Canada also detects first cases of UK Covid variant

The first two cases of a particularly infectious coronavirus variant that recently emerged in Britain have been confirmed in Canada, health authorities said today.

“The cases are a couple from Durham with no known travel history, exposure or high-risk contacts,” the acting chief medical officer for Ontario said in a statement.

The couple has been placed in isolation, according to the statement, the same day that Ontario reimposed a lockdown for several weeks due to a spike in Covid-19 cases.

Russian female politician beats 12-year-old son to death

A Russian politician has been sentenced to 14 years in prison for beating her 12-year-old son to death with a dumbbell during an argument, reports said Thursday.

Authorities said Galina Morozova, 56, bludgeoned her son, Alexander Parakhnyakov, in March because he had defied her and snuck out to go to a sleepover, according to The Sun.

She then reported the boy missing, playing the frantic mother in public pleas on social media and taking part in searches in the city of Astrakhan, the report said.

Her son’s body was found three months later, encased in concrete in the foundation of his older brother’s house, where police said Morozova buried him.

Egypt hospital fire kills seven Covid-19 patients

A fire at a hospital north of Cairo on Saturday killed seven coronavirus patients, security and judicial sources said.

The blaze in the intensive care unit of the hospital in Obour district, on the outskirts of Cairo, also injured five other people, the sources said.

It was not immediately clear what caused the fire, the sources said, adding prosecutors had launched an investigation into the incident.

Firefighters were dispatched to the facility and stopped the blaze from spreading, local media reported.

The chairman of a Netflix-affiliated Chinese gaming company who was poisoned this month has died and a co-worker remains the prime suspect in the shocking case, according to reports.

Yoozoo Group boss Lin Qi -- executive producer of the streaming giant’s adaptation of The Three-Body Problem series of Chinese sci-fi books -- was first hospitalized on December 16.

Chinese media outlets have identified a senior executive at Yoozoo, Xu Yao, as having targeted Lin after an internal dispute within the rising firm.

Now in custody, Xu headed the company’s film and television division and was chosen to oversee all projects related to The Three-Body Problem.

Spain confirms first cases of UK Covid strain

Four cases of a coronavirus variant believed to be particularly infectious that recently emerged in Britain have been confirmed in Madrid, the regional government said Saturday, the first cases detected in Spain.

All four cases involved people who recently arrived from the UK, the Madrid regional government’s deputy health chief Antonio Zapatero told a news conference.

“The patients are not seriously ill, we know that this strain is more transmissible, but it does not cause more serious illness,” he said.

“There is no need for alarm,” Zapatero added.

Govt announce total closure of Third Mainland Bridge from midnight today

The Third Mainland Bridge in Lagos will be totally shut for 72 hours from midnight Saturday, Federal Controller of Works, Olukayode Popoola said.

The closure is to allow for casting of concrete on the expansion joints.

Popoola said that the shutdown will last till midnight on Tuesday.

Repair work on the bridge began late July and was to end in January.

He died after an illness at the age of 81.

The late monarch was crowned king of Igbajo in 1990, a town in Boluwaduro Local Government Area of Osun State.

Fashade was born on April 17, 1939, in Abeokuta, Ogun State.

Nigeria records 712 new Covid-19 cases, total now 82,747

The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) has recorded 712new cases of COVID-19, bringing the total number of infections in the country to 82,747.

The NCDC disclosed this on its official Twitter handle on Friday.

“On the 25th of December 2020, 712 new confirmed cases and 4 deaths were recorded in Nigeria.

“Till date, 82747 cases have been confirmed, 70239 cases have been discharged and 1246 deaths have been recorded in 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory.

“The 712 new cases are reported from 20 states- Lagos (388), FCT (77), Kwara (39), Katsina (35), Bauchi (33), Plateau (22), Ogun (18), Akwa Ibom (16), Delta (13), Kaduna (12), Osun (12), Yobe (11), Sokoto (10), Kebbi (8), Enugu (6), Edo (5), Ondo (3), Niger (2), Kano (1), and Oyo (1),” the NCDC said.

Anthony Joshua said he thought the #EndSARs protests which rocked Nigeria in October was a fight against a virus Severe acute respiratory syndrome which also has the SARS acronym.

Why we disengaged 2,414 teachers –Kwara Government

Kwara State government has explained why it disengaged 2,414 teachers from the service of the State Universal Basic Education Board.

The teachers’ disengagement was announced in a statement titled, ‘Kwara govt takes stand on 2019 SUBEB workers, offsets pending seven months’ salaries. New employment portal opens January.’

The statement was signed by the Press Secretary, state Ministry of Education and Human Capital Development, Mr Yakub Ali-Agan.

The statement indicted that the sacked teachers were recruited in the twilight of the administration of former Governor Abdulfatah Ahmed.

Muslims attend Kaduna Church to celebrate with Christians

Lagos police bust three robbery suspects terrorising Ikeja

The Lagos State Police Command has arrested three robbery suspects terrorising Ikeja area of the State.

The command also said it has beefed up security during the Yuletide period, especially to apprehend traffic robbers.

A statement issued by the command’s spokesman, Muyiwa Adejobi on Friday, said the operatives of the Rapid Response Squad (RRS) during one of the command’s undercover operations around Ikeja Area, arrested three suspected traffic robbers in Agidingbi, Ikeja, at about 11.30pm on Tuesday.

“The suspects, on sighting the RRS operatives, took to their heels but were given a hot chase by the police before they were eventually arrested. During preliminary interrogation, the suspects confessed to have been terrorising and responsible for some traffic robberies and other crimes at Isheri, Ojodu, Berger, Motorways, Agidingbi, Ketu, Alapere and Ogudu,” he said.

The remains of Alhaji Musa Saleh-Kwankwaso, the father of former Kano State Governor, Rabiu Musa-Kwankwaso have been buried in Kano.

Sale-Kwankwaso, who until his death was the Makaman Karaye, died in the early hours of Friday, in Kano.

He was 93.

The funeral prayer was led by a renowned Kano-based Islamic scholar, Sheikh Aminu Daurawa, who prayed for the repose of the deceased’s soul and for the family to have the fortitude to bear the loss.

NMA raises alarm as COVID-19 kills 20 doctors in one week

The Nigerian Medical Association on Friday raised alarm that the second wave of COVID-19 has been merciless on medical doctors.

Dr. Enema Amodu, FCT NMA chairman told journalists in Abuja that no less than 20 members of the association have lost their lives to the virus in the last one week.

Amodu said the doctors were infected by patients who refused to disclose their true health status when they come for treatment.

He therefore appealed to patients to always reveal their true health status and the symptoms they are experiencing during visits to hospitals and clinics to reduce the risk of infection for medical personnel.

Covid-19: NUC orders universities to stop academic activities

The National Universities Commission (NUC) has ordered Vice-Chancellors of universities to stop academic activities amid increasing Covid-19 cases.

Chris Maiyaki, Deputy Executive Secretary (Administration) signed the circular.

Classrooms, hostel accommodation, conferences and seminars are to be put on hold.

Maiyaki directed the universities to remain closed and await further instructions.

Man dies in Anambra LONE CRASH motorcycle accident

A man has been confirmed dead in an accident involving a motorcycle at Awkuzu junction, on Enugu-Onitsha expressway, Anambra State, on Christmas Day.

The Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps in Anambra, Mr Andrew Kumapayi, who confirmed the incident to the News Agency of Nigeria in Awka on Friday, said the accident occurred about 12pm.

Kumapayi said the accident was caused by speeding and loss of control.

The FRSC boss said that a total of two male adults were involved in the accident while one of them died.

Tunisia extends five-year state of emergency

The Tunisian presidency on Friday announced a six-month extension of the country’s state of emergency, in place since a 2015 attack on a presidential guard bus claimed by the Islamic State group.

President Kais Saied “decided on the six-month extension of the nationwide state of emergency, from December 26, 2020, to June 23, 2021,” a statement said.

The measure, extended continuously since late 2015, grants exceptional powers to the country’s security forces.

It allows measures to “ensure the control of the press” and for strikes and meetings that “create disorder” to be banned.

Robbers kill airport worker on his way to work around 4.20am

The family of Idowu Olawuyi has been grieving after he was stabbed to death by robbers around Bunkas junction, AIT Road in the Alagbado area of Lagos State.

Punch Metro gathered that the 33-year-old was on his way to work at the local wing of the Murtala Muhammed Airport in Ikeja, when three robbers waylaid him around 4.20am.

During the attack, it was learnt that the robbers dispossessed Idowu of his valuables and while he was struggling with them, one of the robbers reportedly stabbed him in the chest with a knife.

Idowu’s elder brother, Adedayob said the father of one died at the scene of the attack, adding that his remains were deposited in a mortuary.

Fire guts HAK Air building in Ikeja

The HAK Air building at Sowemimo street, GRA Ikeja was engulfed by fire in the early hours of Friday.

The two-storey building got burnt as a result of the explosion of the static inverter used in the building, Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) confirmed.

“Investigation conducted suggests that the fire Started from the Static Inverter used for Solar panel in the building.

The agency got to the scene of the incident and put off the fire alongside effort from Lagos Fire Service.

Lashin Ibrahim, Egypt’s head of electoral commission, has died of Covid-19 complications, Dpa reports.

Ibrahim was a deputy chief judge of the country’s top court

State-owned al-Ahram Online revealed that he tested positive for coronavirus 20 days ago.

Ibrahim had been in charge of the National Election Authority since 2017.

Police arrest two on Christmas day for stealing [photo]

The police in Ogun state on Friday arrested two men, Francis Obeya and Emmanuel Abah for stealing a motorcycle belonging to their employer.

The suspects were arrested following a distress call received from a Lagos based company at the Police Command’s control room that a dispatch rider with the company was sent to deliver a certain goods to a client but absconded with the goods and the motorcycle.

Information further revealed that the said rider was heading towards Sagamu – Ore road, Ogun state.

The Police Public Relations Officer for the State, Abimbola Oyeyemi, who disclosed this in a release, said that on the basis of the tip – off, policemen along Sagamu – Ore axis were mobilised to be on lookout for the motorcycle.

Gunmen attack ex-militant leader, Ogunbos' home in Bayelsa

Some yet-to-be identified gunmen have attacked the residence of Eris Paul, a former ex-militant leader also known as Ogunbos, at his country home in Peremabiri Community in the Southern Ijaw Local Government Area of Bayelsa State, burning down his mansion. 

According to reports, the attack occurred in the early hours of Friday, Christmas Day. 

It was learnt that armed men stormed the community in speed boats, shooting indiscriminately before setting buildings on fire.

It was learnt that Paul was able to escape without being injured or killed, though narrowly.
