Police Fraud Unit Arrests 20 Visa Racketeers In Lagos

The Police Special Fraud Unit (PSFU) says it has arrested over 20 suspects who specialised in counterfeiting entry visas of some foreign countries.

Spokesman for the PSFU, Audi Lawal, said in a statement on Saturday in Lagos that the visa racketeers were arrested at several embassies of the foreign countries in Lagos.

The police spokesmanspokesman said that the suspects specialised in forgery of visa processing documents such as passports, bank statements, company letterheads and immigration stamps of several overseas countries.

Lawal said that all the supects confesssed to have committed the crimes and were charged to court for prosecution to serve as deterrent to others involved in such illegal activities.

Gunmen Attack Afghan Hotel

At least four gunmen have launched an attack on Kabul’s Intercontinental Hotel. Special forces tried to repel the gunmen, interior ministry spokesman, Najib Danish, told the BBC.

An official at the Afghan spy agency said the gunmen were “shooting at guests.” The attack began at about 21:00 local time (16:30 GMT), Mr. Danish said.

There were no immediate details on the casualties.

Herdsmen Kill Monarch, 28 Others In Fresh Attacks

A monarch in Taraba State and 28 others were killed during the week in fresh attacks by Fulani herdsmen, The Nation reports.

The attacks, which took place between Tuesday and Wednesday, occurred while the dust was yet to settle on herdsmen attacks on some Benue communities early in the year, which resulted in the death of about 70 residents.

Many other people were said to have been injured in the Taraba incidents while scores of other people were displaced after their homes were torched by the invaders.

No fewer than nine people were cruelly killed in separate attacks in Gishiri, Dooshima and Danwaza villages of Taraba State while another attack by the herdsmen on Karmen village, Ibi Local Government Area, left the traditional ruler, Zaki Gabriel Ukovur, dead.

Chieftaincy: We‘ll Appeal Judgment, Ajimobi Vows

The Oyo State Government says it will appeal the judgment which declared unconstitutional and illegal the Commission of Inquiry recommending the elevation of some Ibadan high chiefs to Obas.

Reacting to the judgment of the court on Friday, Gov. Abiola Ajimobi said that the state will appeal the verdict.

The governor made the assertion at the inauguration  of a block of classrooms donated by Chief Akin Olujimi (SAN) to Community Secondary School, Ajara in Ibadan.

Night Fire Razes 3 Duplexes In Gowon Estate

Fire on Friday night gutted three duplexes on 34 Road, B Close of Gowon Estate, Federal Housing Authority (FHA), Egbeda. An eyewitness said the fire was first noticed at about 7.15pm in one of the duplexes before spreading to others.

He said that an occupant in one of duplexes, who had just returned, opened the door and met the raging fire, immediately raised an alarm which attracted neighbours and sympathisers.

According to the witness, the bewildered occupant’s action quickly attracted more sympathisers’ who ran helter-skelter in assisting to put-off the fire, but their efforts were not enough.

The arrival and efforts of a combined team of Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) and State Fire Service officials to the scene helped to quench the fire. No life was lost.

Buhari To Storm Nasarawa 6th Of February

Gov. Umaru Al-Makura of Nasarawa State says arrangements have been concluded for the visit of President Muhammadu Buhari to the state on February 6th.

Al-Makura disclosed this in Lafia while receiving reports of fact finding and investigative committee set up to look into the activities of tertiary institutions in the state from 2014 to 2017.

‘‘I am happy to announce that Mr President has graciously accepted to visit Nasarawa State on February 6,” he said.

He said during the visit, President Buhari would inaugurate various projects initiated and completed by the current administration for the benefit of the people.

Photo: 4-Year Old Boy Abducted In Abuja

A four-year-old boy has been declared missing in Zuba, Abuja. The child identified as Abba Auwal Baba, went missing on Tuesday, at about 4:00pm.

A resident of the area, told Daily Trust, the child went out to play around the central mosque area after he returned from school but didn't return home.

Abdullahi said some residents around the central mosque said they saw a woman with the child, but did not suspect her of abduction.

His parents have reported the incident to the police and vigilantes. The FCT police command spokesman, DSP Anjuguri Manzah, confirmed there was a report of a missing child at Zuba police division. He said the police were investigating the recurring incidents of missing children in the area. So sad!

Kim Kardashian and Kanye West announced the name of their baby girl on Friday.

Kardashian posted their daughter's name on Twitter with a simple tweet that read, "Chicago West."

While the celebrity couple did not offer an explanation for the unique name, Kanye West grew up in the Windy City. Chicago joins the couple's daughter North, 4, and son Saint, 2.

Kanye and Kim welcomed Chicago via surrogate on Monday.



Nigerian Epileptic Mum Who Killed 18-Month-Old Daughter Spared Jail

A Nigerian mum who killed her 18-month-old daughter when she suffered an epileptic fit at the wheel has been spared jail.

Chidinma Anya, 45, was slammed by Old Bailey judge Rebecca Poulet for driving despite being told not to by a neurologist.

The Judge said mum-of-four Anya had an "intermittent and unreliable" attitude to her medication.

Anya killed the youngest of her children, 18-month-old Eugenie, and left electrician Dean Snow unable to work for several months when her Vauxhall Zafira people mounted a grass verge before ploughing into his van in November 2015.

Herdsmen Kill Farmer In Ogun State

Suspected herdsmen have hacked a farmer to death on his farmland in Ogun State.

The farmer identified as Adetona Owolabi was allegedly killed on Thursday in his farm at Afon, Imeko-Afon local government area of the state.

The incident occurred few hours after the Ogun State Government took proactive measures to prevent clashes between herdsmen and farmers in the state.

The Nation gathered that Adetona was working on his farm located few metres away from the  Afon bridge along Owode/Abeokuta road when he observed that herds of cattle were grazing on the farm and ate his  cassava, yam and vegetables.

The All Progressives Congress (APC) National Public Secretary, Bolaji Abdullahi, has expressed fear that the current wave of killings by herdsmen in parts of the country would constitute a serious threat to the party’s 2019 presidential bid.

He therefore wants the problem resolved immediately.

Abdullahi, while speaking in Ikeja, Lagos, on Thursday night at the reading of his book, “On A Platter of Gold,” said the killings have “the potential to affect our political fortune if we don’t deal with it decisively with the way we dealt with Boko Haram.”

“If we fail to do that, we also know the consequences because we had a recent experience,” he said in response to a question at the event.

President Muhammadu Buhari said on Thursday night that he went temporarily into coma when former President Goodluck Jonathan called to congratulate him on his victory in the 2015 presidential election.

The President stated this when he hosted All Progressives Congress (APC) leaders to a dinner at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.

He also recounted his experiences in the Nigerian electoral processes and his eventual victory in the 2015 presidential election.

Brazil Legend, Pele Hospitalised

Pele is in hospital after collapsing due to exhaustion. The 77-year-old, a three-time World Cup winner, collapsed on Thursday according to the FWA and is being monitored in hospital in Brazil.

The FWA were due to host a dinner in his honour.

Pele "has undergone a series of tests which appear to point to severe exhaustion", said the FWA.

"He is on fluids while doctors monitor his recovery. Thankfully there is no suggestion of anything more serious."

Carpenter Pleads Guilty To Raping His Daughter

A 45-year old carpenter, Olumide Akinleye, who allegedly cohabited with and raped his own daughter, is to remain behind bars pending judgment, an Iyaganku Chief Magistrates’ Court ruled in Ibadan on Friday.

Chief Magistrate Modina Akanni, who gave the ruling, said Akinleye should be kept in police custody until when the hearing would begin.

The lustful father had admitted committing the offence.

Akinleye, who lives in Odo-Ona Elewe in Ibadan, is facing a charge of having unlawful carnal knowledge of his biological daughter.

Court Nullifies Installation Of 21 Kings By Ajimobi

An Oyo State High Court presided over by Justice Olajumoke Aiki on Friday declared the review of the 1957 Olubadan Chieftaincy Declaration and other Related Chieftaincies in Ibadan land by the Justice Akintunde Boade Review Commission, which was set up by the Oyo State Government, as unconstitutional, illegal, null, void and of no effect.

The commission had recommended, among others, the creation of several monarchs in Ibadan which led to the installation of 21 kings by the state Governor Abiola Ajimobi.

But the Osi Olubadan of Ibadan land, Rashidi Ladoja, challenged the composition and recommendations of the commission in court, joining Ajimobi as co-defendant.

Researchers Develop Computer Program That Can Predict When A Hospital Patient Will Die

A team of researchers at Stanford University in the US has developed a computer program that can predict when a hospital patient will die with unnerving level of accuracy.

According to the team, their program is right 90% of the time. It will be used to provide appropriate end-of-life car to hospital patients with a terminal disease.

The program uses artificial intelligence and was trained through analysis of 160,000 adult and child patient files from Stanford and Lucile Packard Children's hospital.

It looked at things in health records such as diagnosis, procedures performed and which medicine a patient was taking. When the algorithm was applied to 40,000 active patients (it was asked to predict which would die in the next three to twelve months) it was correct in 90% of cases.

University Of Lagos To Have Own TV

University of Lagos, UNILAG has commended President Muhammadu Buhari for approving a TV licence for the institution, UNILAG TV.

The vice chancellor of the university, Oluwatoyin Ogundipe, made the commendation at a meeting with the Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, Femi Adesina, and the Senior Special Assistant, Garba Shehu, at the Presidential Villa.

Mr. Ogundipe expressed optimism that the TV station would enhance research-oriented education and ease communication within and outside the university campus.

He said the TV station would completely alter the communication style in the university, and enhance its visibility across the continent.

Dead Woman Gives Birth 10 Days After She Died

A woman who was nine months pregnant when she died suddenly reportedly 'gave birth' to the baby ten days later. Staff at the funeral parlour discovered the stillborn child in the 33-year-old mother's coffin.

The baby was found next to mum-of-five Nomveliso Nomasonto Mdoyi‚ from Mthayisi village in South Africa, on the eve of her funeral.

Lindokuhle Funeral parlour owner Fundile Makalana told Times Live : "We were so shocked and frightened that we did not even have time to look at the sex of the baby.

"I have been in the business for more than 20 years and I have never heard of a dead woman giving birth."

Former South African Homeland Leader Dies @ 94

Lucas Mangope, a leader of one of South Africa’s tribal homelands who resisted the end of apartheid, died on Thursday at the age of 94.

Mangope was president from 1977 to 1994 of Bophuthatswana, one of South Africa’s “self-governing” homelands, or bantustans - fragmented islands of rural poverty where most black South Africans were literally confined under white rule.

During the often-tense negotiations that paved the way to majority rule in 1994, Mangope maintained that Bophuthatswana would remain independent. He was ousted in a coup weeks before the elections that brought Nelson Mandela to power. What a ripe age to die!

Police Arrest Three For Stealing, Selling Three-Year-Old Boy For N75,000

The Police Command in Nassarawa State has arrested three suspects for allegedly stealing a three-year-old boy in Angwan Masachin, Jam’a Keffi, Keffi Local Government Area of the state.

The command’s spokesman, DSP Kennedy Idirisu, on Friday in Lafia said that the suspects were arrested on January 16.

Idirisu said the arrest followed a report by one Mr. Daniel Abu at the Keffi Police Station over the disappearance of his son.

The Police Public Relations Officer said that two of the suspects were arrested by detectives from the division for allegedly conspiring and kidnapping the boy. He said that during interrogation, the suspects confessed to stealing the child and selling same to a woman in Masaka, Karu Local Government Area of the state for N75,000.

NYSC Members Give Birth At Orientation Camp

Two pregnant women transferred from Kwara NYSC to Oyo State camp in Iseyin were delivered of baby girls at the ongoing orientation camp.

The NYSC Coordinator in Oyo State, Mrs Ifeoma Anidobi, on Friday, said the babies were delivered on Tuesday, the first day of the ongoing orientation course of 2017 batch B, stream II NYSC members.

“The first baby arrived in the early hours of Tuesday at the General hospital, Iseyin while the second baby came later in the day.

“The mothers are corps members deployed to Kwara state who are dislodged to Oyo state for their three-week orientation course.

New Zealand Prime Minister Pregnant With First Child

New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern announced Friday that she and her partner, Clarke Gayford, are expecting their first child in June.

"Clarke and I are really excited that in June our team will expand from two to three, and that we'll be joining the many parents out there who wear two hats," she said in a Facebook post.

"I'll be Prime Minister AND a mum, and Clarke will be 'first man of fishing' and stay-at-home dad."

Tanzanian Government Bans Celebrities From Posting Raunchy Photos Online

Through Music Regulatory Board, popularly known as BASATA, the Tanzanian Government has banned all celebrities from posting nudes photos on social media while in their line of work.

According to the Executive secretary of the Board, those affected by the ban will not be allowed to do music for a period of six months.

Actress Susan Michael aka Pretty Kind was the first one to be summoned by the Magufuli's government for posting nude photos on Instagram, Facebook and Snapchat.

Pretty Kind apologised to the government and is now serving her ‘sentence’.

Police To Clamp Down On One Chance Robbers In Lagos State

The Lagos State Commissioner of Police, CP, Police, Edgal Imohimi, yesterday vowed to clamp down on perpetrators of “one chance “ and traffic robbery in the state.

This came as the CP urged residents of the state to shun ethnic sentiments and avoid ethnic colouration of crimes to sustain the peace in the state.

Imohimi spoke during a town hall meeting hosted by Area B Command, Apapa. Imohimi also urged residents of the state to be vigilant and “not be carried away by free and cheap things which often made them victims.

Treat Killer Herdsmen As Terrorists, PFN Tells FG

The Pentecostal Fellowship of Nigeria, PFN, has decried the incessant killings of innocent Nigerians by marauding herdsmen across Nigeria, citing the continuous massacre of innocent Nigerians in Benue and Kaduna states.

PFN National President, Rev. Felix Omobude, in a statement in Benin City, expressed worry over the manner herdsmen continued to kill innocent Nigerians with ease and precision and escape justice.

He called on the Federal Government to wake up to its responsibility and treat the herdsmen as terrorist and fight them in the same zeal it fought Boko Haram and bring them to justice immediately.

Another Customs Blunder? Pregnant Woman Going To Work Hit By Customs Bullets

Only this week at Ebule Egba in Lagos State, customs officials were accused of shooting dead a rice smuggler which led to a huge protest by citizens. A major road was blocked and people would have taken laws into their hands if not for the quick intervention of RRS officials and other security agents who rushed to the scene to calm down the situation and asked people to go home.

Now another happens in Ogun State. According to Vanguard, a pregnant woman has been reportedly shot by a Customs officer attached to the Federal Operation Unit, FOU, Ikeja, on her way to the office, yesterday morning.

The pregnant woman, identified as Olugunna Bukola, was hit by stray bullets around Iyana-Iyesi area of Ota in Ado-Odo/Ota Local Government, Ogun State.

Zimbabwe Opposition Leader Roy Bennett Killed In Helicopter Crash Alongside Wife

The Zimbabwean politician Roy Bennett who had two spells in prison under President Robert Mugabe has been killed alongside his wife in a helicopter crash.

The 60-year-old was reportedly killed with wife Heather after the helicopter came down in a mountainous area of New Mexico.

Mr Bennett spent years campaigning against Mugabe and was famously jailed in 2009 while trying to negotiate a power-sharing government with the dictator.

Following his release and fearing further charges against him he fled to South Africa.

Lagos State Government Demolishes 21 Structures

The Lagos State Government yesterday demolished no fewer than 21 buildings allegedly erected illegally on government’s land in Ogudu axis, to restore original master plan of the community.

Property on the parcel of land, 7.6 hectares, at Abule Shoko area, Ogudu, were demolished by the Lagos State Building Control Agency, LASBCA, to develop mass housing.

It was gathered that LASBCA officials stormed the slummy area at the early hours of yesterday and commenced demolition, forcing residents to struggle to save their property. It was gathered that the state government had over a year ago, issued quit notices to the occupants and that another notice was served to the owners four months ago before yesterday’s demolition exercise.

General Manager, LASBCA, Lekan Shodeinde, said government planned to use the land for mass housing development, noting that the affected buildings had been marked for demolition a year ago.

Herdsmen Killings: Benue Women Protest At NASS

The New Year killings and recent attacks in Benue State reverberated in Abuja on Thursday as angry citizens, mostly women flooded the National Assembly in protest.

The protesters under the aegis of the Benue Women Forum wore black dresses and carried placards that had various inscriptions like: “Black New Year day in Benue”, “where are the Soldiers- wake up;” “where is UN?””Atomic weapon in Benue;” “No land for cattle colony”; “Almakura stop housing our killers” “war in Benue”; “we want peace”; “Tiv women mourn their husbands, wives, daughters and sons murdered by Fulani herdsmen,” etc.

Kastina: Gunmen Cause Havoc, Abduct Girl, 14 From Father's House, Kill Policeman In Another Incident

Unknown gunmen have abducted a 14-year-old girl in Kankia local government area of Katsina State. Father of the victim, Alhaji Salisu Mai-Tiles, said the gunmen invaded his residence at Sabuwar-Abuja quarters in Kankia at 1:30 a.m. on Thursday.

He said that three well- armed persons broke into his residence and demanded for money, while the remaining gang members stayed outside.

“They asked me to give them money, which I did; whatever they asked we never objected to their demand to save our lives, but unfortunately, they went with my 14-year-old daughter,” he said.
