Kukah Warns Nigerian Govt. To Govern Well To ‘Avoid Military Coups’

The Catholic Bishop of Sokoto Arch-Diocese, Mathew Kukah, has warned political leaders to govern well in order to avert any temptation by military to take over governance via coups.

The Bishop was speaking at a press briefing organised by the Kukah center, as part of a public lecture with theme: “How to make democracy work for Africa,” in Abuja on Friday.

Mr. Kukah lamented the worsening state of the country from poor leadership. He added that Nigeria has only survived the democratic dispensation because of the confidence reposed on the system by the military.

Mr. Kukah commended the efforts of the military in ensuring almost two decades of democracy and added that political leaders ‘should not take the patience of the military for granted’.

Osun Dispels Speculations Of Lassa Fever Outbreak

The Osun Government on Saturday dispelled speculations of outbreak of Lassa fever in the state.

Mr Sola Fasure, media aide to Gov. Rauf Aregbesola, said in a statement issued in Osogbo that a patient who died at the Obafemi Awolowo University Teaching Hospital, Ile-Ife, as a result of the fever, was not from the state.

“A patient from Ore, in Ondo State, with symptoms of lassa fever, went to Seventh Day Adventist Hospital in Ile-Ife, for treatment, and was immediately transferred to OAUTH, where he regrettably died due to the advanced nature of the sickness.

” We must note however that the victim was not a native of Osun, and did not contact lassa fever in the state”, he said.

Nigerian Stabs Two Friends To Death In South Africa

The Nigerian Community in South Africa has confirmed that two members were killed by a fellow Nigerian early on Saturday.

Mr Emeka Ezinteje, Secretary of the Nigerian Union in South Africa, told the News Agency of Nigeria on the telephone from Johannesburg, South Africa, that the incident was due to a business dispute.

Ezinteje said,“ We have received a report that at 3.00am on Saturday, Mr Ekweghiariri Chidi Isaac, 34, a native of Ehime in Isiala Mbano Local Government of Imo and Mr Nzechukwu Alabuche, 35, from Azia in Anambra were stabbed to death by one Sunday from Awgbu in Anambra.

Italian Man Held After Driving Through City Shooting At Black People

The shootings happened just days after a Nigerian migrant was arrested in connection with the death of an 18-year-old Italian woman, whose dismembered body was discovered stuffed into two suitcases near Macerata.

Police named the suspected shooter as Luca Traini, 28, and said he had an Italian flag draped over his shoulders when he was seized in the street by armed police. Onlookers said he made a fascist salute before being handcuffed.

“He drove around in his car and when he saw any black people he shot them,” Marcello Mancini, a Macerata resident, told Reuters television. Police said one of the six victims was seriously hurt and needed surgery, but gave no further details.

Princess Eugenie's Wedding Date Revealed

A date has been set for the wedding of Princess Eugenie and Jack Brooksbank later this year. The wedding will take place on October 12, in St George's Chapel at Windsor Castle, according to the Duke of York's official Twitter account.

The father of the 27-year-old princess yesterday tweeted: 'The marriage of Her Royal Highness Princess Eugenie to Mr Jack Brooksbank will take place on 12th October 2018.

'As previously announced, the wedding will take place at St. George’s Chapel, Windsor Castle.'

The date of the wedding falls on a Friday, breaking with royal tradition of holding marriage ceremonies on the weekend.

Lagos State Government Arrests Three Students For Smoking Hemp & Using Codeine

Three students of Atunrashe High School, Mushin, were yesterday arrested by the Lagos State Government for smoking and being in possession of Indian hemp and substance known as codeine.

The pupils were nabbed by officials of Lagos State Neighbourhood and Safety Corps (LNSC). LNSC officials found the three under-aged boys smoking Indian hemp and using codeine in Surulere, and were later traced to their school.

The state Commissioner for Youth and Social Development, Mr Agboola Dabiri, who reacted to the development, said the state government would not condone any illegality.

Buhari, APC Deserves Second Term – Obahiagbon

Former Member of the House of Representatives, Patrick Obahiagbon has joined voices with those calling for President Muhammadu Buhari’s second term noting that the All Progressives Congress (APC)-led administration has performed well enough to deserve a second term.

IGP Blames Benue, Taraba Anti-Open Grazing Law For Crisis

Inspector General of Police, Ibrahim Idris, yesterday identified the controversial anti-open grazing laws in Benue and Taraba states as the source of the unending crisis in the two middle belt states.

The police boss told the Senate joint Committee on Police Affairs and National Intelligence that the enactment of the laws against the opposition of herdsmen was responsible for the problem in the states.

Idris appeared before the joint committee in camera following the directive of the Senate in plenary that he should be summoned to explain why he failed to comply with the mandate of the upper chamber to apprehend perpetrators of the January 1st mayhem in Benue state.

Royal Battle? Oluwo Of Iwo Accuses Ooni Of Sending His Guard To Push Him At An Event

The Oluwo of Iwo, Oba Adewale Akanbi, has alleged that the Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi, ordered his bodyguard to push him out of the way during the meeting of traditional rulers in the country held in Port Harcourt, the Rivers State capital.

Oba Akanbi made the allegation in a statement, a copy of which was made available to Punch correspondent in Osogbo on Friday.

About 90 Migrants Feared Dead After Boat Capsizes Near Libya

At least 90 people were feared dead yesterday in the latest migrant tragedy in the Mediterranean Sea off the coast of Libya, the UN migration agency said.

“At least 90 migrants are reported to have drowned, when a boat capsized off the coast of Libya this morning”, the International Organization for Migration said in a statement.

It added that “10 bodies are reported to have washed up on Libyan shores”, including two Libyan nationals and eight Pakistanis.

Two survivors from the disaster had swum to shore, while another was rescued by a fishing boat.

FG Renames University After Alex Ekwueme

The Nigerian government has renamed the Federal University, Ndufu-Ikwo in Ebonyi State after the late former Vice President, Alex Ekwueme.

Vice President Yemi Osinbajo announced the renaming on Friday at Oko, Anambra State during the burial of Mr. Ekwueme, who was Vice President of Nigeria between 1979 and 1983.

Mr. Osinbajo said the renaming had already been approved by President Muhammadu Buhari, who had said Mr. Ekwueme was being honoured for his contributions to national development.

Bayelsa To Fight Crimes With Drones

Bayelsa state government has said it would launch a drone crime control system and a social park to fight criminality in the state.

Speaking at the ongoing inter-ministerial briefings in Yenagoa, the state capital, state Commissioner for Science and Technology, Chief Blessing Ipigansi-Igbagara, said the anti-crime drones were developed by an indigenous manpower and technology system.

He said the development was in line with the present administration’s zero tolerance for crime and criminality.

Importing Sex Dolls Into Botswana Now An Offence

Botswana lawmakers have placed an embargo on the importation of sex dolls for men.

This is as contained in a section of their law that disavows men from copulating with sex dolls.

According to Section 178 of the Botswana Penal Code, bringing sex toys in Botswana is an offence.

The law further abolishes the right to “possess, lend, trade in, export, import, and or exhibit obscene objects or any objects tending to corrupt morals in Botswana,” which includes sex dolls.

Obasanjo Not Among Buhari’s Advisers - Oshiomhole

The former Governor of Edo State, Adams Oshiomhole, on Friday added his voice to those criticising former President Olusegun Obasanjo over his letter to President Muhammadu Buhari.

Obasanjo, apart from faulting the Buhari’s administration, also advised him not to seek re-election in 2019.

But speaking with State House correspondents after meeting with President Buhari, Oshiomhole said Obasanjo is not one of Buhari’s advisers.

He recalled that when Obasanjo was the President of the country he declared that he was at liberty to listen or not to listen to his advisers.

Ladoke Akintola University of Technology (LAUTECH), Ogbomoso has been ranked the best state university in Nigeria.

A statement by the institution’s Head of Public Affairs, Mr Lekan Fadeji, said the latest ranking by Webometric, which puts the Institution as 14th overall in the country and 3680 in the World, goes to confirm that despite the debilitating effect of the industrial crisis, LAUTECH’s leadership position among its peers remains unchallenged.

Elections May Not Hold In Benue In 2019- Bafarawa

A former governor of Sokoto state, Alhaji Attahiru Bafarawa, on Friday expressed fears that the 2019 elections may be stalled unless the Federal Government quickly finds an enduring solution to the persistent killings in Benue State.

The ex-governor stated this during a condolence visit to Benue State Governor, Samuel Ortom, on the recent mayhem in the state.

He said there can be no election in a state of uncertainty and unrest.

Kanye West and Solange Knowles must now answer a lawsuit claiming their songs were a ripoff of a song called "If We Can't Be Lovers."

Leroy Mitchell, also known as Prince Phillip Mitchell, wrote "If We Can't Be Lovers" in 1970. He claims Solange's song, "F*** the Industry" and Kanye's song, "Everything I Am" both extensively sample his work without his permission.

Chuck Norris Sues CBS & Sony For $30m

Chuck Norris, who appeared in "Walker, Texas Ranger," now claims he's getting screwed out of some serious profits from the shows video-on-demand money.

Chuck's company, Top Kick Productions, is going after CBS and Sony Pictures for allegedly cheating him out of his share of the streaming VOD revenue ... according to new legal docs. The issue revolves around an alleged 23 percent cut of profits CBS agreed to give Chuck in 1993, which he claims he hasn't received from the on-demand revenue.

According to the suit ... CBS and Sony have conspired to promote 'Walker' more through on-demand services and less on TV and DVD to avoid paying him his share, and he hasn't seen a dime of his profits from S-VOD since 2004.

Chuck's company is suing for breach of contract and shady dealing and wants at least $30 mil to make it right.

Newly Released Ibori Wants Nigerians To Vote In Right Leaders In 2019

A former Governor of Delta, James Ibori, has urged Nigerians to take the ongoing Continuous Voter Registration seriously to enable them to vote in the right candidates during elections.

Mr. Ibori, who is also the publisher of The Independent Newspapers Ltd., said this at the company’s Annual Thanksgiving service held at its premises in Lagos.

He said that massive participation of the electorate in the exercise as well as voting their choice of leaders was the only way they could effect good leadership.

“You should hold your leaders accountable by going to register, and vote in the right leaders. You should know that your vote counts; times are changing, your voter card is your strength,” he said.

El-Rufai Increases Teachers’ Salaries By 32.5%

Kaduna State Government says it has increased the salary of public school teachers by 32.5 per cent.

The State Commissioner for Education, Science, and Technology, Ja’afaru Sani, told reporters at his office on Thursday that the increment was part of ongoing reforms in the education sector.

He explained that 27.5 per cent would be added to all teachers’ salary while the other five per cent would serve as an incentive for teachers posted to rural areas.

Mr Sani noted that the increase in the salaries of teachers has placed them above other civil servants in the state, and it was aimed at attracting the best hands to the teaching profession.

Diego Maradona claims he had been refused a visa to enter the US because he insulted Donald Trump on TV.

The footballing legend is currently managing Al Fujairah, a club based in the Arab Emirates.

But he needed to visit Miami for a court case involving his ex-wife Claudia Villafañe.

Maradona was first kicked out of the US after he was caught taking drugs during the 1994 World Cup. Now he's been denied a visa by US authorities once again.

Photos: Police Rescue 9-Year Old Girl From Kidnappers In Kaduna

Police have rescued a nine-year-old girl, who was kidnapped on January 19, by a gang of five kidnappers in Anguwa Bala village in Kaduna State.

The suspects were arrested while demanding N500,000 ransom after kidnapping Hadiza Husseini.

Force Public Relations Officer, Jimoh Moshood, in a statement, said the victim was rescued without payment of any ransom.

“The suspects, during interrogation, confessed to the crime and admitted to the various criminal roles they played in the commission of the offence,“ he added.

A fake Military Officer, Seaman Okonkwo Ebuka Emmanuel and two others, Ugochukwu Eludi and Chuks Ogbonna have been arrested by police officers in Delta State for stealing a Honda Crosstour car.

Dressed in military uniform Okonkwo and others were nabbed at Ogwashi-Uku/Ibusa expressway, Delta State.

According to the PPRO of the Delta State Command, the suspects were heading from Kwale to Asaba on the 30th of January, 2018, when they were intercepted by the Dragon Patrol Team 21, led by officer Imonikhe Imo.

He said that questions put to the suspects with regards to ownership of the vehicle could not be answered, prompting the officers to search the vehicle where they discovered a wrap of Indian Hemp, two phones and the vehicle particulars which indicates it wasn't theirs.

CBN To Get New Deputy Governor As Buhari Nominates Adamu

President Muhamamdu Buhari has nominated Mr. Edward Adamu, for appointment as the deputy governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria.

Adamu from Gombe State, replaces Mr. Sulaiman Barau, from Zaria, Kaduna State, who retired in December, 2017.

A statement on Thursday by the Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, Mr. Femi Adesina, said a letter had since been sent to the Senate seeking Adamu’s confirmation.

Man Cuts Off Cousin's Manhood

A man, Aliyu Mohammed, has cut off the manhood of his 12-year-old cousin, Farouk Ibrahim, for unknown reasons.

The incident happened in the Babana area of the Borgu Local Government Area of Niger State.

It was learnt that Ibrahim was on his way to the farm to deliver food to his siblings, when Mohammed pounced on him.

Mohammed, it was learnt, strangled Ibrahim and cut off his penis after the latter had become unconscious.

The Samuel Ilorin Magistrate’s Court, Ogba, has sentenced no fewer than 33 Lagos residents to different terms of imprisonment and community service for violating the state Environmental Sanitation Laws 2017.

The offenders were said to have been apprehended by operatives of the Lagos State Environmental Sanitation Corps (LAGESC) on Tuesday, January 30, 2018.

They were reportedly apprehended at Ikeja, Iyana-Ipaja, Mushin and Iyana-Isolo areas, among others, for illegal street trading, indiscriminate dumping of refuse and illegal crossing of the highways.

The Magistrate, Ogundare Olayiwola, was said to have sentenced each of the accused on one count of indiscriminate dumping of refuse to five months’ imprisonment, with an option of N20,000 fine.

Buhari’s $1bn Request Divides Reps

Plenary of House of Representatives on Thursday was rowdy as members disagreed over the propriety of the one billion dollars sought by President Muhammadu Buhari to fight Boko Haram insurgency.

The confusion followed a motion by Rep. Ken Chikere (Rivers-PDP) on the “Need to deduct 13 per cent Derivation from the one billion dollars approved by the National Economic Council (NEC) to fight Boko Haram Insurgency”.

Moving the motion, Chikere said that if 13 per cent derivation was not deducted from the one billion dollars and paid to oil-producing states, it would amount to double contribution by the states.

Taraba State Has Received A Notice Of Attack, Governor Cries Out

Governor Darius Ishaku of Taraba State yesterday disclosed he has received a letter by suspected insurgents that the state would be attacked within ten days.

Ishaku spoke when the National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Prince Uche Secondus, visited to offer condolences over the killings in the state.
 “We are on notice that in 10 days, we (Taraba) shall be attacked. I have alerted all security agencies. We are waiting.

“A helicopter has dropped arms and ammunitions in the night without its mission established. It is not a time to keep quiet; we are living in fear,” he added.

A newborn baby girl was recovered on Thursday morning from a gutter at Funmilayo Bus Stop, Orile Agege, Lagos.

A rights activist, Declan Ihekaire, said he found the crying baby wrapped in a sack inside the dirty water at 5:30 a.m.

Ihekaire, a resident of the area, said he quickly called the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) of Elere Police Station, Mrs. Regina, and the Lagos State emergency response number 112.

He told The Nation that it was the DPO that rushed to the scene and facilitated the baby’s transfer to the Orile Agege General Hospital.

Imo Govt Would Revoke Titles To All Unused Lands

Imo State governor, Rochas Okorocha, said today that the state government would revoke titles to all unused lands. He said government would give priority to the Industrial layouts where people acquired lands and kept them for years without developing it, while waiting to sell them at very exorbitant prices.

The governor stated these when members of the Owerri Chamber of Commerce, Industry, Mines and Agriculture visited him at the Government House in Owerri.

Okorocha also said his administration would reactivate all the moribund manufacturing companies in the state whether public or private owned, adding that the administration is taking stock of all the companies involved.

Benue Govt. Increases Ransom On Notorious Criminal From N10m To N50m

The Benue Government has increased the ransom it pledged to give anyone with useful information that could lead to the arrest of Mr Terwase Akwaza, alias Ghana, from N10 million to N50 million.

The Commissioner for Information, Mr Lawrence Onoja, disclosed this on Thursday in Makurdi after the State Security Council meeting.

Onoja said that the increment in the ransom was due largely to renewed criminal activities allegedly perpetrated by the wanted suspect and his cohorts in Sankera axis of the state.

He said that emergency lines would be made public in no distant time to enable the public to supply information concerning him to security agencies.

Mechanic To Receive Six Lashes For Trespass

A Karmo Grade 1 Area Court, Abuja, on Thursday ordered that a mechanic, Friday Monday, 25, convicted for criminal trespass into a clinic, be given six strokes of the cane.

Monday of Angwan Shahu, Karmo, Abuja, was arraigned on a two-count charge of criminal trespass and attempt to commit offence, offences he admitted committing.

The judge, Abubakar Sadiq, said the punishment would have been more severe if the convict had not pleaded guilty and begged for leniency.

Earlier, the prosecutor, Mrs Florence Auhioboh, had told the court that one Mike Bako of Hulumi village, Karmo, reported the matter at the Karmo Police Station, Abuja, on Jan. 30.

Suspected Herdsmen Kill 9 In Kaduna Last Night

Unknown gunmen suspected to be Fulani herdsmen on Wednesday night killed nine persons in a  rural community in Kaduna.

The incident occurred at Kaguru village in Birnin Gwari local government area.

A local who escaped the attack told SaharaReporters on the telephone that the gunmen came in several vehicles chanting religious slogans when they carried out the act.

He also said they burnt down several houses in the village.

S R Sreejith, who has been on strike in front of the secretariat chief minister’s office in Thiruvananthapuram, ended his protest on Wednesday after being told the CBI has kicked off a probe into the death of his brother, S R Sreejeev.

Sreejeev was found dead on May 21, 2014.

FFK Denies Suffering From A Heart Disease

Police Allegedly Torture Lotto Operator To Death

Tragedy struck in Oke-Afa community, Ojo Local Government Area of Lagos State yesterday, when a 43-year-old man was allegedly tortured to death by policemen attached to Okokomaiko Police Station.

The deceased, identified as Bukola Adeogun, was arrested along with over 30 residents of the community by the policemen at about 10p.m., Tuesday night, during an alleged raid of criminal hideouts.

Bukola Adeogun Vanguard gathered that Bukola, who operates a lotto kiosk located at the entrance of his 23 Oke-Afa Street residence, was allegedly arrested while leaving the kiosk for his apartment.

It was learned that aside Bukola, the 29 other residents arrested during the raid were allegedly detained while in shorts. Bukola, a father of four including a two-month-old baby, was said to have been allegedly tortured during interrogation.
