Nigerian students give DSS Monday to free arrested #RevolutionNow protesters

The National Association of Nigerian Students, South-West Zone, has given the Department of State Services till Monday to release detained #RevolutionNow protesters.

The students condemned the arrest and brutalisation of the peaceful protesters in Osun, Lagos, Ogun, Abuja and demanded their release. 

NANS, in a statement today, vowed to stage a demonstration if the demand was not met.

The statement was signed by the NANS Zone D Coordinator, Kowe Amos; Secretary-General, Giwa Temitope; and Public Relations Officer, Kazeem Israel.

He died of Covid-19 complications.

The spokesperson of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Dele Oyewale, who disclosed this in a statement said they are to sweep the Physics Department of the University of Ilorin and the premises of Saint Anthony Secondary School, Ilorin, for three months or pay N50,000 option of fine each.

Delivering his judgment, according to Oyewale, Justice Oyinloye said, “I have carefully considered the evidence before the court, the exhibits tendered and the uncontroverted testimony of the prosecution witness”

MFM Lagos & Ogun churches will not reopen until September

The Mountain of Fire and Miracles Ministries has said it will not reopen its churches in Lagos and Ogun states, despite the federal and state governments allowing for worship centres to reopen.

The ministry, in a statement by the Chairman, MFM Media Committee, Pastor Oladele Bank-Olemoh, on Friday, noted that the church would not reopen in the two states until the tentative date of September 13, 2020.

Bank-Olemoh said, “The leadership of this ministry is aware that the governments of Lagos and Ogun states had announced that churches could resume worship in their physical church buildings as from August 9 and 16, 2020, respectively.

Twin YouTubers Alan and Alex Stokes are facing felony charges for allegedly posing as bank robbers during a series of pranks last year that resulted in an Uber driver being held at gunpoint by police.

The siblings, 23, are each facing a felony count of false imprisonment effected by violence, menace, fraud or deceit, and one misdemeanor count of falsely reporting an emergency, the Orange County District Attorney’s Office announced this week.

Former World Cup winner Ronaldinho Gaucho has moved a step closer to ending his Paraguayan ordeal on Friday.

This came about when prosecutors said they would not oppose a “conditional suspension” of the case that would allow him to return to Brazil.

The twice World Player of the Year was arrested on March 6 along with his brother and business manager Roberto Assis after they tried to enter Paraguay with adulterated Paraguayan passports.

They were held in jail for 32 days before being conditionally released on April 7 after paying 1.6 million dollars in bail.

Coronavirus-sniffing dogs capable of detecting the virus with 92 percent accuracy have been recruited to vet travellers arriving in the United Arab Emirates at Dubai airport.

According to DailyMail UK, Dubai International Airport has now also introduced the use of police sniffer dogs who are capable of detecting coronavirus among passengers within minutes.

NLC gives Air peace, Bristow helicopters 14 days to recall sacked pilots

The Nigeria Labour Congress has condemned and rejected the sack of 100 Pilots by Air Peace and 69 Pilots by Bristow Helicopters.

The union also condemned the sack of the executives of National Union of Air Transport Employees (NUATE) working with Turkish Air.

The NLC said the sack of the workers by the airlines was highly insensitive, callous, and unjust.

In a statement by President of the NLC, Ayubba Wabba, the union gave the airlines two weeks to recall the sacked workers or face industrial unrest.

48% of inmates at a US prison test positive for coronavirus

More than 500 inmates at an Arizona state prison have tested positive for coronavirus, according to local health officials. 

The 517 inmates who tested positive at the Arizona State Prison Complex Tucson Whetstone Unit make up nearly half up the unit's 1,066 population.   

They've been housed together in separate areas and are receiving medical care, according to a statement released by the Arizona Department of Corrections, Rehabilitation and Reentry, AZ Central reports.

The new cases are a 72 per cent jump in the department's identified coronavirus cases.

Police investigating a drive-by shooting that killed Chicago rapper FBG Duck are trying to determine whether he was targeted for mocking deceased rival gang members in a recently released music video.

The 26-year-old artist, born Carlton Weekly, was shot dead in broad daylight in the high-end Gold Coast section of Chicago while shopping in boutiques with two friends, who were also injured in the attack.

Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot said that the assailants were able to track down Weekly because he had been livestreaming his travels through the city.

Bauchi State Governor appoints special assistant on 'unmarried women affairs'

Bauchi State Governor, Bala Mohammed, has appointed Balaraba Ibrahim as the Special Assistant on Women Affairs (Unmarried).

This is according to a letter dated August 4, 2020, with reference number GO/SS/POL/S/83 and signed by the Secretary to the State Government, Mohammed Baba.

The letter, which was obtained by Sahara Reporters, read in part, “I am pleased to convey the approval of his Excellency Sen Bala Abdulkadir Mohammed CON, the Governor of Bauchi State, for your appointment as Special Assistant, Women Affairs (Unmarried).

Producer who has won Grammy and worked for Beyonce is arrested on 15 s.e.x assault charges

The Grammy award winning producer of Beyonce's 'Drunk in Love'  was arrested Wednesday on more than a dozen s3xual assaults.

Detail, real name Noel Christopher Fisher, was held  on nearly $6.3 million bail, according to a statement from the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department.

The 41-year-old producer was charged on July 31 with 15 counts of s3xual assault and five counts of felony assault, the statement said. He is accused of crimes between 2010 and 2018.

Detectives submitted the case to the Los Angeles County district attorney's office in January, the statement said. It didn't provide other details.

12-year old girl is killed by stray bullet during drive by shooting involving criminal gangs

The shooting of a 12-year-old girl in Stockholm has sparked outrage and reignited a debate around a rise in gang-related violence in Sweden. 

The girl, who is not believed to have been the intended target, was hit by a stray bullet aimed at two men allegedly linked to Swedish organised crime, local news website, Expressen, reported.  

People had continued to place flowers and candles at the scene this week.

'This can't happen again. It's a 12-year-old girl,' said Christina Lundstrom, 51, who had come to pay her respects.

The Lagos State Government has directed Junior Secondary School (JSS) 3 students who are registered for National Examination Council (NECO) Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) to resume on Monday.

Recall that an earlier pronouncement issued by the state had directed SS3 and Technical Studies (TEC3) Students to resume on Aug. 3, to enable them revise and sit for their forthcoming West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) and NABTEB.

The Commissioner for Education, Mrs Folashade Adefisayo, said only those students who are registered for NEC, BECE scheduled to begin on the Aug. 24 are permitted to resume.

Adefisayo also said that other JSS 3 students awaiting to write BECE organised by the Lagos State Examinations Board would soon be informed of the scheduled dates of their examination.

Thousands of Chinese beer lovers left their face masks and virus worries behind to gather in large crowds and raise a much-needed glass as the largest booze festival in Asia opened.

China has largely brought the coronavirus outbreak under control through a series of lockdowns and restrictions, and the small number of cases reassured beer-lovers to turn out at the annual Qingdao beer festival despite the global pandemic.

At the festival, which opened on Friday and will run until late August, drinkers were eating and drinking together, watching shows and fireworks and sampling the more than 1,500 types of beer available.

Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike has expressed surprise that the leadership of the All Progressives Congress (APC) will support its candidate in the Edo State governorship election, Osagie Ize-Iyamu despite the weighty allegations against him.

Speaking as Guest on a Live Television Programme, Wike said it is difficult to contemplate that the leadership of APC are still standing with Osagie Ize-Iyamu to canvass votes for him.

He said anybody with conscience and truly loves democracy cannot be proud to support a man who is facing corruption charges of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission(EFCC).

“President Muhammadu Buhari administration claims to fight corruption. But the APC candidate is facing corruption charges. Except they are saying he was charged before because he was of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) then.
