An Algerian military transport plane carrying military personnel
and their family members today crashed into a mountain, in north-east of the
country, killing 77 passengers out of the 78 people on board. The Hercules
C-130 crashed in Oum al-Bouaghi province, due to bad weather conditions a
report says.
The survivor, a soldier is now being treated for head
injuries at a military hospital, while rescue workers say a lot of bodies were
burnt beyond recognition and the numbers of women and children involved in the
crash was high.
The country’s president, Abdelaziz Bouteflika has already declared
three days of national mourning to begin on Wednesday. The last time the
country witnessed a plane crash was in 2003, when it lost 102 citizens in a
single crash. May the souls of the departed rest in peace.
