Lagos-Ibadan Rail’ll Ready In June – Amaechi

Minister of Transportation, Mr. Rotimi Amaechi, has assured that by early June this year, the rail transport system would ready for use between Lagos and Ibadan. The Lagos-Abeokuta rail had been completed earlier in the year as passengers were offered a three-month free ride. The period of free ride was however later shortened.

Amaechi who spoke to some journalists over the weekend noted that his commitment to the full take off of rail transportation in Nigeria is aimed at making life easier and better for Nigerians. He undertakes rail inspection trips at least twice in a month. The Ghanaian government recently sent a team led by its Minister of Rail Development, Hon. Joe Ghartey, to come and understudy the progress being made in Nigeria’s rail projects.

The tactical teams of the Edo State Police Command have arrested four suspected members of the much dreaded Boko Haram insurgents.

Spokesman of the command, DSP Chidi Nwabuzor, disclosed this in a statement he released to journalists in Benin Saturday evening, titled: “Arrest of suspected Boko Haram members/armed robbers/kidnappers/cultists and recovery of arms and ammunition.”

He described the suspects as notorious gang members of kidnapping, armed robbery and Boko Haram syndicates ​that were terrorizing Kogi and Edo States axis.

The statement disclosed that a coordinated intelligence collaboration between operatives of the Department of State SSecurity, DSS and the police, led to the arrest of the suspects.

I Hope To Build Muhammadu Buhari University- Aisha

Wife of the President, Aisha Buhari, has expressed her plan to establish a private university to be known as Muhammadu Buhari University.

She disclosed this on Saturday during a town hall meeting in Yola, organised by her in collaboration with Concerned Indigenes of Adamawa.

Aisha, who did not, however, reveal when or where the university would be sited, explained that the university would be established in collaboration with partners from Sudan and Qatar.

Aisha, who lamented the challenges facing education and various sectors in the state, called for active support of the state indigenes in complementing government efforts.

Man Rapes Lady At Gunpoint To ‘Regain Respect’

The police in Lagos have arrested a 27-year old man, Alowale Salu, who ambushed and used a gun to forcefully rape a lady who jilted him.

Salu was among the suspected criminal elements paraded by the Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Mr. Zubairu Muazu at the State Command.

Salu was said to have confessed but tried to justify his action saying that the lady in question humiliated him in their area. He said he lives with the victim in Ojumoye area of Ikorodu, Lagos, and had made several attempts to woo her to no avail. He said on several occasions the lady had disgraced him publicly and he decided to sleep with her to regain his respect.

Buhari Extends Muhammad’s Tenure As Acting CJN

President Muhammadu Buhari has extended the appointment of Tanko Muhammad as the acting chief justice of Nigeria by another three months.

Mr Buhari sent the recommendation to the National Judicial Council and the supervisory body approved the appointment on Thursday, a spokesperson for the NJC, Soji Oye, said in a statement on Saturday.

Mr Muhammad was first appointed in January after the president suspended Chief Justice Walter Onnoghen who was accused of false declaration of asset.

Mr Onnoghen was convicted on Thursday by the Code of Conduct Tribunal, and was barred from holding public office for 10 years. He has denied all allegations against him, and has appealed the ruling.

Meghan Markle and Prince Harry have been criticised for their decision to keep news of their royal baby private, with a commentator claiming it's an "unprecedented slap in the face".

A Nigerian man, Marshal Bernard, on Monday April 15th, took to Facebook to announce the cancellation of his wedding which was meant to HOLD TODAY. Four Akwa Ibom Varsity Students Face Expulsion Over Rape

Four students of the Akwa Ibom State University are on the verge of being rusticated after their involvement in the rape of a female student.

The students, Akpan Matthew, Essien Fidelis, Bassey Joseph and Bassey Columbus, have been suspended from the school and under investigation by the Police.

On March 23, the University received a security report that four male students allegedly raped and caused severe bodily harm to a female student of the Department of Performing Arts and Mass Communication.

Akaninyene Ibanga, Head of Directorate of Information, Public Relations and Protocol of the University, told newsmen that the university would take appropriate steps, if the Police confirms that the students are involved in the act.

TMZ has seen the video, shot from a surveillance camera in the area. You see the shooter race down an alley to the waiting car. The killer stops at the car for a second, then gets inside the passenger seat and the driver floors it. It's apparent from the video, the driver was waiting to bolt from the scene.

As earlier reported, the driver of the car was interviewed by LAPD detectives 2 days after the murder, but was allowed to leave without being arrested. Law enforcement sources had told TMZ, "Sometimes you have to give a little to get a lot." The clear intimation ... the driver was giving cops info.

APC Suspends Ondo Governor Akeredolu For Anti-Party Activities

Rotimi Akeredolu, Governor of Ondo State, has been suspended from the All Progressives Congress (APC) by the national leadership of the party, multiple news outlets have reported.

It was learnt that Akeredolu was suspended by a party committee set up to look into his case.

Custom officers at Hong Kong International Airport have recovered more than half of a kilogram of cocaine from a Nigerian traveller who had allegedly hidden the drug in her body.

The 37-year-old Nigerian arrived in the city on a flight from Lagos via Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.

Customs officers intercepted the suspect, who claimed to be a businesswoman and was said to be acting suspiciously, shortly after her arrival on Thursday.

She was taken to Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Yau Ma Tei for a check-up and confirmed to have foreign objects in her body.

Court Charges Ajimobi, Three Others With Contempt

An Oyo State High Court yesterday charged the state governor, Abiola Ajimobi, with contempt. Also charged alongside the governor are the Oyo State Government, the Commissioner for Agriculture, Natural Resources and Rural Development, and the state’s Attorney General.

The ruling was delivered at Court 1, presided over by Justice Iyabo Yerima, on Thursday.

The subject of the litigation bothers on the revocation of contract awarded to Rahvet International Limited by the Oyo State Government for the construction of a 10,000 metric tonne 4 bin silos projects situated on Oyo-Awe Road, by Awe junction, Oyo town.

The projects currently stand at about 85 per cent completion.

South Africa Hit By Deadly Easter Church Collapse

At least 13 people have died and many were injured when a wall collapsed in South Africa at the start of an Easter service at a Pentecostal church.

Emergency services said that 29 people were rushed to hospital after the collapse in the coastal province of KwaZulu-Natal.

Local officials have blamed the tragedy on heavy rainfall in the area around eMpangeni on Thursday night.

Most of the victims were reportedly women sleeping in the church.

Inmate Gives Birth To Twins In Calabar Prison

A female inmate of the Afokang prison, Calabar (name withheld), has given birth to twins, a boy and girl.

The state Commissioner for Health, Dr Inyang Asibong, told NAN on Saturday in Calabar that the lady gave birth to the twins on Thursday at the Prison yard in Calabar.

The commissioner said she received a distress call from the prison authorities about an inmate with complicated labour issues.

She disclosed that her team immediately swung into action to provide health services to the inmate.

Adele And Husband Simon Konecki Split

Adele and her husband, Simon Konecki have separated. The pop singer’s representatives Benny Tarantini and Carl Fysh confirmed the news in a statement to the Press.

“Adele and her partner have separated,” the emailed statement said. “They are committed to raising their son together lovingly. As always they ask for privacy. There will be no further comment.”

Adele gave birth to her son, Angelo, in 2012.

Chief Imam Of Ebiraland Dies After 55-Year Reign

The Chief Imam of Ebiraland, Alhaji Musa Galadima, has died in the early hours of Friday at the age of 98 years.

Galadima, who was turbaned Chief Imam about 55 years ago, died in a private hospital in Abuja.
He was buried on Friday at Okene according to Islamic rites.

He is survived by wives, children and many grandchildren.

The state governor, Alhaji Yahaya Bello, described Galadima’s death as painful in a statement in Lokoja.

A statement from President Ibrahim Boubacar Keita's office late Thursday said he had accepted the resignation of Prime Minister Soumeylou Boubeye Maiga and his entire cabinet.

Maiga was appointed in December 2017 and renamed to the job only last September, after Keita was re-elected.

But he became the lightning rod for anger, led by influential Muslim clerics and vocalised by mass protests, over massacres in the Mopti region, an ethnic mosaic in the centre of the country.

Snakes Force Liberian President Out Of Office

Snakes have been found in Liberian President George Weah's office, forcing him to work from his private residence, the BBC has learnt.

Press secretary Smith Toby told the BBC that on Wednesday two black snakes were found in the foreign affairs ministry building, his official place of work.

All staff have been told to stay away until 22 April. "It's just to make sure that crawling and creeping things get fumigated from the building," Mr Toby said.

"The Ministry of Foreign Affairs hosts the office of the president, so it did an internal memo asking the staff to stay home while they do the fumigation," he said.

An Indian man has chopped off his index finger in desperation after voting for the wrong party in the country's ongoing national election.

In a video that has gone viral on social media, Pawan Kumar said he became confused by the symbols on the electronic voting machine and voted for Prime Minister Narendra Modi's party instead of its regional rival in Uttar Pradesh state on Thursday.

Distraught, Kumar went home and chopped off his finger with a meat cleaver.

BBM Consumer Service To Shut Down In May

BlackBerry Messenger's consumer service will close down on May 31, 2019, the company announced in a blog post earlier this week.

It's unclear how many users will be affected, but since its launch in 2005, BlackBerry Messenger has experienced a rollercoaster ride of popularity.

However, BlackBerry announced that BBM Enterprise (BBMe) would now be available to everyone - for a fee. The BBM Enterprise app is now available for download in the iOS and Google Play stores.

The service will be free to new users for the first year, but will then cost $2.50 for a six month subscription. Gizmodo reported.

Two Benue Varsity Students Drown In River

Benue State University will investigate the circumstances leading to the suspected drowning of two of its students in River Benue, where they went for swimming, the institution’s management has said.

The students, Adakole Christopher (100 Level Mathematics) and Emmanuella Mson (100 Level Medicine), drowned in the river on Friday, April 5, allegedly while swimming.

In a statement signed by the university’s Information Officer, Mr. Tser Vanger, the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Msugh Kembe, described the deaths as unfortunate.

He said in spite of the orientation given to the fresh students on social outings, the sad incident occurred.

‘We Collected N5m Ransom To Release Fire Director’

Two suspects, allegedly involved in the recent kidnap of Lagos State Fire Service Director, Mr Rasaki Musibau and six others, had confessed collecting N5 million ransom before releasing them.

The Lagos State Fire Service boss and six others were abducted on April 6, while returning from anofficial function by a seven- man gang at the Ketu-Ereyun, Ikorodu-Epe road. The abducted victims were, however, freed three days after they were kidnapped.

The two suspects – Blessing Boyo and Smart Alfred – were paraded on Thursday at the Lagos State Police Command by the Commissioner of Police, CP Zubairu Muazu.

Ebonyi State University Names Institute After Buratai

Following his selfless and unalloyed dedication in ensuring daily security of Nigerians, the Ebonyi State University (EBSU) has named its newly established Institute for Peace and Strategic Studies after the Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lieutenant General Tukur Yusufu Buratai.

He commended the COAS and the NA on the achievements the army has recorded under his leadership in the areas of promotion and maintenance of peace in Nigeria, particularly during the 2019 general elections.
