British woman 'gang-raped in Ayia Napa hotel'

A British woman was allegedly gang raped in Ayia Napa as police revealed 12 people have been arrested.

The 19-year-old woman was staying in the Cyprus party town when she was allegedly attacked by a group of Israeli tourists.

A police source said it is unclear exactly how many of those arrested are implicated in the case.

The official could also not say how the suspects knew or met the woman or whether they had been staying in Ayia Napa as a group.

According to Israeli press outlets, some of those arrested are aged under 18, reports the Mail.

They are expected to appear in Famagusta district court for a custody hearing on Thursday, July 18.

According to Israel's Foreign Office, the government is in contact with the detainees.

In a statement, the government department said: "The Israeli consul in Nicosia, Yossi Wurmbrand, is following developments and is in contact with the detainees.

"Their families have been updated."
