Oyedepo Speaks On Why Private Universities Are Expensive In Nigeria

Bishop David Oyedepo, the founder of Living Faith Church has said private universities in Nigeria are expensive because the cost of maintaining and giving quality education is high. He also criticized Nigerians about believing in spending millions of naira on parties, but can’t spend such on their children’s education. Bishop Oyedepo addressed this issue while speaking to Journalists on Friday in Ota, Ogun State. His words;

“I’m sure we all agree that education is expensive. Education carries cost; nothing of value is free. Our mission for years long, before we started any university or secondary school, was a bursary awarding church and we have not stopped doing that till tomorrow.”
“Our problem most of the time is priority; an average Nigerian can spend N1m on burial but to spend N200,000 on education (is a problem), because of wrong priority. Continue below..

“On a yearly basis, we have N1.5trn that Nigerians spend to overseas universities, so people thrive on it. Nigerians spend N463bn a month on recharge cards, how much are they paying for schools fees? So it’s all a matter of priority. This is the largest market for telephone in the world. Now, to pay N500,000, some people have only one son, they have huge business and houses all over the places, they will never pay it.”

On why he does not respond to controversial reports, Oyedepo said

“My understanding of opposition, persecution is simply someone’s opinion harshly expressed. Everybody has a right to his opinion. Today, millions follow after Christ but you will be surprised that when you get to Israel some people do not believe that Christ has come.

“People have rights to their opinions. I naturally don’t feel it’s necessary (to respond). The energy I would need to react, I can use it to make moves. I have enough to think about than start running after a man who says you are a fool.

“If he says you are a fool and you are behaving so, then he’s right. If you leave your job and start pursuing somebody who says you are a fool, he has already said so, your going around doesn’t change it. So why going around, why don’t you settle on your job and make moves?

“I’ve also come to understand that those who make news hardly watch them, they are so busy making news while others are busy watching.”

    1. I think the missionaries established free schools way back,
I think he should be more worried about raising the standard of living of millions than giving the best standard of education to a few, how many Nigerians have 500,000
Go to your village and count, 1.5 trillion on education abroad for 170 million Nigerians amounts about 8000 each, which we know that no school fees is still in that range even in Nigeria meaning that it's only the privilege youth that get to school in places he talked about, Jesus feed 5000 people without considering the cost of a health meal, if he's followers can't educate 5000 people without considering the cost of quality education, then I was wrong thinking christian meant christ like
      IMO

    1. Can u expect such a worldly comparison to the fact and truth the people needed from him. The people who builded the church on promises that their children will have a free education were booted out with introduction of exorbitant school fees. Then it was a Christian school when members efforts and monies were needed. Now it is Rich Nigerians don't like to pay school fees, but they like spending millions on burial. If it were Nigerians. ...the school would not have been built. Shame on your greed. So called man of God.

  5. I love listening to this man; he is always very interesting to listen to, and there are lots of wisdom nuggets to pick as he speaks. However, I believe more can be done to bring fees down so that the not-so rich can access quality education.

    1. But they are not imparting the society positively in the sense that they look like any ordinary businessmen who are just busy searching for how to survive on others. I used to respect this man and Adeboye, but later on I discovered that they too personally needed this money more than the people they pretend to help. Infact they are just a parasite like TB Joshua, even if tb joshua is not better than them, because at least tb Joshua is still closer to the poor than these.

  6. Not every one throws a one million naira party. ..this just shows how clueless people can be. The ones that can afford it pay it...that leaves the majority out.

  11. How does he expect someone who earns just 18k a month excluding tax to afford 500k on university education?

  13. Hw does collective sum of amount spent on recharge cards equate to a singular tuition fees paid on a student? D truth is fees charged by private institutions are outrageously high nd not defending the obvious.

  15. People can choose to spend on whatever they like( as long as they have the purchasing power) & its not for Mr Oyedepo to criticize that .

He chooses to spend his money on 4 private jets which is not my business so why should people´s spending on musicians should now be his own cup of tea too?

  26. Why did most people avoid commenting with their names? Nobody wants to be cursed, but they can insult a man of God

    1. There is no curse any where. When you are curse is when someone make you a slave to obey him e.g. paying tithes and offering because person talk. That is why everybody read bible these days and talk for others to pay him tithes as well. No one is afraid to comment with his name...to avoid a curse. But it says saves time to use anonymous. If one still believe the threat of curse it means you are still their mugun. That is mugun to those criminals called men of God.

  30. Some comments are so ignorant, it's shameful. NUC ranked covenant university the 13th best in the country in 2013 and the 2nd best in 2014. Like the Bishop said, everyone is entitled to his own opinion but it's better to talk facts, not rubbish. How can you say CU is unranked.
