Soldiers engage policemen in brawl to free detained colleague

Some soldiers have stormed a police station in the Obelawo area of Osogbo, Osun State capital, and freed a colleague detained for an undisclosed offence.

The Osun State Police Command spokesperson, Yemisi Opalola, confirmed the incident saying the command had commenced investigation into the matter.

Residents of the area had told a Punch correspondent that some men in military vest, had stormed the station around 8pm on Tuesday and freed a soldier that was in detention.

It was further learnt that the soldiers had earlier engaged the police operatives at the station in physical combat.

It was further learnt that several shots were fired during the clash, but it was not clear, which of the two groups fired the shot.

However, a security source explained that the military man that was detained had gone to the station Tuesday afternoon to secure release of a suspect.

“But the policemen detained him also; when his colleagues heard of the development, three of them came to the station and forcefully free their colleague.”

But Opalola said, “Some hoodlums attacked the station and made efforts to free some cultists arrested at Egbatedo Area of Osogbo. The attackers succeeded in freeing one Sanni Adesegun.

“We mobilised a manhunt and three of the suspects that came for the attack were arrested. Suspects in the custody claimed that some military men from Ede had taken the principal suspect away to military barrack in Ede.”
