People asked to quarantine after ice cream tests positive for Covid-19 in China

Traces of Covid-19 have been detected in ice cream samples in China with health authorities currently tracing those at risk of infection.

According to a report from local Chinese media, three samples of the locally produced ice cream were found to be contaminated with the virus in the Tianjin municipality in northeast China.

About 4,836 boxes of the ice cream, produced by the Tianjin Daqiaodao Food Company, were said to have been contaminated, of which 2,089 have now been sealed in storage.

However, 935 out of the 2,747 boxes of the ice cream that entered the market were said to be in Tianjin with only 65 sold so far.

FG orders immediate closure of enrolment activities at NIMC Headquarters

The Federal government has ordered immediate closure of enrolment activities at the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) Headquarters, Abuja and the reactivation of 20 centers within the FCT to make the process of NIN enrolment much easier from Monday, January 18th 2021.

A statement signed by the Head, Corporate Communications, NIMC Kayode Adegoke advised members of the public, residents and visitors to the FCT wishing to enroll for the National Identification Number (NIN) to use any of the following NIMC centers: State Office

Tailors sewing fake Amotekun uniforms arrested in Oyo

Some unauthorised tailors said to have been sewing fake uniforms of the Oyo State Security Network Agency otherwise called Amotekun to unscrupulous elements in the state have been arrested.

Making this disclosure on ‘RESH 105.9 FM Political Circuit’ on Saturday was the Chairman of the Amotekun Corps, Gen. Kunle Togun (retd.).

The Amotekun chief said the unscrupulous elements were arrested not far to the radio station at Challenge, Ibadan.

According to him, the suspects were investigated and handed over to the police at Yemetu Police Station.

EndSARS: 12 injured staff of Nigerian Correctional Service get N3m medical support in Edo

Twelve staff of the Nigerian Correctional Service, Edo Command, were on Saturday given cheques for more than three million naira to support their treatment for injuries sustained during the #EndSARS protest.

The Controller of command, Mr Felix Lawrence, presented the cheques to the beneficiaries in Benin.

He thanked the workers for their commitment to duty and resilience.

Uganda’s Museveni wins sixth term with 58.6% vote

Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni has won a sixth term in office with 58.6 per cent of the vote, in an election disputed by his main rival Bobi Wine who trailed with 34.8 per cent, the electoral commission announced on Saturday.

“The electoral commission declares Yoweri Museveni… elected President of the Republic of Uganda,” said election commission chairman Justice Simon Mugenyi Byabakama.

Sanwo-Olu extends work from home for civil servants

The Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu has extended the work from home order to civil servants in the State.

Sanwo-Olu gave the order to curtail the spread of COVID-19.

Following the resurgence of COVID-19, the State government had ordered workers from Grade Level 14 and below to work from home.

But, workers across most sectors have been directed to resume on Monday, January 18, 2021.

Lecturer dismissed after confessing to s.e.x.u.a.l.l.y harassing female student

The management of the Kaduna State University, KASU, has terminated the appointment of Dr. Idowu Abbas of the Geography Department, over allegations of s'e'xual harassment.

The Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic) of the school, Prof. Abdullahi Ashafa, disclosed this in a statement in Kaduna on Friday.

Ashafa said Dr Abbas’s appointment was terminated after the university’s Senior Staff Disciplinary Committee, chaired by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Administration), investigated the alleged se'x'ual harassment against the lecturer.

He said the report of the investigating committee was presented at the 217th Management Meeting of the institution on Jan. 12.

The Microsoft’s co-founder and his wife Melinda have been named the top owners of US farmland, having acquired 242,000 acres (almost 1,000 square kilometres) across more than a dozen states.

According to The Land Report, their largest holdings are in Louisiana, where the couple has 69,071 acres and Arkansas 47,927 acres.

The couple also holds 20,588 acres in Nebraska, 25,750 acres in Arizona.

Officially called Murtala Mohammed International Airport, the terminal is being delivered complete with artworks depicting the culture and landmarks of the city.

The Federal Airport Aviation Authority on Friday shared breathtaking photographs of the facade and inside of the new airport constructed by the Chinese.

A commissioning date has not been announced.

Staff collapses as passengers fight over cancelled flight

There was chaos on Friday night at the Malam Aminu Kano International Airport, Kano, after Azman airline cancelled a trip to Lagos.

The chaos started when passengers of an Azman flight from Kano to Lagos were informed that the flight, which was earlier rescheduled from 7:30am to 8:30pm, had been cancelled.

Passengers who were frustrated protested against the development.

The situation turned violent, resulting in a female staff of the airline collapsing after being hit.

Plateau University ASUU begins indefinite strike

The Plateau State University chapter, of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), has commenced an indefinite strike action over insecurity, poor infrastructural development and arrears of earned allowances for its members.

Dr. Pamson Bentse, chairman of the union in the University, who disclosed this to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), on Friday, in Jos, said the decision to proceed on strike was reached after its congress meeting, held on Monday at the University’s main campus, in Bokkos.

Bentse said the action of the union bordered on poor infrastructural development in the University, adding that 90 per cent of the ongoing structures in the school were constructed by the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFUND).

He said other reasons behind the strike include insecurity of students, arrears of earned allowance for members, explaining that the union had been pressing for these demands for the past three years, but nothing had been done to address them, hence the justification for the industrial action.

When it was reported that budding actress, Peju Johnson, had bought a Toyota Venza car, some found it incredulous because she had not been in the movie industry for that long.

Policeman beat me up, seized my phone after I asked to sit beside him in a bus —Deacon

59-year-old man, Komolafe David, has alleged that a policeman brutally assaulted him and seized his phone after he asked to sit beside the officer in a bus.

David, who identified himself as a Deacon of The Apostolic Church of Nigeria, narrated his ordeal before the Lagos State Judicial Panel set up to probe police brutality and other related matters, on Friday.

He said, “The last three days in the year 2010, my church, The Apostolic Church of Nigeria, organised a three-day early morning prayer. I already attended the first day, and the 30th was the second day. I was coming to attend the prayer meeting. I joined a coaster bus at Mile 2. Upon entry, the bus was full; the only available space was where this policeman was sitting, and I politely asked him to move.

Lady burns mother, her children, grandchildren in Lagos

A single mother, Imole Sesan, has allegedly set a family of seven on fire in the Idimu area of Lagos State. 

It was gathered that the victims, Remi Joseph, her children and grandchildren were sleeping in a shop when Sesan locked the family in, doused them with petrol through the window and set them ablaze. 

Imole had visited Joseph, her aunt on January 1 and 3, demanding her late father’s share from the rent of the family property located at Mafoluku in Oshodi, Lagos and was told that the tenants had not paid their rents.

The crime was reportedly committed on January 5 while the suspect was arrested on January 8.

SARS officers collected N100,000 to release my brother, but gave us his corpse - Petitioner

A middle-aged man, Chinasa Ukenna, has demanded for the sum of N30 million as compensation for the death of his elder brother, Cosmos, allegedly in the custody of disbanded Special Anti Robbery Squad in Rivers.

He made the demand while testifying at the Rivers State Judicial Commission of Inquiry sitting in Port Harcourt yesterday.

Ukenna said: “On November 10, 2016, I was in Lagos when my younger brother called me that my elder brother was arrested by the Policemen from Okporo Police Station. My younger brother went to bail him so that he can go to the hospital for treatment but they denied him bail.

“Two days later, they transferred him to SARS. We were not allowed to give him food or see him until one day, they called us to bring N100,000 for his bail. My younger brother ran to my father to get the money and after signing the bail papers, they brought out my brother from the cell dead and his hands were tied with sponge.

Police arrest women for allegedly pouring hot water on maid

Police in Anambra State have arrested two women, Nneka Ayaene, 34, and Chinenye Okoh, 22, of Ndiowu town in Orumba North LGA of Anambra State for allegedly pouring hot water on their house help.

Daily Post learnt that the victim, a 10-year-old girl, Chidimma Nworie Ani, had her body scalded by the hot water poured on her by her madam.

Police Spokesperson in Anambra, CSP Haruna Mohammed who disclosed this to journalists said the victim was rushed to hospital by police operatives and was responding to treatment.

“Police operatives attached to Oko Police Station have arrested one Nneka Ayaene ‘f’ aged 34 years and Chinenye Okoh ‘f’ aged 22 years of Ndiowu town in Orumba North LGA of Anambra State.

Trump reportedly ‘refuses to pay lawyer’s fees’ after failed bid to overturn Biden’s victory

US President Donald Trump has reportedly refused to pay the legal fees of Rudy Giuliani, his personal lawyer.

Guiliani was a key figure in Trump’s bid to overturn the election victory of President-elect Joe Biden through the courts.

The lawyer instituted a number of cases across the US but lost them.

According to the Washington Post, Giuliani charged the president $20,000 a day.

Police burst ‘drug cartel’ in Ogun, recover cash, hard drugs

Operatives of the Ogun State Command of the Nigeria Police have recovered a sum of N2,722,750 and hard drugs worth several millions of Naira after raiding a suspected drug cartel in Lafenwa area of Abeokuta, the state capital.

State Commissioner of Police, Edward Ajogun, disclosed this while displaying the exhibits at the police headquarters, Eleweran, Abeokuta.

Ajogun said the police acted on a tip-off and raided the hideout of the syndicate at the Mayas’ area of Lafenwa, in the Abeokuta North Local Government Area of the State.

He disclosed that none of the suspects was arrested as they fled the scene, saying operatives were constrained from engaging the fleeing cartel members to avoid casualties of innocent people, stressing that efforts were being made to track and arrest the fleeing dealers.

Mustapha denies FG planning another Covid-19 lockdown

The Federal Government on Thursday urged Nigerians to regard the news circulating online that it was contemplating another lockdown.

Mr Boss Mustapha, Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), also Chairman, Presidential Task Force (PTF) on COVID-19, made the clarification.

The statement was signed by Mr Willie Bassey, Director Information in his office.

Mustapha also advised Nigerians to join hands with the Federal Government to contain the spread of the virus by adhering to Non-Pharmaceutical Interventions (NPI’s) as recommended by PTF.

Covid-19 vaccine kills 13 in Norway, 29 have allergic reactions

Norwegian Public Health Institute has updated its Covid-19 vaccination guidelines following the death of 13 people who received the Pfizer-BionTech vaccine jab.

There were also 29 vaccine recipients who had developed significant side effects, including nine serious cases and seven mild ones.

All Covid-19 vaccines can sometimes cause adverse reactions like fever and nausea.

The Norwegian guidelines have now instructed medics to thoroughly evaluate nursing home residents before giving them the vaccine.

Nigerians react as Pigeons released by Buhari refuse to fly at Armed Forces remembrance [video]

The white pigeons, released by President Muhammadu Buhari at the Armed Forces Remembrance Day ceremony, refused to fly despite multiple attempts by the President thereby sparking a debate on social media on Friday.

The President had opened the birdcage at the National Arcade, picked up one of the doves, and thrown it into the air but the bird landed atop the cage and refused to fly.

Buhari, who was eager to let the white pigeons fly, opened the roof of the cage in a bid to send them all out but the birds remained adamant and decided to sit on top of the cage’s roof.

The President, who appeared tired of trying, soon left the birds and returned to his seat. Moments after the President had left, however, some of the birds flew.

Fake Covid-19 vaccines in circulation, NAFDAC warns

The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control, NAFDAC, on Friday alerted of circulation of fake vaccines in Nigeria even as it disclosed that It has not approved any vaccines or receive any application from Covid Vaccine manufacturers yet. 

The Agency also cautioned against the use of any vaccines without the agency’s approval. 

Disclosing these during a virtual press conference, the Director-General of the Agency, Prof Mojisola Christianah Adeyeye, said “Covid-19 vaccines are new, and the side effects or adverse events must be well monitored, therefore, if NAFDAC does not approve, the public should not use.”

“There are reports of fake vaccines in Nigeria. NAFDAC is pleading with the public to beware. No Covid Vaccines have been approved by NAFDAC. Fake vaccines can cause Covid-like illnesses or other serious diseases that could kill. 

72-year-old man arrested for defiling a 2-year-old toddler

A 72-year-old man was on Thursday arrested by police officers for allegedly defiling a two-year-old toddler in Marani, Kisii County, Kenya.

Henry Ondieki was seized moments after he allegedly committed the act while attempting to flee from the scene of crime with an angry mob hot on his heels.

A police report seen by Mediamax Digital revealed that the grandmother of the minor had left her minor playing with other children when she headed to the market.

“When she returned she found the child lying on the ground crying and bleeding which led to the arrest of the suspect who was trying to flee from the scene,” the report read in part.

Covid-19: NYSC shifts camp date, bans religious gatherings

The National Youth Service Corps has banned all forms of religious gatherings on its orientation camps.

NYSC Camp Safe Reopening Project Lead, Dr Oyeladun Okunromade, stated this on Friday at a sensitisation webinar for the 2020 Batch B Stream II Corp Members.

The event with the theme, ‘Protecting The health Of The Nigerian Youth: Safe Reopening Of NYSC Orientation Camps’ also had in attendance the Director-General of NYSC, Brigadier General Shuaibu Ibrahim, as well as the Director-General of the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control, Dr Chikwe Ihekweazu.

9 adults, 5 children die in Kogi multiple motor accident

Fourteen people, including five children have lost their lives in a ghastly motor accident, which occurred on Anyingba -Ajaokuta road in Kogi State.

The State Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps ( FRSC), Mr Solomon Aghure, confirmed this to newsmen in Lokoja on Friday.

He said three vehicles: two trucks and a passenger bus were involved in the accident, which occurred in the evening of Jan. 14.

Aghure said the trucks belonged to a cement manufacturing company while the bus carried the inscription, Bright Mass Transit.

Oyo leads Nigeria’s record single day Covid-19 deaths

Oyo state on Thursday led the rest of Nigeria in the record single day deaths caused by COVID-19 complications.

Out of the 23 deaths announced by the NCDC for the country, 10 occurred in Oyo. The fatalities shot the state’s death toll to 64, from 54 on Wednesday.

Since February last year, the state has recorded 4,570 cases, making it the fifth on the grim leaderboard in the country. The state, as at Thursday, has 540 active cases, with 3,966 discharged.

Lagos recorded six deaths, two more than it logged on Wednesday. The state’s death toll has now hit 266.

Other states which recorded deaths on Thursday were Rivers, Edo, Ogun, Plateau and Sokoto.

He said the incident happened during the video shoot for his hit single, ‘Dis Love’ which also has Wizkid in it.

DJ Spinal, the CEO of The Cap Music, said this during an interview with American media personality, Ebro Darden.

“We had the record and we shot the video in London. She [Tiwa Savage] actually fainted at the video shoot because she was exhausted from a long trip and I forced her to come for the video shoot right away. So she collapsed on me and I was scared,” he revealed.

Nkechi Blessing took to her Instagram page to make fond remarks about Ramsey Nouah after meeting him in the US.

She said that the 50-year-old lover boy actor has refused to grow as he still looks young and fresh as the day goes by.

Davido welcomed Hailey in 2018 with his Atlanta-based baby mama, Amanda.

He shared a video of her flaunting an expensive Rolex watch, and revealed that she makes him laugh. He wrote:

North Korea has unveiled a new type of submarine-launched ballistic missile, described by state media as "the world's most powerful weapon".

Several of the missiles were displayed at a parade overseen by leader Kim Jong-un, reported state media.

The show of military strength comes days before the inauguration of Joe Biden as US president.

It also follows a rare political meeting where Mr Kim decried the US as his country's "biggest enemy".
