Kano Arrests 92 Street Beggars

The Kano State Hisbah Board on Wednesday said it arrested no fewer than 92 beggars in the Kano metropolis for allegedly contravening the law against street begging.

The Officer-in-Charge of the board’s Anti-Begging Unit, Dahiru Nuhu, said the beggars were arrested around 1am at the Civic Centre, Yankura Market, as well as Yankaba bus stop.

According to him, 89 of the arrested suspects were street urchins, aka Almajiris, aged between nine and 12, adding that most of the beggars were from Bauchi, Borno, Kaduna, Kebbi, Katsina and Niger Republic.

The Kano State Government, through the Hisbah Board, had banned street begging in the state, warning that anyone caught violating the law would be arrested. All the street beggars arrested within the period of the ban, who were not from Kano State, were sent back to their respective states of origin.
