Lagos to reward 20 best teachers with vehicles

Twenty outstanding teachers in public schools in Lagos State will be acknowledged and rewarded with brand new vehicle each as part of efforts to motivate teachers in the state.

The State Governor, Mr Babajide Sanwo-Olu, said this on Saturday during the formal launch and graduation ceremony of Eko Excel Pre-Service Professional Development and Technology Training Programme in Ikeja, Lagos.

The governor, who promised that the selection process would be transparent, said there was nothing too big to motivate teachers with and that their reward should not be left to be got in heaven only.

FUOYE workers threaten indefinite strike

The Non Academic Staff Union and the Senior Staff Association at the Federal University Oye-Ekiti, Ekiti State are threatening to down tools if the School Management does not reverse the backdoor recruitment, pay outstanding allowances and bonuses, and give due promotion to deserving members.

The Members of the Union staged a protest at the gate of the University, where they restricted vehicular movements in the institution as they closed one of the gates of the school.

Responding to the demands by members of the Union, the Vice chancellor of the University, Prof Kayode Soremekun debunked claims by the members of the union on issues raised, stressing that due promotion of Staff is a norm in the public service, but since the establishment of the University, workers of the institution refused to sit for promotion examinations and his insistence on this, is the reason for the protest by NASU and SSANU.

Enugu government begins demolition of structures encroaching on Akanu Ibiam Int’l Airport

Enugu state government has commenced demolition of illegal structures that may pose threat to the Akanu Ibiam International Airport.

This according to the state government is in line with the requests made to ensure illegal buildings at the airport are removed and relocation of the Oye-Emeke market away from the airport scene.

Addressing newsmen during the demolition, which was carried out by the Enugu Capital Territory Development Authority (ECTDA), led by its Executive Chairman, Dr. Josef Umunnakwe Onoh, in company of officials of the Federal Airport Authority of Nigeria (FAAN), the Commissioner for Information, Nnanyelugo Chidi Aroh, stated that the exercise was in response to the safety concerns raised by the federal government about the airport.

DSS allegedly arrests young journalist, Ayoola Babalola over article on Buhari

The Department of State Services (DSS) has secretly arrested a young journalist, Ayoola Babalola, it has been claimed.

DSS also charged him to court in discreet and Babalola is currently in prison.

Outspoken lawyer cum rights activist, Inibehe Effiong, made the revelation on Twitter.

Effiong disclosed that Babalola was arrested over articles about President Muhammadu Buhari, national chairman of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), Bola Tinunu, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and #RevolutionNow convener, Omoyele Sowore.

Police Inspector found dead inside patrol van in Delta

Oolloh-Ogwashi-uku, a small village close to Ogwash-uku, Aniocha South Local Government Area, Delta State, has been thrown into confusion as an inspector of Police attached to the State Command was found dead inside a patrol van in the area.

The Police patrol team which was at a checkpoint along Ogwashi-Uku axis of the Asaba-Ughelli expressway were reportedly taken unaware by the suspected assailant(s) who were targeting their riffles.

The Vanguard gathered that the deceased who was simply identified as Williams was found in the pool of his own blood with multiple cuts on his body.

22 dead, over 1,100 hurt from earthquake in Turkey

The death toll from a strong earthquake that rocked eastern Turkey climbed to 22 on Saturday as rescue crews searched for people who remained trapped under the rubble of collapsed buildings, officials said.

Speaking at a televised news conference near the epicenter of the quake in Elazig province, Interior Minister Suleyman Soylu said 18 people were killed in Elazig and four in neighboring Malatya.

Some 1,103 people were injured, with 34 of them in intensive care but not in critical condition, Health Minister Fahrettin Koca said.

UI offers admission to 4,359 out of 19,482

The Senate of the University of Ibadan has approved the provisional offer of undergraduate admission to 4,359 candidates for the 2019/2020 academic session.

The Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Idowu Olayinka, who presided over the emergency Senate meeting, said that out of this figure, 4,100 had been processed through JAMB while about 3, 709 had paid the acceptance fee for admission.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the figures were contained in a release by the Senate of the university and made available to newsmen in Ibadan on Friday,

According to the Vice-Chancellor, while 19, 482 sat for the post UTME examination of the premier university, 12, 450 scored 50 per cent and above and were subjected to cut-off marks set for courses to select the best of the applicants.

The senate of the institution stated that it would continue to maintain impeccable and flawless admission procedures.

62 year-old doctor dies from coronavirus nine days after contracting deadly disease

A doctor has died from coronavirus nine days after getting infected with the deadly virus in China.

Liang Wudong, 62, from Hubei Province, was suspected of contracting the disease on January 16 at Hubei Provincial Hospital of Integrated Chinese and Western Medicine and was transferred to the Jinyintan Hospital two days later.

The former ENT medic, who retired from the profession last June, died this morning.

He complained of tightening of the chest and feeling flustered when he was admitted to the hospital.

Navy seizes vessel with illegally refined diesel

Six crew members of a nine – tanker vessel laden with poorly Automated Gasoline Oil are cooling their heels in the custody of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission.

Arrested by the Navy along the waterways of Brass, on the 9th of January, the suspects were in a vessel containing one million litres of petroleum products identified as illegally refined diesel.

Ovieteme George reports that one after another, the six suspects were made to disembark from the vessel “MV Gratitude” laden with one million litres of a product identified as illegally refined diesel.

The Commanding Officer Forward Operating Base, Commodore Suleiman Ibrahim made a juxtaposition of samples of petroleum products.

“MV Gratitude” the vessel conveying the product and the Six -Man crew have been handed over to the Economic And Financial Crimes Commission.

Actor Tom Sizemore 'arrested for DUI and being in possession of a controlled substance'

Saving Private Ryan star Tom Sizemore has reportedly been arrested for a DUI and being in possession of a controlled substance.

The 58-year-old actor was taken in on Thursday morning at 2.30am in Gelndale, California, TMZ reported.

The actor was initially pulled over by cops for an "unsafe lane change".

Once police conducted a search, they found narcotics on him. TMZ also claim the actor showed signs of being under the influence.

Jeff Bezos' girlfriend disclosed their affair in texts to her brother who sold them for $200k

Federal prosecutors in Manhattan have evidence that the brother of Jeff Bezos' girlfriend provided his intimate text messages to her sibling, who sold them to the National Enquirer, according to a new report.

Prosecutors have obtained documents including a May 10, 2018 text message sent from the phone of Bezos' girlfriend Lauren Sanchez to her brother Michael Sanchez, containing her intimates texts with Bezos, the Wall Street Journal reported.

The Journal said it had reviewed the text messages as well as a $200,000 payment Michael Sanchez received from the Enquirer under an October 2018 contract.

76 persons test positive to Lassa fever in Edo

The Commissioner for Health in Edo State, Dr Patrick Okundia, on Friday, in Benin said 76 out of 175 suspected cases of Lassa fever tested positive to the virus.

Okundia made this known during a Lassa fever committee meeting, chaired by the State Deputy Governor, Mr Philip Shaibu, and representative of the World Health Organization.

“A total of 76 suspected cases of Lassa fever were confirmed yesterday (Thursday) in the state and they are currently on admission in the Irrua Specialist Teaching Hospital.

“We have not recorded any new death but have also reduced our case fatality rate to less than 10 per cent. The number of cases in the ward now is 34, and we have discharge over 28 patients that have been fully treated and cured,” he said.

Mystery man helps police solve murder case and disappeared afterwards

Policemen at Surulere Police Station in Ilorin, Kwara are yet to recover from the shock they got, after a mysterious man walked into their station to report the murder of a truck driver, whom he identified as Emmanuel Adegoke.

The mysterious man whose identity could not be identified, according to New Telegraph, gave the police vivid explanation of what led to Adegoke's death, the killer, and other information that helped the police establish the truth.

During his time at the station, the stranger was also said to have given phone numbers of the family members of the victim to the police, after which he was nowhere to be found.

21-year-old man who concentrates on stealing from churches finally arrested

Police operatives from Ipaja Division of the Lagos Command led by CSP Tokumbo Abaniwonda, have arrested a 21-year old man, who confessed that he only goes to churches to steal properties and not for prayers.

Tokunbo Lekan, who hails from Ogun State, said he was trained as a mechanic but had to abandon it for stealing when he was not getting enough work to do and to solve his needs and he then focused on stealing in various churches to survive.

However, he was arrested after he sneaked inside Anglican Church of Triumphant located at Obadiah Craig Street, Falola in Ipaja area of Lagos, at night, carted away some properties and escaped.

Some of the properties Lekan stole included: power generating set, electric wire, welding machine and other items worth about N400,000 belonging to the Church.

Edo beef worsens! Vehicles, chairs, canopies set ablaze at Oshiomhole’s Edo rally

The face-off between Governor Godwin Obaseki of Edo State and the national chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Comrade Adams Oshiomhole, got messier on Saturday, as unidentified thugs overnight set ablaze vehicles, canopies and chairs parked at the venue to be used for a political rally in Auchi, Estako West local government area.

The rally which was to hold at an open ground owned by a private individual, was said to have been organised by Oshiomhole to receive some defectors into the APC.

Sources had it that the suspected thugs who invaded the venue at about 2 am, shot sporadically before they set ablaze over 1000 chairs, the podium, several canopies and two vehicles.

It was learnt that heavy security was being deployed to the area to forestall further attack.

Several killed as Iraqi forces raid Baghdad protest camp

Iraqi security forces raided Baghdad’s main protest site on Saturday and tried to eject protesters in southern cities, firing tear gas and bullets killing four people and wounding dozens more, police and medical sources said.

The new push to end the sit-ins and restore order came hours after populist cleric Moqtada al-Sadr, who counts millions of supporters in Baghdad and the south, said he would halt his involvement in anti-government unrest.

Sadr’s supporters, who had bolstered the anti-government protesters and sometimes played a role in protecting them from attacks by security forces and unidentified gunmen, began withdrawing from sit-ins early on Saturday after Sadr’s announcement.

Kenyan Catholic catechist commits suicide... leaves behind a note

A Catholic catechist from Rongo, Migori County, Kenya on Monday mid-morning, January 20, committed suicide over claims that his elder brother was frustrating and mistreating him in their parents’ homestead.

Paul Ochuodho Mbogo’s body was found hanging from a rope tied to the roof of his house.

Ochuodho’s mother, Cecilia Adoyo Mbogo, said she was shocked to be told by the deceased’s other siblings that Ochuodho had been found dead in his house at Mitwe area in Rakwaro, Rongo Sub-County.

Ochuodho wrote, in his suicide note, which has since been taken by police, that his elder brother constantly insulted him for “being a man of strong faith”.

How NIS prevented trafficking of nine girls

The Operatives of Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS), Murtala Mohammed International Airport (MMIA), Command in Lagos, has rescued another 9 girls who were to be trafficked to Lebanon, Cairo, Dubai and India on Ethiopian, Peace, Egypt and East Airlines.

The service Public Relations Officer, DCI Sunday James, made this known in statement on Saturday in Lagos.

According to him, four of the girls claimed to be traveling for employment without knowing their employers nor aware of the nature of job they were going for.

Investors storm Oko Oloyun’s office to demand their money

Tens of Lagosians have stormed the LASU Road office of late Alhaji Fatai Yusuf, popularly known as Oko Oloyun, to demand the money they invested in his Ponzi scheme.

Oko Oloyun, a popular Lagos-based trado-medical expert, was murdered on Thursday around 4:30pm on the road while travelling to Iseyin, Oyo State.

Following his demise, people who invested money in his Ponzi scheme, known as “Option C” stormed the Head office of his company to demand how to retrieve their money.

The investors were more confused as his two offices at Egba Idowu along Igando road in Lagos were shut with no one to provide information.

Bird flies 6, 948kms from Finland to Bondo-Kenya

A rare migratory bird has landed in Kenya after flying a distance of 6,948 kilometers from Finland.

The migratory bird known as Osprey was spotted in West Imbo Location, Usalu Village, Bondo Sub County in Siaya County.

According to the Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS), the bird has flown to Kenya, covering a distance of 6,948 kilometres or 4,317 miles.

A member of the community, Walter Oloo, spotted the bird on January 20, 2020 and reported to KWS Siaya County team.

Nollywood actor, Mike Ezuruonye, has undergone eye surgery. The actor revealed this via his Instagram page that he operated his eyes due to over exposure to harsh movie production lights.

Sharing a photo after the surgery,  he wrote;

Expert says coronavirus is spread through eyes as killer disease 'shuts down China'

A top medic who contracted Coronavirus says the deadly respiratory disease is so contagious it can be transmitted through the eyes.

Wang Guangfa, who was a leading figure in helping China fight Sars in 2003, himself caught the virus but has since recovered.

Mr Wang says he believes he became infected because he did not have protective eyewear.

The respiratory specialist at Beijing’s Peking University First Hospital had reportedly been ridiculed in some parts of the media after he contracted the disease despite saying it was “preventable and controllable” two weeks ago.

CAN declares National fasting for Nigeria

The leadership of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) has declared Friday, 31st January to 2nd February 2020 as days for special fasting and prayer for Nigeria in all churches, home and abroad.

According to a statement by the chairman of CAN, His Eminence Dr. Samson Ayokunle, the fasting is for the gruesome killing of innocent Nigerians to stop.

Dr. Ayokunle further stated that this fasting is for the Nigerian government to develop the capacity to overcome the criminals troubling the nation.

Court remands pastor in prison for N23m fraud

Justice I. M. Sani of the Federal High Court sitting in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, has ordered that Mercy Daniel Ogbonaya, a pastor, be remanded at the Port Harcourt Correctional Centre for obtaining N23m by false pretences.

The offence is contrary to Section 1 (1) (a) of the Advance Fee Fraud and Other Related Offences Act and punishable under Section 1(3) of the same Act.

According to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, the accused will remain at the correctional centre until the date of the next hearing.

Man arrested for killing another man with just a slap

The Anambra state police command has arrested a man who simply slapped another man, which led to his instant death.

The incident happened last night in  Abakeleke street Awka, the capital city of Anambra State.

 According to the Facebook user, the man in red is the one responsible for the death of the man in white. Facebook user Benneth Odife puts it this way;

Shaking teen weeps in dock as he's cleared of killing dad with one punch

A teenager has been cleared of killing a dad-of-four who died after he was punched when he tried to stop a man from being assaulted.

Philip James Long was out celebrating his wedding anniversary with his wife in Wrexham when he stepped in and acted as a peacemaker as a group of young people were fighting.

The 36-year-old had tried to stop a woman from hitting a man when he was punched and hit his head on the floor. He died from his injuries.

Matthew Curtis, 18, from Gwersyllt, was cleared of Mr Long's manslaughter at Mold Crown Court on Thursday.

Turkey could introduce new law allowing r.a.p.i.s.t.s to marry their underage victims

Turkey could introduce a new law allowing men to avoid prosecution if they marry girls they've r.a.p.e.d or had underage s.e.x with.

The "marry your rapist" bill is set to be introduced to parliament at the end of the month.

It has outraged women's rights campaigners who say the law will pave the way for child exploitation and legitimise child marriage and statutory r.a,p,e.

A similar bill failed in 2016 following international outrage.

Gunman opens fire in German town, killing six

Six people have died and others wounded following a shooting in southwest Germany, police said on Friday.

The number of deaths was confirmed by local police. A suspect has been arrested, police added, saying there were no indications of any further suspects.

The shooting occurred in the town of Rot am See in the federal state of Baden-Wuerttemberg, while police in the nearby town of Aalen said the incident appeared to be linked to a "personal relationship".

"Police are working on the basis that the perpetrator knew the victims and that some were direct relatives," said Al Jazeera's Dominic Kane, reporting from Berlin.

NDLEA arrests 110 suspected drug traffickers at Murtala Muhammed International Airport

The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA) Command, Lagos, said it arrested 101 suspected drug traffickers in 2019.

NDLEA Commander, Garba Ahmadu, made the disclosure at a media briefing in Lagos.

Ahmadu explained that 87 were males and 14 females, while total seizure cases of 76 were recorded in the period under review.

He said there was increase in the number of arrests in 2019 compared to 2018 when 93 persons were arrested.

Meghan and Harry's bid to trademark Sussex Royal blocked by Australian doctor

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle's bid to trademark Sussex Royal has hit a road block after a doctor in Australia blocked their application.

The couple, who stepped down as 'senior royals' in dramatic fashion this month, plan to use the name to launch their foundation and other branded goods.

It is not known why Mr Worcester, who is believed to have worked as an NHS doctor from 2011 until 2013, filed the opposition.

A formal 'notice of threatened opposition' was registered this week, according to the government's Intellectual Property Office.

Rapper YG arrested on robbery charges

Rapper YG was arrested early today at his Southern California home on robbery charges, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department.

Sheriff's deputies arrived at the "Go Loko" artist's residence in LA's San Fernando Valley with a search warrant related to an on-going criminal investigation involving a robbery. Deputies took him into custody after inspecting the home, Sheriff's officials announced in a statement.

YG, 29, also known as Keenon Jackson, is being held on $250,000 bail at the Men's Central Jail.

He is expected in court for arraignment on Jan. 28.

YG is slated to perform in a tribute to Nipsey Hussle with John Legend, DJ Khaled, Meek Mill and others at the Grammy Awards this Sunday. Will he still make it?

Parents of abducted and murdered Daciya Dalep, a 200 level student of the University of Maiduguri, have called on the federal government to intensify efforts towards safe guarding the lives of Nigerians.

Mr Dalep was killed by the Boko Haram terrorist group and a video posted on the Internet which showed the gruesome murder.

Mr Dalep was kidnapped two weeks ago along Maduguri road while returning to school from Plateau, his home state after Christmas and New Year celebrations.

Ile Arugbo: Kwara government, Saraki agree to settle out of court

Kwara state government and the former President of the Senate, Bukola Saraki, as well as all other parties involved in the Ile Arugbo demolition case have agreed to settle out of court.

At the resumed hearing, counsel to Asa Investment Limited, AbdulAzeez Ibrahim informed the court that he has initiated the out of court settlement which the five defendants also agreed to.

They are now to meet on Monday for the commencement of the settlement.

Justice Abiodun Adebara adjourned the case to the 2nd of March for report of the settlement.

Bride forced to wear wig for wedding after hairdresser cousin 'ruins' her hair

A bride was forced to splash out more than £1,000 to buy a wig to wear on her wedding day after her hairdresser cousin "ruined her hair".

The woman was devastated when her plans for lavish long locks - courtesy of some new extensions - resulted in her having to have all her hair cut off.

Her cousin, a trainee hairdresser, offered to create her new look but, when things went south and she was asked to pay to fix the damage she'd caused, she refused.
