A three-time member of the House of Representatives and Chairman, House Committee on Aviation, Nkeiruka Onyejeocha, has expressed optimism that a female President would be possible in the 2023 election provided women were given the opportunity.

According to her, if given the leverage and platform to be tested in elections, a woman could make history and succeed President Buhari in 2023.

Onyejocha representing Isuikwuato/Umunneochi federal constituency of Abia State, stated these in an interview with Journalists in Abuja on the sidelines of a conference titled: ‘Paving the Path: Forum for women’s participation in political leadership in Nigeria past, present and future.’

The event was organized by the House of Representatives Committee on Women Affairs in partnership with ActionAid Nigeria, National Institute for Legislative and Democratic Studies, and ElectHer.

Onyejeocha said, “On when Nigeria will be ripe for female Presidency, it’s possible for this 2023. Why not? Because all the people that have become the President were supported by people. If the players and kingmakers decided that a woman should become the next President, then that is it.

“But I am not caught up with that (Presidency). I am a lawmaker, I am not dreaming to become President, there are people dreaming to become President, I am supporting them.

“We are here today because of Rt. Hon. Femi Gbajabiamila has given us the platform to push for this particular Bill which he is also co-sponsoring.

“You know what it means for a Speaker, number four citizen of this country to say gender is at the centre of his administration. That is one of the cardinal points that he would ensure it takes priority over several things, including all the things he is doing for the youths, less-privileged and the handicapped.”
