FG Ban Sale Of Unregistered Local Gin

The Director-General of NAFDAC, Dr Paul Orhii has said, the Federal Government through its agency NAFDAC, is set to ban, destroy and confiscate unregistered gins popularly known as ogogoro and bitters or other illegal alcoholic beverages produced in the country. Orhii said this was necessary because investigations by NAFDAC and other partners had linked the deaths in Ondo and Rivers states to the methanol contamination in the local gin.

The statement was made yesterday at a joint news conference organized by NAFDAC and the Nigerian Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) in Abuja.

He advised members of the public to desist from consuming them and urged them to report to relevant authorities any sale or distribution of such drinks which are not registered.
