Boris Johnson's girlfriend, Carrie makes unexpected appearance to watch him deliver his first speech as PM

Boris Johnson's girlfriend Carrie Symonds stood front and centre among his staff as the new Prime Minister gave his first speech in Downing Street today - but she did join her partner as he entered Number 10.

The question of how high-profile Mr Johnson's 31-year-old girlfriend would be once he became Prime Minister has been the topic of fevered speculation in Westminster in recent weeks.

And the former Conservative Party communications director, 31, appeared to give her answer this afternoon when she stood, wearing a bold red dress, in front of rows of cameras awaiting his return from Buckingham Palace.

It had been thought Miss Symonds wanted to keep a low profile around her partner's celebrations because he is not yet divorced from estranged wife Marina, with whom he has four children, and she 'did not want to overshadow his moment'. It is not clear when or if she will move into Number 10.

Sporting a shadowed daisy red Ghost dress, Miss Symonds appeared smiling and happy as she listened to her partner speak after he returned from meeting the Queen.

Unlike most new Prime Ministers, who usually pose for photos with their partners as they enter the famous front door, Boris entered the house alone, leaving Miss Symonds outside with staff.
