Serving Soldier Arrested In Connection With Lady's Kidnap

Bayelsa Police Command on Saturday said it arrested two suspects, a serving soldier and an engineer, for allegedly kidnapping a lady in Warri, Delta on April 4.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the suspects were paraded before journalists by the state police commissioner, Asuquo Amba, in Yenagoa.

Mr. Amba said the suspects abducted one Aya Beauty, aged 25, from Warri in Delta and took her to Bayelsa and kept her captive in a hotel while demanding a N24 million ransom from her family.

The commissioner said the command also arrested a former soldier, with a military pistol, along Zarama Road, on the East-West road during a stop-and-search operations.

Germany Deports ISIS Suspect Who Is NOT A Nigerian To Nigeria

Germany has deported to Nigeria, an alleged Islamic extremist, an ISIS suspect, deemed dangerous by authorities. He is a German citizen, not Nigerian.

The German news agency, dpa reports that the 22-year-old man, who was born in Germany and who hadn’t committed a crime, arrived in Lagos Thursday.

The unidentified man was one of two detained in February in Goettingen during an investigation of suspected attack plans. His partner is a 27 year-old Algerian. Both of them lived with their parents in Göttingen.

A 33-year-old Nigerian travelling to Soekarno–Hatta International Airport Jakarta, Indonesia, with narcotics has been arrested at the Murtala Mohammed International Airport, Lagos.

Lotachukwu Umeme, who was holding a Cote d’ lvoire International passport bearing the name Grou Bi Clauvis, was arrested while attempting to board a Qatar Airways flight to Indonesia.

After he tested positive for narcotic ingestion, 89 wraps of narcotics found to be methamphetamine weighing 1.205 kilogrammes were recovered from him, the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency said in a statement on Saturday.

JAMB Extends Registration Date For UTME

The Joint Admission and Registration Board (JAMB) has extended the registration date for the 2017 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examinations (UTME).

The board extended the deadline for sale of forms and registration for the exams from the earlier announced April 19 to May 5.

Consequently, the exam body also postponed the 2017 UMTE from May 13 to May 20.

The Registrar of the Board, Is-haq Oloyede disclosed this in a statement today and apologised to candidates for the sudden changes.

A mother-of-five with an enviable figure has defended herself against accusations she lied about giving birth to five children.

Simone Gately, 35, from Halifax, set up an Instagram account to document her fitness regimes and her family life, but was soon hit with comments from critics questioning whether she was ever pregnant.

One commenter said: "Keeping up a workout regime worth (sic) kids that small is impressive in itself but I wonder if her body went through the toll of birthing a child."

They added they don't doubt she's their mother but have suspicions about whether her body went through pregnancy.

Fayose Lambasts Sherif Over Walkout On Jonathan

Governor of Ekiti State and Chairman of the Governors’ Forum of the Peoples’ Democratic Party (PDP) has lambasted court recognised faction al chairman of the party, Senator Alimodu Sherif for walking out on party leaders on Thursday during a pre-reconciliation meeting held in Abuja at the instance of the party leaders and elders.

Party elders and leaders of PDP such as former President Goodluck Jonathan, Chairman of the party’s Borad of Trustees and other bigwigs, had convened the meeting which was attened by both factional groups of Shrif anf Alhaji Ahmed Makarfi. Senator Sherif had walked out on the leaders during the meeting saying that he was not given an opportunity to address the members in his capacity as the chairman of the party.

Muslim Man Killed By Mob For Dating Hindu Girl In India

A Muslim man was beaten to death for dating a Hindu girl in India, police said on Friday, in the
latest mob violence against minorities in the country. Mohammad Shalik, 20, was set upon by dozens of people from the town where he lived after he was spotted dropping off his girlfriend on his scooter near her home in the Gumla district of eastern Jharkhand state.

The mob tied him to a pole in front of the girl and lashed at him with sticks and belts in an ordeal that lasted for hours late on Wednesday. He died of his injuries on Thursday, police said.

"We are trying to find whether the mob was instigated by the (girl's) family," Chandan Kumar Jha, Gumla police chief said.

German Dies After Slumping At Lagos Airport

A German citizen, Mr. Brenard Christo, who slumped on Friday at the General Aviation Terminal of the Murtala Mohammed Airport, Ikeja, Lagos, has died at an undisclosed hospital.

The spokesman of the Lagos Airport Police Command, DSP Joseph Alabi, confirmed the German’s death on Saturday. Alabi said the deceased was waiting to board a local Arik Air flight when he suddenly collapsed.

He said medical personnel attached to the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) rushed to the scene to assist the German and was eventually taken to a hospital where he later died.

Polytechnic Loses 17 Students, Workers To Insurgency

The Rector, Federal Polytechnic Dr. Sadiq Yahya, has said that the institution lost 17 students and members of staff to the direct attacks carried out by members of the Boko Haram sect when they invaded and captured Mubi.

Yahya, who spoke to journalists in Mubi on Friday, also lamented the Federal Government’s delay in carrying out post-insurgency restoration of the tertiary institutions damaged in the North-East as a result of the insurgency.

According to him, the insurgency greatly destabilised academic activities of the institution. He also lamented that while all the operational vehicles of the institution were stolen and taken to Chad, no financial assistance either by the government or any private organisation had yet to come the way of the institution.

Syria war: US 'Disappointed' At Russia's Syria Stance

The US is "disappointed but not surprised" at Russia's response to its strikes on a Syrian air base suspected of storing chemical weapons.

At least six people are reported to have been killed in the US missile strikes early on Friday. Syria's ally Russia accused the US of encouraging "terrorists" with its unilateral actions. "I'm disappointed in that response," said US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson.

"It indicates their continued support for the Assad regime and, in particular, their continued support for a regime that carries out these type of horrendous attacks on their own people. "So I find it very disappointing, but, sadly, I have to tell you, not all that surprising," he added.

Two Female Suicide Bombers Die This Morning While Attempting To Bomb Maiduguri Mosque

At least two bodies were recovered outside a mosque in Maiduguri, Borno State, early Saturday, after two female suicide bombers attacked worshippers there, officials said.

The attackers struck as worshippers observed early morning prayers in an area called Jiddari Polo. Five people were injured in the attack, officials said.

Police said the girls could not gain much access into the targeted mosque. One of the suicide bombers later detonated an explosive that killed her fellow attacker too, police spokesperson, Victor Isuku, said. A similar attack was carried out on a mosque in the same location on October 23, 2015. About 18 worshippers were killed in that attack by a lone bomber.

Mosques Demolition: We’ll Make Ekiti Ungovernable, Says MURIC

The Muslim Rights Concern has condemned Ekiti State Governor, Ayodele Fayose’s plan to demolish some mosques in the state, describing it as an act of aggression. Four mosques were last week marked for demolition by the Ekiti State  government.

According to the government, Muslim faithful could contact cancer from the radioactive emission from petrol stations where the mosques are located.

Female Employees In Canada No Longer Mandated To Wear High Heels

The government of British Columbia (BC) says the requirement is discriminatory as well as being a health and safety issue because they are dangerous.  It says that high heel wearers face a risk of physical injury from slipping or falling as well as possible damage to the feet, legs and back.

Footwear should be designed to allow workers to operate safely, it says. The announcement of the ban comes after a provincial Green party politician in March introduced a bill in the BC legislature aimed at preventing employers from setting gender-based footwear requirements.

BC Green Party leader Andrew Weaver filed a private member's bill "designed to prevent employers from setting varying footwear and other requirements based on gender, gender expression or gender identity".

Meningitis: Health workers Infected In Zamfara

No fewer than 15 health workers in Zamfara State have been infected with the Type C meningitis in Skinkafi and Zumi local government areas of the state. The two local governments are among the worst hit by the epidemic, which has infected over 3,000 persons and killed over 350 since December 2016.

Zamfara, Sokoto and Katsina states are the most affected states, with Zamfara State alone recording over 200 deaths from the disease’s outbreak in the last few months. In separate visits to some hospitals in Shinkafi and Zumi by one of our correspondents, it was gathered that about 15 health workers had contracted the disease during the treatment of patients.

Some of the health workers who spoke with Saturday PUNCH said they got infected from treating victims of the disease without proper safety measures. One of the affected workers, who pleaded anonymity because of fear of victimisation, said the hospital facilities were overstretched and that they did not have enough personnel to handle the number of patients that came for treatment.

Drama In Court As Husband, Wife Threaten To Kill Each Other

Unable to endure any further beatings from his wife, a civil servant, Odule Titus, has pleaded with an Orile Agege Customary Court in Lagos State to dissolve his 17-year-old union to his wife, Eniola, for frequently beating him.

He said his life was no longer safe in the same home with his wife.

Titus, 63, who lives at 54, George Tiene Crescent, Hilltop Estate, Alimosho, told the court that his wife is a violent, destructive and aggressive woman.

“This is the third year I have packed out of the house because of her violent acts. She stabs me at every opportunity,” he said.

EFCC Uncovers N448m Hidden In Lagos Plaza

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, Lagos zone, yesterday evening uncovered yet another large sum of suspected laundered money to the tune of N448,850,000 (Four hundred and forty eight million, eight hundred and fifty thousand naira) only in a shop at LEGICO Shopping Plaza, Ahmadu Bello Way, Victoria Island, Lagos.

The money stashed in several Ghana Must Go bags were in N500 and N1000 denominations, hidden in a shop awaiting conversion into foreign currency.

Relying on information provided by a concerned whistle blower, operatives of the Commission swooped on the shopping complex and sought the identity of the owners of two shops, LS 64 and LS 67 which were under locks and keys.

Meningitis Kills 2 In Lagos, As Death Toll Rises To 438

The dreaded Cerebrospinal Meningitis, CRM, disease has hit Lagos State, killing two people as national death toll rises to 438, according to statistics released by the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control, NCDC on Friday.

The statistics released by NCDC revealed that as at 5 April, 2017, three cases of Meningitis were recorded in Lagos out of which two people died.According to the report, a total of 3,959 cases with 438 deaths have been reported, with 181 laboratory confirmed cases so far.

The NCDC said the apparent increase in number of cases was as a result of intensified case-finding going on in the affected States. Meningitis outbreaks are currently reported in 19 States with five States mostly affected, Zamfara, Katsina, Kebbi and Sokoto in the North-West zone and Niger in the North-Central zone of Nigeria.

FG Announces Discovery Of Eilepsy Drug

The Sheda Science and Technology Complex (SHETSCO) says it has carried out research and development of a Phyto-drug for the treatment of epilepsy.

 The Minister of Science and Technology announced this at the closing ceremony of the one week Technology Expo held at Eagle Square, Abuja. He said the drug was discovered by one of its 17 agencies charged with the responsibility of identifying local solution for local problems.

According to the Director General of the agency, Prof. Sunday Thomas, the anti-epilepsy drug was developed from the root of the plant belonging to the Celeastraceae family, which was identified and investigated for its chemical and biological properties for the treatment of epilepsy.

British actor Tim Pigott-Smith has died at the age of 70, his agent John Grant has said.  His career spanned more than four decades on stage and screen and he was made an OBE in the 2017 New Year Honours list for his services to drama.

A professional basketball player with size 19 feet has been crowned Britain's Tallest Man at a staggering 7ft 7ins. Paul Sturgess, who plays for the Harlem Globetrotters , already holds the record for the world's tallest basketball player and eats more than 7,000 calories a day to keep up with his regime.

The 29-year old, who is 231.8cm tall and weighs 24 and a half stone, became the tallest man in Britain after the death of Britain's previous tallest man, Neil Fingleton , in February.

Stephen Belafonte has filed his response to Mel B’s divorce petition. The Spice Girl, 41, filed for divorce late last month and Stephen has responded by asking for spousal support.

According to TMZ, Mel has asked the judge to deny her estranged husband support. Stephen has also reportedly asked her to pay his lawyer’s fees. Their separation date has also been disputed - Mel listed it as December 28 while Stephen claims it was March 1.

With N429K Gone, MMM Investors Drag Promoters To Court

Two middle-aged persons, Debora Fojo and Musa Garba, on Friday appeared before a Malumfashi Chief Magistrates’ Court in Katsina State for alleged breach of trust and cheating.

The two were accused of collecting N429,000 to invest in an online business called MMM.

МММ was a Russian company that perpetrated one of the world’s largest Ponzi schemes of all time, in the 1990s. By different estimates, from five to 40 million people, Nigerians inclusive, lost up to $10bn.

Fojo and Garba are residents of Government Girls Secondary School Malumfashi Quarters and Unguwar Danyawa village in Kafur local government areas respectively.

Prostitutes Steal From Brothel Owner, Kills Him Afterwards (Photo)

A brothel owner, Olayode Samuel, has been killed by some persons suspected to be prostitutes after dispossessing him of his pension.

The attack took place in Odo Owa community in Ijero Local Government Area in Ekiti state.

An eye witness said the robbers tied the retired soldier to a steel bed and set him on fire in the attack.

But preliminary findings by the police indicated that the victim was attacked by the prostitutes who he gave out some of his rooms to for their business.

Liberia’s Drug Enforcement Agency Arrests 6 Nigerians For Selling Drugs In Liberia (Photo)

Liberia’s Drug Enforcement Agency says it has arrested six Nigerians in possession of 1.528 grams of cocaine and heroin. The DEA told reporters on Thursday, 6th of April that the suspects were engaged in selling of dangerous narcotic substances.

The arrested Nigerians include 29 year-old Sunday Moses from the Redlight Community; 30 year-old IkoNso; 28 year-old UzaaKamara and 37 year-old Victor Kamara, all from Caldwell. The other suspects include 35 year-old Prince Ken and 26 year-old Anthony Enechi from the Paynesville Community.

DEA’s Chief of Operation Mr. JohntorWolo told reporters at the agency’s office in Fiamah, Sinkor that his officers carried out the arrest after being hinted by a whistleblower on the suspects’ alleged activities.

Mortar Attack Kills 3 Civilians In Somalia

A police officer says three civilians have been killed in a mortar attack in Somalia's capital. Capt. Mohamed Hussein said  at least two mortars slammed into a residential area in Wadajir district.

 The area is near the heavily guarded Mogadishu airport, which has seen mortar attacks by extremists in the past. There is no immediate claim of responsibility for the latest attack. It comes a day after President Mohamed Abdullahi Mohamed ordered a new offensive against the al-Shabab extremist group while offering the extremists a 60-day amnesty to surrender.

The al-Qaida-linked al-Shabab has stepped up attacks across the Somali capital in recent weeks.

Eight-Year-Old Girl Found Living With Monkeys

Cops in Uttar Pradesh have found a girl who can neither speak nor behave like normal human beings. The 8-year-old girl was rescued by the police in Bahraich from a troop of monkeys.

The girl was spotted by sub-inspector Suresh Yadav, who was on a routine patrol in Motipur range of Katarniaghat Wildlife Sanctuary.

When he tried to rescue the girl, who seemed to be comfortable with the apes, they screeched at him and so did the girl. However, the cops after great efforts managed to rescue the girl and got her admitted to the district hospital. The girl can neither speak nor understands any language, and gets scared at the sight of human beings. The doctors treating her said that she often gets violent.

Corps Member Dies In Sokoto

A Corps member, Anthony Ochai, from Benue State, has died of heart failure in Sokoto, the State NYSC Coordinator, Alhaji Musa Abubakar, has said. Abubakar made the disclosure in Sokoto on Friday, during the passing out ceremony of 1,411 corps members deployed to the state under the 2016 batch ”A”, Stream One.

He said:” The late corps member was serving at the Government Secondary School, Tsamaye, Sabon-Birni Local Government in the state. ”

 The deceased was resting after a football match between the various batches of the scheme, suddenly he just collapsed and died. ” His remains were brought to the Usmanu Danfodiyo University Teaching Hospital, Sokoto and it was confirmed that he died of heart failure.”

Police:Truck Drives Into Crowd In Stockholm, People Injured

A number of people have been injured after a truck was driven into pedestrians on a street in Stockholm.
