape Teenage Girl

Two friends  Samuel Oriko and Joseph Bassey  who allegedly lured a teenage girl to the back of a church during fellowship and gang-raped her, were hauled up before an Ikeja Chief Magistrates’ Court.

The accused Oriko, 25, and Bassey, 30 both unemployed, reside in Ogba in Ikeja area of Lagos.

The duo is being tried for conspiracy and gang rape. The accused, according to the Prosecutor, Sgt. Raphael Donny, committed the offences on May 23 at the back of Cherubim and Seraphim Church, Ogba.

Donny said the accused lured the girl to the back of the church while prayer was going on and raped her. He said the two accused and the 13-year-old girl are members of the congregation.

TV Batman Actor Adam West Dies At 88

Adam West, the US actor best known as the star of the 1960s hit TV series Batman, has died aged 88.

West died peacefully in Los Angeles after a brief battle with leukaemia, a family spokesperson said.

His tongue-in-cheek portrayal of Batman and the superhero's alter ego Bruce Wayne won a cult following.

However, West later struggled to find acting work. He most recently played a character in the animated comedy Family Guy.

Man Gets Death Sentence In Facebook Blasphemy

A man has been sentenced to death for committing blasphemy on Facebook, lawyers said today, the first conviction on charges arising from social media.

Judge Shabbir Ahmad Awan handed down the verdict in Bahawalpur, around 600 kilometres (372 miles) south of capital Islamabad, finding Taimoor Raza guilty , prosecutor Shafiq Qureshi told AFP.

Raza had a Facebook argument about Islam with someone who turned out to be a counter-terrorism department official, defence lawyer Rana Fida Hussain said. The official brought charges against Raza based on the comments made on the social networking site.

Hussain said his client was innocent and that he would appeal the conviction. Millions of Pakistanis have been receiving text messages from the government warning them against sharing "blasphemous" content online.

Tee Y Mix in an interview with Saturday Punch has revealed why he is not married and why he won’t be pressurized into marriage. While speaking on why he is yet to tie the knot, the singer said;

Wanted Kidnapper, Evans Arrested In Lagos

The notorious and dreaded kidnap kingpin who was recently declared wanted by the police simply called Evans has been arrested in Lagos.

He was arrested at the Murtala Mohammed International Airport a few hours ago by eagle-eyed policemen while he was on his way to travel out of the country.

 Recall that police authorities, recently, placed N30M bounty on his head after the arrest of some of his gang members. The gang had kidnapped uncountable number of wealthy business men in Lagos and environs. His victims were forced to pay a ransom of not less than N500m before they were let off the hook.

Eight Migrants Die As Boat Sinks Off Libya

At least eight migrants drowned when their Europe-bound boat sank off Libya's coast and at least 100 people are missing, a coastguard official said on Saturday.

The eight bodies were on an inflatable craft that can carry up to 120 passengers, said Colonel Fathi al-Rayani, head of the coastguard in Garabulli, 60 kilometres (40 miles) east of Tripoli.

He estimated that "at least 100" migrants were missing. The boat was spotted deflated off Garabulli, and the coastguard found the bodies inside, said an AFP reporter who accompanied them. Conflict-ravaged Libya has long been a stepping stone for migrants seeking a better life in Europe.

The UN refugee agency has said around 61,250 migrants have reached Italy since the start of the year after crossing the Mediterranean, while 1,778 more are dead or missing.

Man Wanted For Chopping Off Daughter’s Finger Over Haircut

Police in Ogun State say they are looking for a man who chopped off his 14-year-old daughter’s finger because she failed to cut her hair after he gave her N100 to do so.

A nongovernmental group which reported the case to police said the unnamed child was preparing for her junior secondary school certificate examination when she was attacked by her father, Musa Olayinka.

The incident, which occurred in Ijebu-Ode town, got the attention of the nongovernmental group, Child Protection Network. The group’s chairman, Kunle Sanni, told Premium Times the organisation was working with the police to arrest and prosecute the feeing father.

NDLEA Insists On Presence At Ports Despite Nigerian Govt’s Directive

The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NAFDAC) has claimed its operations at the ports had been endorsed by the federal government, despite evidence to the contrary.

In a statement issued by the agency, the NDLEA said the anti-narcotics agency was among the “eight agencies” approved to operate within the ports by acting president, Yemi Osinbajo.

According to the statement, issued by Mitchell Ofoyeju, NDLEA’s spokesperson, and circulated to media houses, the agency said it received the presidential mandate to work at the ports.

“NDLEA has been cleared by the presidency to work at the seaports,” Muhammad Abdallah, a retired colonel and the chief executive of the NDLEA.

Air Peace Flights Disrupted Over Alleged Debt

Nigerian air carrier, Air Peace, yesterday  threatened to go to court and demand compensation over what it described as loss incurred for the disruption of its operations at the Enugu Airport.

Premium Times gathered that the disruption followed disagreements over a N7 million debt the airline allegedly owes the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN).

But the chairman of the airline, Allen Onyema, said the airline had paid its debt, and threatened to sue the federal government, calling the disruption a sabotage.

Mr. Onyeama blamed the manager of the airport, Mgbemena Orjiakor, for the disruption. He said if the airline was not adequately compensated for its losses, it will go to court. “I got a call this that the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria, (FAAN) stopped our operations in Enugu over N7 million naira debt, which we have already paid.

Northern Threat: Return Our Oil Blocs, N’Delta Militants Tell FG

The coalition of Niger Delta militants on Friday called on the Federal Government to return all oil blocs being controlled by northerners to the people of the region.

The agitators explained that their action was based on the ultimatum given by some northern youth groups to the Igbo to vacate the North within three months.

Leaders of the eight militants groups said in a statement that the Niger Delta region shall declare its independence on October 1, 2017 and free itself from enslavement by the North.

The coalition comprises Niger Delta Watchdogs, Niger Delta Volunteers, Niger Delta Peoples Fighters, Niger Delta Warriors, Bakassi Freedom Fighters, Niger Delta Movement for Justice, Niger Delta Fighters Network and Niger Delta Freedom Mandate.

Siblings Drag Bishop To Court Over Father’s Will

The head of the late Chief A.O. Ezeoke’s family, Dr Sylvester Ezeoke, has dragged the Bishop of Awka Diocese in Anambra State, Most Rev. Paulinus Ezeokafor, to court over his father’s will.

He alleged that the bishop, as a principal executor of his father’s will, was playing a game suggestive that he did not want to divest his father’s property to the beneficiaries.

Ezeoke explained that also sued at the Anambra State High Court was the counsel for the bishop, Rev. Fr. Chukwujekwu Obiaora.

He said another arm of the matter was pending at the Federal High Court, sitting in Awka, even as he expressed dismay how certain people were bent on denying the family their inheritance.

Fayose Is After My Life, Federal Varisty VC Cries Out

The Vice Chancellor of Federal University, Oye-Ekiti (FUOYE), Prof. Kayode Soremekun, has accused Governor Ayo Fayose of posing threat to his life by giving support to union leaders to destabilize the institution.

The university boss claimed that Fayose sent the Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Dr. Modupe Alade, to the state police headquarters where he union leaders were detained to facilitate their release.

The detained union chairmen allegedly released on Fayose’s order are Ekundayo Ajibaye of the National Association of Academic Technologists (NAAT), Mutiu Ademola of the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) and Adebayo Dada of the Non-Academic Staff Union (NASU).

Addressing a press conference in Ado-Ekiti yesterday, Soremekun accused Fayose of exerting pressure on him while serving as the Chief Returning Officer for the Edo State governorship election by sending one of his (Fayose’s) aides to him (Soremekun).

Dino Melaye Insists On Magu’s Removal As EFCC chairman

At the valedictory session marking the second anniversary of the 8th Senate yesterday, the controversy over President Muhammadu Buhari’s failure to remove Mr. Ibrahim Magu as Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission was reopened.

Senator Dino Melaye, in his remarks at the session, accused President Buhari of selectively applying the law by retaining Magu as Acting Chairman of the EFCC.

I Planned To Use Human Parts For Money Ritual After Ramadan- Alfa With Female Head

An Alfa, Rasheed Ajibade, who was caught with a fresh female head in Osun State recently, has explained that he planned to use the head and other body parts of the victims for money ritual after the ongoing Ramadan ends.

Ajibade, 38, an indigene of Ikirun in Ifelodun Local Government Area of Osun State was caught with a fresh human head and other body parts like hands, lungs, liver and blood, which was kept inside a bottle, was arrested by the police in Osogbo on Wednesday during a stop and search operation.

The Alfa said he was also a herbalist. He was arrested in an SUV, which he said belonged to his elder brother. The gory human parts were found inside a small sack he kept in the vehicle.

EFCC Seizes Patience Jonathan’s N2bn Hotel

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission has seized a hotel allegedly belonging to Mrs. Patience Jonathan, the wife of former President Goodluck Jonathan. The anti-graft agency also seized three other properties in Abuja allegedly belonging to Patience.

The five-storey hotel is located near Setraco Construction Company, beside Mabushi Kado Expressway.

Although the hotel has not been officially valued by the EFCC, some estate agents within the community told our correspondent that the property should be worth about N2bn.

The property, which has not been officially opened, has between 50 to 100 rooms, a gymnasium, a fountain and other amenities. Punch correspondent, who visited the property on Friday, observed the red inscription, ‘EFCC Under Investigation’ all over the hotel.

Revealed! Brave Policeman In Robbery Video Died In April

A policeman, who has been described by many Nigerians as a hero after a viral video showed him gunning down one of the four armed robbers who attacked a bank in Imo State in February 2017, died two months after the incident, Saturday Punch has learnt.

He is Sergeant Chukwudi Iboko. The three-minute video, apparently a CCTV footage from the bank, has been circulated on news sites and blogs in the last few days, quickly becoming one of the most talked about events of the past week in Nigeria.

It shows a car entering the bank premises, only to be followed by a black Hyundai Elantra, some seconds later. Four men emerged from the vehicle, with three holding weapons, which looked like AK47 rifles.

Police Arrest 5 Suspected Armed Robbers, Carjackers In Kano

The Kano State Police Command said on Friday that it had arrested five suspected armed robbers and car snatchers in the state.

The Public Relations Officer of the Command, DSP Magaji Majiya, disclosed this while briefing newsmen in Kano. He said the suspects were apprehended within the last one week, following a special operation during which a clampdown on car thieves and snatchers was launched.

“The command’s operatives busted a syndicate at Kuntau Village, Dorayi Babba behind forestry, where two motor vehicles were instantly recovered from them.

“Another syndicate of car thieves was smashed at Gwagwarwa Qtrs, Nassarawa Local Government Area (LGA), in which a Golf Wagon motor vehicle was recovered.

Edo Polls: PDP, Ize-Iyamu Head For Supreme Court

The People’s Democratic Party in Edo State and its governorship candidate, Pastor Osagie Ize-Iyamu have expressed their desire to head for the Supreme Court against the Court of Appeal ruling.

Pastor Ize-Iyamu told newsmen after the Court of Appeal ruling that certain issues raised at the tribunal were yet to be addressed.

He said, “Until one is actually able to lay hands on the judgement and read,that is when one can make a fair comment. All we know is that our appeal and the cross appeal were dismissed. But the reasons are not known.

“By the time we lay hands on it, we will meet with our lawyers and our party leaders and take a decision. There were fundamental issues we raised against the tribunal judgement.

Man Arraigned For Allegedly Slapping Policewoman

Fashion designer, 39-year-old Bale Kareem, who allegedly assaulted a policewoman, was on Friday released on bail in the sum of N10, 000 on the orders of an Ogudu Magistrates’ Court in Lagos.

 The Magistrate, Mrs O. Sule-Amzat, who gave the ruling, also granted the accused one surety in like sum, whose address must be verified.

 The accused, who resides at Ore-Ofe St, Agility II in Mile 12 area of Lagos, is facing a charge of assault to which he pleaded not guilty.

 The prosecutor, Sgt. Ihiehie Lucky told the court that the accused committed the offence on June 6 at Mile 12 Police Post. Lucky said the complainant, Insp. James Ebun, attached to the Mile 12 Police Post, reported the incident at the Charge Room of the station.

Court martial in Borno State has sentenced a soldier to death for the murder of a suspected Boko Haram terrorist.

The Army General Court Martial found Lance Corporal Hillary Joel guilty of killing the suspected terrorist during a cordon and search operation in Damboa Local Government Area of Borno State. He reportedly set the suspect ablaze, leading his death.







Married Woman Dies In Hotel Room With Lover

A married woman has died in a hotel room in Enugu while “enjoying” with her lover during a one-night stand.

A statement by police spokesman Ebere Amaraizu, a Superintendent of Police (SP), said the deceased was identified as Mrs Ifeyinwa Udeh of Ugboezeji in Abakpa Nike of Enugu State.

The statement said: “On that fateful day, the deceased with her lover, identified as Joel Ugwu of Abakpa in Enugu State, had allegedly checked into one hotel located around Nowas Junction of Transekulu in Enugu.

“She was later confirmed dead by a doctor at St Leo’s Hospital Transekulu after suddenly falling ill and becoming unconscious. “She was taken to the hospital for medical attention at 11.15 p.m by her lover.”

Football Player Jailed For Raping And Assaulting Wife

A Ghanaian football player in Gävle, Sweden, has been sentenced to two years in prison for raping and assaulting his wife.

 A Swedish court today sentenced a Ghanaian football player in Sweden's second division to two years in prison for raping and beating his then wife.

 After serving his sentence, 22-year-old Kwame Bonsu, who played for the Gefle IF club, will be expelled from the Scandinavian country where he has lived since 2013, Gävle District Court said.

 Gefle on Friday said Bonsu was dismissed from the team with immediate effect. According to court documents seen by The Local he will also have to pay 122,600 kronor ($14,000) in compensation to his wife, who is a Swedish national. He first met her in 2014 when he was playing in the southern Swedish city of Mjölby.

Man In Court For Defiling Seven-Year-Old Girl

41- year-old man, Aminu Umar, who allegedly defiled his neighbour’s daughter, on Friday appeared before an Ikeja Chief Magistrates’ Court.

The accused, a trader, who resides at Salako St., Agege, a suburb of Lagos, is facing a one-count charge of defilement.

The prosecutor, Sgt. Raphael Donny told the court that the offence was committed on May 30 at the accused residence.

Donny said that the accused called the seven-year-old girl into his room on the pretext of sending her on an errand. “The accused shut the door after her and defiled her,’’ he said.

Emir Of Katsina ‘Ready To Sacrifice Last Blood’ To Protect Igbos, Others

The Emir of Katsina, Abdulmumini Kabir, has said that Nigeria will continue to remain one in spite of its multi-ethnic diversity.

Mr. Kabir made the assertion on Friday at his palace in Katsina, when he addressed leaders of Igbo community and other Nigerians residing in Katsina State.

“I am responding to the quit notice given to some Nigerians residing in the North by some group of people who are enemies of peace.

Rhino Kills Hungarian Conservationist In Rwanda

A conservationist who played a key role in reintroducing the eastern black rhino to Rwanda has been killed by one of the animals, a wildlife group says.

Krisztián Gyöngyi was tracking animals in the Akagera National Park when he was killed, African Parks added.

It did not give more details, but rhinos usually charge and kill people with their horn.

Eastern black rhinos became extinct in Rwanda about a decade ago, and were reintroduced in May.
African Parks brought 20 rhinos from South Africa to the Akagera National Park.

It's Over Now! Appeal Court Reaffirms Obaseki As Edo Governor

The Court of Appeal, sitting in Benin, Friday reaffirmed Mr. Godwin Obaseki as the validly elected Governor of Edo State in the September 28 gubernatorial election in the state.

The Appellate Court in its judgment read by Justice Dogban Mensen, said the Justice Ahmed Badamasi-led Tribunal did a painstaking job in its judgment, and so deserved commendation.

Breaking! Igbo Quit Notice: Northern Elders Forum Backs Arewa Youth Group

The Northern Elders’ Forum (NEF), on Friday expressed support to the call by the Coalition of Northern Youth Groups for Igbos to leave the region within three months.

The group made its position known despite widespread condemnation that followed the ultimatum earlier handed by the Arewa Youth Consultative Forum.

The forum expressed “disappointment” with the Northern Governors’ Forum for disowning the youth groups.

Ango Abdullahi, the NEF spokesperson, told journalists in Zaria on Friday that it was hypocritical for the Igbos to continue to live in other parts of the country while agitating for Nigeria’s break up.

Acting Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Mr. Ibrahim Magu, has been named the Vice-Chairman of the Heads of Anti-Corruption Agencies in Commonwealth Africa.

The EFCC said this in a statement by its spokesman, Mr. Wilson Uwujaren, yesterday.

The announcement was made after the association rounded off its Seventh regional conference at the Lakeshore Resort, Mangochi, Malawi, organised by the Commonwealth Secretariat and hosted by the Anti- Corruption Bureau of Malawi. We say big congrats to him!
