Official: Adeyemi ousts Melaye from Senate

Senator Smart Adeyemi of the All Progressives Congress has ousted Senator Dino Melaye of the Peoples Democratic Party from the Senate, according to the official result declared in Lokoja on Saturday night.

Adeyemi will now represent Kogi.

The Returning Officer of the election, Professor Olajide Lawal, said Adeyemi, who represented the district from 2007-2015, polled 88,373 votes to beat Senator Dino Melaye of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) who scored 62,133 votes.

Ambassador Rufus Aiyenigba of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) came third in the poll with 659 votes and was trailed by John Olabode and Adeyemi Taiwo of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) and Nigeria Elements Progressive Party (NEPP who) garnered 262 and 119 votes respectively.

The former Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon Adeyemi Ikuforiji is back on the radar with a bang! He’s back with two major accomplishments; He just completed his Doctor of Business Administration (DBA) in Leadership at the Liverpool Business School, John Moores University, Liverpool, England.

He was also called to Bar on Wednesday in Abuja, having passed the one year Law School examination.

Apparently with his eyes set for the future, Ikuforiji, who is the longest serving speaker in the history of the State law making body, went back to school to, according to him, seek more knowledge on leadership and management. “The doctorate took me over five years to complete due to the exigencies of my former office and the nature of my research,” he said.

Oil tanker burns on Otedola Bridge, Lagos

The Lagos Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) says a tanker loaded with 33,000 litres of petrol with registration number KJA-900XR, on Saturday caught fire on the Otedola Bridge.

The Public Affairs Officer of LASEMA, Mr Nusa Okunbor, made the disclosure in a statement in Lagos.

According to him, an investigation revealed that the tanker experienced burst tyres while in motion.

”The tyres of the tanker caught fire due to continuous motion and led to an outbreak of fire due to heat generated by the motion.

Melaye crushed in Kogi West rerun, Senate seat gone

There appears to be no redemption, no comeback for Senator Dino Melaye in Kogi West district rerun as he has been electorally sacked by his opponent, Senator Smart Adeyemi.

The opponent that Melaye once characterised as his ‘political wife’ continued with his winning momentum as many results from the 53 polling units streamed in.

PDP won only in 2 units, while Adeyemi won in 24, out of the units, where results were declared.

Melaye, however, in a tweet, described the results as ‘magic figures’, claiming that he has been the preferred candidate of voters.

The wife of the President spoke at the Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs General Assembly and National Executive Council Meeting held at the National Mosque in Abuja on Friday.

She said, “We should either fasten our seatbelt or do the needful or we will all regret it very soon because, at the rate things are going, things are getting completely out of hand. The VP (Yemi Osinbajo) is here, some ministers are here, they are supposed to do justice to the situation.

An officer of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority, LASTMA, Ola Oyeshina has been stoned to death at Iganmu-Sifax axis of Apapa, Lagos while trying to decongest the area of traffic.

The incident reportedly occurred on Friday around 5.00pm.

According to LASEMA’s General Manager, Olajide Oduyoye, a large stone was thrown at him by some people and that two persons had been arrested in connection with the murder.

Condemning the murder of Oyeshina, the LASTMA boss said the government would not fold its arm and allow its officers to be attacked by hoodlums.

Kogi West: Early results favour APC, Dino Melaye cries foul again

Voting has been concluded in the Kogi West supplementary election and counting of votes has started in the 53 polling units where supplementary election took place today.

Early report shows that in GRA Asuta ward 01 Kabba, APC had 254 while PDP had 95; But in the same town, Town Hall, polling Unit 002, Asuta Ward, APC had 48 while PDP had 98.

With other results yet to be collated, the PDP candidate, Senator Dino Melaye has raised the red flag again, alleging alteration of results.

In a tweet, he commended the voters in the district for voting for him, against the APC rival, Smart Adeyemi. At the same time, he claimed magic results were emerging.

Gunmen kill FRSC officer, injure other on Lokoja-Okene highway

Unidentified gunmen have attacked two Federal Road Safety Corps officers travelling from Abuja to Lagos on an official assignment on Friday, killing one and injuring the other.

The officers were travelling in a Toyota Hilux pick-up van with registration number, PILOT 01A when the driver was shot in the head at Oshawa near Lokoja, the Kogi State capital.

The Corps Education Officer, Commander Bisi Kazeem, disclosed in a statement on Saturday that the incident occurred at about 1:50 p.m. on the Lokoja-Okene Highway.

It said, “The suspected kidnappers, according to first information report, were said to have opened fire at the sight of the marked vehicle and, unfortunately, shot the driver in the head, killing him instantly.

I told Diezani not to bring money home —Husband

A former Minister of Petroleum Resources, Diezani Alison-Madueke, lost her ability to speak and subsequently fell into a coma due to the complications of the cancer she had, her husband has said.

Diezani’s husband, Rear Admiral Alison Madueke (retd.), said this in his recently published book titled, ‘Riding the Storms with God on My Side’.

Madueke, who is a former Chief of Naval Staff, said towards the end of the Goodluck Jonathan administration in 2015, Diezani was diagnosed with cancer and had to be flown to London for treatment.

He said, “On Sunday, July 26, 2015, I stepped into my bedroom soon after our brunch to find that my phone was ringing. It was my mother-in-law, Mrs. Beatrice Agama, who was staying with Diezani while she was undertaking treatment. She was sobbing and only managed to inform me that my wife was no longer talking.

FIFA bans former Brazil football chief banned for life for taking bribes

Former Brazilian Football Confederation president Ricardo Teixeira has been banned from the game for life by Fifa.

Teixeira, who resigned in 2012, was found guilty of bribery in violation of the Fifa code of ethics.

Fifa said its former executive committee member took bribes for marketing and media rights for continental and Brazilian football competitions between 2006 and 2012.

A fine of one million Swiss francs (£773,500) was "imposed", Fifa said.

Yusuf Buhari sues wife for changing children’s school without permission

A man, Yusuf Buhari, on Friday, sued his estranged wife, Hadiza Muhammad, to a Sharia Court, sitting in Magajin Gari, Kaduna State, for changing the school of their two female children without his consent.

Mr Buhari, who resides within the Kaduna Metropolis, through his counsel, Sani Shehu, told the court that Ms Muhammad took his two female children to her parents’ house and changed their school from the one in which he had enrolled them without his consent.

The counsel also said that for six months, Ms Muhammad refused to allow her estranged husband see his children as ordered by a court, even though they still remained husband and wife.

Cholera outbreak kills five people in Ogun State

In 12 reported cases of cholera on Friday at Lafenwa, Abeokuta North local council of Ogun State, no fewer than five persons have been confirmed dead.

The Permanent Secretary in the state’s Ministry of Health, Dr Adesanya Ayinde, said at a news conference in Abeokuta that one person died in the hospital and four in the affected communities.

He listed the communities to include Kuto, Kobiti, Abule-Otun, Lafenwa, all in Abeokuta.

Ayinde revealed that eight cases were reported from health facilities and four picked in the communities from retrospective case search and confirmed through laboratory test.

FG wants all unqualified teachers flushed out of schools by December 31

The Federal Government has directed that all unqualified teachers should be flushed out of schools by December 31, Prof. Segun Ajiboye, Registrar, Teachers Registration Council of Nigeria (TRCN), said on Friday.

Ajiboye stated this in Ibadan at the induction of no fewer than 200 education graduates of the University of Ibadan. According to him, quacks teaching Nigerian children will be thrown out and replaced by qualified and certificated education graduates to mold sound future leaders for the country.

The registrar said that teachers must stand shoulder to shoulder with other professional groups in the knowledge-driven economy. Administering the oath of practice on the inductees, Ajiboye reiterated that any teacher found wanting in the code of practice would be sanctioned.

He also said that Nigerian teachers now had a separate and unique career path with the recent approval of teachers’ career path by the National Council on Education.

London Bridge attacker named as convicted terrorist

The London Bridge attacker who killed a man and a woman has been named by police as 28-year-old Usman Khan.

Khan was convicted in 2012 for terrorism offences and released from prison last December on licence, Metropolitan Police Assistant Commissioner Neil Basu said.

The Commissioner said Khan had been living in the Staffordshire area and officers were searching the address.

He added police were "not actively seeking anyone else" over the attack which left two dead and several others injured.

Police pursue pastor wanted for ‘defiling’ minors

Police are pursuing a preacher suspected to have allegedly defiled over 20 girls and impregnated several others in Mwingi Sub-County, Kitui.

On Wednesday, police rescued more than 10 girls in different rental houses where the pastor is said to have held them hostage as sex slaves.

The pastor’s wife was also arrested and is assisting police with investigations.

Mwingi Sub-County OCPD, Peter Mutuma, said the preacher identified is on the run.

Woman kills house-help for ‘sleeping with her husband’

A court in Limuru, Kiambu County, Kenya has ordered that a 45-year-old woman accused of killing her house-help be detained for 14 days as investigations into her alleged crime continue.

The suspect, Sarafina Wanjiku, allegedly killed one Njoki on Thursday, November 28, in her [Wanjiku’s] house in Githirioni Village, the court was told. Njoki is said to be in her 20s.

Limuru Principal Magistrate, Sandra Ogot, also ordered that a mental examination be conducted on Wanjiku before she takes plea.

The suspect is said to have stabbed Njoki multiple times after accusing her of sleeping with her [Wanjiku’s] husband.

Wanjiku will be arraigned on December 16 to take plea.

Nigerian rapper Illbliss fondly called ‘Oga boss,’ stunned many of his fans when he interpreted the role of Odogwu Malay in Kemi Adetiba’s ‘King of Boys’. The talented rapper got countless reviews for his role in the 2018 political thriller.

In a chat with Saturday Beats, Illbliss revealed that he had his initial fears when he took on the role.

“I had my initial fears when I wanted to appear in King of Boys because it was my debut acting appearance .I only dabbled into it. I took a gamble and it worked. It feels good to know that you can try other things outside of your comfort zone and get results from them”.

Lagos motorcyclist defiles 6-year-old daughter

A commercial motorcyclist in Lagos, Amarachi Chukwuneke, is currently cooling his feet in prison custody for reportedly sexually molesting his six-year-old daughter.

Chukwuneke, 43, was arrested by the police at the Festac Division, following a report by his neighbour in the Amuwo Odofin area of the state.

The suspect had separated from his wife and the victim together with her two siblings lived with him, City Round gathered.

It was learnt that the neighbour had observed the girl walking into the compound with uneasiness while returning from school on November 5, 2019.

The body of a woman has been found after she was allegedly r.a.p.e.d and murdered in Hyderabad, India.

The victim, a 27-year-old veterinary doctor, was reportedly found in an underpass in the outskirts of the city by a passer-by.

Police have reportedly detained at least two people, who they suspect offered to help the woman fix a flat tyre on her motorbike but instead drove her to a secluded spot and killed her.

The veterinarian’s remains were reportedly so badly burnt that her family could only identify her from a locket she was wearing. Her identity has not been revealed for legal reasons.

A Californian woman claims her ultrasound picture shows her late father kissing her unborn daughter.

Shantel Carrillo, 30, from Santee, posted the 20-week ultrasound to social media and friends were quick to notice something unusual.

'Right when I posted it, like 30 seconds later, someone was like, 'There's an angel kissing your baby,' Shantel told NBC San Diego. 

Shantel believes her late father, Chuck, who passed away in 2016, can be seen kissing her daughter in the womb.

Suriname President Bouterse convicted of murder

A court in Suriname on Friday convicted President Desi Bouterse of murder for the execution of 15 opponents in 1982 following a coup to seize power, sentencing the man who has dominated the former Dutch colony’s recent history to 20 years in prison.

Opposition parties called for Bouterse, currently in China on an official visit, to step down. The military court that found him guilty has not yet ordered his arrest.

Bouterse led the South American country through the 1980s as head of a military government, then assumed office again in 2010 and secured re-election five years later.

Ogun Government cancels environmental sanitation exercise for November

The Ogun State Government has cancelled the monthly sanitation exercise and lifted the restriction of movement for November in the state.

Kunle Somorin, the Chief Press Secretary to Governor Dapo Abiodun, announced this in a statement on Friday.

He explained that the decision was to enable secondary school students across the state to take part in the ongoing National Examination Council (NECO) examinations.

Somorin stressed that the decision was arrived at after reviewing the challenges that the restriction of movement would have on the examination scheduled for Saturday.

According to him, this coincides with the timing of the monthly sanitation exercise.

“It has become expedient that the interest of the students be considered.

Ex-banker, Fadayomi, jailed six years for stealing N11m

Justice Mohammed Owolabi of the Oyo State High Court on Friday sentenced a former staff of the Ayete Microfinance Bank Limited, situated in Ayete, Oyo State, Sunday Fadayomi to six years imprisonment without an option of fine.

Pronouncing Fadayomi guilty of all the 30 count criminal charges filed against him by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, Ibadan zonal office, Justice Owolabi sentenced him to jail for stealing N11 million from the bank’s vault while he was a staff of the bank.

The convict is an information system expert in charge of the bank’s information technology section, the position he held for about 10 years before his criminal exploits were blown open.

A cheating husband's affair has been exposed after he was pictured in the background of a newspaper restaurant review with another woman.

Food critic for the Washington post Tom Sietsema posted about the incident on Twitter after the anonymous wife wrote to him to explain what had happened.

She claimed one of Tom's food reviews was accompanied by a photo of her husband dining with another woman.

Once she confronted him with the picture, she says he did not deny the affair.

Court told how Mompha used Fidelity Bank for his 'fraudulent' transactions

A prosecution witness, Peter Ademola Adegoke, a Compliance Officer with Fidelity Bank Plc, on Friday told Justice Abdullai Liman of the Federal High Court in Ikoyi, Lagos how the sum of N18bn was paid into the account of a company, Ismalob Global Investments, belonging to Ismaila Mustapha, also known as Mompha.

Mompha was arraigned on November 25, 2019 on a 14-count charge bordering on money laundering to the tune of N33 billion.

Adegoke, told the judge that evidence showed that Mompha was the sole signatory to Ismalob Global’s naira account.

Lloyd Maloney and his friend Jamie Ruff drunkenly smashed up the Renault Clio after flying into a rage.

Police arrest suspected cultists over Benue killings

The Benue Police Command on Friday said it arrested 16 suspected cults members in connection with several killings in the state.

The State Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), DSP Catherine Anene, in Makurdi said that the mode of the homicide has links with cult killings.

Anene said that the arrests of the suspected cultists was over a period of three weeks, adding that the command had deployed officers in strategic areas to forestall further killings in the state.

According to her, the command had also held a roundtable discussion with stakeholders concerning the sudden rise of cult activities in the state and solicited information to execute arrests of those behind it.

Are you 'brain-dead'? Turkey's Erdogan raps Macron before NATO summit

Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan said on Friday that Emmanuel Macron’s warning that NATO was dying reflects a “sick and shallow” understanding, telling the French president “you should check whether you are brain dead”.

The comments drew a swift rebuke from the French foreign ministry, which summoned Turkey’s ambassador to Paris to protest over what a French presidential adviser called “insults”.

Dad who murdered newborn son by shaking him so hard he broke 28 bones jailed for life

A dad who murdered his six-week-old son by shaking him so hard he suffered 28 broken bones has been jailed for life.

Lee Vernon inflicted fatal head injuries on little McKenzie Ellis in Broadstairs, Kent, and the baby died at a London hospital in July last year.

Kent Police said they were alerted on July 23, 2018, when Vernon called the emergency services to report his son was unconscious and he had no idea why.

When asked if the child had hurt himself in any way he replied "no, not really", police said.
