Photos: GNext Plans Home Makeover For Nigerian National Flag Designer, Pa Akinkunmi

Pa Taiwo Akinkunmi (left)...His house on the right

Pa Taiwo Akinkunmi (MON) is presumably a household name in Nigeria being the great intellectual who designed the Nigerian flag at the age of 25 while he studied in London.

His flag design was accepted amongst other designs, for its ingenuity and depth. This undeniably shot Pa Akinkunmi into limelight and enlisted him amongst Nigeria’s heroes and icons.

Now, Pa Taiwo Akinkunmi, a man whose ingenious work of creativity we still enjoy each time we gaze at the Nigerian flag, coupled with Parkinson’s disease, lives in an unbefitting state in his Ibadan residence. Click to continue reading and see more pics.

A group of young, impact- oriented minds under the cover of GNext Youth Organization have taken it upon themselves to give this great icon’s home a complete makeover.

They would renovate his living room and bedroom. Electrical appliances windows, window frames and furniture will be replaced and also to give the home a beautiful ambiance, flowers will be planted round the house as well as repaint of the fence.

Renovations are to commence 8th of May and last till 10th of May 2013 when it would be declared open by the First Lady of Oyo State in a ceremony that would equally mark his birthday.

    1. With all due respect, how is he a hero? He was just lucky he's design was chosen, mind you other people brought their own designs too. Besides that Green and white is not fine to me.Was he not paid for the design? Secondly where are his children???

    2. Truth be told, some Igbo people have complex problem whenever they sees any success story written with an attachment of Yoruba name, u would be finding one or two things to downgrade the whole issue whereas if the flag was designed by someone from your tribe, u won't type all these rubbish u called comments. You people should try for once to be open minded and think beyond your region. Yoruba people received u with great hospitality but u still prefer to pay them back with all sorts of hatred while Hausa people are doing otherwise to u and u will still put the same blame on Yoruba again. You people must try to see beyond your region and treat your good host with kindness.

    3. All the folks who say the flag is drab..I laugh at all of you cos I believe you are over 25 years and here u are hopping from blog to blog..trying to gain anonymous popularity. Your prayer now should be that you all haters fall with Alzheimers so that u can forget that you ever saw the nigerian flag. The flag is drab but ur fathers still have to come to attention when its going up the pole. Smh for so many of you! Pray that poverty dosent bathe u for ur nasty comments. Nonsense! Btw! Thumbs up to Gnext! I hope Nigeria (GEJ) is seeing this.

    4. Thank you Ebukah. U took the words right out of my mouth! He must have been paid for the design na....and where are his children?! We just like to put too much sentiments in silly things. It's good that this organisation took it upon themselves to renovate his house. Good for him.

    15. You are too stupid but i dont blame it. do you know what sort of recognition this man will get if he created the American or British flag. Go and see how much of a national treasure someone like Pa Akinkunmi would be in a country that knows how to treat its people right. I dont blame you, you dont know any better because of how your government has always treated the average man.

By the way the flag is too easy to design abi. Ok which easy thing have you thought of and done that is worthy of recognition as of today?

The dirtiest house on our cul de sac in Lekki phase 1 is a yoruba man (married with kids) whose wife is a doctor (paediatrician)!! That definitely disturbs me. That is the only house where big rats like antelopes (mild exaggeration) play at his gate in broad day light. I have been tempted so many times to go and talk to him about his filth but my husband always stops me.

Please this comment does not reflect on yoruba people in general so no one should take it personal.

During the civil war, the Nigerian army used to identify igbos by their smell. So what are we sayinghere. You igbos smell like death. Many of u especially those alaba, ladipo boysand even normal igbo boys smell etc. And its one particular smell. U guys equate being fair skinned to cleanliness. The only reason why u say yorubas are dirty is because 70% of yorubas are dark skinned. So you equate being dark to being dirty. Theonly yoruba people that smell are market women but to say many of them smell is a blatant lie. And the idiot that said yorubas are feeling inferior, inferior to what? You peoplewey no get lineage. Claiming israel. youigbos like to start fight and when people fight back u start crying victim. It has always been in your blood. The northerners are killing you people like fowl today because of what ur forefathers did. The way you abuse yorubas now at any given opportunity is the way u people abuse hausas in those days, till dey started dealing wiv u, u have started wiv yorubas calling us cowards and dirty because we no dey finish una for south-west! can u call an hausa man coward?. 26. Cleanliness is a personal thing. Mr clean Igbo Man. Why don't you manifest your personal cleanliness outwardly. The two major cities in the East namely Aba and Onitsha, are the dirtiest in West Africa and indeed the whole of Africa. Cleaning them up has been a very daunting task. Successive governments are unable to execute that feat. Go to an average Igbo trader's house, you cannot drink water in his house. The toilet pungs. Please remove the speck in your eyes before seeing the log in another person's. Troublesome bad - mouthed people. The cleanest Nigerians are the Calabers, then comes the Itshekiris. The Yorubas and the Igbos happen to be on the same pedestal. No one is greater than the other. I am Igbo and I know.

  30. SHOCKED AT THE LEVEL OF IGNORANCE ON HERE, IT IS NOT ABOUT WHAT HE DID OR HOW HE IS LIVING IT IS THE SENSE THAT A MAN ADDED TO A COUNTRY'S HISTORY, HE DID SOMETHING THAT MAKES US RECOGNIZED AND TILL TODAY WE STILL USE. THE MAN AT A YOUNG AGE DID HIS OWN PART FOR THE COUNTRY AND GAVE US SOMETHING THAT WE CAN BE PROUD OF, BUT WE ARE NOT AND WE LEAVE HIM ALONE TO HIS MEMORIES INSTEAD OF AT LEAST HONORING HIM, THANKING HIM FOR SUCH AN AMAZING GIFT. THIS IS WHY OUR COUNTRY IS THE WAY IT IS AND IT IS SAD...OUR FLAG IS NOT SIMPLE, IT IS NOT UGLY IT SHOWS WHO WE ARE AS A PEOPLE... AND NIGERIANS HAVE SHOWN THEMSELVES.

  32. If Taiwo Akinkunmi had designed the US national flag, I do not think he would have been reduced to memories, as has taken place here in Nigeria. If he designed the Nigerian flag, and stayed back in London, his situation wouldn't have been this pitiable. Whether we like it or not, his name is in the Nigerian history books for designing a symbol of our indepence, of our sovereignty, and of our unity. It is irrelevant, whether or not he was paid at the time. He has contributed to Nigeria as we know it - because of him, our flag is green, white, green.I honestly believe such a gesture to honour him shouldn't be a subject of debate. If you believe otherwise, I put it to you that you are unpatriotic.
