Xenophobia attack: Nigerian students shutdown South Africa’s Shoprite in Ogun state

National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) on Saturday shutdown South Africa’s grocery chain, Shoprite at Ota in Ogun State.

A News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) correspondent in Ota reports that the students picketed the shopping mall to protest what they described as unrestrained xenophobic attacks on Nigerians in South Africa.

Scores of young Nigerians residing in South Africa have been brought home in body bags in recent years, having been killed in apparent xenophobic attacks in the former apartheid nation.

The Shoprite mall was shut down around 11:10 a.m. in the presence of policemen with shoppers horridly ordered out of the mall.

Nigerian man arrested in Tokyo for ‘inheritance’ scam

Tokyo Metropolitan Police have arrested a male Nigerian national over the alleged swindle of a man in Setagaya Ward earlier this year.

In April and May, the suspect, 36, allegedly defrauded the man, aged in his 50s, out of a total of 3 million yen.

The suspect denies the allegations, telling police he collected the “money to buy a car on behalf of an acquaintance.”

In carrying out the ruse, the suspect posed as an employee of a foreign bank in calling the victim on the telephone. “You can legally collect 400 million yen in an inheritance from a Japanese person with your same surname who died in Libya,” he falsely told the victim.

The victim then sent the money to the bank account of the suspect to cover the preparation of documents necessary to receive the claimed inheritance which inturn was used for his own personal expenses.

Neymar has released a statement after a judge in Brazil ordered the closure of the investigation into claims the football star raped a model in a Paris hotel room in May.

The Brazil and Paris Saint-Germain forward was accused of raping model Najila Trindade Mendes de Souza in the French capital on May 15.

However, this week Brazilian prosecutors followed the police recommendation that the case be dropped due to a lack of evidence.

Neymar, 27, had repeatedly rejected the accusations and released a statement on his Instagram account of Friday saying that his “world had come crashing down” but that he was “relieved” the case was now closed.

President Buhari to visit South Africa over killing of Nigerians, other issues

Amidst the hostility of Nigerian students to South African companies in Nigeria, President Muhammadu Buhari has accepted an invitation to visit his South African counterpart in October.

According to a statement by Garba Shehu, SSA to President Buhari, Buhari and President Cyril Ramaphosa, will seize the visit to discuss issues relating to wellbeing of citizens and ways to further strengthen trade relations between the two largest African economies.

In a telephone conversation with the South African leader at his country home in Daura, Katsina State, President Buhari accepted an invitation to visit the country to further “consider recurrent issues concerning wellbeing of the Nigerian community in South Africa, and the need to promote trade and investment.’’

Ijegun mob beats policeman to death for killing tailor

There was mayhem in Ijegun area of Lagos State, Southwest Nigeria on Saturday as a mob beat a policeman to death for killing a tailor in her shop.

Reports had it that officers of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad, SARS, were chasing suspected Yahoo Boys and were shooting indiscriminately when a stray bullet hit the woman, simply identified as Biliki in her shop. She was rushed to the hospital but died.

But Police Public Relations Officer, PPRO, Lagos State Police Command, Bala Elkana said the police officers were not SARS, but officers of the Anti-Kidnapping Team.

US billionaire Jeffrey Epstein commits suicide in jail

Disgraced US billionaire Jeffrey Epstein, facing a charge of s-x trafficking of minors in New York has committed suicide.

Reports quoting law enforcement officers said the 66 year-old paedophile committed suicide in his cell in a Manhattan jail on Saturday morning. His body was wheeled out and taken to a New York hospital around 7.30am.

The incident comes two weeks after the billionaire was found “injured and in a fetal position” on the floor of his cell, with injuries to his neck. RIP!

Graphic: 62 die after fuel tanker explosion in Tanzania

At least 62 people have died after a fuel tanker exploded in Tanzania.

Witnesses said scores of people had gathered around the tanker to siphon fuel before the blast on Saturday morning.

According to local media, at least 70 more have been injured following the incident in Morogoro - and many of them have suffered serious burns.

Footage from before the explosion showed a large crowd collecting liquid from puddles in jerry cans.

Hoodlums break into Ibru grave to steal his casket

Hoodlums on Thursday broke into the grave of late business mogul, Olorogun Michael Ibru in Agbarha-Otor community, Ughelli North Local Government Area of Delta State.

The incident was discovered in the early hours of Friday, forcing the authorities to restrict movement in the community from 12a.m.

The hoodlums fled after pouring acid on the tomb which is located behind the Ibru Clinic after they failed at getting to the casket.

The matter has now been reported at the Ughelli ‘B’ Division police station.

Agbarha-Otor is the country home of the Ibrus and plays host to the Michael and Cecilia Ibru University.\

Twitter has unverified Vice President Yemi Osinbajo's account. The account created in December 2014 has all it's tweets deleted between last night till this morning, August, 10.

His profile picture and header image have also been taken down.

There are now speculations that the account became unverified due to attempts by hackers. His N2.1m followers still have the privilege of following him.

Bayero University expels 24 students for fake certificates

Twenty four students of Bayero University (BUK) Kano, mostly in their final year of studies have been expelled from the university over falsification of their entry qualifications.

The spokesperson for the university, Malam Lamara Garba disclosed this in a statement on Friday in Kano.

Lamara said the students were expelled following the approval by the Senate of the University at its 374th meeting, held on July 31.

Six other students were withdrawn for presenting fake results from their institutions while another student was withdrawn for presenting a cancelled NECO result.

The statement, however, said 18 students would be re-invited to appear before the Senate Committee on Entry Qualification Irregularities, to give them fair hearing.

One million evacuated as deadly typhoon hits China

At least 13 people have been killed and more than a million forced from their homes as Typhoon Lekima hit China.

Sixteen people were also missing after a landslide was triggered by the storm, state media reported.

Lekima made landfall in the early hours of Saturday in Wenling, between Taiwan and China's financial capital Shanghai.

The storm was initially designated a "super typhoon", but weakened slightly before landfall - when it still had winds of 187km/h (116mph).

10 Turkish sailors captured by Nigerian pirates in July are freed

The 10 Turkish sailors who were kidnapped by gunmen off the coast of Nigeria in July have been freed. There were freed on Friday, state-run Anadolu Agency reported.

The sailors are all in good health, Anadolu said, without giving more details.

The Turkish-flagged ship, Paksoy-1 was attacked on July 16 when sailing from Cameroon’s Douala port to Abidjan port in Ivory Coast. It was not carrying any cargo.

Ten of the 18 Turks aboard the ship were abducted by pirates suspected to be from Nigeria’s delta region. Eight other crew members were left behind and were able to bring the ship to harbour in Ghana. Good news!

Gunmen abduct nursing mother and her five children

A nursing mother and her five children have been abducted by unidentified gunmen at Igwuruta in Ikwerre Local Government Area of Rivers State.

The incident occurred on Wednesday.

Anti-kidnapping unit, the tactical units and ‘A’ grade detectives of the Rivers State Police Command have been mobilized to comb forests and bushes to rescue them.

The Area Commander of Choba Area Police Command, Assistant Commissioner of Police, ACP, Patrick Daaor, who lamented the inhuman and the traumatic condition the abductors would be subjecting the infants and their mother said efforts were ongoing to rescue them unharmed as soon as possible .

Wanted Bobrisky captured by Nigerian army – Wike

Governor Nyesom Wike of Rivers State has announced the capture of notorious cultists, Bobrisky who was declared wanted on Thursday.

The governor had placed N30 million reward for the capture of Bobrisky and the Nigerian Army captured him on Friday.

Wike had on Thursday promised to give N30 million to anyone who will give useful information that will lead to the arrest of those who killed a Director with the Rivers State Government during the Choba crisis and a notorious criminal called Bobrisky in Gokana Local Government Area.

However, on Friday, Wike disclosed during a security meeting with leaders of Rumuolumeni Community at the Government House Port Harcourt, that the Nigerian Army had captured Bobrisky.

Sowore appeals court order keeping him in detention

Omoyele Sowore, on Friday applied to the Federal High Court in Abuja to set aside its order permitting the Department of State Services to detain him for 45 days.

Sowore, the convener of #RevolutionNow protests, through his lawyer, Mr. Femi Falana (SAN), contended among others in the 19-point application that the order issued by the court breached his constitutionally guaranteed fundamental rights.

He also contended that the order of court amounted to legalising the illegality of his detention for about four days prior to the issuance of the court order on Thursday.

Buhari leaves for Daura to celebrate Eid-el-Kabir

President M Buhari has departed Abuja for his hometown, Daura, Katsina State to observe the Eid-el-Kabir. The federal government had on Tuesday declared August 12 and 13 as public holidays to mark the 2019 Eid-El-Kabir celebration.

The president, alongside members of his entourage departed the Presidential Villa for Katsina via the presidential wing of the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport Abuja, after observing the two Raka’at Friday prayer at the State House Mosque.

While in Daura, the president is expected to perform the usual religious obligation of slaughtering rams immediately after the Eid-El-Kabir prayer session on Sunday.

EFCC docks Atiku’s lawyer Giwa-Osagie for allege money laundering

Uyiekpen Giwa-Osagie, lawyer to former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, has been charged with money laundering by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

The EFCC accuses the lawyer of handling $2million without going through a financial institution, an amount that exceeds the amount authorised by law to be transacted in cash.

A three-count charge, signed by prosecuting counsel Rotimi Oyedepo, was filed at the Federal High Court in Lagos on Friday against the lawyer and his brother Erhunse Giwa-Osagie.

EFCC says they allegedly contravened sections 18(a) and 1(a) of the Money Laundering (Prohibition) Act 2011, punishable under Section 16(2)(b).

Court grants Ex- INEC Chairman Maurice Iwu N1bn bail

The Federal High Court Ikoyi has granted bail to Professor Maurice Iwu to the tune of N1 billion.

Professor Iwu was being arraigned on four counts of concealment, fraud and money laundering to the tune of N1.2bn.

In the charge, the EFCC alleged that Professor Iwu aided the concealment of the above sum between December 2014 and March 2015.

The money is believed to be part of the N23.29b slush funds allegedly shared by former Petroleum Minister, Diezani Allison-Madueke, to influence the outcome of the 2015 presidential elections.

Steve Ronsen says his 2012 song Almost, which he posted to SoundCloud, had a three-note melody - G, A, B - which Lady Gaga, 33, replicated for the song, which was hit the top of the charts this past March in the wake of her memorable performance at the Oscars with co-star Bradley Cooper.

Ronsen, who's represented by lawyer Mark D. Shirian, have requested a settlement asking for 'millions and millions' in restitution, sources told Page Six, adding that those in Gaga's inner circle are dismissing the request as a 'brazen shakedown.'

Gaga's lawyer, Orin Snyder, told the outlet that 'Ronsen and his lawyer are trying to make easy money off the back of a successful artist.'

Beninese cook steals politician’s $22,000 in Abuja

A Beninese cook engaged by a politician, Casmir Anyanwu, has stolen a safe containing $22,000, four days after he was employed in Abuja.

Samuel Tchiki, allegedly connived with his compatriots to steal the safe, which they ferried in a taxi to Mpape, a suburb of Abuja, where they vandalised it and then embarked on a shopping spree with the money.

Tchiki and his friends bought television sets, sound systems, generators and other domestic appliances with the money, but the police recovered about $13,000, which they had yet to spend.

Tchiki and his accomplices, Francis Kpohouede, George Akinto, Donald Tokpe, Honore Tokpe and Emmanuel Savi, were paraded by the police in Abuja on Thursday.
