Mum charged for leaving newborn with umbilical cord to die

A mother is accused of abandoning her newborn baby and leaving her to die in a vacant lot in freezing temperatures.

Baby Sophie Grace Hadden was found dead with her umbilical cord still attached on November 12 last year.

Mum Nicole Layman, 22, from Port Jervis, New York, is now facing second-degree murder charges.

The baby, who was naked except for a blanket in which she had been wrapped, was found by a passerby on the corner of Hornbeck Avenue and Brooklyn Street.

US border guard Ezequiel Almodovar, 39,  was found dead at home on Thursday along with wife, Marielis Soto, 38, and two teen sons, Ezequiel, 16, and Gabriel, 12.

Officers at the Orange County Seriff's Office were alerted after receiving a report that some of the family members had not been seen since last week.

Sheriff John Mina said there is no threat to the community and no further suspects.

Coronavirus claims first European victim as man dies in Italy

A 78-year-old man has become the first European person to die after being infected with the coronavirus, health authorities said today.

The man, named by Italian news agency Ansa as retired bricklayer Adriano Trevisan, died at a hospital in Padua, northern Italy.

Mr Trevisan, from the village of Vo' Euganeo near Padua, had recovered some 10 days earlier from an unrelated health issue, Italy's health minister said.

As his health deteriorated earlier this week, he was admitted to hospital along with another person, aged 67, who had tested positive for COVID-19, the disease caused by the virus.

Hanan Buhari responds to law suit against her by Nigerian detained for allegedly using her old sim card

Hanan Buhari, daughter of President Muhammadu Buhari has opened up on allegations that the Department of State Services detained a trader, Anthony Okolie, for 10 weeks for using a telephone line that was earlier used by her.

According to her, though she had received complaints from relatives that someone was using her old line to solicit money, she never reported the matter to the DSS.

Hanan said this in a counter-affidavit to the originating motion filed by Okolie.

Okolie had sued the DSS, Hanan and company, MTN for his 10-week ordeal in the security services’ detention.

Mother, daughter burnt as tanker explodes in Ogun

A woman, her daughter and a vulcaniser suffered varying degrees of burns after a petrol-laden tanker fell and exploded at Atatun, Ijaiye-Tutun, in Abeokuta on Friday evening.

According to an eyewitness, the victims were immediately rushed to the Federal Medical Centre, Idi-Aba, Abeokuta.

No fewer than five houses and several shops were burnt in the incident.

An eye witness, who simply identified herself as Mrs Olufote, told newsmen that the incident happened when a fuel tanker suffered a flat tyre.

Two women burnt in Anambra kerosene explosion

Two women were feared burnt in a kerosene explosion at their various houses in Igboukwu, Aguata local government area of Anambra State.

The incident reportedly occurred when the victims poured the kerosene bought from the market but suspected to be adulterated inside their lanterns.

The Nation gathered that the explosion affected parts of their houses.

The police spokesperson, Haruna Mohammed, who confirmed the incident, said the suspect has been arrested.

Coronavirus: South Korea confirms huge rise in cases

South Korea says the number of new coronavirus cases in the country has more than doubled in one day. Officials said on Saturday that 229 new cases had been confirmed since Friday, raising the total to 433.

Vice Health Minister Kim Gang-lip said the outbreak had entered "a serious new phase".

Many of the new cases are linked to a hospital and to a religious group near the south-eastern city of Daegu, authorities have said.

Two patients in South Korea have died so far and there are fears the number will rise.

Pastor invited for family deliverance dies in his sleep

A pastor, who is to perform a deliverance on a family in Anambra State, died in his sleep hours before the exercise.

It was gathered that the pastor was invited to Anambra from Warri, Delta State.

A member of the family, who pleaded anonymity, said that the development was a rude shock to everybody.

The Christian Association of Nigeria on Friday declared January 21 of every year as its day of national prayers for the persecuted Christians in the country.

The decision was taken in honour of the  slain  CAN Chairman in the Michika Local Government of Adamawa State, Rev Lawan Andimi, and other victims of Boko Haram  and herdsmen attacks.

The resolution to honour Andimi, according to the President of CAN, Rev Samson Ayokunle, became imperative in honour of all the Christians being killed by  Boko Haram, herdsmen, and the bandits nationwide.

Car mechanic electrocuted by massive shock when he plugged in phone charger

A man has been killed and his girlfriend injured when when they both received electric shocks as he plugged in his mobile phone charger.

Kirill Matveev was electrocuted and his girlfriend Mira Polyshina who was stood next to him was unable to save him.

She was hit by a less severe shock and survived.

Police suspect that the electric cable on the charger was not properly insulated, but an investigation is now underway.

UK warns Nigerian students against fraud, freezes 95 accounts

The United Kingdom Government has warned Nigerians intending to study in Britain to desist from money laundering and other criminal activities.

The UK gave this warning on Friday in Abuja through the UK’s National Economic Crime Centre at a meeting, according to a statement from the Federal Ministry of Education.

The NECC said students were usually targeted through social media platforms for the use of their accounts for third party funds transfer, usually for a fee.

Daughter sues mum over rape allegation against dad

One Jessica Obinomeh and her mother, Sandra, have drawn a battle line at an Ogba magistrates’ court, Lagos State, over lingering family issues.

Obinomeh alleged that her mother and siblings tortured her with a hot iron, compelling her to lie that her father r3ped her.

The plot, according to the 20-year-old woman, was meant to shame her father who is based abroad, and his extended family.

But the mother debunked her claim, saying that she was tortured for stealing N345,000 from her (Sandra’s) account.

Two die as Police and robbers exchange gunfire in Abuja

The Police Command in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) on Friday killed two suspects during exchange of fire with armed robbers in Dawaki area.

The Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) in the FCT, DSP Anjuguri Manzah disclosed this in a statement in Abuja.

He said the armed robbery gang had engaged police operatives in a fierce gun duel at the robbery scene.

Manzah said the suspects were overpowered and dislodged by police operatives while responding to a distress call from the area.

Kaduna court frees 91 shiites after four years in detention

A Kaduna State High Court has discharged and acquitted 91 members of the Islamic Movement in Nigeria (IMN).

The presiding judge, Justice Hajaratu Gwada, acquitted the defendants of the charges filed against them by the state government in her judgement delivered on Friday.

The freed members of the Shiite group were arrested during a clash with soldiers in Zaria in December 2015.

They were arraigned on five counts of criminal conspiracy, unlawful assembly, culpable homicide, disturbance of public peace, and causing grievous hurt.

I remain the king of Iwoland, Oluwo reacts to his suspension

The Oluwo of Iwo, Oba Abdulrasheed Akanbi, says he remains the Oluwo of Iwoland despite his suspension by the Osun State Council of Traditional Rulers.

He said this in a post on his Instagram page on Friday.

The post was in a reaction to his suspension by the Osun State Traditional Council.

In the post, Oluwo attached a video, showing him partying and dancing to a song that states that he was not pained by “abuses”.

Suspected kidnappers camp uncovered in llorin.... thirteen female children rescued

Residents of Okoerin community in Ilorin West Local Government Area of Kwara on Friday uncovered a camp where suspected kidnappers camped some children.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the camp, a storey building, was uncovered when a woman was looking for her child.

Some of the residents along Okoerin road, off lbrahim Taiwo road, had gone to look for the child who went to dispose refuse under a bridge adjacent to the building.

When the place was uncovered, some people stormed the building and discovered 13 children already in captivity.

South Sudan rebel leader appointed vice president

South Sudan President Salva Kiir on Friday appointed rebel leader Riek Machar as vice president, after the two men finally agreed to form a long-delayed unity government -- a crucial step towards ending six years of war.

A presidential decree included "the appointment of the vice presidents and the dissolution of all institutions at national and state levels," Information Minister Michael Makuei told AFP.

The decree was read on state television, the South Sudan Broadcasting Corporation, appointing Machar as the first of five vice-presidents in a bloated cabinet to accommodate various warring parties.

We are not opening borders now, President Buhari tells neighbouring countries

President Muhammadu Buhari has said the partial closure of Nigeria’s land borders would remain in force.

He called on neighbouring countries affected negatively by the policy to be patient until the report of the tripartite committee made up of Nigeria, Benin and Niger Republic was ready.

Buhari spoke in Abuja when he received the President of Burkina Faso, Mr Roch Marc Christian Kabore, at the Presidential Villa.

Court jailed Edo chief for beating fellow chief

An Edo traditional Chief, Obamedo Ode, was on Thursday sentenced to two moths imprisonment by an Egor Magistrates’ Court in Benin, the state capital, for assaulting a fellow Chief, Edwin Onaiwu, by beating him with a stick.

The police prosecutor, Inspector Lucky Sunday, told the court that the convict committed the crime on 22 February, 2018, at Iguotor community, in Egor magisterial district.

According to the prosecutor, on the said date, Chief Ode came with thugs to unlawfully assault the complainant with a stick, causing him harm in the process.

Akwa Ibom shuts down college over students’ rampage after they leave DPO in critical condition

The Akwa Ibom State government has shut down Technical College, Ewet Offot indefinitely following students’ unrest, which led to the destruction of school property and inflicting of injuries on staff members and passersby.

According to a statement issued by the state’s Commissioner of Education, Professor Nse Essien in Uyo yesterday, the students engaged in unruly behaviour on Wednesday, Febuary19, 2020 destroying school property and causing injuries to police officers and members of staff.

He condemned the students’ attitude, especially after they were warned in October 2019 to desist from behaviours that would paint the state in a bad light.

Meghan Markle 'tells friends nothing legally stopping use of Sussex Royal brand'

Meghan Markle told friends there is nothing legally stopping her and Prince Harry from using the Sussex Royal brand despite the Queen's ban, it has been claimed.

The couple hoped to continue using the name, which they are believed to have spent a huge amount of money trademarking, after they step back from their roles as senior royals next month.

However the Queen put her foot down and said they weren't allowed to use it for their projects and charity work going forward - a decision that hasn't gone down well with the couple.

Landlord beats up tenant’s wife for allegedly turning down love advances

A woman, Mrs Comfort Giwa, said she got the beating of her life when her landlord, Mr Adisa Lukman openly brutalised her for allegedly turning down his love advances.

According to Comfort, the incident happened on February 9, 2020, while she was talking to a friend outside their residence at 3, Idiatu Kilani Street in the Fagba area of New Oko Oba, Agege, Lagos.

She said she was mercilessly beaten by the landlord during which she sustained varying degree of injuries on several parts of her body including a wound on her arm.

Border closure: Burkina Faso President, Kabore meets Buhari at Aso Rock

President Muhammadu Buhari today held a closed–door meeting with President Roch Marc Christian Kabore of Burkina Faso at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.

President Kabore, who arrived the presidential villa at about 3.10p.m, was received at the forecourt of the villa by President Buhari.

NAN reports that though the agenda of the meeting between the Nigerian leader and the visiting president was unknown, the two leaders are expected to deliberate on some regional and continental matters including the Nigeria’s border land closure.

Reps disagree over establishment of polytechnics in Delta State

Two members of the House of Representatives, Francis Oghene Waive (Ughelli South/Udu federal constituency) and Ossai Nicholas Ossai (Ndokwa East/Ndokwa West/Ukwuani federal constituency) on Thursday disagreed over the establishment of two polytechnics in their constituencies.

This followed after a Bill for the establishment of a Federal Polytechnic in Orogun, Ughelli North Council Area of Delta State scaled through second reading at plenary presided over by Deputy Speaker, Ahmed Wase.

There was, however, a mild drama as Ossai of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) raised a point of constitutional order on the need to adhere to the federal character principle.

Boko Haram strikes again, attacks motorists in Yobe

Boko Haram insurgents on Thursday stormed a community located 70 kilometers north from Damaturu the Yobe state capital and 30 kilometers to Dapchi where 110 schoolgirls were abducted in 2018.

The terrorists were reported to have attacked motorists, however, information on whether passengers have been abducted or not is still sketchy.

The Acting Assistant Director Army Public Relations, Sector 2 Operation Lafiya Dole, Lieutenant Chinonso Oteh who confirmed the incident said operatives of the army have been mobilized to the area, Channels TV reports.

The terrorists had last Sunday destroyed two telecommunication masts in Babbangida the headquarters of Tarmuwa Local Government Council of the State in order to break communications between locals and security personnel.

I can never join APC, Ayo Fayose replies party

Former Ekiti State Governor, Ayodele Fayose says he is not contemplating dumping the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), for another party.

Mr Lere Olayinka, his Media Aide, said this in a statement in Ado Ekiti, on Friday.

Olayinka, explained that the claim in some quarters that Fayose had concluded arrangements to embrace the All Progressives Congress (APC), was false.

“Someone of the status and pedigree of Fayose can never join APC,” he said.

EFCC arraigns Contractor in Kwara state for thirty one million naira fraud

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission ( EFCC) Ilorin Zonal Office on Thursday 20th of February 2020 arraigned a sixty six year old Contractor, Chief Joseph Oluwole Komolafe before Justice Mahmood Abdulgafar of a Kwara State High Court sitting in Ilorin.

Chief Komolafe was arraigned on a one count charge bordering obtaining money under false pretence to the tune of about thirty one million naira.

The EFCC alleged that the defendant diverted the said money from the fund meant to supply laboratory equipments for the University of Ilorin.

EFCC arrest Kano commissioner over alleged N76m fraud

The Kano Zonal office of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, (EFCC) has arrested a serving Kano State Commissioner for Special Duties, Mukhtar Ishaq, for allegedly diverting N76 million.

This was contained in a statement today by EFCC spokesman, Tony Orilade.

Ishaq was arrested for allegedly diverting monies, meant for Kano Municipal Local Government, while he was Chairman of the said Local Government.

A petition against him, stated that, while he was Chairman, Kano Municipal, council, he allegedly diverted N76m, meant for projects, development, and empowerment of the people.
