The Chairman, All Progressives Congress (APC) in Ese-Odo local government area of Ondo state Samuel Olorunwa has resigned his membership of the party.

He tendered his resignation letter at the party Secretariat on Friday and announced his defection to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

Olorunwa in a telephone conversation, said he resigned his position as chairman as well as being a member of APC from Friday 10th July, 2020.

It was gathered that his action was propelled by the recent defection of the state Deputy Governor, Mr Agboola Ajayi to the PDP.

Policeman shoots 32-year-old businessman dead in Ibadan

A policeman in Ibadan on Thursday afternoon allegedly shot a 32-year-old businessman, Yemi Ajayi, dead at the Iwo Road interchange, Ibadan, Oyo State.

A witness who pledged anonymity told journalists that some policemen drove to the scene of the incident in a Nissan Micra car and stopped the car being driven by the deceased cousin, Kayode Atanda.

Kayode and late Ajayi were said to be on their way to work in a Toyota Camry car.

The source said that before the driver had slowed down to clear off the highway, one of the policemen started struggling with him over the steering wheel.

Man ‘attacked wife with hammer and killed baby after finding out it wasn't his’

A man has been charged with murder after allegedly battering his much younger wife with a hammer and smothering her baby after discovering he was not the father.

Dennis Chambers, 60, was arrested in relation to the savage attack on Corena Chambers, 24, and death of her five-month-old baby - who was suffocated with a burping cloth, according to police in Virginia.

The Gloucester County Sheriff's Office found the child's body and the severely injured woman at the family home on Wednesday afternoon while undertaking a welfare check, according to a criminal complaint seen by WVEC.

The lifeless body of the young baby was also found at the scene.

Man kills own four-year old son in Anambra [photos]

A 35-year-old man, Mr Christian Alisigwe from Ihite Azia, Ihiala local government area of Anambra State has killed his four-year-old son.

It was gathered that he butchered him with a cutlass.

Police authorities, who are working to unravel the reason for the action, said the four-year-old, Ebubechukwu Alisigwe was buried by the suspect after the action.

SP Haruna Mohammed, police spokesperson in Anambra said the corpse has been exhumed and deposited in a morgue, while the suspect has been arrested.

Celebrated Kenyan gynaecologist dies of COVID-19 complications at 38

Renowned obstetrician-gynaecologist Dr. Doreen Lugaliki has passed on aged 38.

Dr. Lugaliki succumbed to COVID-19 complications on Thursday at the Aga Khan University Hospital in Nairobi after being admitted at the facility for two days.

The Kenya Medical Practitioners, Pharmacists and Dentists’ Union (KMPDU) announced their colleague’s demise on Facebook on Friday, July 10.

“We have lost a hard working obstetrician/gynecologist, a mother, a friend and a colleague to the devastating effects of Covid-19. Our condolences to the family and friends of Dr. Doreen Lugaliki,” said KMPDU on their official Facebook page.

Italy bans entry from 13 countries over coronavirus fears

Italy has banned entry to people coming from 13 countries that it said presented an excessive rate of COVID-19 infections.

The list compiled by the health ministry comprises Armenia, Bahrain, Bangladesh, Brazil, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Chile, Kuwait, North Macedonia, Moldova, Oman, Panama, Peru and Dominican Republic.

The ban affects anyone who has stayed in or travelled through these countries in the last 14 days, Health Minister Roberto Speranza said in a statement.

Outrage as Indian police kill suspect who murdered 8 officers

Indian police shot dead one of the country’s most wanted gangsters Friday just a day after his dramatic arrest, sparking accusations of a staged extra-judicial killing.

Officials said Vikas Dubey, detained for the killing of eight police officers, was shot as he tried to escape a police vehicle while being driven to his home city in the northern state of Uttar Pradesh.

Within hours of TV stations carrying images of his bloodstained body lying in a hospital, rights lawyers and activists alleged that police had killed Dubey to prevent him revealing his connections with powerful people.

“This is the most blatant case of extra-judicial killing. Dubey was a gangster terrorist who may have deserved to die. But (Uttar Pradesh) police have killed him to shut his mouth,” Supreme Court lawyer Prashant Bhushan wrote on Twitter.

Buhari approves suspension of EFCC boss Ibrahim Magu

Nigeria’s President Muhammadu Buhari has approved the suspension of the boss of the country’s anti-graft agency, Ibrahim Magu days after he appeared an investigative panel.

The Nigerian Government said Magu’s suspension is to “allow for unhindered inquiry” by the panel investigating allegations of corruption against the acting chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

“EFCC Director of Operations, Mohammed Umar, should take charge and oversee the activities of the Commission pending the conclusion of the ongoing investigation and further directives in that regards,” Umar Jibrilu Gwandu, Special Assistant on Media and Public Relations in the Office of the Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, said in a statement on Friday.

Police arrest woman for killing 83-year-old husband in Abia

One Mrs Rose Uwaga has been arrested by Abia State police command for allegedly strangling her 83-year-old husband, Alhaji Isa Uwaga, to death in Umuahia. It was gathered that the two aged couple had a disagreement, which degenerated into fisticuffs at their residence at Ohobo-Afara Umuahia.

A resident of the area said on condition of anonymity: “During the fight, the man allegedly grabbed a machete to scare the wife but the woman reportedly overpowered him.

 The machete fell off his hand and the woman, who is huge, pinned him down by the neck and strangled him to death.”

Another Lagos lawmaker, Tunde Braimoh is dead

Tunde Braimoh, the lawmaker representing Kosofe Constituency 2 in the Lagos State House of Assembly, is dead.

The former chairman of Kosofe Local Government died early Friday, two months to his 60th birthday.

Taiwo Fadipe, the chief press secretary to Kosofe Local Government said Braimoh died after two days of illness.

“He died at a hospital in Ikorodu Road. He died overnight after a two-day sickness,” Fadipe said.

R.a.p.e: Kano police threaten to prosecute uncompleted building's owners

The Kano State Police Command has threatened to prosecute owners of uncompleted buildings in the state following a rise in case of r.a.p.e, especially in the ancient city.

The police had recently disclosed that 33.3 per cent of r.a.p.e cases recorded in the state was perpetrated in uncompleted buildings

Speaking yesterday with journalists in Kano, the command’s spokesperson, DSP Abdullahi Haruna, said with the worrisome statistics on r.a.p.e, the command had deployed its men on patrol and surveillance to unoccupied buildings in Kano and its environs to tackle the ugly trend.

 “We are warning the general public that henceforth, any rape case perpetrated in an uncompleted building, the owner will be charged as an accomplice.

Seven persons arrested for multiple bank robberies in Ondo, Ekiti, others

Police operatives attached to the Special Tactical Squad have arrested a seven-man criminal gang that attacked and robbed three comm​ercial banks in Ondo and Ekiti between 2019 and 2020, killing innocent citizens including six policemen and carting away several millions of naira.

Investigation reveals that the armed robbers -- Tunbosun Ojo, Ismaila Ojo, Victor Oyeyemi, Dele Ariyo, Shola Oladimeji, Olubodun Folayemi and Adeniyi John – carried out the robbery of a commercial bank in Ile-oluji, Ondo State on February 7, 2020 where four policemen were killed.

Similarly, they were also involved in the robbery of a microfinance bank in Idanre, Ondo State in December 2019 and a commercial bank at Oye Ekiti, Ekiti State where two policemen lost their lives.

There was mild drama at Nigeria's House of Representatives on Thursday after the Lebanese Amabassador to Nigeria walked out of a meeting targeted at addressing the harassment of Nigerian domestic workers in Lebabnon.

Houssam Diab shortly after entering the conference room for the meeting with the House Commitee on Diaspora walked out, leaving the lawmakers shocked in the process.

The ambassador reportedly stormed out at 10:50am because he expected a close door meeting with the lawmakers but met government officials and journalists, who were there to cover the event.

90 percent of staff at Ghana education ministry test positive for Coronavirus

The Minister of Education Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh has confirmed that over 90 percent of the staff of his ministry have tested positive to the deadly Coronavirus.

Speaking to Kwame Sefa Kayi in an interview, Thursday, monitored by GhanaWeb, Dr. Prempeh revealed that mass testing was conducted at the ministry when it was made known that he had been infected with the virus.

He added, results from the testing showed that almost all staff of the ministry had contracted the virus with the majority of them being asymptomatic.

“After my second result came out as positive, testing was conducted on all staff at the ministry and the results showed that out of every 50 persons, about 45 had contracted the virus. Most of them are asymptomatic so they are isolating at home,” the minister disclosed.

Residents of Ebem, Ohafia town in Abia State where the Church of Satan was located, yesterday expressed their joy following its demolition by irate youths, claiming they were afraid to confront the founder because of alleged possession of evil powers that could kill anyone who challenged his activities.

The Church also known as Assemblies of Light Bearer Greater Church was founded by a young man identified as Ifekwe Udo.

He was alleged to have converted some youths of the area to his church by assisting them with motorcycles for commercial business (Okada) and other forms of empowerment.

Nigeria records 499 new cases of COVID-19, total now 30,748

Nigeria recorded 499 new cases of COVID-19 on Thursday, bringing total cases reported in the country to 30,748.

The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control said 12, 546 patients have been discharged upon treatment and recovery.

It added that 689 associated deaths have been recorded all over the country.

ASUU fumes as U.S. plans to deport 16,000 Nigerian students

The fate of over 16,000 Nigerian students in the United States is currently hanging in the balance as the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) moves to deport foreign students whose schools will switch to online classes due to the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic.

The development, however, has drawn the ire of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), which blamed the Federal Government for neglecting Nigeria’s educational system.

The Student and Exchange Visitor Programme (SEVP), which is run by ICE, in a new rule released on Monday, had said foreign nationals enrolled in U.S. educational institutions will have to transfer to in-person schools or take online classes outside the country. Otherwise, they will be deported. Also, the Department of State will no longer issue visas to students to attend schools that offer online classes only.

The statement reads in part: “The U.S. Department of State no longer issues visas to students enrolled in schools or programmes that are fully online for the fall semester nor will U.S. Customs and Border Protection permit such students to enter the United States.

South Korean mayor takes own life after s.e.xual harassment allegations

The mayor of Seoul, a contender to be South Korean next president and a former human rights lawyer, took his own life a day after he was accused of s.e.xual harassment, authorities said Friday.

Park Won-soon, whose body was recovered on a mountain in the capital, is by far the most high-profile politician to be implicated in a harassment case in South Korea, a highly patriarchal society where the #MeToo movement has led to the fall of scores of prominent men in multiple fields.

Park offered a general apology in a suicide note — handwritten with ink and brush — found at his official residence and released by city authorities.

“I’m sorry to everyone. I thank everyone who has been with me in my life,” he wrote, asking to be cremated and his ashes scattered at his parents’ graves. “I’m sorry to my family, to whom I only caused pain.”

Magistrate orders man to sweep court premises 3 hours for stealing food

A Life Camp Magistrates’ Court in Abuja, on Thursday, ordered a 30-year-old man, Yusuf Muazu, to sweep the court premises for three hours for stealing a bowl of food and a cup of cold water.

The Police charged Muazu of no fixed address for criminal trespass and theft.

The man who was ordered to sweep the court premises, Muazu, however, pleaded guilty to the charges and begged the court for leniency.

“I plead for mercy, I want the court to forgive me. I was really hungry and I entered the woman’s’ kitchen and saw a pot of food and I took some and also a cup of water.

President Buhari to sign revised 2020 budget today

President Muhammadu Buhari will today sign into law the revised 2020 budget passed by the National Assembly in June.

The Personal Assistant on New Media to the President, Bashr Ahmad, confirmed this on his tweeter handle in Abuja on Thursday.

While the Senate passed the budget on 10 June, the House of Representatives passed it on 11 June.

Both chambers approved a budget of N10.8 trillion, more than the N10.523 trillion proposed by Federal Executive Council (FEC) on 13 May.

When the dead tot was discovered in Bali it was being dragged away by a giant monitor lizard, local reports say.

Officers also found a blood-stained cloth, a bloody sanitary pad, and the remains of a burned cardboard at the location where the baby was found.

Police say the 17-year-old suspect dumped the baby out of fear of being found out about her situation.

Three drug smugglers with heroin cakes arrested in Vietnam

Police in Vietnam’s northern Dien Bien province have cracked down a major drug trafficking case, arresting three suspects and seizing 54 heroin cakes.

Vietnam News Agency reported on Thursday that the authorities caught a man trading in the drug weighing nearly 19 kg in Dien Bien’s Muong Cha District on Tuesday night.

From his confession, the police arrested two other members of the ring, said the report.

A month ago, the authorities discovered the trans-provincial and transnational drug trafficking ring with a large amount of heroin traded from Laos to Dien Bien through northern Lai Chau and Lao Cai provinces before being sold to a third country.
