Shocking video: IPOB members attack Ike Ekweremadu today in Germany

The immediate past Deputy President of the Senate, Sen. Ike Ekweremadu has confirmed a physical assault on him by some members of the proscribed Indigenous Peoples of Biafra, IPOB, in Nuremberg, Germany, today.

Ekweremadu confirmed the attack in a statement released by his Media Assistant, Uche Anichukwu.

In the video, Ekweremadu was seen being violently questioned over his alleged conspiracy with the Federal Government to proscribe the IPOB in the South East and killing several of its followers.

The Senator who also gave account of the event on his social media handle, however, assured that he was safe but condemned the attack. Read the statement below...

Ghanaian footballer, Kingsley Sarfo jailed in Sweden for rape is released (photos)

Ghana footballer Kingsley Sarfo has been released from prison in Sweden. He was released earlier than expected and has been deported to his home country, Ghana.

The 24-year-old was released early this week on the ground of good conduct following his incarceration over a r-pe accusation which he denies.

He was jailed for two years and eight months in the European country for two child rape counts.

Sarfo had been in prison after he was charged with defilement in Sweden months earlier and all was taken into consideration for his early release.

Obinwenne Okeke’s arrest: Bisi Alimi says “by God’s grace” is now another word for 419

Nigerian gay rights activist, Bisi Alimi has reacted to Obinwenne Okeke’s arrest in the US saying another word for 419 in Nigeria now can also mean “it’s by God’s grace”.

Reacting to the arrest of the CEO of Invictus Group, Obinwanne Okeke popularly known as Invictus Obi, Bisi took to Facebook and wrote;

''Nigerians have this stupid, fraudulent act of saying “it’s by God’s grace” when you ask them the secrets of their success. Well it is now very clear thanks to Obinwenne Okeke that god’s grace is another word for 419. There is nothing like god’s grace, stop deceiving people. It is either you have made it through hard work, connections or family wealth, and you have a right to share your secret or not to share your secret. FAAN to close runway at Enugu airport August 24

The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) has notified airlines, passengers and all other stakeholders that the runway at Akanu Ibiam International Airport, Enugu will be closed for major repairs.

FAAN’s General Manager, Corporate Affairs, Mrs Henrietta Yakubu, made this known in a statement issued in Lagos on Saturday.

The closure of the airport was coming three months after the immediate past Minister of State, Aviation, Hadi Sirika, said the airport would be closed down over the condition of the runway.

Sirika had said that the airport would be degraded for international operations because the runway length is not ideal for such operations.

FIFA ban: Samson Siasia begs for calm

Samson Siasia has appealed for calm over news of his life ban from the game by world football governing body FIFA.

Siasia was banned for life from the game following a match-fixing probe by FIFA.

Siasia, who spoke to newsmen in Abuja through an associate, Prince Opukiri Jones-Ere at the main bowl of the Moshood Abiola National Stadium, said the matter was currently being looked into by his lawyer.

The former Super Eagles forward said he was hopeful of a positive conclusion of the matter.

The 86-year-old triple Oscar and triple Bafta winner, who was born in Toronto, Canada and moved to Britain in the 1950s, died at his home in Bristol on Friday, his family announced.

Williams was the animation director on the 1988 blockbuster 'Who Framed Roger Rabbit?' - creating characters including Roger and Jessica Rabbit.

President of Gabon, Ali Bongo makes first live public appearance after stroke

Gabonese President Ali Bongo has appeared live in public for the first time almost 10 months after suffering a stroke, walking with a stick as he attended ceremonies in the capital, Libreville.

The 60-year-old, whose every move has been scrutinised for signs of ill health, attended commemorations on the eve of Gabon's anniversary of independence from France in 1960, the AFP news agency reported on Friday.

The appearance marked the first time Bongo had been seen in public outside the presidential palace since his illness in October last year, except for occasions that were filmed and edited by government or state media.

FBI arrests Forbes’ celebrated Nigerian, Obinwanne Okeke for $12m fraud

The US Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) has arrested Nigerian entrepreneur, Obinwanne Okeke of conspiracy to commit fraud running into the sum of $12m.

This was disclosed in an affidavit made available to the press on Friday, by Marshall Ward, a special agent employed by the United States Department of Justice.

According to the information disclosed, the investigation was premised on a complaint lodged by representatives of Unatrac Holdings Limited for being victimized in the fraud.

Woman fakes cancer to get £15,000 wedding ceremony

A woman has been described as the lowest of the low as notes emerged as she tried to trick a small charity into paying for the renewal of her vows.

Wish Upon a Wedding offered to organise a £15,000 ceremony for Carla Evans, 29, who pretended to have cancer. She claimed she had bladder and thyroid cancer, and liver and kidney failure. Evans wrote online that she was dying and needed help and her posts were seen by Karen Hobbs, a volunteer from the charity who was taken in by her lies.

All the charity wanted in return was £500 towards the cost and proof of her diagnosis. However, a forged NHS letter from a hospital consultant at the Royal Gwent Hospital raised alarm bells and Mrs Hobbs launched turned private detective before contacting police.

Jeffrey Epstein’s autopsy confirms he hanged himself

An official autopsy shows that Jeffrey Epstein killed himself by hanging, authorities said Friday.

The 66-year-old pedophile died in his cell at the Metropolitan Correctional Center in lower Manhattan last week, according to findings by the city Medical Examiner’s Office.

The multimillionaire was being held on federal sex-trafficking raps that could have sent him to prison for 45 years.

The autopsy and other evidence confirmed Epstein committed suicide, the ME’s office said without elaborating.

9 Chinese, 8 Ukrainian seamen kidnapped on water

The number and nationalities of the seamen kidnapped off-Cameroon on Thursday have now been revealed. They are nine Chinese and eight Ukrainians, all abducted when two merchant vessels came under attack, believed to be by Nigerian pirates, in Cameroonian waters.

“Seventeen Chinese and Ukrainians were kidnapped… (of whom) nine (are) Chinese who were abducted on one of the ships,” an official in the port of Douala told AFP.

A Cameroonian security official confirmed the account, adding that Cameroon’s security forces had launched a search for them.

The Gulf of Guinea, whose coastline stretches in a huge arc from Liberia to Gabon, is notorious for piracy as well as oil theft, illegal fishing and human and drugs trafficking.

Photos: Customs seizes N5b worth of banned tramadol

The Nigerian Customs Service has intercepted truck-loads of the banned drug, tramadol and others illicit drugs worth N5 billion in Lagos.

The spokesman for the service, Joseph Attah, an assistant comptroller confirmed this to journalists on Friday after conducting newsmen round a warehouse where the trucks of the intercepted items were parked at the Ikeja Training College of the service.

Attah said the Comptroller-General of Customs Strike Force in Zone ‘A’ stumbled on the contraband.

According to him, the smugglers believe that festive period is a time of merriment and less vigilance, “but our officers intercepted the illicit drugs as the smugglers attempted to move it from Lagos to other parts of the country’’.

So sad! Woman strangled to death in Rivers hotel

A young woman identified as Jenifer Nwokocha, from Umuekenyike, Obirikom in Ogba/Egbema/Ndoni Local Government Area of Rivers State was on Thursday strangled to death in a hotel room on Woji Road, GRA Port Harcourt, Rivers state.

The victim, who was in her mid-20s before she was murdered by her yet-to-be-identified assailant was discovered lying lifeless in a hotel room with a white piece of cloth around her neck.

It was learnt that the victim’s corpse was discovered on Thursday morning inside the hotel room after a staff tried to clean the room the deceased and her partner had used.

Samson Siasia speaks on FIFA ban

Former Nigeria coach Samson Siasia has reacted to the life ban and $50,000 fine slammed on him today by FIFA.

According to FIFA, he was banned for agreeing to ‘the manipulation of matches.’

FIFA did not state when he committed the infractions but said the ex-Nigeria international has been notified today.

Reacting to the ban, Siasia vowed to clear his name.

He categorically denied any wrongdoing, stating that he did nothing wrong and he has not received any letter from FIFA regarding the ban from football, Brila FM reports.

The Federal Government on Friday raised the alarm over alleged plans by the leader of the Islamic Movement of Nigeria, Ibraheem El-Zakzaky, to seek asylum.

The government specifically said his actions in India demonstrated malicious intents that were capable of embarrassing the governments of Nigeria and India.

Mum who drowned IVF twins 'to get back at husband' jailed for 10 years

A mum who drowned her "miracle" IVF twins on Boxing Day after her husband left her has been jailed for 10 years.

Samantha Ford killed her 23-month-old toddlers Jake and Chloe in the bath and then tried to die by suicide when she crashed her car into the back of a lorry at 100mph, later telling police: "I've killed my babies. Please let me die."

Her lawyer claims she was suffering from "a catastrophic level" of acute depression "leading her to believe that she and the children needed to die".

But prosecution psychiatrists believe she may have been exaggerating her illness, claiming she killed her twins in a fit of "narcissistic rage", had a "homicide/suicide fantasy" and carried it out in an act of "retaliation and punishment" against her estranged husband Steven.

Ekiti begins naming, shaming of sexual offenders

The Ekiti State Government says it has commenced naming and shaming of individuals involved in sexual crimes.

According to Governor Kayode Fayemi, the state would regularly name and shame every person, who have been convicted for sexual crimes.

Fayemi, in a tweet on his Twitter handle @kfayemi, began the naming with one Rev. Asateru Gabriel, who is serving a five-year year jail term for sexually abusing a seven-year-old girl.

R Kelly misses court hearing after transport mix-up

Singer R. Kelly has missed a court hearing, with prosecutors claiming he "refused transport" from jail. The R&B star was due at a pre-trial hearing for his s-x abuse case in Chicago, Illinois, on Thursday.

Kelly's lawyer said it was "not 100% true" that the singer had refused transport, but explained that "moving Mr Kelly is a large undertaking".

The singer is currently facing several state and federal charges of s-xual abuse in the US.

The accusations include s-xual assault, abuse of a minor, making indecent images of minors, racketeering and obstruction of justice.

Varsity unions begin strike on Monday

Non teaching staff of Universities have threatened to embark on a strike on Monday. Already various branches of the Non Academic Staff Union of Universities and Educational institutions, NASU and the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities, SSANU, are on stand to get directives from the Joint Action Committee, JAC, of the unions for the strike.

The strike according to the unions has become imperative following the alleged poor response from the Federal Government, to meet their demands after the expiration of the 14-day ultimatum to government.

Ex-Banker jailed for stealing depositors’ money

Justice Abiodun Adesodun of the Ekiti State High Court, has convicted a former cashier officer with Fidelity Bank, Ado branch, Ado Ekiti, Michael Adedayo Ihinolurinjon, and sentenced him to ten years in prison for stealing money from the bank’s vault and diverting customers’ deposits to personal use.

Ihinolurinjon was on Thursday, August 15, 2019, found guilty of a two-count charge of stealing in a criminal case filed against him by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, Ibadan zonal office.

The offence, according to the charge sheet, was contrary to Section 390 (g) of the Criminal Code Laws Cap 16, Laws of Ekiti State, 2012.

FIFA bans Samson Siasia for life over match fixing

Federation of International Football Association Friday said it has banned former Nigerian coach Samson Siasia for life on “all football-related activities” over allegations of match fixing.

FIFA also said Siasia, 51-year-old, has been fined CHF 50,000 ($51,051.66).

FIFA said in a statement that the adjudicatory chamber of their independent Ethics Committee found that Siasia was “guilty of having accepted that he would receive bribes in relation to the manipulation of matches in violation of the FIFA Code of Ethics.”

He is the third African to be banned by Fifa for his links to Perumal after former Sierra Leone FA official Abu Bakarr Kabba and former Botswana FA official Mooketsi Kgotlele were suspended in July for five years and for life respectively.

British court orders Irish firm to seize $9b Nigeria’s foreign reserves

An Irish-owned firm was today granted court permission to seize up to $9bn (£7.4bn) in assets from the Nigerian government.

A British judge said that Process and Industrial Developments Ltd (P&ID) can take 20 per cent of Nigeria’s foreign reserves. The move will likely raise concerns among foreign investors.

The saga dates back to a 2010 deal for the Nigerian government to supply gas to a processing plant built and run by P&ID.

However, in 2013 P&ID won a $6.6bn arbitration case. The figure was calculated based on what the company was estimated to have earned over the course of the 20-year agreement.
