Lagos Governor, Sanwo-Olu tests positive for Covid-19

Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu has tested positive for Covid-19, the state’s Commissioner for Health announced.

Akin Abayomi said the Governor is currently experiencing “mild symptoms and fatigue typical of a mild case of Covid-19.”

In a statement, he added that Sanwo-Olu is receiving treatment and is being closely monitored at home by a clinical team from the Infectious Disease Hospital in Yaba.

“Mr. Sanwo-Olu is doing well on treatment and rest and we are confident that he will recover quickly and clear the virus,” the statement said.

Lekki Shooting: CNN shuns Lagos Panel... says you lack jurisdiction to summon

The Cable News Network (CNN) has refused to appear before the Lagos Judicial Panel of Inquiry and Restitution of Victims of SARS Related Abuses.

The Lagos panel had invited CNN after the news platform published two major investigations into the events of October 20 at the Lekki toll gate.

The CNN report indicted the Nigerian military with the claims that they shot at unarmed protesters who had convened at the Lekki Toll Gate.

The panel’s summons was issued to CNN on November 28.

She recounted the fear she felt when she was pregnant with him, having lost her first pregnancy.

Ten persons die in accident on transit to Nigerian Navy recruitment exam

Ten persons have been killed in a motor accident in Ringim Local Government Area of Jigawa State.

An eyewitness said  the incident occurred around 6:00am along Abdullahi Mai Masallaci Arabic Secondary School in Ringim town.

He said the incident happened when the driver of a Golf 3 wagon rammed into a parked sugarcane truck and ten persons died on the spot while others were taken to the hospital for medical attention.

He said the passengers were on their way for the Nigerian Navy examination in Kano.

Suspected hoodlums hack security guard to death in Ibadan

A security guard working at Tybato filling station was on Saturday morning found dead in Moniya area, Akinyele local government, Oyo.

The guard simply identified as Semiu was hacked to death by suspected hoodlums who had stormed Asanmajana area on robbery operation.

The community security guards were said to have resisted the hoodlums from carting out their operation as they exchanged gun shot, Friday midnight.

The situation, it was gathered from residence led the hoodlums entering into the filling station.

Medical doctor drowns in Ebonyi Hotel swimming pool

A medical house officer doing his housemanship with Alex Ekwueme Federal University Teaching Hospital, Abakaliki, Ebonyi State, ThankGod Odo, has reportedly drowned in a swimming pool in a popular hotel in the state’s capital city.

The deceased hailed from Ohaukwu Local Government Area of Ebonyi state and had gone to the hotel to swim with his friends on Thursday.

Odo, it was gathered, swims very well and even taught people how to swim.

Bandits raid school in Katsina state while Buhari in Daura

Bandits, ignoring the presence of President Buhari in Daura, Katsina state have attacked the Government Science Secondary School in Ƙanƙara.

Kankara lies south of the state, about 197km from Daura.

The school principal, Malam Usman Abubakar told Channels TV that the bandits were armed with sophisticated weapons.

He said they attacked the students around 10.15 pm on Friday, in an operation that lasted about an hour.

Nigerians spend over $1b buying citizenship, golden visas abroad

Some rich Nigerians have spent over $1billion this year alone buying themselves citizenship of other countries or golden visas as they plan ahead for safe haven should Nigeria collapse as a nation.

The $1billion is a conservative estimate, given the number of applications processed by the citizenship advisory firms.

According to a report published by Al Jazeera, more Nigerians paid for citizenship or golden visas this year, than in other years.

At London-based Henley & Partners, one of the world’s largest citizenship advisory firms, applications by Nigerians increased by 185 percent during the eight months to September 2020, making them the second-largest nationality to apply for such schemes after Indians.

Iceberg Slim celebrates two years of alcohol abstinence

US-based Nigerian rapper, Olusegun Olowokere- Iceberg Slim, has taken to social media to celebrate two years of his alcohol abstinence.

The rapper who took to the gram to appreciate himself said the journey was not planned, but started just as a personal challenge.

He wrote;

“Two years ago, I decided to stop drinking alcohol. Many people asked questions, while many had assumptions as to “Why?”. The truth is, I woke up one day and decided to challenge myself. I said to myself “Self”, and I replied “Yes?”, how long do you think you can go without drinking alcohol?!

Nigeria records 796 Covid-19 new cases, total now 72,140

Nigeria on Friday registered 796 new cases, highest single -day COVID-19 infections in 24 hours, the Nigeria Centre For Disease Control (NCDC) said on its verified website.

The new infections showed an increase of 51 cases over the previous record of 745 registered cases, almost six months ago on 19 June, 2020. 

The agency said that the 796 were diagnosed with COVID-19 in 15 states and the Federal Capital Territory, bring the total nationally to 72,140 with 1,90 deaths. FCT led with 258 cases of the virus, while Lagos came second with 248, and Kaduna state in third position with 117, NCDC said, citing other states with new infections to include; Katsina (52), Ogun (27), Kwara (23), Gombe (22), Adamawa (17), Plateau (15), Kano (6), Rivers (2), Ondo (2), Ekiti (2), Nasarawa (2), Sokoto (2) and Taraba (1).

Gov Ortom visits victims of herdsmen attack in hospital, takes over medical bills

Governor of Benue State, Samuel Ortom on Saturday visited victims of herders attack at the hospital.

Armed herdsmen invaded the community last night and killed four persons, leaving many others severely injured.

The victims who escaped the attack are receiving treatment at the Benue State University Teaching Hospital,Makurdi.

Ortom, addressing newsmen during the visit said the State Government would take over the treatment of those injured and are being treated.

Many Nigerian graduates can’t read or write - Minister

Minister of Education, Malam Adamu Adamu, has decried continuous fall in the standard of education in the country. Adamu, who spoke in Yola, the Adamawa State capital during official commissioning of completed projects in the college, lamented a situation in which graduates can neither read nor write in a tolerable manner.

He said the situation was a cause for concern, adding that students and teachers need to sit up and face their tasks squarely if the situation is to be reversed.

“Some graduates of tertiary institutions across the country cannot read or write applications,” said the minister who was represented by the Director of Tertiary Education in the Federal Ministry of Education, Hajia Rakiya Gambo Iliyasu.

Saraki’s brother-in-law, Dapo Ojora dies of gunshot wounds

Dapo Ojora, the polo loving son of Otunba Adekunle Ojora is dead, via fatal gunshot wounds. The death occurred few years after he survived a ghastly auto-bike crash.

It was not clear whether he deliberately shot himself or whether it was a case of an accidental discharge from a gun. Street Journal that broke the news said it was a case of suicide.

Dapo was the second son of the businessman to die within 10 years. His senior brother, Adegboyega, a.k.a Gbegi died on 10 April 2011.

Dapo also was a senior brother to Toyin Saraki, wife of former senate president, Bukola Saraki.

John Dumelo’s wife writes comforting message to him after he lost out in Ghanaian parliament election

John Dumelo’s wife, Gifty has penned down a comforting message to him after he lost out on being elected as a Ghanaian parliament member.

Christmas celebrations could turn to tears – WHO chief

The World Health Organization (WHO) on Friday cautioned that Christmas celebrations could turn to tears if people fail to keep up their guard against COVID-19 during the festive season.

Speaking to at a news conference, WHO chief, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, said the period could turn to sadness if precautions are disregarded.

Tedros said the number of deaths in the coronavirus pandemic was surging and urged people to think very carefully about their holiday season plans.

In his words, “The festive season is a time to relax and celebrate but… celebration can very quickly turn to sadness if we fail to take the right precautions. 

Gunmen kill Oyo PDP chieftain, Fatai Aborode [photo]

The Police have confirmed the murder of Dr Fatai Aborode, a chieftain of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) in Oyo State, by unknown gunmen.

Aborode was allegedly killed in his farm along Apodun road, Igangan in Ibarapa North Local Government Area of the state on Friday by gunmen suspected to be Fulani herdsmen.

The Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) in the state, SP Olugbenga Fadeyi, confirmed the incident on Saturday in Ibadan.

It was gathered that the PDP chieftain was the Chief Executive Officer of Kunfayakun Green Treasures Limited.

Senators express shock as petroleum ministry spends N116m on pens, others

Members of the Senate Public Accounts Committee expressed shock on Thursday when the report of the Auditor General for the Federation revealed that officials of the Federal Ministry of Petroleum Resources spent N116m to buy biros, letterhead and toners in one year.

The breakdown of the expenditure showed that the ministry spent N14.5m to purchase Schneider biros, N46m to print the ministry’s letterhead and N56m to procure toner for its photocopy machines.

The AuGF stated this in his 2015 audit report currently being scrutinised by the Senate committee led by Senator Mathew Urhoghide.

Car hits multiple protesters in New York, causing injuries

A motorist struck about half a dozen people taking part in a protest in New York City on Friday, causing injuries but no deaths, police and eyewitnesses said.

A spokesman for the New York Police Department told AFP that the vehicle hit “multiple” people in Manhattan’s Murray Hill area at 4:08 pm (21:08 GMT).

“An unknown number of people have been injured. They have been taken to various hospitals. It is not thought that any of the injuries are life-threatening,” he said.

The spokesman added that the driver, a woman, had stayed at the scene and was in custody.

Rapper Lil Wayne pleads guilty to firearms charges

US rapper Lil Wayne on Friday pleaded guilty to possession of a firearm by a convicted felon over an incident dating back to last year, US media reported a federal offence that could see him sentenced to up to 10 years in prison.

The 38-year-old artist, whose real name is Dwayne Michael Carter Jr, was found to be carrying a gun and bullets when police searched a private plane in Miami in December last year.

“Your honour, I plead guilty,” he reportedly told US District Judge Kathleen Williams during a virtual hearing.

The Miami Herald said that Lil Wayne who has a home in south Florida admitted the gold-plated pistol found in his luggage was his. He told police the weapon had been given to him as a Father’s Day gift.

Many dead as trucks collide, burst into flames in Ondo

Tragedy struck on Friday evening in Ondo State following an accident which claimed about five lives along Ikare-Akoko/Owo highway.

The accident occurred in Akungba-Akoko, headquarters of Akoko South West Local Government Area of the state.

It was gathered that the accident which involved three trucks, happened at the Okerigbo Hill near the main gate of the Adekunle Ajasin University situated in the community.

One of the trucks, which was said to be loaded with bags of cement, suffered a brake failure while descending the hill from Ikare-Akoko end of the road.

Sleeping with a dog in bed is actually better than sharing one with your partner, study says

New research has found that sleeping with a dog in your bed is actually good for you. In fact, it’s better than sharing a bed with a human. 

According to a study conducted by Christy L. Hoffman, from Canisius College in New York, the sleeping patterns of our four-legged friends closely mirror those of humans.

 The study spoke to 962 women across the US, 55% of which shared the bed with at least one dog, while 57% shared the bed with a human partner and 31% shared the bed with at least one cat.

Dogs were found to be less disruptive to sleep than both human partners and cats – which makes sense when you think about the battles some partners face with duvet hogging.

Trump to be 'most prolific execution president' in 100 years

Donald Trump's final days in the White House will oversee a rush of federal executions before he leaves. Five lethal injections are scheduled before President-elect Joe Biden's January 20 inauguration.

The move breaks a 130-year-old precedent of pausing executions amid a change of Governments.

If all five are completed, it would make Trump America’s most prolific executioner leader in more than a century.

He will have overseen the federal executions of 13 death row inmates since July of this year. The five executions began this week, starting with Brandon Bernard.

The 40-year-old was executed  by lethal injection for his 2000 conviction in the 1999 kidnapping and killing of youth ministers Todd and Stacie Bagley on a military reservation in Texas.

Whoopi Goldberg to star in 'Sister Act 3' nearly 3 decades

Whoopi Goldberg is set to don her nun's habit once again. Amid the headline-packed Disney Investor Day, the studio revealed that Goldberg has signed on to star in and produce a third film in the Sister Act series -- alongside Tyler Perry.

"Sister Act 3 is in development! 🎤" Disney tweeted on Thursday. "@WhoopiGoldberg returns to star and produce, with @TylerPerry as producer as well."

The studio also announced that the third film "will premiere on @DisneyPlus" instead of a traditional theatrical release. They did not yet reveal when fans can expect to watch.

Landlords, tenants flee as gunmen write Lagos community, threaten attack on Christmas Day

Some landlords and tenants of Dejuwogbo community, Oke-Ota Ona, Ikorodu, have fled their homes following a threat notice pasted in the neigbourhood by gunmen suspected to be robbers.

Those who have not temporarily relocated are apprehensive about their safety as they endure fearful nights.

City Round learnt that the locals woke up last Saturday to the posters of masked armed men pasted in strategic points in the community.

In the notice, the gunmen threatened to attack the community on Christmas Eve, Christmas Day and Boxing Day, and demanded maximum cooperation.

Breaking! Governor Obaseki testifies at RCCG Camp.. says my victory came from God

Governor Obaseki of Edo State minutes ago testified at The Redeemed Christian Church of God's main camp on Lagos-Ibadan expressway, about how God gave hom victory at the just concluded Edo Governorship election.

Obaseki said about a year ago, himself and wife wife came to the camp ground to see Pastor Adeboye and told him about the challenges he was already having at his party.

He said the Pastor assured him all will be well. Then during the pandemic lockdown he decided to visit him at home and he told him not to fear, that he would WON the election.

''God proved only He has power when men tried to play God. He came out to say God is God. Only He has power only He gives power'', Obaseki said as he returned all glory to God.

Enugu Poly rector, Nwankwo jailed for scamming students

Dr Isidore Ojukwu Nwankwo, a former rector of Enugu Polytechnic has been sent to to prison for scamming his students.

Justice N.I. Buba of the Federal High Court, Enugu handed over the sentence on Thursday.

Nwankwo was prosecuted by the Enugu Zonal Office of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, on a six-count charge, bordering on conspiracy and obtaining money under false pretence to the tune of N1,153,700.00.

The money was obtained by fraud from some students of the school in contravention of Section 1(1)(a) of Advance Fee Fraud and Other Fraud Related Offences Act, 2006 and Punishable under Section 1(3) of the Same Act.

FIFA announces three-man final nominees for the Best Player in The World, others [Full list]

FIFA, on Friday, announced their final three-man shortlist for this year’s Men Best Player of the Year, Puskas Awards and Best Goalkeeper.

The world football governing body also announced their final three-man shortlist for this year’s Men Best Coach of the year, Women’s Best Player and among other awards in a post via its website.

The nominees were chosen by a panel of football experts.

The winner would be announced during The Best FIFA Football Awards ceremony on December 17, 2020, and it will be streamlined live on FIFA’s website.

US reacts as Nigeria police arrest and parades suspected kidnappers of its citizen

The United States have commended the Nigerian Police for arresting two members of a trans-national kidnap syndicate involved in the abduction of its citizen, Philippe Nathan Walton.

Nigeria Police Force earlier said it arrested two suspects in connection with the abduction of Walton.

Walton was on October 28, 2020 , kidnapped at his farm in Masalata Village, Republic of Niger.

Reacting, the Assistant Secretary for the US department of state’s Bureau of African Affairs in a tweet via his Twitter account, commended the efforts being made by the Police force in capturing the suspects.

Disney will not recast Black Panther role after ‘iconic’ portrayal by Chadwick Boseman

Disney has confirmed it will not recast the role of Black Panther after Chadwick Boseman’s “iconic” portrayal of the character.

Boseman played superhero T’Challa in the 2018 Marvel blockbuster, which was a hit for critics who praised its diversity. The film scored seven nominations at the 91st Academy Awards, including best picture.

The US actor died in August at the age of 43 following a private battle against colon cancer.

Following the announcement of his death, tributes poured in for Boseman from across the entertainment industry, with many recognising the cultural impact of Boseman’s role in Black Panther. 

Black Panther 2 is due to arrive in 2022 and fans had speculated how Disney would handle Boseman’s death.
