Mercy Akide Udoh, one of the greatest ever players in African women’s football, has told the BBC that it is disgraceful that the Super Falcons have not been paid their bonuses. They are currently refusing to leave their hotel until the Nigeria Football Federation hands over more than $23,000 (£18,000) reportedly owed to each player after winning the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations on Saturday.
Udoh, who used to play for Nigeria and helped the country win the African title on three previous occasions, says she hoped for better for this younger generation:
‘Their parents are waiting for them to come back and come and put food on the tables’.
Udoh, who now coaches in the US, told BBC Newsday’s Bola Mosuro that a fourth African title for Nigeria “should have been a happy ending”.
