Man dies drinking cleaner he thought was drug championed by Trump to beat coronavirus

A man died after drinking fish tank cleaner, believing it was a malaria drug that could potentially beat coronavirus.

Gary Lenius and his wife Wanda, both in their 60s, drank chloroquine phosphate last month after confusing it for hydroxychloroquine - a drug previously touted by Donald Trump as a potential cure to treat Covid-19.

Gary, a retired mechanical engineer living in Arizona, died on March 22 and his wife was left in critical condition after ingesting the toxic chemical.

The man's wife said she had watched televised briefings during which President Trump talked about the potential benefits of chloroquine.

Anambra eases lockdown, reopens Churches, schools soon

The Anambra Government has relaxed the lockdown occasioned by COVID-19 in the state, four weeks after it was announced.

The lockdown was part of the measures taken by the government to check the spread of Coronavirus in the state.

Gov. Willie Obiano, who announced the easing of the lockdown in a broadcast today, however, said that all borders of the state with its neighbours remain closed.

Obiano said Churches were now allowed to hold activities but with the caveat that all worshipers must wear face masks and observe all standing safety and preventive measures as prescribed by health experts.

Prisoners in Argentine jail riot after confirmation of coronavirus

Dozens of prisoners at a jail in Argentina’s capital Buenos Aires staged a riot demanding urgent health measures after confirmation of a coronavirus case inside the facility.

Police surrounded the prison, which holds around 2,200 inmates, as explosions were heard.

A group of prisoners managed to climb onto a roof, burn mattresses and throw objects at security guards trying to quell the uprising.

Inmates could be heard shouting demands for a judge to hear their case and for better protection against the pandemic, just a few days after a warden at the Villa Devoto prison was confirmed to have contracted the novel coronavirus.

Saudi Arabia has abolished flogging as a punishment, the supreme court announced, hailing the latest in a series of “human rights advances” made by the king and his powerful son.

Court-ordered floggings in Saudi Arabia -- sometimes extending to hundreds of lashes -- have long drawn condemnation from human rights groups.

But they say the headline legal reforms overseen by Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman have brought no let-up in the conservative Islamic kingdom’s crushing of dissent, including through the use of the death penalty.

The Saudi supreme court said the latest reform was intended to “bring the kingdom into line with international human rights norms against corporal punishment”.

In the future, judges will have to choose between fines and/or jail sentences, or non-custodial alternatives like community service, the court said in a statement seen by AFP today.

North Korean dictator Kim Jong Un rumored to be dead

Kim Jong Un is rumored to be dead, according to a Hong Kong broadcast network, while a Japanese magazine is reporting that North Korea’s rocket man is in a “vegetative state” after he underwent heart surgery earlier this month.

A vice director of HKSTV Hong Kong Satellite Television, a Beijing-backed broadcast network in Hong Kong, claimed that Kim was dead, citing a “very solid source.” Her post on the Chinese messaging app Weibo has been shared widely on social media, according to a report in the International Business Times.

Other unconfirmed reports, attributed to senior party sources in Beijing, said an operation to insert a stent went wrong because the surgeon’s hands were shaking so badly.

The Police in Ogun State have arrested a herbalist, Lajuwon Ogunleye and his wife Adetutu Apalaya, for conspiracy and murder of their seven-year -old son, Pelumi Apalaya, for ritual purpose.

Also arrested along with the couple is one Fatai Sefiu in connection with the ritual killing of the boy.

The suspects were arrested on April 22 following an information received by the police at Abigi Divisional Headquarters that the seven year old boy who didn’t show any sign of illness, suddenly slumped and died.

This it was learnt, arouse the suspicion of some people around that the boy might have been used for ritual.

Osun records 12 new cases of coronavirus, total now 32

Osun State today, 25th of April, 2020 recorded 12 new cases of coronavirus.

This brings the total confirmed cases in the state to be 32.

A statement by the Chief Press Secretary to the governor, Mr. Ismail Omipidan, confirmed that the Commissioner for Health, Dr. Rafiu Isamotu said the confirmed cases are recorded in Osogbo, Ife, Ede, Ikire and Ejigbo.

He said, “the state has carried out 167 tests and 12 returned positive. This brings the number of active COVID-19 cases in Osun to 13.

Isamotu said the fresh tests were carried out in the last two weeks of the lockdown, adding that the lockdown has proven effective in containing spread of the virus.

An occupant of Taiwo Street, Mafoluku, Oshodi area of Lagos, Taiwo Eluyemi, dispersed some neighbours who came to his apartment to watch movies on Wednesday in compliance with social distancing rule to curtail the spread of coronavirus.

He never knew the action would cost him his life 24 hours later.

One of the neighbours identified simply as Habeeb, who was upset by Eluyemi’s action reportedly ambushed him along the street on Thursday and hacked him to death.

City Round learnt that Eluyemi was popular in the neighbourhood, a personality that attracted people to his house.

Rumours about Kim Jong-un's health intensify as Chinese medical team is sent to North Korea to advise on his care

China has dispatched a team to North Korea including medical experts to advise on North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, according to three people familiar with the situation.

The trip by the Chinese doctors and officials comes amid conflicting reports about the health of the North Korean leader. Reuters was unable to immediately determine what the trip by the Chinese team signaled in terms of Kim's health.

A delegation led by a senior member of the Chinese Communist Party's International Liaison Department left Beijing for North Korea on Thursday, two of the people said. The department is the main Chinese body dealing with neighbouring North Korea.

The sources declined to be identified given the sensitivity of the matter.

Son stabs mother, sets himself ablaze in Imo

The Imo State Police Command has arrested a man, Johnbosco Ejiogu, for stabbing his mother and then setting their home ablaze.

According to a statement by the police command, the incident occurred at Umudagu Mbieri, Mbaitoli Local Government Area of the state on Friday.

State Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Orlando Ikeokwu said that Ejiogu perpetrated the acts following an altercation between him and his mother.

He noted that only a swift reaction from neighbours and police prevented the suspect from killing himself and his mother in the burning house.

A Regional Manager with First Bank, Kano, Abdullahi Lawal has died of suspected case of Covid -19.

Family sources said the late Banker took I’ll on Friday and was first put on admission at private clinic in Kano from where he was referred to Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital.

Sources said late Lawal who was on his early 50’s was rushed to a private clinic after he suffered high fever, intermittent cough, and respiratory hiccups without getting medical care before he gave up the ghost.

According to the sources, the late Lawal was placed on Oxygen on arrival at the private clinic, and the treatment was discontinued after he displayed no signs of stability.

NSCDC arrest two girlfriends of notorious bandits

The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, NSCDC, has arrested two Nigerien sisters serving as informants to bandits in Anka local government area of Zamfara State.

They were arrested alongside a male suspect identified as Shafiu Abdullahi, along Bagega road in Anka council area by NSCDC operatives on surveillance patrol.

The male suspect has confessed to assisting “Shaho”, a suspected leader of a cattle rustling and kidnapping gang by supplying him information and other items.

The corps commandant, Aliyu Garba confirmed their arrest to newsmen in the state on Friday.

Twin sisters die three days apart after catching coronavirus

Twin sisters who had each worked as nurses have died within three days of each other after both tested positive for Covid-19.

Children’s nurse Katy Davis, 37, passed away at Southampton General Hospital on Tuesday while her identical twin, Emma, a former surgery nurse, died early on Friday.

The siblings, who both also suffered from an underlying health condition, have been praised for their excellent work in the nursing profession.

Their sister Zoe Davis told the BBC: ‘They always said they had come into the world together and would go out together as well. There are no words to describe how special they were.’

Alcohol sales have risen by a third during pandemic

Sales of food and alcohol have seen a huge jump in recent weeks, according to new figures.

The Office for National Statistics (ONS) has been analysing total sales volumes dived 5.1% as many stores shut their doors in the face of the coronavirus crisis.

Although total sales volumes have dived by 5.1% in total, food stores reported their strongest growth on record in March as sales jumped 10.4% with shoppers stocking up on essential groceries.

The total value of online food sales in March was more than double the same month last year, rising by 101%.

40 health workers test positive for coronavirus in Nigeria

About 40 health workers in Nigeria have, so far, tested positive for COVID-19, the Minister of Health, Osagie Ehanire, has said.

Mr Ehanire made this known at the daily Presidential Task Force on COVID-19 briefing on Thursday.

He cautioned health workers to ensure safety precautions are taken when treating any patient.

”This warning has become necessary due of the number of health workers who have tested positive for COVID-19, They are over forty now.

Coronavirus can linger in the eyes long after it has cleared from the nose, according to a new case report which sheds further light on possible symptoms.

Italian scientists say the country’s first Covid-19 patient had virus particles in her eyes 27 days after she was admitted to hospital.

Researchers at the National Institute for Infectious Diseases are concerned the infection can make copies of itself in the eyes, after it disappeared only to return days later.

The report, published in the Annals of Internal Medicine, highlights the importance of personal protective equipment with eye mucus and tears being a possible source of infection. It also warns pink eye could be an early sign of Covid-19, as it developed before the patient’s other symptoms

We're being forced to accept ridiculous salary - Kogi health workers cry out

The Chairman of Kogi State chapter of Medical and Health Workers Union of Nigeria (MHWUN), Comrade Gabriel Amari, has raised an alarm over the condition workers in the state are being forced to undergo.

He alleged that they are being forced by government functionaries to accept percentage salary in the state for the month of April.

Comr. Amari said his members and other unions in the state were being coerced by the Directors of Local Government Administration (DLGS) in the 21 LGAs to accept a dummy that the State Government had directed a reduction in the already ridiculous 50% salary paid to LG workers in the State, describing the attempt to use the Governor’s name to cause more hardship on local government workers as wicked and inhuman.

Coronavirus: Lagos discharges two Indians, Filipino, 7 others

Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu has disclosed that ten more Coronavirus patients have been discharged by the state.

This brings to 119, the total number of Coronavirus patients so far discharged by the State since the pandemic started.

However, Coronavirus patients discharged on Friday includes three females and seven males.

Among those discharged are three foreigners: two Indians and one Filipino.

Ogun to begin face mask enforcement May 1

Ogun Government says it will begin enforcing the wearing of face masks as from May 1, 2020.

Gov. Dapo Abiodun, who made this known while addressing journalists on Friday in Iperu, said that violators risked being arrested or even isolated for 14 days.

He. however, said the distribution of over 2 million masks would begin soon after which the enforcement would begin.

“We have always encouraged the use of face masks but let me add that with the reality facing us, the use of face mask in public by all individuals in Ogun State is now compulsory as from Friday May 1, 2020.

Mikano Limited reportedly sacks 600 workers

Mikano International Limited, Lagos, Nigeria, has reportedly sacked over 600 workers as a result of biting Coronavirus effect, Pm News reports.

Family members of some of the sacked workers expressed shock over the sack of their bread winners.

According to one of the affected staff, “I have just returned from a trip of delivering generators to a nearby state when I was called upon to take my sack letter.

“This is a very disturbing situation. How do I feed my family during this lockdown? I sincerely do not know what came over them on this mass sack.”

Coronavirus cases in Nigeria exceed 1,000, with 114 new infections

Nigeria’s Coronavirus cases have surpassed 1,000, as the Nigerian Centre for Disease Control, NCDC, announced 114 new infections late last night.

According to the NCDC, on its twitter handle, the total number of confirmed Coronavirus cases in Nigeria stand at 1,095.

In the 114 figures of new Coronavirus infections released by the NCDC on Friday, Lagos recorded 80 of the cases, with Gombe recording 21 new infections.

Others are: FCT, two; Zamfara, two; while Edo, Ogun, Oyo, Kaduna and Sokoto States recorded one case each.

Bodies left in UK's industrial fridges for days because of huge backlog [photos]

Corpses have been stored in industrial fridges for up to seven days due to a ‘300 body backlog’ at a morgue in UK.

Former chief prosecutor for the north-west of England Nazir Afzal said his older brother Umar, 71, passed away overnight in bed at his Birmingham home on April 8 after catching coronavirus. He says there was no space in the mortuary and the family had to wait around eight hours for an undertaker, who had 14 bodies to pick up that day.

The family were unable to follow the Islamic tradition of burying the deceased 24 hours after death, as the coroner told them they had a ‘300 body backlog’ to deal with. In total it took the family nine days to lay him to rest.

Ogun begins coronavirus tests with protective glass box [photos]

Ogun state has started testing people with workers using the protective glass box.

The state Governor, Dapo Abiodun announced this while sharing photos online.

He also revealed that samples from voluntary people in the state have been collected and sent for examination. He wrote:

Oyo state to return Federal Government’s ‘infested’ rice

Few days after attesting to the good quality of palliatives received from the Federal Government, Oyo State Government on Friday made a U-turn and declared the items are in bad condition.

Three trailer loads of rice totalling 1,800 bags sent to the State were said to have been infested with weavel and unfit for human consumption.

Oyo, which took delivery of the rice donated through the Nigeria Customs Service on Monday, said it would be expecting another round of replacement for the bad rice.

The Government spoke after conducting newsmen round the warehouse where the items donated were stored.

Nigeria’s All Progressives Congress national leader Bola Tinubu on Friday lost his chief security officer Lati Raheem.

The cause of his death is still unknown.

Raheem had been on Tinubu’s team for over 20 years and was the only aide still left from his time as governor of Lagos state from 1999 to 2007.

He was buried according to Muslim rites on Friday, the first day of Ramadan, which is the holiest month of the Islamic calendar.

Wuhan scientists 'did absolutely crazy things' to alter coronavirus, expert claims

A Russian microbiologist has claimed the coronavirus is the result of Wuhan scientists doing “absolutely crazy things” in their laboratory.

World renowned expert Professor Petr Chumakov claimed their aim was to study the pathogenicity of the virus and not “with malicious intent” to deliberately create a manmade killer.

The Wuhan laboratory also received funding from the US via the George Soros Foundation, he alleged.

Professor Chumakov, chief researcher at the Engelhardt Institute of Molecular Biology in Moscow, said: “In China, scientists at the Wuhan Laboratory have been actively involved in the development of various coronavirus variants for over ten years.

Husband writes emotional letter to wife and children before dying of coronavirus aged 32

A woman has shared the heartbreaking letter her husband of seven years wrote to her and their children before he died of coronavirus at the age of 32.

Jonathan Coelho, from Danbury, Connecticut, went into cardiac arrest and died Wednesday after being admitted to the hospital 28 days earlier for coronavirus.

Days before the 32-year-old succumbed to the virus, he took out his phone and wrote a note to his wife Katie Coelho and their two children, Braedyn and Penny.

“I was able to sit with Jonathan in the ICU after it happened and just sat, cried and told him how much the kids and I loved him,” Katie wrote in an update to a GoFundMe page set up for the family. “When Jonathan’s phone was returned to me, I turned it on and there was a note up written by Jonathan the day before he was intubated.”
