Sade Adu Karaoke Night to hold in Lagos

An exclusive Karaoke Night for Nigerian-British singer and songwriter, Sade Adu to honour the legendary singer on her birthday as she turns 61 on Thursday, January 16th, 2020 will take place in Lagos.

The Karaoke will come up at Shaunz Karaoke Bar, Lekki, Lagos.

Friends, family, and colleagues will come together to sing and enjoy their favorite Sade Adu songs.

Sade Adu began her career as a backup singer for the band Pride, then split from the band with guitarist Stuart Matthewman in 1983 to form her own band, called Sade. They recorded their first album in just six weeks and released it to great success in July 1984.

NFVCB stops ‘Sugar Rush’ from showing in cinemas

The National Film and Video Censors Board (NFVCB) has ordered that the screening of ‘Sugar Rush’ in cinemas be halted.

In a statement released on its Facebook page, the board said the temporary approval given for the movie exhibition has expired.

“It has come to our notice that #BringBackSugarRush is currently gaining momentum on Twitter with many speculating a ban on the movie ‘Sugar Rush’ and presuming the supposed action as a sign of government’s intention to stifle creativity,” it said.

Bishop Oyedepo blows hot over millions stolen by church officials

Millions of naira allegedly stolen by some highly placed officials of the Living Faith Church Worldwide, a.k.a. Winners Chapel, drew the presiding Bishop of the church, Dr. David Oyedepo, into a rage at the empowerment summit organised for ordained workers of the church last Saturday.

The annual event, which is usually attended by pastors, zonal ministers and their assistants, deacons, ushers and other ordained workers of the church, where they are acquainted with the church’s programme for the year, was presided over by Oyedepo, while his deputy, Bishop David Abioye, was also in attendance. Both men ministered powerfully. Oyedepo ministered on service, while Abioye spoke on consistency in service.

Meghan Markle signs deal with Disney

Meghan Markle has signed a voiceover deal with Disney in return for a donation to an elephant charity.

The Duchess of Sussex recorded the voiceover before the royal couple left for their six-week break to Canada to celebrate Christmas.

The signing was in return for a donation to Elephants Without Borders, an organisation dedicated to conserving wildlife and helps protect the animals from poaching, according to The Times.

It comes after Prince Harry and Meghan announced on Wednesday their intention to step down as senior royals.

Face of the fourth Brit who died in the airline that was taken down by Iran

The fourth British victim of the plane crash in Iran has been named as 17-year-old Arad Zarei.

The teenager, was born in Twickenham, southwest London, where he grew up before moving to Canada to live with his father. He was on board the Ukranian International Airlines flight 752 as it came down killing all 176 people on board.

Arad died alongside three other Brits, Sam Zokaei, Mohammad Reza Kadkhoda-Zadeh and Saeed Tahmasebi.

It also praised Tehran for cooperating with an 'objective' investigation.

Singer Jaywon has narrated how he was robbed at a club in Bodija, Ibadan last night.

Writing on Instagram about how people should stay far from the club (club sluggers), Jaywon said he was robbed alongside his nephew right inside the club premises. He claimed a report was made to the club manager and he fought them instead.

Gunmen kidnap wife of 'Jigawa lawmaker at home'

Police have confirmed the abduction of a housewife in Jahun Local Government Area of Jigawa.

A security source said the woman is the wife of a Jigawa State Assembly member representing Miga constituency, Haruna Dangyatun.

SP Abdu Jinjiri, the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) in the state, said the victim, Hajiya Zahra’u Haruna, was kidnapped by three gunmen on Saturday about 4 a.m. at Dangyatum village.

“Today at about 4 a.m., a housewife named Zahra’u Haruna, was kidnapped by unknown gunmen in Dangyatum village in Miga local government area. Three unknown men came to the residence of the victim with guns and cutlasses and took her to unknown destination. But the police are already giving the suspects a hot chase,” Jinjiri said.

Tanker loaded with PMS to the brim splits and burns two cars, disrupts traffic flow

A tanker loaded with 33,000 litres of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) leaked some of the inflammable product it was conveying around Ajileti, on Idiroko road, Ogun, causing fire that burnt two vehicles completely.

The Idiroko unit Command of Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Mr Akinwunmi Olaluwoye, disclosed this on Saturday in Ota, Ogun.

He said the accident happened at about 4.30 p.m. on Friday.

Olaluwoye explained that the tanker was loaded with PMS and filled to the brim which leaked and caused the fire. The unit commander said that no life was lost in the incident but the development disrupted traffic flow in Ajeleti area on Idiroko road.

The Kano State Hisbah Operatives has arrested over 32 suspected prostitutes within and around the city.

The Operatives, who were believed to have acted on intelligence report, launched a combat operation on several suspected dark spots across the city to apprehend suspected sex hawkers.

Addressing the suspects at Hisba headquarters on Friday, Shaikh Haruna Muhammad Sandi Ibn Sina, Director General, Kano Hisba Board, ordered a high profile investigation to establish the complicity of all the suspects.

A woman posed as a teenage boy to sexually assault up to 50 girls as young as 14 after grooming them online, police have revealed today.

Gemma Watts, 21, travelled the country by train to meet the youngsters, who believed they were in a relationship with a boy close to their own age.

Disguised with her long hair tied into a bun and wearing a baseball cap, baggy jogging bottoms and a hoodie, Watts convinced them she was 16-year-old "Jake Waton".

First person dies from mysterious virus in China

A 61-year-old man has died from pneumonia in the central Chinese city of Wuhan in an outbreak of a yet to be identified virus while seven others are in critical condition, Wuhan health authorities say.

In total 41 people have been diagnosed with the pathogen, which preliminary lab tests cited by Chinese state media earlier this week pointed to a new type of coronavirus, the Wuhan Municipal Health Commission said on Saturday in a statement on its website.

Two of them have been discharged from hospital and the rest are in stable condition, while 739 people deemed to have been in close contact with the patients have been cleared, it said.

JAMB makes U-turn on use of NIN for 2020 exams

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has announced the suspension of the use of National Identification Number for registration for the 2020 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination UTME.

This was revealed by JAMB Registrar, Ishaq Oloyede, while briefing journalists in Abuja on Saturday.

The latest announcement came after the board last year said from 2020, candidates will register for its examinations with their national ID numbers to solve the challenges of multiple registrations.

A trader on Saturday slumped and was rushed to hospital after watching his shop ruined by fire.

The trader whose identity could not be ascertained as of press time reportedly shouted, “I am finished” and collapsed.

“Bystanders rushed him to the hospital. We don’t know his state of health as of now, the incident occurred around 1.30am on Saturday when all of us got a text message that the market was on fire and rushed to the place.”

Accused serial killer of women in Port Harcourt, Gracious David West was dragged to mortuaries to identify the bodies of seven out the 19 people he killed while on the prowl.

This came to light on Friday at his trial when one of investigating police officers of SARS Port Harcourt, presented West’s statement affirming the morbid visits.

The IPO Sergeant Ogbomudia Timi Engbokuru presented the statement and two others to the court.

David-West admitted the statements belonged to him.

Harry's and Meghan's wax figures removed from Madame Tussauds London's royal exhibit

Madame Tussauds London is giving the royal boot to the wax figures of Prince Harry and Meghan, the Duchess of Sussex, less than 24 hours after the couple announced plans to take a "step back" from their roles as senior members of the British royal family.

The museum said in a statement Thursday that the waxworks of the Duke and Duchess of Sussex had been removed from its display to "mirror their progressive new role within the Royal institution."

"Alongside the rest of the world, we are reacting to the surprising news that the Duke and Duchess of Sussex will be stepping back as senior Royals," said Steve Davies, the museum's general manager.

US rapper 5th Ward Weebie dies at 42

Rapper 5th Ward Weebie, who was widely described as a driving force in New Orleans’ bounce music scene, died from heart surgery complications on Thursday.

The 42-year-old artist was born Jerome Cosey and his most popular songs included “Let Me find out" and “F--k Katrina." He also appeared in Drake’s 2018 hit “Nice for What."

“It broke my heart to learn that Jerome Cosey — our 5th Ward Weebie — has passed,” Mayor LaToya Cantrell said in an Instagram post Thursday.

“He was an iconic personality, a New Orleans legend, and a beloved friend,” she wrote. "He was the Bounce King, who showed us how to move, how to love, and how to bring passion and humanity to everything we do.”



Steve McQueen’s 1968 Ford Mustang sells for $3.4m

The 1968 Ford Mustang GT that Steve McQueen drove in the classic car chase from the movie “Bullitt, one of the most famed cars from American cinema, sold for a record $3.4 million at auction in Florida on Friday, Mecum Auctions said.

It was the highest price ever paid for a Ford Mustang at auction, according to David Morton, marketing manager for the auction house in Kissimmee, near Orlando. The buyer has not been publicly identified.

“The hammer dropped at $3.4 million, but with buyers’ fees, the total cost is $3.74 million,” he said, adding it shattered the auction house’s previous record set last year of $2.2 million.

Trump wades into British Monarchy's royal fallout

Donald Trump waded into the British monarchy's royal fallout on Friday, expressing his sympathy for Queen Elizabeth II and calling Harry and Meghan's decision to step back from royal duties 'sad'.

Speaking on Fox News' 'The Ingraham Angle', the President voiced his disappointment at the Duke and Duchess of Sussex's bombshell announcement Wednesday that they're quitting public life and will now work to become financially independent from the Royal Family.

When asked if he had any advice for how to deal with the 'rogue royals', Trump replied: 'I think it’s sad. I do. I think it’s sad. She’s a great woman,' he said, appearing to reference Queen Elizabeth. 'She’s never made a mistake if you look. I mean, she’s had like a flawless time.'

Host Laura Ingraham then asked Trump if he believed Meghan and Harry should return to Buckingham Palace. Trump insisted he didn't 'want to get into the whole thing', but said: 'I just have such respect for the Queen, I don’t think this should be happening to her.'

Iran ADMITS shooting down Ukrainian plane that killed 176 people on board

Iranian state TV, citing a military statement, says the country 'unintentionally' shot down a Ukrainian jetliner, killing all 176 aboard, after mistaking the aircraft for a hostile, enemy target.

The statement came Saturday morning, and blamed 'human error' for shooting down the plane on Tuesday.

Specifically, Iranian officials says the aircraft 'took the flying posture and altitude of an enemy target' as it neared the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps base and attending personal didn't recognize it as a passenger plane.

'Under these circumstances, because of human error, [the plane] came under fire,' the statement read, according to the New York Times.

Nigerian Author, Chukwuemeka Ike is dead

Chukwuemeka Ike, one of Nigeria’s most read novelists, has died.

Ike died on Thursday in Anambra State at the age of 88.

The writer achieved acclaim for his works such as Toads for Supper, his first work published in 1965, The Naked Gods (1970), The Potter’s Wheel (1973), Sunset at Dawn (1976), Expo ’77 (1980), The Bottled Leopard (1985), Our Children Are Coming (1990) among others.

He served as an academic in various roles including as a registrar at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, and a visiting professor at the University of Jos.

Boy called cheeky monkey by mom is suspected to have been murdered hours after 2nd birthday

The two-year-old boy who is suspected to have been murdered hours after celebrating his second birthday has been pictured for the first time.

Kiegon O'Brien, who was described by his mother as a 'cheeky monkey', died yesterday after being rushed to hospital from a property in Doncaster, South Yorkshire on January 8.

Following his death, a 36-year-old man and 32-year-old woman, both from the Adwick area of Doncaster were arrested on suspicion of murder and are currently being questioned by detectives.

Pictures taken at the scene this morning showed a police car parked outside the terraced property where the suspected murder is believed to have taken place.

Plane crash: Lufthansa bans Tehran flights

Lufthansa on Friday announced that all flights to and from Tehran have been cancelled until January 20, following suggestions that Iran may have mistakenly shot down a Ukrainian passenger plane earlier this week.

The German group, which also owns Austrian Airlines, said the flight ban was “due to the unclear security situation for the airspace around Tehran airport”.

All 176 people on board died when the Ukrainian International Airlines plane went down near Tehran on Wednesday, shortly after Iran launched missiles at US forces in Iraq over the killing of a top Iranian general.

A former lawmaker representing Kaduna Central Senatorial District, Senator Shehu Sani, has accused the Federal Government of attempting to silence him over his criticism of the regime led by the President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), using fronts.

Boko Haram slaughters three, abducts seven on Maiduguri-Damaturu highway

Three passengers were reportedly slaughtered and seven others abducted by suspected members of Boko Haram who laid siege on Maiduguri-Damaturu highway.

According to the security sources, who preferred anonymity, the incident happened between Jakana -Auno at about 11:15a.m. on Thursday.

 It was learnt that three persons were slaughtered and their corpses left beside the highway around Auno village.

It was also learnt that seven passengers were forcefully taken away by the insurgents at the same spot where the three persons were killed.

Dog kills woman in Switzerland

A woman was killed at a dog training centre in western Switzerland this week after her Malinois attacked her, prosecutors confirmed Friday, saying the autopsy showed she had bled to death.

The 45-year-old woman was found dead inside a dog training pen in Auboranges in the canton of Fribourg on Tuesday, with her visibly aggressive Malinois standing over her body.

In a statement issued on Wednesday, police said the dog had first blocked officers and others from approaching the woman, and had subsequently attacked and mauled a female police officer before being shot to death by her partner.

The authorities were initially hesitant to speculate on the cause of death, but on Friday they announced that the autopsy had shown she had suffered multiple serious wounds to her arms.
