#EndSARS: Kwara issues N180m to 48 looted businesses

Kwara State governor, AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, has presented cheques totalling N180.8 million to 48 business owners whose shops were looted during the October EndSARS protest in Ilorin, the state capital.

The cheques in varying amounts are non-refundable grants.

The government had in November engaged an independent insurance adjuster and empanelled an 11-person committee, including civic groups and representative of the business owners, to fact-check claims submitted by 342 businesses who filled an online form to benefit from a N500m SME Recovery Fund established to support the victims.

Breaking: Edo Head of Service, Anthony Okungbowa kidnapped

Edo State Head of Service, Anthony Okungbowa has been kidnapped in Benin-city.

Security sources disclosed that Okungbowa was kidnapped at gunpoint on Saturday evening and whisked to an unknown destination, while the hoodlums are yet to reach members of the family of the victim or Governor Godwin Obaseki, on the payment of ransom.

Edo Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Chidi Nwabuzor, a Superintendent of Police (SP), could not be reached for comment, at press time.

Tanker explodes on Otedola Bridge

A tanker laden with 44,000 litres of diesel was gutted by fire on Otedola Bridge along Lagos/Ibadan Expressway on Saturday evening, thereby causing panic among commuters plying the route.

The incident reportedly happened around 6pm, causing massive gridlock on the ever-busy expressway.

It was gathered that the tanker was fully loaded with 44,000 liters of AGO (diesel) and was moving toward the Berger axis of the expressway when one of its tyres suddenly burst into flames.

At the time of this report, the section of the road where the accident occurred had been cordoned off to allow emergency response agencies to put out the fire completely.

Qatar unveils its 4th World Cup stadium

The fourth Qatar World Cup arena is officially ready for games as the Ahmad Bin Ali Stadium was unveiled on Friday, two years ahead of Qatar's 2022 final.

The Ahmad Bin Ali Stadium became the fourth fully operational FIFA World Cup 2022 tournament venue to be inaugurated and it will become the new home of Al Rayyan Sports Club.

The 40,000-capacity venue will host seven matches during Qatar 2022 up to the round-of-16 stage.

"Ahmad Bin Ali Stadium is a wonderful venue for football," said FIFA president Gianni Infantino.

Covid-19: British PM imposes fresh total lockdown on London

Prime Minister Boris Johnson imposed a full lockdown on London and large parts of southeast England and told the public across the country to avoid travel, in a desperate attempt to stop a new strain of coronavirus that is spreading rapidly in the UK.

After emergency talks with his most senior officials, Johnson canceled plans to ease pandemic restrictions for five days during the holiday. Household mixing will be banned in London and the south-east and socializing restricted to just Christmas Day across the rest of England.

The premier announced a new Tier 4 will apply in the hot-spot areas around the capital from Sunday, with all non-essential shops closing, millions of people ordered to stay at home and all foreign travel banned except for essential purposes. Johnson urged people across England to “stay local” and not travel far. He promised the new rules will be reviewed on Dec. 30.

Billionaire Ray Dalio’s son dies after crashing his car into a store

The son of the owner of the world’s largest hedge fund died Thursday after he crashed his car into a Verizon store in Greenwich, Conn., authorities have just revealed. 

Devon Dalio, 42, was the son of Raymond Dalio, 71, the billionaire founder of Bridgewater Associates, a hedge fund he founded in 1975.

Dalio’s Audi crashed into the Verizon store at a shopping center Thursday afternoon and burst into flames. Police are still investigating the cause of the crash which almost destroyed the store.

Dalio apparently crossed over a parking strip and mounted a curb before hitting the doors and drove all the way into the store, police told the Greenwich Time.

Nine Covid-19 patients die in Turkey hospital fire

Nine Covid-19 patients died Saturday in a fire in an intensive care unit at a hospital in southern Turkey, officials said.

An oxygen cylinder exploded in the ICU unit at Sanko University Hospital in Gaziantep, killing nine patients aged between 56 and 85. The fire was put out quickly and 10 other patients survived, the Associated Press reported.

Government figures show that Turkey ICU units currently have a 74 percent bed occupancy rate due to the pandemic, but medical officials say the number is higher and that Turkish hospitals are crowded with coronavirus patients.

Kankara schoolboys abduction not stage-managed -Lai Mohammed

The Federal Government has described as senseless, the claim in certain quarters that the abduction and release of over 300 schoolboys from Government Science Secondary School, Kankara, Katsina State, was stage-managed.

The Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, dismissed the claim on Saturday when he spoke on NTA Good Morning Nigeria’ programme.

Lagosians can’t afford fresh total lockdown, Sanwo-Olu says

Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, says the people of the state cannot afford yet another total lockdown as Lagos enters the second wave of the novel coronavirus pandemic.

The economic capital of Nigeria was locked down for over five weeks between March and May this year as part of measures to curb the spread of COVID-19. The lockdown had a tremendous effect on economic activities with the Lagos Chamber of Commerce and Industry putting the loss at about N3bn in the period under review.

Many jobs were also lost as airlines, hotels, banks, amongst others cut their workforce due to the crushing effect of the lockdown.

Sanwo-Olu, in a statement on Saturday, said a fresh lockdown would be inimical to the state’s healing economy.

Kogi first class monarch kidnapped at mosque

The Acting Eje of Ankpa, Ankpa Local Government Area, Kogi State, Alhaji Shaibu Usman, was on Friday kidnapped by gunmen.

Alhaji Usman was abducted while entering the mosque around 5.30 am.

In its reaction on Friday, the Kogi State Police Command said it would not rest until the monarch’s release was secured.

The police said his abductors were yet to contact his family.

Lekki Shooting: Protester allegedly shot by soldiers now amputee, lawyer tells panel

Lucky Philemon, a 27-year-old Nigerian who joined the protest against police brutality and extrajudicial killings, has lost his left leg to the October 20 Lekki toll gate shooting incident.

Ezekiel Bamgbala, the counsel to the victim, said this Friday at the judicial panel hearing cases of police brutality in Lagos when the matter was called for mention.

Mr Bamgbala said his client suffered serious injuries as a consequence of the October 20 Lekki shooting and became an amputee as a result – with his left leg amputated.

The lawyer told the panel that the victim was willing to give his testimony if permitted by the panel.

Jupiter, Saturn to appear side by side for first time in 800 years on Monday night

Jupiter and Saturn, the two largest planets in the solar system, will appear side by side in the sky Monday night for the first time in almost 800 years.

The titanic planets “will appear just a tenth of a degree apart,” which is equivalent to the thickness of a dime, according to NASA.

NASA added that sky watchers could get a glimpse of the two planets and their moons through binoculars or a small telescope.

The event, called the “Great Conjuncture” will occur on the winter solstice, the longest night of the year.

The last time Jupiter and Saturn had such a close pairing was in July 1623.

Outrage as Texas hospital appears to give worker fake covid-19 vaccine shot... as many vow never to take it

A Texas hospital is under fire after eagle-eyed viewers claimed the Covid vaccine healthcare workers received on TV appeared to be fake.

Camera crews were invited to the University Medical Center of El Paso to capture five of its front-line workers get the coveted coronavirus vaccine.

Videos on social media showing paramedic Ricardo Martinez getting the supposed shot raised concerns among skeptical viewers who noticed that the syringe was already pushed down.

“Clearly that syringe was EMPTY and the plunger was already down. Where’s the bandaid? Yeah, nice try! We are not fooled!” Facebook user Barbara Siira wrote.

Relatives of dead primary school teachers in Akwa Ibom protest unpaid gratuities, entitlements

The forum of next of kin/widows to late retired primary School teachers in Akwa Ibom State, on Friday, staged a peaceful protest over the delay in the payment of their entitlements, which according to them amounted to over N5.2billion.

The protesters comprising mainly widows and children of deceased retired primary school teachers said the gratuities and the 7.5% contributory pensions of their deceased fathers/husbands which have been bequeathed onto them by virtue of being the next of kin, has remained unpaid over five years of getting clearance and undergoing various screenings.

The protesters displayed various placards with inscriptions such as: “empty promises are too much, pay entitlements of widows/next of kin of late primary school teachers, don’t take from widows etc.”

Addressing the Press, the Vice Chairman of the group, Godwin Usoh alleged that since the inception of the current administration, no primary school teacher in the State, both the living and the dead had been paid gratuity despite their efforts.

Kogi Polytechnic expels 34 students for exam malpractice, cultism, certificate forgery

The Academic Board of Kogi State Polytechnic has expelled 34 students for exam misconduct, cultism and certificate forgery. 

This was contained in a statement issued by Head, Public Relations and Protocol Unit of the institution, Uredo Omale.

At a meeting held on Thursday, the management considered reports of various committees and approved the expulsion of the 34 students. The expelled students were from different schools and departments of the institution. 

Some of the expelled students were part of the “Examination Magic Centre” syndicate, recently uncovered by the Institution at the Sarkin Noma area in Lokoja metropolis.

Abia state Governor, Okezie Ikpeazu, on Friday hosted the third ‘One-Day-Governor’ selected during his administration and the first male for such appointment in the state.

Master Nicholas Ogunji, is a 17-year-old student of Adventist Technical Secondary School, Ohafia and according to the state governor, the One-Day-Governor during his official outing helped free some inmates after paying off their fines at Afaraukwu Correctional Centre.

In a thread of tweets, Ikpeazu in his announcement of the development said; “We currently have 17 years old Master Nicholas Ogunji of Adventist Technical Secondary School, Ohafia, as our One-Day-Governor.

“He is the 3rd One-Day-Governor under my administration. Part of his first official outing was a visit to the Afaraukwu Correctional Centre where he helped free some inmates after paying off their fines.

How bandits tortured us in six nights of horror – Freed Katsina schoolboys

Some of the 344 schoolboys kidnapped in Katsina State by suspected bandits and released on Thursday, six days later have recounted their experiences in the den of the kidnappers.

The pupils were kidnapped last Friday from the Government Science Secondary School in Kankara. Boko Haram had on Tuesday claimed responsibility for the kidnapping though some government officials had refuted the claim that the terrorist group was involved in the mass abduction.

Following their release, the pupils looked dirty and tired when they arrived in Katsina on Friday morning where they narrated their ordeals in the hands of the bandits.

They said shortly after their abduction, the abductors divided them into groups and marched them into a forest with thorny plants, where they slept in the cold.

10-year-old girl throws stepbrother inside well in Akure

A 10-year-old girl, Suliya Abubakar, said she threw her stepbrother, Usman Abubakar, aged 20 months, inside a well because her stepmother maltreats her.

Abubakar said this while she was being paraded alongside 34 suspects of other crimes, by the Ondo State Commissioner of Police, Mr Salami Bolaji, on Friday, in Akure.

The other suspects were paraded for offences ranging from armed robbery, arson, fraud, killing, theft, to unlawful possession of firearms among others.

Abubakar said that she did not know that Usman will die and that she carried out the action out of frustration and because she was being maltreated by her stepmother.

North Korean fishing captain 'is publicly executed for listening to foreign radio while at sea'

A North Korean fishing boat captain was executed in public for listening to a banned foreign radio station, it is claimed. 

The US government-funded Radio Free Asia claims the mariner was put to death after admitting he had listened to its broadcasts for more than 15 years. 

Aged in his 40s, the man had reportedly been picking up the foreign airwaves while out at sea and listening to news broadcasts and radio programming. 

A source told RFA that the boat captain, known as Choi, had been executed by firing squad in front of 100 other fisheries workers. 

Toddler ‘strangled to death & thrown in oven by grandparents’

A toddler was allegedly strangled to death and thrown in an oven by his grandparents after he ‘cried too much’ while they were babysitting. 

Devastated parents Maria, 20, and Dmitry, 25, returned home to find only the clothes of their son Dima, 2. They discovered his remains dumped outside the house in the snow, according to law enforcement in Russia. 

The grandparents, aged 52 and 48, were both ‘heavily drunk’ as they became irritated with the little boy’s tears, Plohie Novosti reports. 

The accused couple, who have not been named in Russian media, was arrested on suspicion of murder after the tragedy in the Kuybyshevsky district of Novokuznetsk.

Rio and Kate are already father and stepmother to children Lorenz, 13, Tate, 11, and Tia, nine, from his marriage to his late wife Rebecca Ellison.

Nigeria to start manufacturing vaccines soon – NAFDAC

The Director-General of the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC), Prof. Mojisola Adeyeye, Friday expressed confidence that Nigeria would soon start manufacturing vaccines, with the upgrading of existing laboratories across the country.

She disclosed that achieving the ISO 9001 in June 2019, which is the world’s most recognised Quality Management System (QMS) standard, places the country in good standing to strive to get to maturity level three, which enables the country manufacture its own vaccines.

Adeyeye also noted that the Agency is leveraging technology to trace vaccines, especially when the covid-19 vaccines arrives the country. She explained that this will enable it track and trace vaccines received, to ensure that they are safe and monitored for adverse reactions on patients.
