US removes reciprocity visa fees for Nigerians

The federal government announced on Saturday that the United States has removed all visa reciprocity fees for Nigerians seeking visas to the country with effect from December 3.

Disclosing this at the weekend, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said the development was sequel to the removal of excess visa application, processing and biometric fees for American citizens applying for Nigerian visas.

It would be recalled that the Donald Trump administration had in 2019 imposed the reciprocity fee for all approved non-immigrant visa applications by Nigerians.

The fee was charged in addition to visa application fees for only applicants who are issued visas.

Kidnappers kill man in Kaduna despite receiving ransom

Kidnappers have killed a man, identified as Sani Khalil Digana, despite receiving a ransom for his release.

The deceased was abducted on November 21 by gunmen suspected to be bandits on the road linking the Kaduna international airport and the Rigasa station of the Kaduna-Abuja train.

He was attacked alongside a students’ leader and #SecureNorth campaigner, Rabiu Auwal, who was shot, and Umar Bn El-Khatab.

The three young men were inside a vehicle when the gunmen fired at them around 9 pm along the road.

A relative of the deceased, who preferred anonymity, confirmed his death, saying the kidnappers killed Digana after collecting ransom for his release.


Election day tragedy: Four policemen drown in Bayelsa

Four policemen have reportedly drowned in a river in Bayelsa State on their way to place of their assigned duty to monitor the senatorial bye-election in the state.

The policemen and other were said to be heading to Southern Ijaw Local Government Area when the tragedy occurred.

While four policemen were reported drowned, some others were rescued.

Police Public Relations Officer, PPRO, Bayelsa State Police Command, Asinim Butswat, confirmed the tragedy, saying that the boat capsized on their way to Oporoma, headquarters of Southern Ijaw Local Government Area of the state.

Inmates who escaped from Edo prisons rearrested for robbery

Three of the inmates who escaped in the jailbreak of two prisons in Edo after the ENDSARS protests turned violent have been rearrested for robbery.

The suspects, Osamuyi Omoregbe, Raymond Aimua and Omon Ayo, were among 34 suspects police paraded for armed robbery, kidnapping and cultism.

Operatives of the Edo state police command has rearrested three inmates who escaped from the two correctional centres in Edo following the attack on the centres by hoodlums during the #EndSARS protest over alleged armed robbery.

The state police commissioner Johnson Kokumon said the three escapees would be charged for escaping detention as well as the fresh crime committed.

#EndSARS: Nobody died at Lekki, those who claimed they saw copses have eye problem- Buratai

The Chief of Army Staff, Lt Gen Tukur Buratai, has insisted that nobody was killed during the #EndSARS protest at Lekki toll gate in Lagos State on October 20.

Buratai said those claiming protesters were killed were seeing “double.”

Hours before a curfew was scheduled to begin, soldiers had stormed the Lekki toll gate on October 20 where protesters had gathered and started shooting, killing an unconfirmed number of people.

The incident has received widespread condemnation within and outside Nigeria.

DPO shot, four policemen abducted by Ogun villagers

Hoodlums in Ogun village have shot a Divisional of Police Officer, DPO, abducted four policemen and carted away two AK 47 rifles.

The incident took place at Aba Tuntun village, Ijebu-Igbo in the Ijebu -North Local Government Area of Ogun State.

Spokesman, Ogun State Police Command, Abimbola Oyeyemi confirmed the abduction, but said three of the policemen had been rescued.

Asides the policemen, three vigilante men were also kidnapped by the hoodlums.

Billionaire Harry Akande dies at 77

Billionaire businessman and father-in-law of actress, Dakore Egbuson-Akande, Harry Akande, is dead. 

Akande, who was the Agba Oye of Ibadanland, died after a brief illness in the early hours of Saturday. He was was aged 77.

Akande’s death was announced in a statement on Saturday by Dakore's husband, Olumide Akande, who described the death of the businessman as a huge shock to the family.

INEC officials sleep off as voters refused to come out

Ad-hoc officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, were caught sleeping on Saturday in Ikorodu as voters refused to come out to vote at the Lagos East Senatorial bye-election.

Most of the voters were mid-aged people while the youths were hardly seen.

As a result of the few voters on ground, INEC officials decided to take a nap.

Soldier beats, strips lady for indecent dressing in Ogun

A soldier, whose identity could not be immediately ascertained, on Saturday, assaulted a young lady who was dressed in a manner he considered indecent.

The incident happened around 9:47 am at Oju-Ore in the Ota area of Ogun State.

The lady, who was clad in a pair of shorts and white knitted coverup, was trekking on the road when she was assaulted.

Eyewitnesses told The Punch that the soldier, who was riding in a commercial bus, alighted from the bus and pounced on the young lady, unprovoked.

Hoodlums disrupt electoral process in Ikorodu, Lagos

Over 50 hoodlums disrupted the electoral process in the polling units at Agbala town, Ikorodu, during the Lagos-bye elections on Saturday.

The hoodlums who claimed to belong to different cult groups ( Eiye and Aiye included) stormed polling unit 009 and polling unit 008, ward 18, Agbala village, Ikorodu Local Government Area.

As of 11.48 am, the entrance of the polling unit 008, in Agbala village, was closed with the 3 security officers at the scene overwhelmed.

Trouble started when the different cult groups demanded money in exchange for the peaceful conduct of the voting exercise.

Benue varsity student arrested for killing an associate professor of the institution

The Police Command in Benue says it has arrested Mr Jeremiah Nnamdi, a student of Federal University of Agriculture Makurdi (FUAM) over the alleged killing of an associate professor at the institution, Karl Kwaghger.

This is contained in a statement on Saturday by the command’s spokesperson, DSP Catherine Anene.

The university don was killed on Nov. 28 at the Tarka Foundation, Gboko, where he had gone for relaxation.

The police said that the suspect, who hails from Imo State was arrested in Abuja while trying to sell a car belonging to the deceased.

Indian health minister tests positive after getting COVID-19 vaccine trial dose

Health Minister of the northern Indian state of Haryana Anil Vij, who was given a trial dose of a Coronavirus (COVID-19) vaccine in November, tested positive for the virus on Saturday.

Vij, who is the holding charge of several ministries including health, said on Twitter that he had contracted the virus.

He urged people, who came in contact with him in recent days to undergo a test.

Afrobeat musician, Femi Kuti, has opened up on the reason his father, Afrobeat legend Fela Anikulapo Kuti never gave him sound education.

He said Fela never sent him to school because he wanted to use him as an experiment, to prove that he could be successful without acquiring education.

He said this recently in an interview with presenters of Your View, an all-female talk show on TVC.

According to him, though Fela was great, he had his faults, one of which was his refusal to send him to school, an experiment he believes was very risky.

Ndume dumps Maina, says he’s unreliable

The Chairman, Senate Committee on the Army, Senator Ali Ndume, said he has instructed his legal team to begin the process of terminating the surety bond he signed for captured fugitive Abdulrasheed Maina.

The senator from Borno said he could no longer continue to stand surety for the former chairman of the defunct Pension Reform Task Force Team, because he has proven to be untrustworthy.

Abdulrasheed Maina, who jumped bail was on Friday ordered by a Federal High Court to be remanded in custody till the end of his trial. 

Justice Okon Abang made the order following an application by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission’s prosecuting counsel, Mr Mohammed Abubakar.

Sacked driver connives with gang to kidnap boss’ wife

A driver, Tigidam Bright, has been arrested for his complicity in the kidnapping of his boss’ wife, Mrs Gift Topba, in Port Harcourt, Rivers State.

He was apprehended alongside two suspected kidnappers – Isaac Michael, Leera Barisua – by operatives of the Inspector-General of Police Intelligence Response Team.

City Round learnt that some gunmen kidnapped Gift, the wife of an Ogoni human rights activist, Gani Topba, on August 25, 2020 at the entrance of an estate where she lives and took her to their den in the Khana area of the state.

They reportedly demanded N100m ransom initially but later reduced it to N500,000, which was paid by the family before she was released.

US imposes visa restrictions on Chinese officials, citing coercion

The United States on Friday imposed new sanctions on Chinese officials for allegedly participating in coercive influence activities around the world.

In a statement, US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo announced new visa restrictions on Chinese officials who have engaged in a variety of activities, from physical violence to espionage, to exert influence outside of China’s borders.

“These malign activities are intended to co-opt and coerce subnational leaders, overseas Chinese communities, academia, and other civil society groups both in the United States and other countries in furtherance of the [Chinese Communist Party’s] authoritarian narratives and policy preferences,” Pompeo said.

The names of the individuals targeted by the new sanctions were not released. However, Pompeo said that the sanctions would extend to individuals active in United Front Work Department, an agency within the Chinese Communist Party known for carrying out influence operations abroad.

Duncan Mighty is not telling the truth, we dare him to post evidence -Sister-in-law

Maria Nwakanma, a sister-in-law to Port Harcourt-based singer, Duncan Mighty, has refuted the allegations recently levelled against her by the latter.

Nwakanma stated that neither she nor any member of her family was interested in any of the singer’s properties, adding that Mighty’s social media posts were a pointer to the type of husband he was.

In a nine part-post on Instagram, Duncan Mighty had accused his wife, Vivian, her mother, Charity Nwakanma, and siblings, Maria and Bright, of going diabolical to poison him and inherit his properties.

He also claimed that he recorded some of his wife’s confession as evidence to back his claims.

Maryam Sanda heads to Supreme Court as Appeal Court upholds her death sentence

Maryam Sanda, the woman sentenced to death for killing her husband, plans to file an appeal at the Supreme Court in a bid to overturn the judgements of the lower courts.

Her counsel and a Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), Joe Gadzama, disclosed this to reporters on Friday in Abuja.

This followed the judgement of the Court of Appeal in Abuja which upheld the verdict of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) High Court sentencing Sanda to death by hanging for killing Bilyaminu Bello.

Late Bilyaminu, who was stabbed to death, was the son of former National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Mr Haliru Bello.

Record breaking baby is '27 years old' and just 18 months younger than her mum

A miracle baby was technically 27 years old when she was born and just 18 months younger than her own mum thanks to the wonders of science.

Molly Everette Gibson was born using an embryo frozen in October 1992 – only 18 months after her mother, Tina, now 29, was born in April 1991.

'Miracle Molly' broke the previous record held by her sister, Emma Wren, who spent 24 years as an embryo on ice before she was born in November 2017.

Both full genetic embryos were frozen together and transferred to Tina's uterus three years apart.

Biden's popular vote margin over Trump tops 7 million

President-elect Joe Biden's margin over President Donald Trump in the nationwide popular vote is now more than 7 million votes and may continue to grow as several states continue counting votes.

Biden's lead over Trump is the second largest since 2000, and is about two and a half times larger than Hillary Clinton's popular vote lead over Trump in 2016.

As of Friday morning, Biden had won about 81.2 million votes, the most votes a candidate has won in US history, and Trump had won about 74.2 million. Trump's vote count makes him the second-highest vote earner in American history.

Despite Biden's decisive victory and the Trump administration starting the formal presidential transition process, the President has refused to concede the race and continues to make baseless claims about widespread voter fraud.

Police withdraw suit against #EndSARS probe panels

The Nigeria Police Force (NPF) has applied to withdraw the suit it filed to stop various panels probing allegations of rights abuses and other acts of impunity by police officials, particularly men of the disbanded Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS).

The suit marked: FHC/ABJ/CS/1492/2020 was filed on November 9, 2020 by the NPF, through its lawyer, O. M. Atoyebi (SAN).

In the notice of discontinuance filed early on Friday by a lawyer to the NPF, Festus Ibude, reads: “Take notice that the plaintiff herein intends to and doth hereby wholly withdraws its suit against all the defendants.”

Listed as defendants in the case include the Attorney-General of the Federation (AGF), National Human Rights Commission (NHRC), the attorneys-general of the states and chairmen of the panels set up by the states.

Truck crushes tricycle rider to death in Rivers

An unidentified commercial tricycle rider was crushed to death on Friday after a long truck ran over him just in front of the Slaughter Market at Eliozu, along East West Road, Obia-Akpor Local Government area of Rivers State.

It was learnt that that the man was attempting to cross the road when the sad incident occurred.

The victim was said to be a Keke tricycle rider.

Court grants Fayose permission to travel abroad for medical treatment

A Federal High Court sitting in Lagos, Southwest Nigeria on Friday granted permission to former Governor of Ekiti State, Ayodele Fayose, to travel abroad for medical treatment.

Fayose is standing trial for alleged money laundering of N2.2 billion.

The presiding judge, Chukwjekwu Aneke granted the order following an application filed before the court by Fayose’s lawyer, Ola Olanipekun (SAN).

The EFCC’s prosecutor, Rotimi Jacobs (SAN) did not oppose the request, thereafter, Justice Aneke adjourned the case till January 22, 2021 for continuation of trial.

Man sets woman on fire after learning she was in ‘romantic relationship’ with stepdad

A jealous Florida man set his late mother’s caretaker on fire this week after learning the woman was in a “romantic relationship” with his stepdad, authorities said.

Luis Quinonez, 53, is accused of pouring gasoline on the victim and igniting her in flames in a senseless attack Monday night in the southeast town of Lantana, according to an arrest report obtained by the South Florida Sun Sentinel.

Neighbors reported seeing the 61-year-old woman running from the scene while on fire. She sustained second- and third-degree burns and was taken to a Miami hospital in critical condition, the Sentinel reported.

Quinonez, who said he’d been drinking before the incident, was taken into custody and charged with attempted first-degree murder. He was being held without bond Thursday, jail records show.

India Police arrest three Nigerians with 220 Cocaine grammes

The Mumbai Police Special Squad in India on Thursday, December 3, busted a drug peddling syndicate and arrested three Nigerian nationals in the Malad and Royal Palm areas of the town.

The Nigerians were found with 220 grammes of cocaine worth over Rs 22 lakhs ($29,833.32).

They were arrested by the Special Squad of Deputy Commissioner of Police Zone XI along with the Bangur Nagar police.

According to an official, the police, while acting on a tip-off, laid a trap at Link Road in Malad and first apprehended 38-year-old Uche James after he arrived to deliver the contraband on Wednesday, December 2.

A Nigerian lady, Olasumbo who is a singer has revealed she was attacked by robbers while on her way home in Oyo state.

She said she had just finished performing at the burial of the Oyo State governor, Seyi Makinde's mother, and was on her way home when she was attacked by robbers at Ikolaba close to the state government house.

Middle-aged trader stabs wife to death over money in Lagos

There was shock on Adekunle Street in the Oshodi area of Lagos after a middle-aged man, Ifeanyi Nwagboroga, stabbed his wife, Faith Ebubeeze, several times on her body until she died over an argument bordering on money for the family.

SaharaReporters learnt from a police report that after the argument ensued, Nwagboroga, a trader, tied his wife’s mouth, cut off her two hands and started stabbing her.

The police at the Ire-Akari division later arrested Nwagboroga after his wife’s younger brother, Emmanuel Onyeka, who lived on a neighbouring street, brought the matter to the attention of the operatives.

Appeal Court affirms death sentence for Maryam Sanda

The Court of Appeal in Abuja, on Friday, upheld the conviction and death sentence that was handed to Maryam Sanda, daughter-inlaw to a former Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Mr Mohammed Bello Haliru.

The appellate court, in a unanimous judgement by a three-man panel of Justices led by Justice Stephen Adah, said it found no reason to set aside the verdict of a High Court of the Federal Capital Territory, which okayed Maryam to die by hanging.

It held that the 20 grounds of appeal Maryam filed to challenge her conviction and sentence lacked merit and deserved to be dismissed.

Maryam, who was on January 27, found guilty of stabbing her husband, Bilyamin Bello, a real estate developer to death at their Abuja residence in 2017, had in her appeal, maintained that she was denied fair hearing by the trial court.
