Lagos declares free bus ride on January 1

In order to reduce traffic congestion and road crashes associated with drunkenness prevalent during festive periods, Lagos Governor, Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu has declared free bus ride for commuters in Lagos on New Year’s Day.

The two bus operators – Primero Transport Services Limited and Lagos Bus Services Limited – will offer free bus services on their allotted routes.

The Governor’s gesture is to aid the mobility of the people on New Year’s Day as well as encourage those who own vehicles to use public transport rather than put their vehicles on the road.

Fire razes popular ‘Kara’ Market on New Year’s eve

A section of the popular cattle market also known as Kara close to the Berger Garage along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway was gutted by fire today.

No less than 40 shops, five storage facilities, 20 residential rooms and cash, all worth millions were lost to the inferno.

The goods in the shops and storage facilities include provisions , animal feeds and food items.

Some of the operators at the market speaking to NAN expressed thanks to God that no life was lost from what they described as a ‘ mysterious’ fire.

‘Mentally-challenged’ woman caught strangling infant in Delta church

A woman, suspected to be mentally unstable, was reportedly caught strangling her infant in the premises of  a popular Pentecostal church in Effurun, Delta state.

According to reports, the innocent baby said to be a few months old, survived the attack.

It was further gathered that the unstable woman may have sought to get the attention of the church authorities to assist her financially.

However, she is currently cooling her heels in police custody.

The state Commissioner of Police, Mr. Adeyinka Adeleke, confirmed the incident, adding that she is now in the custody of the police. “Yes, it is true. But the woman is not mentally stable,” Adeleke stated.

EFCC confirms Shehu Sani’s arrest

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission has confirmed the arrest of the former senator representing Kaduna Central, Shehu Sani.

“He is now being quizzed in our Jabi headquarters in Abuja”, the source told P.M. News.

According to the source, Sani collected money from the chairman and CEO of ASD Motors, his name sake Sani Dauda, under the pretence of passing it as bribe to EFCC boss, Ibrahim Magu.

Sani Dauda was a former chairman of Peugeot Automobile Nigeria Limited(PAN). His ASD Motors is a major car dealer in Abuja.

Police take over Saraki’s ancestral home

Policemen have surrounded a property belonging to the family of the former Senate President, Dr Bukola Saraki in Ilorin, the Kwara State capital.

The property has in recent days been a subject of controversy between the former Senate President and the current Kwara State Government.

Prior to this development, the state House of Assembly had deliberated on a petition against the ownership of the expanse of land which was reportedly not paid for, prompting the call for the executive to take over the property.

The matter has also triggered political arguments between the leadership of the Peoples Democratic Party in Kwara State and the state government.

Akin Alabi lists out his New Year's resolution

The lawmaker is starting the year on a very good note. He just tweeted he won’t be taking alcohol, soda, and tobacco in the month of January. Mr Akin didn’t say it will be all through the year, but intends to make January lit like that.

Jigawa House of Reps member dies in Dubai

A House of Representatives member, representing Garki/Babura Federal constituency in Jigawa state, Dr Muhammadu Adamu Fagengawo has reportedly died.

A source who confirmed this to Channels Television said that Dr Adamu was pronounced dead in Dubai in a hospital where he had been receiving treatment.

This is after two other lawmakers died in December; Senator representing Imo North Senatorial District in the National Assembly, Senator Ben Uwajumogu and a member of the House of Representatives who represented Rijau/Magama Federal Constituency of Niger State, Honourable Jafaru Illiyasu Auna.

Both lawmakers died in Abuja after brief illnesses. Dr Adamu has been a member of the House of Representatives since 2015.

EFCC picks up former Senator, Shehu Sani

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has arrested Sen. Shehu Sani, who represented Kaduna Central Senatorial District in the National Assembly between 2015 and 2019.

According to a source, Sani was arrested for alleged extortion of $20,000 from the owner of ASD Motors, The Nation reports.

The source said: “He was said to have collected the $20,000 from the owner of ASD Motors on the grounds that he is very close to the EFCC boss.

“He was subsequently arrested and granted administrative bail while he refunded the money to the victim.He was asked to report but made himself incommunicado. He must have been scamming a lot of people, dropping the name of the EFCC boss.” More details later.

Kidnappers kill 6 teenage abductees after their demands for ransom were denied

Kidnappers have murdered six teenagers in Ethiopia after their demands for ransom were denied.

The six victims were buried on Tuesday, a state-owned Amharic regional broadcaster said.

Shortly before Christmas eight youths aged from 10 to 16 had been abducted in the region of Gondar.

One teenager was able to escape, another was severely injured and is hospitalised.

The kidnappers had demanded a ransom payment of 120,000 Birr (3,760 dollars).

American man arrested for shooting his school principal wife dead along with her dog and cat

A man has been accused of shooting dead his wife, her therapy dog and their cat at the home they shared.

Kevin Heimsoth's school principal wife, Lynn, 58, was found dead by police in Bellingham, Washington, US on Thursday morning, along with the her beloved golden retriever Sukha.

After finding Lynn’s body they discovered her injured husband, 56,  “who was in the apartment [and] appeared to have sustained a self-inflicted gunshot wound",  the Bellingham Herald reported.

Heimsoth was taken to hospital where he remains in a critical condition.

Nigerian prisoner jailed in China hid plea for help in Christmas cards as he claims they were being forced to work in prison against their wish

A Nigerian prisoner who wrote a chilling plea on a Tesco Christmas card from inside a Chinese jail has said he and a fellow inmate wrote similar messages in 10 boxes of cards.

The man, named only as Antoine, who got out the prison two months ago after a four-year stretch for alleged contract fraud, heard one of his notes had been found after he returned home.

The message said it was from foreign residents in Shanghai's Qingpu prison and claimed detainees were forced to work 'against our will'.

Jigawa local government bans men and women from meeting at night

The Kirikasamma Local Government Area of Jigawa State, on Monday, enacted a bye-law banning members of the opposite sex from meeting at night.

The local government said this was due to rampant cases of out of wedlock pregnancy among girls.

The local government information officer, Sanusi Doro, said the council chairman, Salisu Kubayo, signed the law after ten councilors of the local government area unanimously agreed to it during a council meeting.

According to the new law, henceforth, members of the opposite sex (even lovers) found violating the law would be sentenced to six months in prison with an option of N50,000 fine.

Kano suspends law banning opposite sexes from plying same tricycles

The Kano State Government has suspended the implementation of a directive banning persons of opposite genders from plying same commercial tricycles across the state from January 2020.

The spokesperson of the agency responsible for implementing the law, Kano Hisbah Board, Lawan Fagge, disclosed this today.

The policy, in recent days, had attracted condemnation from Nigerians, especially on social media.

The official said the decision was taken on Monday after consultation with the leadership of commercial tricycle operators “who pleaded for an extension of the implementation date.”

“The law has been suspended till further notice. The decision was taken after consultation with leadership of commercial tricycle operators who pleaded for extending the implementation date,” Mr Fagge said.

A brave tenant has moved into a house said to be haunted after a family of 11 were found hanged inside.

Nine members of the Chundawat family were found hanging from an iron grill in the hall with pieces of cloth over their eyes at the property in Deli, India.

A woman who appeared to be in her sixties was found blindfolded and hanging from a door frame, while the body of another woman in her eighties was discovered on the hall floor, reports The Indian Express.

Bizarre notes about a mysterious ritual were found alongside the dead family, police said.

Monty Python star Neil Innes dies aged 75

Neil Innes, the English writer, comedian and musician - dubbed "The Seventh Python" - has died aged 75.

He was best known for his work with the Bonzo Dog Doo-Dah Band, The Rutles and collaborating with Monty Python.

A spokesperson for the Innes family said he had not been suffering from any illness and had passed away unexpectedly on Sunday night.

Python founding member Sir Michael Palin described him as "a great writer" and "the most lovely friend".

"He was the first Neil Innes really!" Sir Michael told Radio 4's PM programme. "We were very lucky to have him on board."

Nigerian artistes, Grammy nominee Burna Boy and Mavin Records new sensation Rema have made former US President Barack Obama’s list of ‘Favourite Music of 2019’.

Sixth on the 35-song list is Burna Boy’s Anybody and 26th is Rema’s Iron Man.

In listing his favourite songs for this year, Obama is continuing an annual tradition. He had earlier released his favourite books and movies for the year and a short list of TV shows that he enjoyed.

The self-acclaimed pastor of the Cherubim and Seraphim Church, Solution Chapel, Ikoyi-Ile, Osun State, Segun Philips, said he was paid N210,000 to use the final year student of the Lagos State University, Favour Daley-Oladele for money rituals.

25-year old Texas based Nigerian man arrested for stabbing his 30-year old pregnant sister to death

A former University of Texas at San Antonio football player has been arrested and charged in the fatal stabbing of his sister at a home north of Austin.

The Travis County sheriff´s office says 25-year-old Michael Egwuagu who is originally from Nigeria was charged with murder in the Friday killing of his sister, 30, in Pflugerville.

The sheriff´s office has not yet released the name of his sister, who authorities say was stabbed multiple times. She died at the scene.

Sheriff's office spokeswoman Kristen Dark says authorities were told the victim was pregnant but they are waiting on an autopsy to confirm that.

Odunlade Adekola’s ‘The Vendor’ makes it to Netflix

‘The Vendor’ a 2018 production from popular Yoruba actor, Odunlade Adekola has started streaming on global streaming platform, Netflix.

The film, which features Adunni Ade, Odunlade Adekola and Jide Kosoko was first released in 2018 in cinemas under FilmOne Distribution.

The addition of ‘The Vendor,’ to Netflix joins the expanding roster of Nollywood content on the global streaming platform.

Written, produced and directed by Odunlade Adekola, the comedy tells the story of a vendor, whose luck changes after meeting a rich young lady.

Adekola plays the lead male role of the vendor while Adunni Ade plays the role of the lead actress.

Nigerian jailed for presenting false documents at US embassy (pictured)

A Nigerian Visa Applicant, Lukman Owolabi Ogunsuada, 38, has been sentenced to jail for presenting forged letter of invitation to the officials at the United States Embassy in Lagos to secure B1 and B2 Visa categories.

The convict was jailed by Chief Magistrate N. A Layeni of Apapa Magistrates Court after he found him guilty of the two count charges of forgery preferred against him by the police at the special fraud unit, PSFU, Ikoyi, Lagos during the trial spanning about three years.

Magistrate Layeni sentenced the convict in count one of the charge to one year imprisonment or alternatively to a fine of N100, 000 and 200 hours community service or to a fine of N20, 000 in count two of the charges.

Union Bank staff face trial for assaulting actress

The trial of members of staff of Union Bank, Plc, Lagos, Vivian Okoro, 36 and Femi Omomeji, 36 for allegedly assaulting and inflicting serious injuries on a Nollywood actress, Chioma Toplis, will commence on 11 January, 2020 at the Igbosere Chief Magistrate Court 8, Lagos.

The Defendants were earlier arraigned before the court in February 2019 on two-count charges bothering on assault occasioning bodily harm.

The defendants pleaded not guilty to the charges and their bail granted by Magistrate A.M Davies.

President Muhammadu Buhari, on Monday, hosted the Serving Overseer of the Latter Rain Assembly, Pastor Tunde Bakare, at the State House, Abuja.

Bakare, 64, from Ogun State, was Buhari’s running mate in the 2011 general election. On September 22, 2019, he declared that he would succeed Buhari as Nigeria’s next president.

Bakare had said: “Take it to the mountain top, if you have never heard it before, I am saying it to you this morning in the scheme of things, as far as politics of Nigeria is concerned, President Muhammadu Buhari is number 15, and I am number 16.”

However, no official reason was given for the meeting with the president today, and the cleric also did not speak to newsmen.

13 year-old girl dies giving birth 'to her dad's baby after years of sexual abuse' (photos)

A 13-year-old girl sexually abused by her father from the age of nine died while giving birth to his child just before Christmas, according to police.

Luana Ketlan was rushed to hospital suffering from severe abdominal pains before doctors realised she was seven months pregnant, police in Brazil have said.

She was also diagnosed with acute anaemia and delivered a premature baby boy, who survived, after her labour was induced.

However the teenager's health deteriorated after the birth and tests revealed she had a number of complications including low blood pressure, cirrhosis of the liver and water on the lungs.

Twin brothers who starred in My Big Fat Gypsy Wedding have died in a suspected suicide pact amid battles with cancer and depression, family have revealed.

The bodies of Bill and Joe Smith were found together in a tree off an isolated country lane in Sevenoaks, Kent, at about 11.30am on Saturday.

It has emerged Joe, a dad-of-two, had recently been diagnosed with cancer, which had come as a devastating blow for his brother Bill, who had told him: "I’d never be able to live without you."

The 32-year-old twins' uncle found their bodies in a woodland, where they had played as youngsters, after they disappeared and worried family members found a note.

Friends of the dads have claimed they were worried they wouldn't be back in time for the 2020 school term, which is set to begin next week.

President Buhari places travel restrictions on ministers, agency heads, others

President Muhammadu Buhari has placed travel restrictions on ministers, presidential aides, heads of agencies and other top officials of the government.

Announcing the restrictions at a press conference, Information and culture minister Lai Mohammed said all travelling by the government officials must be beneficial to the interest of the country, according to the president.

Mohammed said the travel restriction was part of Buhari’s cost-saving measures, particularly in the area of official travels under the new Yearly Travel Plans policy.

“Except with the express approval of Mr President, Ministers, Permanent Secretaries, Chairmen of Extra-Ministerial Departments, Chief Executive Officers and Directors are restricted to not more than two (2) foreign travels in a quarter,” Mohammed said.
