Bride under fire for expecting guests to pay £10,000 to attend lavish wedding

It's no secret that weddings can be expensive, but you don't normally expect to pay through the roof to attend one.

However one bride-to-be has planned a big day so extravagant that it's going to cost her guests an absolute fortune to be there.

In a post on Mumsnet, the unnamed sister of the bride revealed that the guests are expected to shell out roughly £10,000 per person in order to be part of the ceremony and reception - because the wedding is happening in the Caribbean.

She explained how she and her sister had never been particularly close and she just couldn't fathom spending that much money to attend the wedding with her partner.

Tragedy averted as Air Peace crash lands in Lagos

Tragedy was averted on Tuesday as Air Peace airline crash landed at the local wing of the Murtala Muhammed Airport, Lagos.

The airline was said to have crash landed on the runway, but no life was lost.

The aircraft was said to be coming from Port Harcourt, Rivers State when it had technical fault and had to crash land on the runway.

The Air peace Boeing 737 landing gear collapsed after dropping 30 ft shortly before landing at the Lagos Airport.

Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, Femi Adesina, has said “he can’t just get over” the death of a corps member, Precious Owolabi, a staff of Channels TV who died as a result of gunshot wounds during yesterday’s protest by Shi’ites members in Abuja.

In an interview on Channels TV today, he said he started just like Owolabi and couldn’t have imagined been killed on duty.

“I couldn’t get over it. I started my career as a journalist, 33 years ago as a youth corp member at the Lagos Television and that is what he is doing…exactly the way I started is the way he is starting and I just can’t get over it. Imagine that as a youth corp member at a television station 33 years ago, I’d been killed in the field of duty.

Shock, reactions as Ambode’s name missing on Buhari’s ministerial list

Shock and and bewilderment was on the faces of many on Tuesday as former Governor of Lagos State, Akinwunmi Ambode failed to make the ministerial list of President Muhammadu Buhari.

Buhari had earlier today released his ministerial list of 43 names to the Senate for ratification and approval.

Many had expected Ambode to be one of the names to from Lagos to be appointed minister, but he and his followers were disappointed as his name was conspicuously missing. Rather, former Governor of Lagos and Minister, Babatunde Fashola retains his seat while former Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Senator Olorunnimbe Mamora was the second name from Lagos.

Bride 'sells house to pay for perfect engagement ring' - but people mock design

A bride-to-be claims she and her fiancé sold their house so they could afford her "perfect" engagement ring - which has been mocked online.

The woman proudly posted a snap of the bling ring as it glistened on her finger.

She did not state how much the "custom design" cost, but boasted of it featuring a huge "purple diamond" in the shape of a flower and told people to "look it up".

Ex- beauty queen & blogger Dijana Milojkovic dies at 33

A former beauty queen and blogger who was diagnosed with womb cancer has died aged 33. Dijana Milojkovic, from Serbia, spent nearly six years battling the cancer after she was diagnosed at just 27-years-old.

Following her diagnosis, she started blogging about her journey and rapidly gained thousands of loyal supporters inspired by her positivity and perserverance. Last month, an urgent appeal was made for a blood donor as her health began to decline.

Despite managing to retrieve the blood, doctors were unable to save her and she died on July 22.

Her ex boyfriend Stefan Karic was her biggest supporter during her fight with cancer, cutting all of his hair and even getting a tattoo of her face on his body. Even though they split in 2017, Stefan stood by Dijana throughout her cancer battle.

ASAP Rocky's mother has revealed she "feels sick" with fear for her son as he remains in Swedish jail.

The Praise the Lord rapper was arrested on 3 July after he was allegedly involved in a street fight between two men and his security team, and has since prompted a nationwide campaign for his freedom that has even been backed by US President Donald Trump.

Now, his mother Renee Black has spoken out on his imprisonment, revealing her son is finding it hard behind bars.

"He was just telling me that he wasn't really eating properly, you know," she told Swedish newspaper Expressen . "He can't wait to get back into the gym."

DPR seals five filling stations in Edo

The Department of Petroleum Resources (DPR) in Edo State has sealed up five filling stations for under dispensation of fuel and other offences.

It also sealed up gas stations that were built without approval. Operations Controller Maynard Oriafoh, who led the team, also educated attendants on the use of fire extinguishers.

Petrol stations that were sealed included MRS Petrol Station on Mission Road; Petrol Vadez on New Lagos Road; St Talye Oil and Gas and Oando Petrol Station on Benin-Lagos road.

Oriafoh said the action was to ensure the public is not cheated. He added that owners of the sealed stations would pay necessary fines before their businesses were reopened.

Floyd Mayweather has become a special advisor for China's boxing team ahead of the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.

The Chinese Boxing Federation announced the appointment of the former five-division world champion in a post on their official account on Chinese social media platform WeChat. They said Mayweather has pledged to "go all-out to use his influence and resources to support the Chinese boxing project in achieving excellent results at the Tokyo Olympics".

Mayweather has not commented on the appointment whilst further details have not been given regarding his role.

It marks an intriguing transition for the legendary fighter, who retired from professional boxing with an undefeated 49-0 record in 2015.

WHO certifies new HIV treatment drug

The World Health Organisation (WHO) has certified Dolutegravir (DTG) as a safe and preferred first-line and second-line treatment drug for HIV/AIDS, adding that pregnant women can also use it.

In a statement posted on its official website on Monday, it said initial studies had flagged DTG as having a possible link with neural tube defects (birth defects of the brain and spinal cord that cause conditions such as spina bifida) in infants born to women using the drug at the time of conception.

Consequently, based on these preliminary findings, many countries had advised pregnant women and women of childbearing potential to take efavirenz (EFV) instead, the release said.

Panic in Edo Court as 65-year old man falls to death

There was panic among staff of the Edo State High Court as a 65-year old man identified as Moses Airhiagbonkpa fell to his death.

The incident disrupted activities at the court and staff left their offices to see the corpse. It was learnt that the deceased fell from the 10th floor of the High Court building.

The body of the victim was discovered when staff saw blood dripping down the empty lift and his feet dangling.

An official of the court who pleaded anonymity debunked the insinuation that the deceased was one of the workers engaged by the construction firm carrying out renovation of the court.

Boris Johnson wins race to be UK prime minister

Boris Johnson, one of the biggest voices in the Brexit movement, won the Conservative Party leadership race on Tuesday and will become the U.K.’s next prime minister.

Johnson, 55, was elected as his party leader, and consequently the U.K. leader, with 92,153 votes from members of the ruling Conservative Party. Foreign Minister Jeremy Hunt received 46,656 votes. Johnson will take up office on Wednesday.

President Donald Trump, who has publicly backed Johnson on several occasions during the leadership race, congratulated him via Twitter saying: “He will be great!”

Electrician, 51 remanded for defiling 8-year-old girl

A Chief Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday ordered that a 51-year-old electrician, Kasimu Abdul, who allegedly defiled an eight-year-girl, be remanded in prison, pending legal advice.

Magistrate Hajara Dauda, who did not take the plea of Abdul, ordered the police to send back the case file to the office of the State Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP).

“Because of the sensitivity of the case, it is difficult to grant bail. The case file should be duplicated and sent to the Office of the DPP for advice,” she said.

Dauda then adjourned the case until Aug. 7, for mention.

Amaechi, Aregbesola, Saraki , Keyamo others make Buhari’s ministerial list

President Muhammadu Buhari has finally forwarded the list of ministerial nominees to Senate for confirmation.

There are 43 nominees by the President. On the list announced by Senate President Ahmed Lawan are former ministers Babatunde Fashola, Rotimi Amaechi, Ogbonnaya Onu, Adamu Adamu(Bauchi), Senator Chris Ngige(Anambra).

Also on the list are former Governors Rauf Aregbesola(Osun) George Akume(Benue) Timipre Sylva(Bayelsa), Adeniyi Adebayo(Ekiti).

Some of the newcomers are Senator Godswill Akpabio(Akwa Ibom), Sunday Dare(Oyo), Festus Keyamo(Delta), Sharon Ikeazor(Anambra), Senator Tayo Alasoadura(Ondo), Senator Gbemisola Saraki (Kwara) and Olorunnibe Mamora(Lagos).  Lawan said screening of the nominees commences tomorrow.

No girls have been born for three months in 132 Indian villages amid fears of sex-selection

None of the 216 children born across 132 villages in one Indian state over the last three months were girls, authorities have revealed.

Officials in Uttarkashi, Uttarakhand state have launched a probe over fears parents have been having sex-selective abortions.

India outlawed sex-selective abortion in 1994, but it's still common practice to terminate female fetuses as they are seen as a financial burden, with families often needing to provide money for costly dowries, despite the fact they were outlawed in 1961.

Baby boys are favoured as they are seen as the main breadwinner and the birth of a son is seen as a cause for celebration and family pride.

The Avengers: Endgame actress recently got engaged to Saturday Night Live co-head writer Colin Jost after two years of dating. She finally showed off her engagement ring Saturday at the Marvel Studios Panel during the popular San Diego convention.

The 11-carat egg-shaped light brown diamond, which is believed to be the work of Taffin's James de Givenchy, is estimated to cost around $400,000, according to Page Six.

James Bond actor David Hedison dies aged 92

James Bond star David Hedison has died aged 92. The actor passed away with his daughters at his side in Los Angeles on Thursday, a representative for the family said.

Well known for his roles in the Bond franchise, David joined Roger Moore in the 1973 film Live and Let Die as well as Timothy Dalton in 1989 with License to Kill, becoming the first actor to play CIA agent Felix Leiter twice.

However, Jeffrey Wright, who took over the role in 2006’s Casino Royale, will return for Bond 25.

‘Even in our deep sadness, we are comforted by the memory of our wonderful father,’ his daughters Alexandra and Serena said in a statement this week.

Islamic TV station faces being stripped of its licence for saying gay people are worse than pigs

An Islamic TV station that said gay people are worse than pigs and magicians should be executed faces being stripped of its UK broadcasting licence.

Peace TV, based in Dubai, was found to have shown four programmes which breached Ofcom regulations on inciting crime, hate speech and abuse.

The channel, which is broadcast on Sky, said the programmes were based on Islamic teachings.

The regulator said one show - called Strengthening Your Family - The Valley of the Homosexuals - made reference to homosexual people dying 'from a disease they contracted because they are homosexual' and said homosexuality was 'a very unnatural type of love that is energised by the influence of (Satan)'.

Kenya's finance minister, Henry Rotich pleads not guilty to corruption charges

Kenya's Finance Minister Henry Rotich has pleaded not guilty to corruption charges, a day after his arrest over graft in a multi-million dollar project to build two massive dams.

Rotich appeared in an anti-corruption court in Kenya's capital, Nairobi, on Tuesday along with his deputy, Kamau Thugge.

Prosecutors charged him with multiple counts, including abuse of office, conspiracy to defraud the public, failure to comply with guidelines relating to procurement and committing an offence of financial misconduct, among others.

Rotich denied the charges.

His arrest on Monday marked the first time a sitting Kenyan government minister has been held on corruption charges.

Nyasa Big Bullets’ striker Hassan Kajoke was given a chicken for his exemplary performance in their 5-0 win over Karonge United TNM Super League match on Sunday at Kamuzu Stadium.

Kajoke scored a brace and helped his side run over Karonge United in the Malawian league clash.

The award had been earlier said was given by a sponsor. But when the photo attracted a lot of comments on social media the Malawian league website came out to say, the chicken was given to Kajoke by a fan who was impressed by his performance in the match.

US actress Arrested on Cocaine Possession Charge

The Wire star Sonja Sohn has been arrested for drug possession.

It’s been reported that the actor, who played Shakima ”Kima” Greggs in the HBO series, was arrested in North Carolina on Sunday for possession of cocaine, marijuana and drug paraphernalia.

According to TMZ, the marijuana and paraphernalia charges will be booked as misdemeanours but the cocaine charge could be a felony.

Sohn is said to have posted bail set at $1,500 and authorities say she’ll be arraigned on Tuesday.

The actor’s most recent role is Laverne on US series The Chi, which was created by Master of None star Lena Waithe.

Embassy to send five IDPs to US for sport programme

The US Embassy in Nigeria said it would send five Nigerian Football talents, who are Internally Displaced Persons to the US to participate in a State Department-sponsored Sports Visitor programme.

The embassy, which disclosed this in a statement on Monday, said that the programme would hold from August 1 to August 19.

According to the embassy, the five participants, made up of three males and two females, were selected from IDP camps in Benue State and Abuja.

It added that the participants would attend the programme with their chaperones.

'Selfish' groom gets so drunk on wedding day he passes out leaving wife in tears

The woman, writing on Mumsnet, revealed she is still struggling to forgive him six weeks later.

She said he spent most of the day with his friends getting drunk. Then as they were whisked away from their special day the groom had to stick his head out the window of a taxi the entire journey as he felt ill.

40,000 more flee Cameroon conflict to Nigeria - UN

The United Nations on Monday said nearly 40,000 more people had been forced to flee to Nigeria by worsening humanitarian situation in north-west and south-west regions of Cameroon.

Briefing UN correspondents in New York on Monday, a spokesman of the organisation, Mr Farhan Haq, said 530,000 others had been internally displaced.

No fewer than 1.3 million people are now in need of assistance, Haq said, adding that the situation “continues to be characterised by human rights and protection abuses and violations”.

The conflict started in 2016 when separatists launched an armed struggle for a breakaway state they call Ambazonia.

Alleged assault: Court fixes August 20 for Abbo’s trial

A Zuba Chief Magistrates’ Court Abuja, on Monday, fixed August 20, for the trial of Senator Elisha Abbo who allegedly assaulted a nursing woman in Abuja.

The offence that bordered on criminal force and assault which is contrary to section 263 and 264 of the penal code.

The Magistrate, Abdullahi Ilelah, also ordered the prosecution counsel, to supply the defendant’s counsel with all the materials he intends to rely on to defend his client.

Ilelah adjourned the case until August 20 for hearing.

Court shuts down Polaris Bank branches in Osogbo

Polaris Bank branches in Osogbo, the Osun State capital, did not open for business on Monday.

Though no official of the bank was available for comments, a security guard at one of the branches, who spoke under condition of anonymity, said a court in the state had ordered the sealing off of the bank branches following a complaint by a customer.

The three branches of the bank within the metropolis did not open for business.

It was also learnt that all the branches of the bank across the state had been shut since Friday.

Vandalisation of health care centre: Osun Polytechnic students asked to resume with N10,000 fine each

The management of Osun State Polytechnic, Iree on Monday directed full-time students of the institution to resume on Monday, August 5, and pay N10,000 each for vandalising the school’s health centre.

Students of the institution were sent home following the vandalisation of the school’s health centre and a bus on Saturday,  June 1, 2019.

In an internal memo signed by Mrs F. O. Apara for the Registrar, the students were asked to submit a signed affidavit of good behaviour as another condition for resumption.

Nigerian secondary school pupil shot dead in South Africa

A 17-year-old secondary school pupil, Chinonso Obiaju, has been killed in Johannesburg, South Africa, in a suspected xenophobic attack.

According to the President of the Nigerian union in South Africa, Adetola Olubajo, Chinonso was shot dead on Saturday.

Olubanjo, who spoke to the News Agency of Nigeria, said the deceased lived in Roodeprt with his guardian.

According to Olubanjo,  his guardian, Mike Nsofor,  Chinonso was shot around 6.30pm.
