Another building collapses in Lagos State

Another building has collapsed at Rademo Street, behind recreation center, Ita Elewa, Ikorodu area of Lagos as a result of Saturday’s heavy downpour.

According to the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency, LASEMA, the one storey building partially caved in because of intense rainfall, but said no life was lost.

Investigations by LASEMA revealed that aside the heavy downpour, the obviously old building constructed with mud bricks, had been seriously distressed over time with visible cracks on its other yet-to-collapse sides.

President Buhari to upgrade aircraft with N1.5bn

President Muhammadu Buhari is proposing to spend N1.492bn on the upgrading of some of the aircraft in the Presidential Air Fleet in 2020.

The sum is apart of the N200.994m the President will be spending on the overhaul of engines of some of the aircraft in the fleet next year.

The figures are contained in the details of the 2020 Appropriation Bill that Buhari presented to a joint session of the National Assembly on Tuesday.

Mother, 3 children die as building collapses in Magodo

A mother and three children have been confirmed dead after a house built on a hill collapsed on another in Otun Araromi area of Isheri – Magodo-Isheri.

The incident was confirmed by General Manager, Lagos State Emergency Management Agency, Femi Oke-Osayintolu.

He said the incident occurred this morning, adding that the bodies of trapped persons have been recovered.

According to him, efforts are ongoing to find more people believed to be trapped in the rubble while relevant agencies are working to ascertain the cause of the collapse.

Man arraigned for 'defrauding' fiancee of N11m

A 37 year old civil engineer, Sampson Adesope, who allegedly defrauded his fiancée of N11 million, on Friday appeared in an Igbosere Magistrates’ Court, Lagos.

Adesope, whose address was not provided, is charged with two counts of fraud and unlawful conversion.

He pleaded not guilty.

The Prosecution Counsel, Insp. Abbass Abayomi, told the court that the defendant committed the offencce on April 24, at Bello Street in Surulere area of Lagos.

Disobedience to court orders will attract grave consequences, Chief Justice of Nigeria warns

The Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Tanko Muhammad, has warned against disobedience to orders issued by courts, stating that it would attract grave consequences.

The CJN issued the warning in Abuja on Friday at the launching of the 9th House of Representatives Legislative Agenda.

While the CJN did not mention a specific case, the warning is coming at a time when the Federal Government and security agencies are under criticisms for the continued detention of a former National Security Adviser, Col. Sambo Dasuki (retd.), Publisher of SaharaReporters, Omoyele Sowore, among several other Nigerians, despite court orders freeing them.

Children sold off since 2014 are re-united with their parents and eight suspects arrested

The Police Command in Kano state has rescued and reunited nine kids with their respective families.

The kids were allegedly kidnapped and sold off to Anambra state for trafficking.

Aged between 2 to 10 years old the children were said to have been kidnapped from various locations within the State capital at different times.

The state Commissioner of Police, Ahmed Iliyasu who handed the kids to their respective families said some of them had gone missing since 2014, but were traced down to Anambra State where they had been sold off.

NNPC announces oil, gas discovery in Bauchi

The Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) has announced the discovery of hydrocarbon (oil and gas) deposits in the Kolmani River II Well on the Upper Benue Trough, Gongola Basin, in the North-Eastern part of the country.

It would be recalled that drilling of the Kolmani River II Well, a site near Barambu, a village in Alkaleri Local Government Area of Bauchi State, was flagged-off by President Muhammadu Buhari on the 2nd of February, 2019.

Preliminary reports indicate that the discovery consists of gas, condensate and light sweet oil of API gravity ranging from 38 to 41 found in stacked siliciclastic cretaceous reservoirs of Yolde, Bima Sandstone and Pre-Bima formations.

Hollywood veteran and oscar nominee, Robert Forster dies of brain cancer

Robert Forster, an Oscar nominee for his starring role in "Jackie Brown," has died after battling brain cancer.

Robert died Friday at his home in Los Angeles, according to his publicist. Sadly, his passing comes on the same day his final film, "El Camino: A Breaking Bad Movie" is released on Netflix.

Forster's been a fixture in Hollywood with several iconic roles since the late 1960s. He earned an Oscar nom for his role, opposite Pam Grier, as Max Cherry in Quentin Tarantino's 1997 movie, "Jackie Brown."

India trains 529 Nigerians

The Indian government has so far trained 529 Nigerians under the Indian Technical and Economic Cooperation (ITEC) in the past three years.

Mr. Abhay Thakur, High Commissioner of India, disclosed this at the 55th anniversary of the ITEC Day in Abuja.

He said in the 2019/2020 ITEC year, the Indian government is offering about 14,000 scholarships to partner countries with Nigeria having 250 slots.

“I am happy to inform you that during the ongoing ITEC year 2019-2020, government of India is offering around 14,000 scholarships to the partner countries, out of these, 250 slots are available for Nigeria, 32 for Cameroon, 10 for Benin, 5 for Chad and 5 for ECOWAS.

Ex-VP Sambo denies ownership of electricity firm

Former Vice President Namadi Sambo has described as “total falsehood and fallacy’’ a story linking him to the ownership of Kaduna Electric Power Distribution Company of Nigeria.

Sambo stated this in a release he signed on Friday in Kaduna.

He said his attention had been drawn to an online publication on a query issued by the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission to Power Distribution Companies.

Charly Boy lost his mom at 102 on Tuesday but announced her passing away on Thursday. The singer has now explained how she died, saying she died in her sleep and in his home.

He also revealed he was out of the country when his mom passed on, but his wife, daughter and granddaughter were all with her. Though his mom had requested a quiet burial, Charly says, he will be givig her a carnival instead.

In a chat with Saturday Beats, he said, “My mother died at 102. I had been out of the country. I spoke with her three days ago before her demise, but we thank God. Her death is a celebration because she lived to a ripe old age. She died in my house— my wife, daughter and granddaughter were all there.”

Mixed reactions as mom allows daughter smoke weed to help her pass her GCSE exams

A mum says she let her daughter smoke marijuana before her GCSEs - because it 'helps her imagination'.

In an online post, the mum explained her teen would smoke a "tiny bit of weed" before school as it helped her relax, the Stoke on Trent Live reports.

She also claims her daughter told her it gives her more "imagination for her essays."

British university orders every student home from Egypt after two are arrested

The University of Edinburgh has told students on a year abroad in Egypt to return home, after two of their students were arrested in the country.

Two of the Edinburgh university's third-year students were detained by Egyptian authorities in Cairo.

Both were released but the reason for their arrests has still not been confirmed, according to student newspaper The Tab.

The University of Edinburgh said it's students studying in Egypt have now arrived safely back in the UK, or 'are in the process of leaving'.

Sowore, Bakare unable to meet bail conditions

The convener of #RevolutionNow protest, Omoyele Sowore, and co-defendant, Olawale Bakare, charged with treasonable felony, among others, are yet to perfect the bail granted them on October 4, 2019 by a Federal High Court in Abuja.

It was learnt on Friday that both men are still in the custody of the Department of State Services (DSS) where they are being held.

Sowore and Bakare were granted by in a ruling last Friday by Justice Ijeoma Ojukwu, but attached conditions, which his lawyer, Femi Falana (SAN) described as stringent.

President Muhammadu Buhari has condemned the cases of s3xual violence in tertiary institutions in the country.

He faulted such incidents and appealed to victims not to cover up cases of abuse but report same to relevant agencies.

“Survivors and their families must avoid cover-up,” the President was quoted as saying in a statement on Friday by his Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, Mr Garba Shehu.

First human to walk in space dies aged 85

First human to walk in space has died. Alexei Leonov, died today at the age of 85.

The Russian cosmonaut made history in 1965, when he conducted the first-ever space walk while on the Voskhod-2 mission. The walk lasted 12 minutes and 9 seconds.

During the mission, his spacesuit filled with air to the point where he struggled to get back into the spacecraft.

He flew in space a second time in 1975, as part of the historic Apollo-Soyuz mission, the first US-Soviet space flight, which occurred as the two superpowers were pursuing a policy of detente during the Cold War.

This is the first picture of a football starlet teenager stabbed to death outside McDonald's.

Baptista was found with critical injuries shortly after 3.20pm yesterday outside Stratford Broadway, east London, in what has been described as a "senseless attack".

The teenager, who was a pupil at St Bonaventure's School, Forest Gate, sadly died about half an hour later at the scene.

The talented footballer was a former player of Mindset FC and had recently signed for Ultra Elite Youth FC who play in the Echo Junior Football League.  He is believed to have had trials with Ipswich Town.

Candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the Kogi West Senatorial District election, Smart Adeyemi, says he will beat Senator Dino Melaye arms down in the fresh elections ordered by the Court of Appeal in a ruling on Friday.

Senator Melaye lost his appeal on the grounds that his application challenging the judgment of the Tribunal could not prove the allegations that he was not given a fair hearing.

Senator Adeyemi in a short message alleged that Senator Melaye had never won any election, owing to manipulations.

Man jailed eight years for r*ping sleeping woman

A salesman has been jailed for eight years for r-ping  a sleeping woman following a drunken night out.

Shane Baldwin, 31, claimed they had had consensual s-x after he tripped over a bed and fell naked on top of her.

The victim, who cannot be named for legal reasons, was staying overnight in a spare room at his then home in Chatham, Kent, in May 2017.

27 year-old man pulls out a spider from his ear

When Liam Gomez awoke feeling dizzy and with a soft scratching sound inside his head, he phoned his work and said he was suffering with vertigo and earache.

But as the 27-year-old web designer plunged a cotton bud into his ear to try to unclog it, he was horrified when it emerged laced with spider legs.

The self-confessed arachnophobe was then forced to spend a torturous hour scraping out the remnants of the creepy-crawly from his ear one body part at a time.

Ethiopian PM Abiy Ahmed Ali wins Nobel Peace Prize

Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed Ali of Ethiopia has won the 2019 Nobel Peace Prize, the awards committee announced in Norway on Friday.

He was recognised for starting peace talks with Eritrea and establishing a peace agreement to end the long stalemate between the two countries.

"When Abiy Ahmed reached out his hand, President Isaias Afwerki grasped it and helped to formalise the peace process between the two countries," said Berit Reiss-Andersen, chair of the Nobel Peace Prize Committee.

"In Ethiopia, even if much work remains, Abiy Ahmed has initiated important reforms that give many citizens hope for a better life and a brighter future.

The office of the Ethiopian prime minister said: "We are proud as a nation" for winning the prestigious award.

FIFA bans former Afghan general secretary

Sayed Aghazada, the former general secretary of the Afghanistan Football Federation (AFF), has been banned for five years and fined after FIFA’s ethics committee found him guilty of violations relating to the abuse of female players.

The world soccer body said in a statement that the investigation concerned complaints lodged by several female Afghan football players against former AFF president Keramuudin Karim.

Karim was banned for life in June.

The female players’ complaints related to sexual abuse between 2013 and 2018, at a time when Aghazada, who is on the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) executive committee, was general secretary.

N.a.k.e.d woman surrounded by nappies in room 'stinking of urine 'killed by husband'

A pensioner found lifeless and n.a.k.e.d in her living room stank of urine in one of the worst cases a doctor had ever seen.

Maureen Crilley, 67, was allegedly killed by husband Neil Crilley, 77, in their own home.

A court heard Mary Eason, a doctor, was unable to examine Mrs Crilley as she was in so much pain.

She later died in hospital, Daily Record reports. High Court in Glasgow was told Crilley knew his wife was “immobilised” suffering from injury and infection.

Maureen is said to have been in need of “medical assistance” and unable to help herself.

Eating mushrooms can reduce men's risk of prostate cancer, study reveals

It’s a love or hate ingredient, but a new study has revealed a link between eating mushrooms and lower risk of prostate cancer.

Researchers from Tohoku University suggest that consuming mushrooms on a regular basis reduces the risk of prostate cancer in men - especially those aged 50 or older.

Dr Shu Zhang, who led the study, said: "Test-tube studies and studies conducted on living organisms have shown that mushrooms have the potential to prevent prostate cancer.

"However, the relationship between mushroom consumption and incident prostate cancer in humans has never been investigated before.

Multiple stabbings at Manchester mall, four injured

Four people were injured Friday in a stabbing at a shopping mall in Manchester, northwest England police say.

Counter-terrorism police are leading the investigation into the incident at Arndale shopping center, Greater Manchester Police said, which happened at around 11:15 a.m. local time (6:15 a.m. ET).

"At this stage we believe that four people were injured during the incident -- not five as previously reported. We will update as the situation becomes clear," police said in a statement.

Police said earlier that a 40-year-old man had been arrested on suspicion of serious assault and that they were "keeping an open might about the motivation of this terrible incident and the circumstances."

Court’s verdict: We shall overcome, Melaye reacts

Embattled Senator, Dino Melaye has reacted to the nullification of his election by the Appeal Court today. Melaye said he would surely overcome as the court had ordered a re-run election.

According to the lawmaker, he gave God the praise and was sure that God would surely complete what he had started.

Melaye said he had asked his supporters to be law-abiding as he was sure of victory with the re-run election.

“I just lost my election at the Appeal Court and Fresh election ordered. In all things I give God the Praise. He who started a good thing will definitely complete it. I ask my supporters to be law abiding as we shall always overcome. To God be the Glory,” he tweeted.

Oprah Winfrey insists she does not regret that she and her long-time partner never married or had kids

Oprah Winfrey has been with her partner Stedman Graham for 32 years, but she doesn't regret at all that they never tied the knot or had children.

The 65-year-old covers the new issue of People this week, and told the magazine that the longtime couple's 'untraditional' relationship has stayed strong all these years precisely because she and Stedman, 68, never got married.

'Both he and I now say, "If we had married, we would not be together,"' she said. 'No question about it — we would not stay married, because of what that would have meant to him, and I would have had my own ideas about it.'

The media mogul met her longtime love in 1986, and they even got engaged in 1992 — but they never went through with a wedding.
