Again armed bandits launch another attack in Niger

Armed bandits on Saturday evening launched another attack on Gurmana Ward in Shiroro local government area of Niger state.

The Nation learnt that over 15 people are suspected to have drowned in River Kaduna as they tried to escape from the bandits attack.

Sources said that the bandits were armed with sophisticated weapons and were shooting sporadically when they entered into thee community.

According to a Source who prefers to remain anonymous, the people had to run towards the river to escape attack adding that in the process, many of them drowned.

MFM’s Olukoya wins defamation suit against blogger

The General Overseer of Mountain of Fire and Miracles Ministries (Worldwide), Dr Daniel Olukoya, has won defamation suit against a United Kingdom-based blogger, Maureen Badejo, for libelous publications.

Justice Abiodun Akinyemi of an Ogun State High Court in Abeokuta has slammed N500 million damages against Badejo, for libellous publications against Pastor Olukoya, and the church.

The Court also granted “a perpetual injunction restraining the defendant by herself, her agents, servants, privies or other persons howsoever called or described from further making, publishing and/or disseminating defamatory stories and statements about the claimants or any one of them.”

The Judge described the report as the worst case of reckless defamation and evil use of the internet and social media.

Man calls out Lagos council officials for allegedly making him pay into a PRIVATE CITIZEN'S account

A twitter user -- @eguaba has called out Lagos council officials accusing them of making him pay them money ''illegally'' under duress.

The man in question also said he didn't park illegally but was charged and then made him pay using a POS. He said he later stood his ground that a receipt must be issued to him.

The receipt issued to him has the Local Government bank account numbers which is totally different from where he paid to.

This happened at Isolo yesterday, and now the man is asking the state government to look into the matter and help him.

Jaw dropping! Man testifies on how three policemen allegedly killed eight businessmen because of huge cash they carried

A petitioner before the Osun Judicial Panel of Inquiry on Police Brutality, Human Rights Violations and Related Extra Judicial Killings, Mr Sulaiman Badmus on Saturday narrated how three policemen gruesomely murdered eight travellers because of money.

He added that the incident occurred at Obeira police check point, Okene area of Kogi State, adding that the three armed policemen killed eight out of 10 occupants in the vehicle, while Badmus and one Muideen Mustapha, a co-petitioner escaped.

His word, “On that fateful day, I chartered a bus from Osogbo to Benue, but the driver took another eight passengers along the way who were going to Katsina State to buy rams because it was during Salah festival.

“But when we got to Obeira, Okene axis of Kogi State, we met three fully-armed policemen on our way. The driver stopped and they accosted us, but when the officers saw huge amount of money in our possession to purchase rams, they started misbehaving and asked us to follow them.

Kwara shuts 10 schools over Hijab controversy

The Kwara State Government on Friday ordered the immediate closure of some grant-aided schools in Ilorin pending the resolution of the controversy surrounding the use of Hijab in the affected schools.

The schools, according to the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Education and Human Capital Development, Mrs Kemi Adeosun, include Cherubim and Seraphim (C&S) College, Sabo Oke; St. Anthony College, Offa Road; ECWA School, Oja Iya; Surulere Baptist Secondary School and Bishop Smith Secondary School, Agba Dam.

Also affected are CAC Secondary School, Asa Dam; St. Barnabas Secondary School, Sabo Oke; St. John’s School, Maraba; St. Williams Secondary School, Taiwo Isale and St. James Secondary School, Maraba.

The Permanent Secretary said a government committee comprising representatives of the Muslim and Christian communities would meet to iron out the differences between the two religious communities.

Veteran musician, Pa Chris Ajilo is dead

Highlife music legend and veteran producer, Pa Chris Ajilo is dead.

The musician died at Wesley Guild Hospital in Ilesha on Saturday morning after he was rushed there.

Confirming his death are Orlando Julius and Latoya Aduke who are friends to the veteran musician. They said they visited Pa Ajilo on Thursday and he was hale and hearty.

“It is a painful loss to us. I took Orlando to see him on Thursday at his house, Pa was so happy,” Aduke said.

Police arrests 2 women who allegedly pound children to make ‘charms’ for politicians, rescues children [photos]

Police in Anambra State have arrested two women in Onitsha, who allegedly specialize in abducting children and pounding them in mortars to make charms for politicians. 

The suspects are one Miss Rejoice Raymond, 39 and Mrs Chidi Nwafor, 80.

A viral video circulating in the state showed a huge outcry by members of the public, when men of the Anambra State police command raided the residence of the women.

The video also showed policemen, rescuing three children who were locked up in different rooms in the flat, apparently keeping them for rituals.

Gunmen attack Adamawa United FC, Kidnap team driver

Players and officials of Adamawa United FC have been attacked and their driver kidnapped.

Sources in Adamawa State said on Saturday morning that the players were attacked at gunpoint on the Benin-Ore expressway.

Their phones, money and other valuables were taken away by the attackers who seized the team’s driver.

The sources said the incident occurred about 5.30 am as the players were travelling for their Week 11 NPFL fixture against the MFM FC in Lagos.

Benin Republic ready to be Nigeria’s ‘37th state' – Minister

The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Geoffrey Onyeama, said the President of Benin Republic, Patrice Talon, had expressed readiness for his country to be part of Nigeria.

Onyeama, who stated this shortly after a close door meeting with Beninoise Minister of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation, Aurélien Agbenonci, said the Beninoise president gave the offer when he visited President Muhammadu Buhari, a few weeks back.

“The President of Benin said as far as they are concerned, they want (not just saying it like that) but in reality, Benin should be the 37th state of Nigeria,” he said.

“We should really be one. They charged us to come together at ministerial level, to work out a framework for a sustainable relationship.”

Arrested bandits may be released to secure return of abducted Kagara students

There are indications that the government might consider releasing some arrested bandits as a part of the bargains to secure the release of 27 pupils and 15 workers of Government Science College, Kagara, in the Rafi Local Government Area of Niger State, kidnapped on Wednesday.

It was learnt on Friday that the group of bandits responsible for the abduction wanted their gang members in custody of security agencies released as a swap deal to free the abductees.

Bandits in military uniform had reportedly stormed the school around 2am on Wednesday, and seized their victims, killing a Senior Secondary School 3 pupil who raised the alarm in the process.

Three members of a kidnap gang that picked on their targets through dating sites have been arrested by men of the Inspector-General of Police Intelligence Response Team in Rivers State.

The suspects – Michael Eneji aka General, 30; Nwachukwu Emeka, 22; and Success Okeke, 27 – were rounded up following the killing of one of their victims, Michael Victor, who reportedly went missing on January 6.

City Round learnt that the IRT operatives led by DCP Abba Kyari began to track the gang after Victor’s family lodged a complaint at the police unit on January 12, leading to the arrest of the suspects.

The gang’s modus operandi was to parade themselves as ladies in search of lovers on the dating site and lure their victims to a lonely spot where they would rob them of their valuables.

Man stabs ex-lover in court, jumps down 2-storey building

A man in the Adamawa State capital, Yola, has carried out a dramatic act of stabbing his ex-lover in a courtroom over money and then attempted to escape from the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) officials by jumping down from their two-story building.

The man, Enoch Adamu, had inflicted knife cuts on his lover, Ashini Hosea, in the premises of the Criminal Area Court II, Yola, and left her in pain.

While Ashini Hosea was rushed to the Federal Medical Center (FMC) in Yola for medical attention, Enoch was apprehended and taken to the CID.

In his apparent bid to escape the CID investigators, Enoch was said to have jumped from the staircase of the building of the CID. With the impact of landing on the ground, he became unconscious.

Man collapses in Ogun police cell, petitions IGP

A man, Afolabi Fashogbon, collapsed at Onipanu Police Station, Ogun State causing panic among his family members.

The Punch gathered that the incident happened around 08.30 pm on Thursday.

Fashogbon said he had gone to inspect his family’s land located at Bamigbose Fashogbon Village, Ota, Ogun State, which he claimed a High Court had awarded in the family’s favour when he was arrested by police.

A copy of the judgement and a petition addressed to the Inspector General of Police and the Commissioner of Police in Ogun State were made available to Punch correspondent.

Nigeria records 623 new Covid-19 cases, total now 150,908

The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) has recorded 622 new cases of COVID-19, bringing the total number of infections in the country to 150,908.

The NCDC disclosed this on its official Twitter handle on Friday.

Nigeria also recorded 10 COVID-19 deaths, raising the total fatality in the country to 1,813.

“On the 19th of February 2021, 662 new confirmed cases and 10 deaths were recorded in Nigeria.

Pastor Adeboye calls for the release of Leah Sharibu

The General Overseer of the Redeemed Christian Church of God, Pastor Enoch Adeboye, has called for the release of Leah Sharibu, the Christian girl who has been in the captivity of Boko Haram terrorists.

In a statement titled, ‘A Call for Release of Leah Sharibu,’ which Adeboye signed and issued on Friday, he directed all pastors in the RCCG all over the world to intensify their prayers for Sharibu’s release.

The clergyman also urged parents to use their influence to ensure Sharibu and other children in captivity were released.

FBI links Hushpuppi to North Korean bank robbers hackers

Nigerian Ramon Olorunwa Abbas-  Hushpuppi, now incarcerated in California as he awaits trial for cyber fraud was linked today by the FBI to North Korean hackers, said to be the biggest bank robbers in the world.

The Justice Department in a detailed statement released Friday, said Abbas took part in a “North Korean-perpetrated cyber-enabled heist from a Maltese bank in February 2019.”

His role was as a collaborator with a North Korean money launderer, Ghaleb Alaumary, based in Mississauga, Ontario, Canada.

Alarming! 55 Covid-19 variants circulating in Nigeria – NCDC

There are about 55 variants of SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes coronavirus disease circulating in Nigeria, according to the government.

Director-General of the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC), Dr Chikwe Ihekweazu, made the disclosure in a statement this evening.

He said: “As of February 14 2021, there are about 55 different lineages of SARS-CoV-2 known to be circulating in Nigeria and they are changing rapidly.

“The diversity of SARS-CoV-2 strains indicate multiple introductions of the virus into Nigeria from different parts of the world and adds to evidence of community transmission in different states of Nigeria.”

Two arrested for ''stealing'' truckload of mattresses meant for flood victims in Bayelsa

The police in Bayelsa State have arrested two suspects with a truckload of mattresses allegedly meant for flood victims.

The mattresses, it was learned, were warehoused in an undisclosed location in Yenagoa the state capital when the suspect’s break-in and stole the mattresses.

Civil Liberties Organisation (CLO) in the state had raised alarm over the stolen mattresses which prompted the police to react.

Confirming the incident, Spokesman of the command, Mr Asinim Bustwat said in a statement “Following a tip-off, Operatives of Bayelsa State Police Command have arrested one Shehu Yola ‘m’ 42 years and one Sunday Emmanuel ‘m’ 28 years, at Okaka, Yenagoa.

Obinwanne Okeke to undergo treatment for ‘fraud mentality, drug abuse’ while in prison

Nigerian entrepreneur, Obinwanne Okeke, who was on Tuesday sentenced by a U.S. court to 10 years in prison for multi-million-dollar wire fraud, has been ordered to undergo treatment for “fraud mentality” and drug abuse.

A judge of an Eastern District court of Virginia, Rebecca Smith, ordered Mr Okeke to be incarcerated in a medical facility where he would be subjected to ”full medical and mental health evaluation and treatment”.

The evaluation cum treatment is part of the rehabilitation process to reform his conduct before he completes his jail term and is reintegrated into the society.

Mystery as witch doctor contracted to exhume body of woman allegedly killed, dies in her grave

A witch doctor, contracted to exhume the body of a woman said to have suffered injustice in the hands of her in-laws, collapsed and died inside the grave.

The witch doctor, named Idike Ezikanyi from Uwani-Amaogbo, Amabokwu village in Aku town, Igbo-Etiti Local Government Area of Enugu State, was allegedly recruited by the late woman’s husband, one Nnadi, and other members of his family.

Ezikanyi was to secretly dig up the body of Nnadi’s wife, Stella, who died five years ago and was buried in her husband’s compound.

An eyewitness told Vanguard that on the fateful night, the Nnadi family got more than they bargained for when the witch doctor suddenly shouted from the grave, begging the ghost of the dead woman to have mercy on him.

NDLEA seizes 1,292kg of illicit drug in Ondo forest, arrests 9

Operatives of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, NDLEA, Ondo State Command, have arrested nine dealers of illicit drugs and seized from then 1,292 kilograms of cannabis sativa and its seeds.

Announcing the huge seizure in a statement on Friday, the state Commander of the anti-drug agency, Mr. Haruna Gagara disclosed that out of the figure, 711.5kg of cannabis seeds was recovered from a forest in Ago Oyibo area of Ogbese, Akure North Local Government Area of the state.

According to him, “this seizure has thwarted the mass cultivation of an estimated 250 hectares of cannabis sativa farmland in Ondo State. 

“This humongous cultivation, if allowed, would produce an estimated 443,000 kilograms of cannabis.” He said his men stormed the forest on Thursday, February 18, 2021 following intelligence.

Lagos judicial panel issues compensation to victims of Police brutality

The Lagos State judicial panel hearing cases of police brutality on Friday, awarded compensation to some victims of police brutality the panel has heard their cases and found meritorious.

Some petitioners who received compensation of N10 million are Adebayo Abayomi for the extra judicial kiling of his mother, and Hannah Olugbodi for being shot by a police officer among others.

Justice Doris Okuwobi (retrd) in her recommendation also noted that erring officers who have committed these abuses are sanctioned.

My leg may be amputated if not granted bail, Maina tells court

A former Chairman of the defunct Pension Reformed Task Team, Abdulrasheed Maina, on Friday told the Federal High Court, Abuja, that his leg might be amputated if not granted bail to have adequate Medicare. 

Maina, through his counsel, Sani Katu, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria, told Justice Okon Abang at the resumed trial.

Katu said his client was taken to the University of Abuja Teaching Hospital, Gwagwalada, because of his worsening health condition and the medical report was exhibited in the bail application.

The lawyer, who said that Kuje Correctional Centre where Maina was kept did not have the facility to attend to his state of health, added that if not granted bail, his leg might be amputated.
