Grieving Daughter To Eat Late Mom For Christmas

Grieving Debra Parsons will have her mum Doreen for Christmas dinner this year – by scattering her ashes on the turkey then tucking in.

And for dessert she’ll enjoy Christmas Pud...with a dusting of her mum’s last remains too.

Debra, 41, has felt the urge to EAT Doreen’s ashes since she died in May and has had a small
spoonful most days to feel “as close as possible” to her.

But as she faces Christmas without her, the craving has become even stronger.

“It is the only thing that will get me through my first Christmas without mum,” said Debra.

Law To Ban Petrol Vehicles Coming In 3 Years – Sen. Tinubu

Senate Committee Chairman on Environment, Sen. Oluremi Tinubu has said the committee in three years will sponsor a bill banning vehicles that run on Premium Motor Spirit (PMS).

Tinubu said it is the responsibility of the Senate to promote legislative superstructure that will help the nation achieve Green economy.

PENGASSAN Begins Strike Monday As Peace Parley Ends In Stalemate

The Petroleum  and Natural Gas Senior Staff Association of Nigeria (PENGASSAN) is set to embark on indefinite strike beginning from Monday, following a stalemate in the peace meeting the Minister of Petroleum Resources, Dr Emmanuel Kachikwu, brokered between the union and Neconde Energy Limited.

PENGASSAN and Neconde have been embroiled in crisis over allegation of anti-worker practices.

PENGASSAN, the umbrella body of senior workers in the oil and gas sector, alleged that the management of Neconde wrongly terminated the employment of some of its workers, threatening to go on strike if the sacked workers were not recalled within 72 hours.

Don’t Free Me, Prison Inmate Begs Court

There was a mild drama at Ekwulobia prisons in Anambra State on Friday when an inmate, Tobias Mbaekwe, who was granted amnesty by Chief Judge of Anambra State, Justice Peter Umeadi, on health grounds, declined the pardon.

Mbaekwe, from Ozubulu in Ekwusigo Local Government Area of the state, was among 13 others freed in the exercise.

The defendant fell on the floor shortly after the ruling that he should be freed on bail, begging the Chief Judge to allow him stay back in the prison, where he said his life was better secured.

Thugs Attack, Injure Ondo Monarch With Machetes

The monarch of Igbokoda, in Ilaje Local Government Area of Ondo State, Oba Afolabi Odidiomo,narrowly escaped death on Wednesday, as thugs from the communities attacked him with machetes.

Punch correspondent learnt that the traditional ruler sustained several machete cuts on his head. He was said to have been left in a pool of blood by his assailants.

He was reportedly holding a meeting with some high chiefs in the town when the armed men allegedly stormed the meeting and started shooting sporadically in the air to disperse everybody at the meeting. Once people fled, they pounced on the king, dealing him several machete cuts in the head.

A source who was in the town when the incident took place told our correspondent that the monarch’s driver,his aides and some other people who attended the meeting were injured as they fled. The monarch’s vehicle was also destroyed by the hoodlums.

Why Ex-Senate President Was Arrested, Quizzed

There were revelations yesterday on why former Senate President, Senator David Mark, was arrested and quizzed by the Economic and Financial Crimes commission (EFCC).

A source in Mark’s camp told The Nation that the EFCC wanted the former Senate President to account for the campaign cash sent to Benue State by the campaign team of former President Goodluck Jonathan in the build-up to the 2015 presidential election.

But the source said that EFCC was merely chasing shadows because Mark was never a part of ex-President Jonathan’s campaign team.

60 Million Nigerians Illiterate –Literacy Commission

The Executive Secretary, National Commission for Mass Literacy, Adult and Non-formal Education, Alhaji Abba Haladu, says about 60 million Nigerians are illiterate.

He said this at the 2017 International Literacy Day Celebration held at Yewa College, Ilaro, Yewa South Local Government Area of Ogun State.

He said the situation called for an urgent attention as the country strives to ensure the attainment of the Sustainable Development Goals by 2030.

Haladu said out of the figure, the female population accounted for nearly 60 per cent, while about 1.3 million children were out of school.

Woman Mobbed For Stealing

A 35-year-old woman was on Thursday mobbed for allegedly stealing an undisclosed amount of money from a co-passenger in a tricycle in Umuahia, the Abia State capital.

The incident, which occurred on Enugu/Abiriba Road in the state capital, attracted the attention of other road users, who gave the suspect the beating of her life, before she was rescued.

She was immediately arrested by police operatives from the Central Police Station, Umuahia. An eyewitness, who identified himself only as Chuks, told Southern City News that luck ran out on the suspect when her victim alighted from the tricycle and couldn’t find his money to pay his fare.

Nigeria Ranks Second Largest HIV Epidemic Nation

Nigeria had the second largest HIV epidemic in 2016, with over 196,000 adolescents representing 10 per cent of the global burden said to be living with HIV/AIDS, according to a World Health Report.

The report was given by Mrs Esther Samuel, The Chief Matron, Lagos State Ministry of Health, at a programme by a Non-governmental Organisation (NGO) Lisa Demi Project, in Lagos.

Burna Boy Arrested Over Mr 2Kay Robbery Attack, To Be Charged To Court Monday

Burna Boy, has finally turned himself in after being declared wanted by the Lagos State police command for two months. He reported to the command headquarters in Ikeja at about 5 p.m. today to state his side of the story as well as address the allegations of his involvement in a robbery attack on Mr 2kay.

He was subsequently arrested, interrogated and detained and is expected to be charged to court on Monday alongside members of the gang earlier arrested.

Speaking shortly after the interrogation, the Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Imohimi Edgal, said the state police command has zero tolerance for all forms of crime and would not hesitate to prosecute anyone found culpable in any criminal offence perpetrated in the state.

Soldier Sentenced To Death For Killing Five

The General Court Martial (GOC) sitting in Maiduguri, Borno State has sentenced a soldier serving in Operation Lafiya Dole to death for murder.

Deputy Director 7 Division Army Public Relations, Colonel Kingsley Samuel in a statement on Friday said the soldier, Lance Corporal John Godwin, was charged with murder for killing five rescued civilians in Yamteke town of Borno State.

The civilians were earlier rescued by troops of the soldier’s battalion and were taken for investigation at the time the soldier shot and killed five of them.

Rwanda Bans Water-Pipe Tobacco Smoking

Rwanda has announced ban on importation and smoking of water-pipe tobacco popularly known as “shisha’’ on Friday.

The use, advertisement and import of water-pipe tobacco are banned on Rwandan territory with effect from Dec. 15, 2017, a statement issued by Ministry of Health said.

The ban is in line with World Health Organisation tobacco guidelines underlining smoking health effects such as being damaging, addictive and dangerous on human lives, the statement said.

It said that failure to comply with the directive would attract sanctions as provided by the country’s laws.

Man Acquitted, Discharged Of Armed Robbery Charges After Four Years In Lagos Jail

An Ikeja High Court on Friday discharged and acquitted Ifeanyi Igwe, a fashion designer, of the charge of conspiracy and attempted robbery four years after his first arraignment.

Igwe’s freedom came on Friday after being incarcerated for four years. Justice Raliatu Adebiyi on Friday found Igwe, in his late 20s, not guilty of a two-count of conspiracy and armed robbery.

The judge said Igwe’s acquittal followed the prosecution’s inability to prove its case against Igwe.

Adebiyi held that “the evidence of the sole witness in the case, Sgt. Augustine Okodo, the Investigating Police Officer gave no evidence of the fact that nothing was stolen, there was also no evidence from the alleged victim.

DPR Sanctions 10 Filling Stations Over Price Hike

The Department of Petroleum Resources on Friday said it had sanctioned 10 petrol filling stations in Zamfara for selling fuel above official pump price.

The Acting Controller of the department in Gusau, Saleh Audu, told newsmen in Gusau.

Audu said DPR had visited 35 filling stations across the state in the past one week and discovered that 10 out of the stations were selling fuel above N145 per litre.

He said three other stations were penalised for violating rules and regulations of the department. He advised motorists to support the department to enable it to carry out its duty effectively.



Nigerian Sentenced To 18 Years In Vietnamese Prison

A Southern Vietnam court has sentenced a Nigerian to 18 years in prison over a fake customs enforcement scam.

A local media reported that Michael Ikechukwu Leonard, 45, was convicted on Thursday of “deceiving others to steal their assets” in a scam which targeted wealthy Vietnamese women.

The court in Can Tho city determined that Leonard gained his victims’ trust on messaging apps using various alter egos, including a U.S. army officer.

The convict was said to have promised  to send  his victims  valuable presents,  including laptops and jewellery from the U.S.

Germany To Deport 1,500 Gambians

German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier has confirmed a total of 1,500 Gambians who landed in Germany without documentation will be deported, a joint news conference in Banjul stated on Friday.

Steinmeier said this during his official visit to the West African country that emerged from a tense political standoff early this year.

“There are over 35,000 Gambian migrants in Germany, out of whom 1,500 are undocumented and awaiting deportation,’’ Steinmeier said at a joint press conference with Gambian President Adama Barrow in Banjul.

Steinmeier said the two countries will bring technical experts to work on the problem, including providing skill training to Gambians.

I Can’t Engage Wike, He’s Like ‘One Of My Sons’ - Rotimi Amaechi

The Minister for Transportation, Mr Chibuike Amaechi, has denied any rift between him and Rivers State Governor Nyesom Wike, describing the governor as one of his ‘sons’.

Amaechi, who was also governor of Rivers State from 2007 to 2015, said this during his appearance on Channels Television’s Question Time.

“He (Wike) was my staff; he is like one of my sons,” Amaechi said during the programme which aired on Thursday. “Why should I engage him? He was local government chairman when I was the Speaker (of the State House of Assembly),” he said.

The minister, however, accused the governor of failing to sustain the efforts he had made in developing Rivers State.

Student Banned From Lead Role In School Play Commits Suicide

A promising young actor who was banned from his school play has killed himself, an inquest just heard. Mason Mercer, 16, was said to have a 'change in mood' when he was told he would not be able to perform a lead role in a Dick Whittington production at Northfleet Technology College in Kent.

Mason, who was described as "shy" and "passionate about drama" was found dead at his home in Gravesend by his mum and two brothers on September 20 - hours after a meeting with teachers about his punishment.

PC Sinitta Dale told the hearing at Archbishops Palace in Maidstone how Mason had the lead role in the play alongside his girlfriend, but this was revoked from him following an incident on a school trip to Folkestone the day before his death.

Researchers at the University of California Los Angeles found tea-drinkers were 74% less likely to suffer glaucoma.

In Britain, about 2% of the population over 40 have the condition - which leads to a million NHS visits per year.

The study asked 1,678 participants how often and how much they had drunk of caffeinated and decaffeinated drinks, including soft drinks and iced tea.

How Negligence Led To Deaths Of 20 Persons In Illegal Bayelsa Refinery Fire

Fresh facts yesterday emerged as to how at least 20 persons were burnt beyond recognition penultimate Tuesday in an inferno at an illegal crude oil refining site in Kolo Creek, Ogbia Local Government Area, Bayelsa State.

Well over a week after the incident, none of the special security outfits deployed to fight illicit oil theft and refining in the Niger Delta region has issued a statement on the incident, but it was learnt yesterday that the agencies may have been aware of the existence of the site but declined to act.

The Joint Task Force (JTF), Operation Delta Safe (OPDS) and the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) are directly in charge of monitoring and curbing illegal bunkering, pipeline vandalism and proliferation of illegal refineries in the oil-rich region.
