Nigerian Gospel Singer, Eric Arubayi Is Dead

Nigerian gospel singer and 3rd runner up of Idols West Africa Season 1, Eric Arubayi is dead. He died today at the Delta State University Teaching Hospital after fallen sick earlier in the week. He is survived by his wife and a child. May his soul rest in peace. Such painful death.

Kenya: Speaker Justine Muturi's Bodyguard Shot Dead

A police officer attached to the Nairobi home of the Speaker of National Assembly Justine Muturi was Saturday morning shot dead by his colleague in an argument. The shooting happened at about 2am at the Thigiri Ridge house.

The assailant was arrested after the incident and is being held at the Gigiri police station for questioning.

He shot his Administration Police colleague three times in the chest killing him instantly.

Senior police officers who visited the scene said there were signs of a long scuffle between the two before the shooting happened.

Former Miss Tanzania Charged For Being In Possession Of Marijuana

Former Miss Tanzania Wema Issack Sepetu appeared before the Kisutu Residents’ Magistrate Court, Tanzania to face charges of being found in possession of 1.80 grams of marijuana.

Public prosecutor Pamela Kinyambala told the court that the police conducted a search at Ms Sepetu’s house, located in Kunduchi-Ununio, where they found narcotics.

Ms Sepetu appeared before magistrate Thomas Simba along with Angelina Msigwa and Mr Selemani Abbas, who are her house help.

I Won’t Return Until Doctors Tell Me To - Buhari

President Muhammadu Buhari has said he would only return to Nigeria when his London doctors certify him well enough to do so.

“… I am extending my leave until the doctors are satisfied that certain factors are ruled out,” Mr. Buhari said in a February 5 letter to the President of the Senate, Bukola Saraki, informing the National Assembly of the extension of his vacation. The letter was exclusively obtained by Premium Times today.

Although snippets of the letter were publicised by the presidency and the Senate on February 5 and 6 respectively, this is the first time the entire text and copy of the correspondence would be made available.

Man Allegedly Hacks 85-Year-Old Mother To Death

The Osun State Police Command says it has arrested a man who allegedly killed his 85-year-old mother with a machete.

The police spokesperson, Folashade Odoro, said in a statement in Osogbo that the suspect, allegedly killed his mother with a machete, Mrs Taibat Ayiola, at Akinleye Village near Osu on Friday.

“The reason for the killing is yet to be ascertained because the suspect has not given any reasonable cause for his action.

Several Wounded As Iraq Police Clash With Protesters Seeking Reform

Iraqi security forces fired tear gas and rubber-coated bullets Saturday on protesters who attempted to march on Baghdad's fortified Green Zone to press demands for electoral reform, police said.

Boko Haram Kills Seven, Abducts Female Soldier

Some Boko Haram terrorists have attacked a convoy of Nigerian troops along the Ajiri-Dikwa Road, Borno State, killing seven soldiers.

It was learnt that the recruits, who were troops of the Operation Lafiya Dole, also killed an undisclosed number of the Boko Haram members.

An army source said the insurgents attacked the troops late on Thursday evening, adding that a female soldier was also abducted during the ambush.

$20bn NNPC Fraud: EFCC Discovers Diezani’s $37.5m Lagos Mansion

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission has discovered a $37.5m (N11.75bn) luxury high-rise building on Banana Island, Ikoyi, Lagos, allegedly belonging to the embattled former Minister of Petroleum Resources, Diezani Alison-Madueke.

This is just as the EFCC revealed on Friday that it discovered $9.3m and £74,000 belonging to a former Group Managing Director, Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation, Mr. Andrew Yakubu. The money was allegedly kept in a bungalow situated in the slums of Kaduna.

Commercial S*X Worker Breaks Daughter’s Head

Neighbours of 37-year-old Chioma Ochemba, a commercial sex worker in Ayobo area of Lagos, took away her daughter, a seven-year-old girl as she threatened to kill the girl on Monday.

Ochemba, an Imo State indigene, shocked her neighbours after she smashed a wood on the girl’s head, inflicting an injury that covered the child in blood, after accusing her of losing a N100 slippers she had bought for her the previous day.

One of her neighbours, Mr. Busari Tajudeen, said he was forced to intervene when Ochemba angrily grabbed the girl by the neck and hit her with a piece of wood.

Tajudeen promptly dragged the girl away from her and took the child to the Ayobo Police Division where a policewoman rushed her to the hospital for treatment.

“My husband lies a lot. Initially, when I met him, he lied that he was working, which I found out later was all lies. Whenever I ask him for money, he keeps giving me excuses and refuses to drop money.

“Later, I became pregnant for him and my husband forced me to abort it, saying he was not ready financially.” Oluwakemi disclosed that she had aborted three pregnancies on the insistence of the respondent, whom she described as highly irresponsible and lazy.

Afghan Death Toll From Heavy Snowfall, Avalanches Hits 191

The death toll from avalanches and freezing weather conditions across Afghanistan has risen to 191, officials said Friday, as rescue operations were underway in the worst-affected areas.

Twenty-two provinces in Afghanistan have been blanketed by days of heavy snowfall, triggering avalanches, destroying buildings and leaving many trapped in their snowbound homes.

"The death toll we have received from avalanches and freezing weather has risen to 191," Mohammad Aslam Sayyas, deputy minister for disaster management, told AFP.

An Ilorin based lawyer, Mr Tunde Jimoh has called on the Federal Government to impose a ban on hawking by children nationwide. Jimoh, who made the call in Ilorin on Friday, said government must protect the children to safeguard their future.

Gunmen Attack Kogi Police Station, Kills 2 Policemen, Detainee

Some gunmen in the early hours of today, attacked a police station at Eika community in Okehi Local Government Area of Kogi, killing two policemen and a detainee.

The bandits, it was gathered, invaded the police station at about 1 am and immediately opened fire on policemen on duty, killing them, alongside a detainee.

The heavily armed hoodlums, said to be about 10, later set the station ablaze and proceeded to the house of Mr Sadiq Obomi, Chairman, Eika Community Development Association, and killed him.

The State Commissioner of Police, Mr Abdulahi Chafe, confirmed the incident , promising to provide details later.

Be More Vigilant, FG Advises As Terrorists Plan To Attack Banks, Prisons

The Federal Government has alerted Nigerians to the plan by a Boko Haram affiliate, Muslim Brotherhood Cell in Kogi State, to acquire bomb-making chemicals and high-calibre weapons to perpetrate acts of terror, including attacks on banks, arms depots and prisons.

In a statement issued in Abuja on Friday, the Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, said intelligence monitoring has shown that the cell is making frantic efforts to advance its IED-making capability through the acquisition of such chemicals as Sodium Azide (for producing improvised detonators), Potassium Chlorate (alternative to ammonium nitrate used for producing IEDs) and Aluminium Powder (a fuel source for amplifying explosions).

A Lokoja Chief Magistrate’s Court on Friday ordered the remand of a middle-aged man, Hayatudeen Amoto, in prison for allegedly bombing TAO 109 FM Station, Kuroko, Okene in April, 2015.
The Chief Magistrate, Alhassan Husaini said the 2015 bombing of the FM Station in which four staff of the organisation lost their lives was heinous.

He said: “I find in the originating process upon which cognisance of this case is taken that one of the alleged offences is culpable homicide, contrary to Section 221 of the Penal Code Law.

“This offence is by no means a heinous crime which attracts upon conviction, the highest punishment known in criminal adjudication. For this singular reason including those I had earlier mentioned, I am not convinced that he would spring up for his trial.
