Buhari sends message to US President-elect Joe Biden

President Muhammadu Buhari has congratulated former Vice President Joe Biden on his election as President of the United States “at a time of uncertainty and fear in world affairs.”

The Nigerian leader said “your election is a significant reminder that democracy is the best form of government because it offers the people the opportunity to change their government by peaceful means.”

According to President Buhari, “the most powerful group are not the politicians, but voters who can decide the fate of the politicians at the polling booth.”

He noted that “the main fascination of democracy is the freedom of choice and the supremacy of the will of the people.”

Covid-19: Oyo state shuts down tertiary institution

The Oyo State covid-19 Task Force has shut down a tertiary institution following the discovery of a Covid-19 case.

This was confirmed in a statement issued on Saturday in Ibadan by Mr. Taiwo Adisa, the Chief Press Secretary to Gov. Seyi Makinde on behalf of the Task Force.

The statement noted that the Task Force has begun contact tracing while subjecting every possible contact to necessary surveillance.

The management of schools, workplaces and religious centres were also enjoined to ensure strict compliance with the established Covid-19 protocols.

Joe Biden won the presidency which makes Kamala the first woman, and a woman of color to be elected to such a position in the White House.

Joe Biden won by clinching Pennsylvania and its 20 electoral votes on Saturday morning, after days of painstaking vote counting following record turnout across the country.

The win in Pennsylvania took Biden’s electoral college vote to 284, surpassing the 270 needed to win the White House.

Trump becomes 11th one-term US president

Donald Trump, who frequently compares his presidency as next to Abraham Lincoln’s, has become the 11th president to be ousted from the White House after serving only one term in office.

His loss to Democrat rival Joe Biden saw him join the dreaded single-term president’s club – and made him the first man to do so since George H W Bush lost to Bill Clinton in 1992 after just four years in office.

Most single-term presidents are Republican, with presidents at greater risk of serving only a single term if the country faces economic hardship and sharply divided public opinion – both of which have beset Trump.

George HW Bush was ousted after a single term after struggling with an economic recession and decreased focus on foreign policy.

Robbery suspects who tried burning victims alive arrested in Calabar

Two armed robbery suspects who tried to burn their victims alive while robbing a household have been arrested in Calabar.

 The Cross River State Police Command at the weekend also disclosed that they also rescued a kidnap victim with the assistance of the community while his assailants escaped when they discovered the police were on their trail.

Vanguard learned that the robbery suspects who poured fuel on their victims if they raised an alarm were 22-year-old Oke Sheriff and Eyo Nsa Etim, 35 who have confessed to the crime and would be charged to Court

Students of the Tai Solarin University of Education (TASUED) have demanded justice for Pelumi Onifade.

The students protested at the Lagos State Court of Arbitration, Lekki, venue of the Judicial Panel of Inquiry on SARS abuses.

Pelumi died in the custody of the Lagos State Task Force.

The deceased was reportedly hit by bullet from policemen deployed to a charged scene.

The anxious waiting is over: Joe Biden has been elected the 46th President of the United States, the CNN and AP reported.

The 77 year-old Democratic candidate won the decisive battleground state of Pennsylvania on Saturday.

He thus clinched 273 electoral college votes, three more than he needed to win the presidency.

He is the oldest American to be elected President.

US election: Protesters storm vote counting centres with guns

Armed protesters have been seen gathering outside offices where election workers are counting the votes that will decide who wins the US presidential race.

According to Al Jazeera, some of the angry protesters carry shotguns; some have handguns while some other carry black, military-style semi-automatic rifles.

According to the report, the protesters with weapons are a small minority of the demonstrators and that there have been no reports of anyone being shot.

Moreover, laws in the States, Arizona and Michigan, where the guns are seen at counting units, allow people to openly carry firearms in public.

Sixteen traders kidnapped as gunmen storm Ondo market

Sixteen market women have been abducted in Ondo State by gunmen suspected to be kidnappers.

The kidnappers, numbering about 10, who were said to be fully armed, struck on the busy Akure/Owo road and waylaid the market women who were on transit from Akoko axis of the State to Akure, the Ondo State capital.

Among the kidnapped market women was the Iyaloja of Isua-Akoko, in Akoko South East Local Government area of the state, Chief Mrs Helen Edward who was leading the other women to the monthly meeting of Iyalaje, Iyalojas, as well as women leaders in Akure.

The women were abducted between Ogbese and Uso of the Akure/Owo road.

‘Bad things happened inside’: Trump rants again on Twitter

U.S. President Donald Trump has claimed without evidence that bad things’ happened at counting centres in Pennsylvania and other states, where his overnight lead on Tuesday, against Joe Biden, went up in smoke.

In four tweets now flagged by Twitter police as conveying false and misleading information, Trump alleged a lot of things.

He claimed among others that “Tractors blocked doors & windows were covered with thick cardboard so that observers could not see into the count rooms”.

Court remands seven EndSARS protesters in prison till 2021

Operatives of the FCT police command on Friday dispersed youths who stormed the National Assembly complex to resume the #EndSARS protest.

The youths had gathered at the complex to continue their demonstration against police brutality and demand for comprehensive reform in the country’s internal security architecture.

However, the security operatives fired tear gas canisters to disrupt the mass action and force them out of the scene.

Following the action of security operatives, the protesters, led by activist Omoyele Sowore, dispersed calmly.

Dog dies after being r.a.p.e.d by several men and stabbed 30 times in the process

A female dog has died after being r.a.p.e.d by several men and stabbed 30 times. 

The shocking case was shared by the international press and has generated a great deal of controversy after being released on social media.

Speaking to newspaper El Tiempo, Martha Buitrago, who rescued the animal, explained that the dog was visibly weakened and immediately took her to the vet.

The woman explained that the animal was r.a.p.e.d, since its sexual organs were “torn”. In addition to being beaten with extreme violence, the dog was also stabbed and seriously injured.

EndSARS: Rinu, Majekodunmi pull out of Lagos Judicial Panel after CBN’s account freeze

The youth representatives at the Lagos Judicial Panel refused to sit during Saturday’s session.

The Judicial Panel of Inquiry was set up by the Lagos State Government, to probe the Lekki toll gate shootings and several complaints of human rights abuses against members of the disbanded Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS).

However, after Central Bank obtained a court order to freeze the bank accounts of Adegoke Pamilerin and Bolatito Oduala, popularly known as Rinu alongside 17 others linked to the EndSARS protests, the youth reps boycotted today’s sitting.

Man kidnaps and r.a.p.e.s girl on her way to school in London

A man has been charged with the kidnap and r.a.p.e of a teenage girl.

Kadian Nelson, 26, is due to appear at Wimbledon Magistrates' Court today over the incident in south-west London.

He was arrested on Tuesday night after a teenage girl was allegedly r.a.p.e.d in North Place, Mitcham, near Colliers Wood, shortly after 7am on Tuesday.

Mitcham and Morden MP Siobhain McDonagh released a statement after the alleged incident.

#EndSARS: Youths threaten 2nd wave of protest from Monday

Nigerians youths are threatening a second wave of the #EndSARS protests on Monday 9th November 2020, in some parts of Lagos and Abuja.

Some aggrieved youths have taken to social media to show their displeasure following a court order granting the Central Bank of Nigeria, the right to freeze the accounts of 19 individuals and a public affairs company linked to the #EndSARS protests.

The ex-parte request to freeze the accounts granted by Justice Ahmed Mohammed, of the Federal High Court in Abuja was filed by the apex bank on October 20.

In reaction to the move to freeze the accounts, Nigerians have taken to social media to backlash the CBN Governor, Godwin Emefiele, for freezing the bank accounts of #EndSARS protesters and promoters across the country.

Nigerians react as CBN freezes accounts of 20 participants of #EndSARS protest

Nigerians have reacted to CBN freezing accounts of atleaset 20 active participants of the now suspended #EndSARS protest, taking a swipe at the financial institution for knowing how to freeze bank accounts of ''innocent protesters'' but can't freeze that of politicians embezzling money.

The reactions came shortly after the news of the frozen accounts got online.

A famous online comedian, Mr Macaroni joined in the slamming saying;

''CBN knows how to freeze bank accounts of Nigerian Youths asking for a better Nigeria but cannot freeze the bank accounts of corrupt politicians embezzling funds meant to develop the country.Yeye dey smell!.''

EndSARS: Pamilerin, Rinu react as court grants CBN request to freeze accounts

Adegoke Pamilerin and Bolatito Oduala, popularly known as Rinu have reacted to the court order granting the Central Bank of Nigeria’s request to freeze their accounts alongside 17 others linked to the EndSARS protests.

The request filed by the CBN on October 20 was granted by Justice Ahmed Mohammed of a Federal High Court in Abuja to freeze transactions on 20 accounts for a period of 180days.

Rinu, Pamilerin are some of the affected individuals, alongside Chima David Ibebunjoh, Mary Doose Kpengwa, Saadat Temitope Bibi, Bassey Victor Israel, Wisdom Busaosowo Obi, Nicholas Ikhalea Osazele, Ebere Idibie, Akintomide Lanre Yusuf, Uhuo Ezenwanyi Promise and Mosopefoluwa Odeseye.

Others are Umoh Grace Ekanem, Babatunde Victor Segun, Mulu Louis Teghenan, Mary Oshifowora, Winifred Akpevweoghene Jacob, Victor Solomon, Idunu A. Williams, and Gatefield Nigeria Limited.

Don’t wrongfully claim office of president, Trump warns Biden as US Secret Service begins to protect Biden

President Donald Trump has warned his Democrat challenger Joe Biden not to “wrongfully claim” the White House as electoral college votes showed the former vice president close to an insurmountable lead.

Trump, who has consistently threatened legal proceedings since Tuesday, made this known via Twitter on Friday.

He wrote, “Joe Biden should not wrongfully claim the office of the President. I could make that claim also. Legal proceedings are just now beginning!”

Vote counting is still ongoing in about five battleground states but the electoral college votes are tilting in favour of Biden who is some figures shy from the magic number of 270.

US upcoming rapper, King Von shot dead outside a lounge

Emerging Chicago rapper King Von has been identified as one of three people shot and killed in Atlanta yesterday. 

The Atlanta Police Department said, during an altercation that involved both on- and off-duty police officers who were attempting to break up a fight.

King Von, born Dayvon Bennett, 26, was among two groups of men who began arguing outside of the Monaco Hookah Lounge, near downtown, around 3:20 a.m., leading to gunfire, the authorities said in a statement later on Friday. 

Two off-duty Atlanta police officers were working security at the establishment, and an on-duty officer was patrolling nearby, they said. Two of the officers confronted the shooters, leading to additional shots fired.

El-Rufai, disassociated himself from the campaign posters advertising his vice presidential ambition for 2023.

Boko Haram started as youth protests – Governor Zulum pleads to #EndSARS promoters

Borno State Governor, Babagana Zulum on Friday warned End SARS protesters to always shun destructive actions while embarking on protests.

Zulum, while commending residents of Borno State and youths, for not participating in the protest, said that the Boko Haram insurgency started with protests by the young people.

The Governor who met with President Muhammadu Buhari on Friday traced the origin of Boko Haram insurgency to protest against police brutality in Maiduguri, the state capital.

He said, “I am calling on all Nigerians especially the youths to be very careful. The whole Boko Haram saga started as a result of the protest by some youths in Maiduguri against the use of helmet by motorcycle riders, you have seen the situation now.

Twitter flags all ‘president-elect Biden’ tweets as premature

Twitter on Friday flagged all posts referring to Joe Biden as “president-elect  as premature posts ,” as the vote count continued in the knife-edge US election with the Democrat leading Donald Trump in several key states.

Tweets referring to the former vice president with the victor’s title and his running mate Kamala Harris as “vice president-elect” were tagged with messages saying counts were not yet final.

“Official sources may not have called the race when this was tweeted,” read a Twitter message below a post from Democratic Coalition co-founder and podcaster Scott Dworkin using the two titles for Biden and Harris.

The notice came with a link to information about the status of the election.

University lifts suspension imposed on 2 students over Facebook posts

The management of Ignatius Ajuru University of Education, Port Harcourt has lifted suspension slammed on two students over alleged offensive Facebook posts.

In a press statement, the University management said the suspensions were lifted on the two students identified as Mr. Chibuzor Remmy and Mr. Sunday Idonegit based on appeals from well-meaning individuals.

“The Management of Ignatius Ajuru University of Education, on behalf of Senate, hereby lifts the suspension order on the two students: Mr. Chibuzor Remmy and Mr. Sunday Idonegit, who published materials on the social media capable of causing public disorder,” the institution said.

The students were suspended for one academic session by the management of the institution over facebook comments in reaction to a press release by the Vice Chancellor (VC) Prof Ozo-Mekuri Ndimele.

Ali Kwara, legendary hunter, vigilante leader, crime fighter, and nemesis of bandits and kidnappers, is dead.

The dare-devil hunter whose movie-like exploits against bandits, armed robbers and terrorists are well documented in virtually all the 19 Northern states, died in Abuja today.

The Federal Government had brought him to Abuja to take over his medical treatment.

But he gave up the ghost.

CBN obtains order to freeze #EndSARS promoters’ accounts till January

The Central Bank of Nigeria has obtained a court order freezing the accounts of 20 #EndSARS promoters till January 2021.

The order was pursuant to a motion ex parte filed by the CBN before a Federal High Court.

The certified true copy of the order obtained by an online medium, Peoples Gazette, showed that the CBN applied for the restriction of the 20 accounts on October 20 which was several days after it had already ordered commercial banks to freeze the accounts.

The suit marked FHC/ABJ/CS/1384/2020 listed the 20 defendants as – Bolatito Oduala, Chima Ibebunjoh, Mary Kpengwa, Gatefield Nigeria Limited, Saadat Bibi, Bassey Israel, Wisdom Obi, Nicholas Osazele, Ebere Idibie, Akintomide Yusuf, Uhuo Promise, Mosopefoluwa Odeseye and Adegoke Emmanuel.

Six test positive for COVID-19 in Lagos secondary school

Five members of staff and a student have tested positive for COVID-19 in a secondary school in Lagos State.

The Lagos State Government made this known in a statement on Friday.

The statement was titled, ‘Lagos confirms COVID_19 infection in secondary school’ and signed by

the Commissioner for Health, Prof. Akin Abayomi.

Saudi princess robbed of luxury worth $720,000 in Paris heist

Thieves have taken some 600,000 euros worth of high-end goods from the Paris home of a Saudi princess, a source close to the case said on Friday.

 The 47-year-old princess, who had not set foot in the apartment since August, discovered on returning that bags, watches, jewellery and furs worth about $720,000 were missing.

The princess, whose name was not revealed, was hospitalised in a state of shock and has not yet spoken to police.

The thieves appear to have entered the apartment, situated near the swank Avenue George V in the heart of the French capital, without using force, the source close to the case said.

Twitter bans former aide of Trump Steve Bannon’s account

Twitter has said it permanently banned an account created by former Donald Trump adviser Steve Bannon which had called for the execution of federal officials during this week’s post-election social media turmoil.

The @WarRoomPandemic account was “permanently suspended for violating the Twitter Rules, specifically our policy on the glorification of violence,” a statement from the social media platform said.

Before the account was blocked, it included a call by Bannon to cut off the heads of FBI director Christopher Wray and top pandemic official Anthony Fauci.

Bannon tweeted that he would “put the heads on pikes” of the officials, in a reference to Tudor-era England as “a warning to federal bureaucrats.”

A Nigerian man who trekked to celebrate President Buhari's victory now has a regret.

Dahiru Buba, trekked to celebrate President Buhari’s election victory in 2015.

He reportedly from Gombe to Abuja for 15 days to celebrate the President's win.

According to Daily Trust, he is currently suffering from severe limb pains and now crying out to his state governor, and APC leaders to help him.

NIS tells #EndSARS promoter, Modupe Odele to come for her seized passport

#EndSARS promoter, Modupe Odele has said the Nigeria Immigration Service, NIS, has asked her to come and pick up her seized passport.

Odele’s passport was seized six days ago at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos while travelling out of the country.

She had complained and wondered why her passport was seized without any explanation from the NIS.

However, Odele tweeted today that NIS has asked her to come for the collection of her passport by 4.00pm today.

Nollywood actress and mom of one, Tonto Dikeh has dislcosed she will be getting into politics in the nearest future.

She disclosed this after meeting with Senator George Akume, the Minister of Special Duties and Intergovernmental Affairs with some CYMS delegates.

Tonto Dikeh had uploaded pictures from the event which prompted a follower to ask if the actress intends to get into politics and she replied with a sure answer YES.

The follower asked; “Tonto do you intend going into politics someday?”

She replied; “You are looking at a future Senator”.

House of Reps want Road safety officers to now carry guns

Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) operatives will begin to bear firearms to curtail the excesses of road users in Nigeria.

The House of Representatives Committee on FRSC made the disclosure during the corps’ 2020 budget performance and 2021 budget defence, on Thursday in Abuja.

The Chairman, Akinfolarin Mayowa, explained that the 1992 Act of FRSC allowed the corps to carry guns, NAN reports.

Mayowa said the implementation had become necessary to ensure laws were obeyed and to allow the FRSC function effectively.

Nigerian university suspends students over Facebook posts

The management of Ignatius Ajuru University of Education, Port Harcourt, Rivers State, has suspended two students for one academic session for allegedly making inciting posts on their social media handles.

The affected students are Sunday Idongesit Okpokpo of the Department of Political Science and Chibuzor Remmy of the Department of Educational Management.

According to a statement by the Vice Chancellor of the university, Prof Ozo-Mekuri Ndimele, both students are not to be seen on any of the three campuses of the institution unless on invitation.

The institution accused Okpokpo of creating panic and confusion when he posted on social media calling for the cancellation of the final year examination scheduled to commence on Monday November 2, 2020 as well as the matriculation veremony scheduled to hold on Saturday November 7, 2020.
