Alaba Trader Kills Customer During Price Negotiation

                                                                          Late Yaya
The Lagos State Police Command has arrested a trader, Mr. Lawrence Ikonne, for allegedly killing a buyer, Isa Yaya, because the deceased haggled over the price of a commodity.

The incident occurred at Ikonne’s residence on Afro Close, Afromedia Estate, Okokomaiko, Lagos. Ikonne is a trader selling electronic appliances at Alaba International Market, Ojo, Lagos.

It was learnt that the victim, 22-year-old Yaya, from northern Nigeria, had gone to Ikonne’s apartment to buy a fairly used air conditioner. Yaya, it was said, usually bought and re-sold condemned iron and electrical materials.

Punch gathered that Ikonne, 26, from the Isiala-Ngwa South Local Government Area of Abia State, had gone to Alaba market on the morning of Friday, October 10, where he first met Yaya, then invited him to his house to buy his fairly used air conditioner.

When they got to the house, it was said that the two of them went inside a room to bring out the commodity, and they started haggling over the price.

It was gathered that Yaya insisted on buying the air conditioner below N5, 000- a price which did not go down well with Ikonne.

As the haggling continued, a fight was said to have ensued between the two which turned violent during which Ikonne allegedly hit Yaya with a plank in the belly.

During interrogation, the suspect explained that he had asked Yaya to either pay N5, 000 or assist him to return the commodity to where they brought it from but Yaya had refused. Ikonne added that he felt insulted by this attitude.

He said, “I had not met the young man before. I met him that morning at the Alaba market, and asked him to buy one of my appliances: an air conditioner. He actually looked like a cart pusher. When we got home, we both went in to remove the product, and we brought it outside for negotiation.

“As we continued, he said he would pay less than N5, 000. I replied that he should assist me to return it to where we took it from, but he refused. In the process, we started fighting. He even asked me to pay him for helping me bring it out. I was mad, and I hit his belly with a plank.

“When I realised he had fainted, I tied him with a rope and dragged him into a corner. I also fled the house.”

Our correspondent gathered that it was one of Ikonne’s co-tenants who noticed Yaya’s corpse where he was tied up.

He then raised the alarm, and reported the case to the Okokomaiko police station. The policemen later came to arrest Ikonne.

The Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Kenneth Nwosu, said he would call our correspondent back on the matter. He, however, had yet to do so as of press time.

Meanwhile, our correspondent gathered that Ikonne had been transferred to the State Criminal Investigations Department, Yaba, and he would be charged to court soon.

  3. I am not justifying him for killing the aboki cart pusher, but cart pushers are so annoying.I wanted to sell a working stabilizer and a vcd to one of them,he said he would pay me #100 for the stabiliser and #50 for the vcd.I plug it for him to know they were working but he insisted that it was the coil and panel he needed.I felt like blowing his mouth that day.The funniest part is that they dont remove the coil and panel as alleged. They resell it at costly prices to other interested customers. They put it for sell at the roadside where they sell sofas and other fairly used electronics.

  4. When he hit him with the plank and the victim fainted, he did not go to get help. Instead, he tied him with a rope and abandon him there. It was intentional and ment for the victim to die.

  5. IGBO at it again.

Small time,he will be claiming to be the victim, as i can see them blaming the victim even here on this blog.

How somebody can even be blaming the cart pusher here is so freaking unbelievable..

    So sad.

So, because the cart pusher wouldn't help you to put the ac unit back, he has to be killed. Insanity at the highest level of presentation.

  7. like seriously? y'all gon' sit down here and blame the poor dead guy? really? !!!
first of all, im I the only one who thinks this story don't add up?
apparently, the accused intended to kill the guy, why didn't he call for help after hitting him so hard? he tied him up instead and fled the scene. Thats murder and he would definitely pay for it.
@Olu Atlantic, calling out the Igbo tribe makes you sound less exposed and less informed. Crime is not peculiar to any tribe.

    1. Swerve,

      I totally disagree with you.

CRIME IS HIGHLY PECULIAR TO IGBOS.

      Take it or leave it.

The root cause ( sorry, the cause) of it is because they worship money too much.

I visited 4 Asian countries about 2 years ago as part of a study group and I was so ashamed seeing all the Nigerians ( sorry, Biafrans)incarcerated in those countries just for peddling drugs.

They do this just to meet up.

Just go to Linda IKEJI' blog and see how she is so materialistic and for her it is just " this one just bought this and that one just bought that".

She is one FREAK of a materialistic girl just like her people.

Unnecessary display of wealth is very peculiar to them and when the poor ones amongst them see this they have no choice but to go into crime to get the money so that they too can start displaying the "ego"

We should be able to talk about it so that they can see the ill effect of it.

It is just too freaking obscene.

If you like, you can see me as one big hater. I don't care. I am just being honest.

Conscience is an open wound and only the truth can heal it.

    2. The educated ones are not as violent as the uneducated ones. Most Igbo traders are very aggressive and get worked up unnecessarily. i know so many pleasant Igbo people that are well behaved and peaceful.

  10. I am sorry but they should let the trader go, Cart pushers and their likes act like they have no family. They act like if they die they have nothing to lose. He must have hurt the poor man with the words of his mouth so bad he felt hurt and had to hit him. If he had killed him, there would have been no case because he would have fled. For that reason they should let him go, except his family who I know will never come forward show face

    1. therizGodoo, your comment sent cold shivers down my spine. It reminds me of my mum's saying that when they are carrying someone else's corpse, people who are not affected will conclude they carrying logs of wood.
      case closed.

    3. I am so sure if the accused had been the victim, you will be shouting Genocide.

When Hausa person kill Ibo person, you say it is One big hate crime/Genocide but when Ibo person kill hausa person you now say that the Ibo person should be left to go free.

Does this make sense to you or you are just being blinded by ethnicity as you always are?
      olu@atlanta.

    4. There is no one more blinded by ethnicity on this forum than olu@atlanta but unfortunately that log in his eye called bigotry will not allow him to see that fact. Tho I vehemently, disagree with what @anon 12:12 said, there is nowhere ethnicity was mentioned. He talks of honesty, so he should ask himself this - Does his own tribe lack crime?
I don't know what amuses me more, such myopic opinions dispensed as 'words of wisdom' or the tragic need he seems to have to bring up the 'ethnicity card' at the slightest opportunity.LOL

  11. This is the main reason it is not good to fight. If he had left him when he refused to returned the commodity,he would not have found himself in such a mess.
