Tobacco Control Nigeria is a public health and policy change
campaign project using Social Media to advance tobacco control and support the
passage of a comprehensive Tobacco Control (TC) law compliant with the World
Health Organization’s Framework Convention on Tobacco Control (FCTC) in
Nigeria. This advocacy started on 31st May 2013 which was the World No Tobacco
Day.
World No Tobacco Day (WNTD) is celebrated every year to
highlight the health risks associated with tobacco use and to advocate for
effective policies to reduce tobacco consumption. Tobacco kills nearly 6
million people each year, of which more than 600,000 are non-smokers dying from
breathing second-hand smoke. Without comprehensive tobacco prevention and
control policies, it is estimated that smoking prevalence in the African region
will increase by nearly 39 percent by 2030.
In Nigeria, advocates are currently pushing for passage of a
comprehensive tobacco control bill to help save lives from the deadly products.
In celebration of WNTD, TobaccoCtrl will have a daily
competition across its social media platforms (Facebook, Twitter and Google
Plus) with daily airtime giveaways to winners every day from Monday 26th May to
Saturday 31st May 2014. Follow us to learn more about our giveaway.
Tobacco Control Nigeria continues to call on members of the
National Assembly to speedily pass a strong National Tobacco Control Bill into
law, as this will save the lives of millions of Nigerians and generations
unborn from the harmful social and economic effects of tobacco use.
