Fire outbreak disrupts flights into Port Harcourt airport

A fire outbreak on the runway of the Port Harcourt International Airport, this evening, disrupted flight activities.

It was gathered that the fire prevented a Max Air flight from taking off while an Arik flight had to return to base.

A Dana flight from Abuja to Port Harcourt also reportedly had to return to the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, as it could not land due to the fire.

Although the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria could not be reached, a source said it was a bush fire. The source said the airport had been closed for the smoke to dissipate and would be opened within a short period.

Gas explosion rocks Kaduna, Prof, four others killed

There was confusion in the Sabon Tasha area of Kaduna State on Saturday following a gas explosion.

The gas explosion occurred on business premises located along Kachia Road, Sabon Tasha, in Chikun Local Government Area between 2.30pm and 3.00pm according to eyewitnesses.

A resident, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said more than five persons were killed in the incident.

“Red Cross officials used shovels to evacuate body parts of victims,” he said.

At least two rockets have reportedly been fired near the US Embassy in Baghdad.

Another three rockets were reportedly fired at Balad Airbase housing American troops north of Baghdad.

There have been no reports of injuries.

Abducted Taraba chief escapes from captors

Daniel Mbatelen abducted by yet to be identified persons in Taraba State has escaped from the custody of his captors.

According to a family source, Mbatelen ran into the family compound at Dan-Anacha on Saturday afternoon while they were holding a meeting on how to raise the ransom demanded for his release.

The source added that Mbatelen was unhurt, and how he escaped remained a mystery his relatives do not understand.

Four Nigerian stowaways arrested in the UK in 2018 December have been jailed for a total of seven years. While on the ship, they hurled faeces at elite SBS sailors and vowed to infect them with HIV during a tense stand-off in the Thames Estuary.

The stowaways also threatened to kill crew members with metal poles when they broke free from quarantine on the 78,000-tonne Italian merchant ship on 21 December 2018. They said they would steer it to the UK.

Helicopters with specialist sailors were sent to rescue the Grande Tema’s crew and arrest the men while the ship floated off the Essex coast.

Woman and her husband shot dead 'by her dad' in New Year horror

A dad reportedly gunned down his daughter and her new husband on New Year's Eve before turning the gun on himself.

The gunman, thought to be the estranged father of Lindita Musai, is under police guard in hospital after the festive horror which saw the 25-year-old woman and her new husband shot dead at an address in Melbourne, Australia.

The suspected killer, who police said was a 55-year-old man, was said to have blasted 29-year-old Veton Musai and his wife at around 10.30am on Tuesday.

A witness then reportedly saw him jump out of a bush and put a gun to his chin before pulling the trigger.

76-year old singer, Rod Stewart charged with assault

British rock singer Sir Rod Stewart has been charged after allegedly punching a hotel security guard outside a children’s party in Florida.

The singer of “Maggie May”, who will be 76 on 10 January, was with his family at Breakers Hotel, Palm Beach, on New Year’s Eve when he was refused access to a party in the children’s section of the resort, according to a police report obtained.

Stewart was attempting to enter the event with his 39-year-old son.

The ex-singer of the Faces — recognisable by his hoarse voice and blond mop of hair — was charged with simple battery, a minor offence which is generally punishable by a fine.

He is scheduled to appear in a Palm Beach court on February 5.

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has urged members of the Peoples Democratic Party to concentrate on strengthening the main opposition platform before the 2023 election cycle.

“Our preoccupation at this point in the @OfficialPDPNig should not focus on elections, but on rebuilding and strengthening our party for the challenges ahead of us,” Mr Abubakar, who was the party’s presidential candidate in 2019, said in a tweet this morning.

Mr Abubakar said rather than playing politics when campaign season was still at least 30 months away, resources should be channelled towards bolstering the PDP structure, which has weakened consistently since it lost the centre after 16 years in 2015.

Three fires have combined to form a single blaze bigger than the New York borough of Manhattan, as Australian firefighters battle what has been predicted to the most catastrophic day yet in an already devastating bushfire season.

The fires joined overnight in the Omeo region in Victoria state, creating a 6,000-hectare (23 square mile) blaze, according to Gippsland's Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning.

In neighboring New South Wales state, a fire in the Wollondilly region south of the capital Sydney remains "out of control," according to the Rural Fire Service. It has burned 264,000 hectares (1,020 square miles) of land in recent months.

Weather conditions are deteriorating rapidly on Saturday, with the country's Bureau of Meteorology warning that winds are picking up and temperatures increasing. "Today will be a day of severe to extreme fire danger through many districts," the bureau said.

Huge crowds expected in Baghdad for funeral of Iranian general killed by US

The bodies of Iranian general Qassem Suleimani and others killed in a US drone strike will be taken on a funeral procession starting in Baghdad on Saturday ahead of a public farewell for the slain military leader in Tehran the following day.

Fresh airstrikes against Iran-backed militiamen were reported in the Iraqi capital on Saturday morning as Iranian leaders declared Suleimani’s targeted assassination outside Baghdad airport on Friday morning to be “an act of war”.

The Popular Mobilisation Forces (PMF), an umbrella group of paramilitary groups, claimed five medics had been killed in the latest attack. But the US denied it had carried out any attacks and the Iraqi military later issued a statement saying that no attack had taken place.

Hundreds of thousands of mourners are expected to turn out for the funeral processions in Baghdad on Saturday, further raising tensions in a city where US installations have already come under attack this week. The US state department has told its citizens to leave the city.

Retired judge, 60, is found dead in her hot tub on Christmas Day but it's not murder

A retired judge drowned in her hot tub on Christmas Day after accidentally falling and hitting her head in her new Georgia vacation home, according to investigators.

Tracy Sheehan, 60, was found face down in the water by a concerned neighbor after they heard her dog barking at her cabin in Blue Ridge.

Sheehan - who was also a former TV anchor and had survived breast cancer was a judge in Hillsborough County, Florida, for 11 years until 2017.

She is understood to have been dead for several hours when she was found in the home she purchased in October.

Gunmen abduct three in Kwara, demand N50m

Gunmen have kidnapped three indigenes of Obbo-Aiyegunle in  the Ekiti local Government Area of Kwara State on New Year’s Eve.

According to the former chairman of  the council, Chief Ezekiel Gbadeyan, two men and a woman travelling home for New Year were abducted by the hoodlums along Osi-Obbo-Aiyegunle road.

According to sources, the fourth person escaped with serious injuries.

It was learnt on Friday that the trio’s abductors  had allegedly demanded  N50m from their families for their  release.

Nigerians can’t continue going overseas for treatment - President Buhari

The President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), on Friday, said Nigerians should not continue going abroad for medical treatment.

“Nigerians have suffered so much going abroad for medical treatment. This is not good for us and it must stop because we can’t afford it again,” he said.

The President, who himself had travelled to the United Kingdom for treatment on several occasions, stated this at the Alex Ekwueme Federal University Teaching Hospital, Abakaliki, during the inauguration and handover of completed projects to the management of the hospital.

He explained that the project was executed to check flooding and gully erosion in the hospital.

The President, who was represented at the event by the Minister of Science and Technology, Dr Ogbonnaya Onu, lamented the devastating effects of flooding in the South-East geo-political zone, saying the intervention project would bring relief to the hospital, the state and its neighbours.

Bobbi Kristina Brown's ex-fiancé Nick Gordon 'had black fluid coming from his mouth', according to a released 911 dispatch audio.

TMZ has reported that before paramedics arrived, a dispatcher is heard saying in the 911 call: "Black stuff is coming out of his mouth and he is not breathing."

The 30-year-old reportedly died of a suspected overdose on Christmas Day.

The black fluid coming from his mouth and nostrils is reportedly consistent with an opioid overdose, which is more commonly known as heroin.

A dad and his nine-year-old daughter have been accidentally shot dead after hunters mistook them for deer.

Kim Drawdy, 30, and his daughter Lauren, were targeted by mistake during a hunting trip in South Carolina on Wednesday, New Year's Day.

Four hunters were attempting to move deer when the tragedy happened, the SC Department of Natural Resources said.

Both father and daughter sadly died of their injuries at the scene, the Post and Courier reports.

Captain America actress accused of killing her mother

An actress who had a small role in Captain America: The First Avenger has been arrested after she allegedly fatally stabbed her own mother.

Mollie Fitzgerald, a 38-year-old actress and director, is accused of attacking her mother in her own house. Patricia “Tee” Fitzgerald, 68, was found dead on Dec. 20 inside her home in Olathe, Kansas.

Mollie Fitzgerald has been charged with second-degree murder, PEOPLE confirms. She is being held on $500,000 bond at the Johnson County Jail.

According to the Kansas City Star, the victim was in the process of moving back to Kansas City from Texas when she was killed. Police have not released a motive for the killing.

Gunmen invade Kogi community, kill 19, burn houses

Gunmen have killed no fewer than 19 people in Tawari community in the Kogi Local Government Area of Kogi State, burning buildings, including the palace of the king of the community.

The Public Relations Officer of the Kogi State Police Command, Williams Anya, confirmed the development in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lokoja on Friday.

He said a police assessment team had visited the community and that many buildings, including places of worship had been burnt.

Tawari community is a few kilometres off Gegu town along the Lokoja-Abuja highway.

Boxing legend Leon Spinks, who defeated Muhammad Ali diagnosed with prostate cancer

Former world heavyweight champion Leon Spinks has been diagnosed with prostate cancer, his wife Brenda has confirmed.

The 66-year-old was rushed to a Las Vegas hospital in a serious condition last month.

The medical condition of the boxer, who shocked the world by beating Muhammad Ali in 1978, was unclear but his partner posted on social media asking people to “pray for my beautiful husband.”

Now Brenda has revealed the cancer has spread to Spinks’ bladder.

Sacked Oyo chairmen deserved treatment they got, says Gov Makinde

Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State has defended his recent inauguration of Caretaker Committees in the 33 Local Governments and 35 Local Council Development Areas.

Makinde defended his action in a statement signed by his Chief Press Secretary, Mr Taiwo Adisa, on Friday in Ibadan.

The governor’s reaction followed an allegation by the former council chairmen in the state under the aegis of the Association of Local Governments that he disobeyed a court by inaugurating the committees.

Ghana’s Football Association (GFA) has sacked the coaches of all their men’s and women’s national teams.

The GFA did not give a reason for the move.

Man who plotted Buhari’s phantom wedding in video nabbed by DSS

The Department of State Services (DSS), has paraded the mastermind of the double phantom wedding between President Buhari and the minister of humanitarian affairs, Sadiya Umar Farouq on one hand, Buhari and minister of finance, Zainab Ahmed, on the other.

He is a 32-year-old man, Kabiru Mohammed, a member of the Kwankwasiya Movement in Kano.

Dr. Peter Afunanya, the DSS spokesman said Kabiru, who is not known to work for Kannywood, was behind the creation and sharing of a fake video in connection with the fake wedding.

Afunanya said the agency sprang into action to fish out the mastermind following formal complaints lodged by the two ministers on separate occasions after the fake videos had gone viral between August and October 2019.
