34 year-old Jockey dies after being struck by car on motorway

Jockey Miguel Mena has died after being struck by a car on the motorway, aged 34.

The American Grade-1 winning rider leaves behind a wife and two young children after being killed on Halloween in Louisville, Kentucky.

He was walking next to Interstate-64. His death was ruled ‘accidental’ by the Jefferson County Coroner’s Office in Kentucky.

It was determined that Mena, who had more than 2000 victories to his name, died of blunt force trauma. An investigation is underway, but no charges against the driver of the vehicle are pending, according to police.

Police chief Rick Sanders said Mena had exited his car, crossed the eastbound lanes of the motorway and climbed over a wall before being struck by a vehicle travelling westbound.

He died at the scene.

Mike Anderson, president of Churchill Downs racetrack where Mena enjoyed some of his most famous victories, paid tribute to the jockey.

“This news is absolutely shocking, terrible and heartbreaking,” he said.

“We’ll miss his bright smile. Our deepest condolences are extended to his many friends, fellow riders and family, and our immediate thoughts are with his wife April and his daughters Naelah and Montserrat.”
