Abducted students: Parents thank Governor Bello over release

Parents of the 27 abducted students of Government Science College, Kagara, have commended Niger state government for securing their release, along with 15 others.

Gunmen on 17 February abducted the students, three staff and 12 family members.

They were released today after spending 10 days with their captors.

The students arrived Minna amidst tight security at about 9.45 a.m.

They were received by the state government officials at the Niger state Development Company Suites.

Indian rooster kills owner with cockfight blade

A rooster fitted with a knife for an illegal cockfight in southern India has killed its owner, sparking a manhunt for the organisers of the event, police said on Saturday.

The bird had a knife attached to its leg ready to take on an opponent when it inflicted serious injuries to the man’s groin as it tried to escape, officers said.

The victim died from loss of blood before he could reach a hospital in the Karimnagar district of Telangana state earlier this week, local police officer B. Jeevan told AFP.

The man was among 16 people organising the cockfight in the village of Lothunur when the freak accident took place, Jeevan said.

#FreeDawisu: SERAP, others demand release of Ganduje’s ex- aide, Salihu Tanko Yakasai

Civil society organisation, the Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project, have joined other Nigerians to demand the immediate release of Salihu Tanko Yakasai, who was allegedly arrested by the Department of State Services.

“We condemn the unlawful arrest of journalist Salihu Tanko Yakasai simply for peacefully exercising his right to freedom of expression.

“Nigerian authorities should stop shutting up critics. Authorities must immediately and unconditionally release Mr Yakasai,” SERAP tweeted.

The group also criticized the Kano State government for sacking the journalist, saying the state authorities “are making a mockery of the Nigerian Constitution”.

Zamfara abduction: Kano shuts Institutions in border areas

The Kano State Government has ordered the immediate shutting down of tertiary institutions in border areas of the state.

This was as a result of the abductions of about 317 female boarding students of Government Girls Secondary School in Jangebe, Talata Mafara Local Government Area of Zamfara State Friday morning by bandits.

The State’s Commissioner of Higher Education, Dr Mariya Mahmoud Bunkure said the students of the affected four institutions are expected to vacate campuses as soon as possible.

Dr Bunkure said a new date for the reopening of the institutions will be communicated later.

Fashola announces reopening of Third Mainland Bridge

The Federal Government has announced the reopening of the Third Mainland Bridge in Lagos State.

Babatunde Fashola, Minister of Works and Housing announced the reopening today.

In a tweet, Fashola said the bridge reopened from midday of Saturday.

He wrote: “Third mainland bridge rehab completed. Fully opens to traffic at 12noon today. Thank you all for your patience. Drive safely.”

Continuous intervention of Students' Union makes Dangote pay N500k to each family of students killed in crash

Dangote has paid N500,000 to each family of the eight students killed on Jan. 23 when one of its trucks lost control at the Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba-Akoko, Ondo State.

The Students’ Union Government of the university made the disclosure in a statement issued on Saturday.

Mr Oluwasegun Obagunwa, its president said in the statement that the payment was made “following several agitations led by the Students’ Union Government’’.

“The Students’ Union Government wishes to announce to the students and the entire populace that the Dangote group of companies has reached out to all the families of the victims to pay them condolence visits.

Ganduje sacks aide, Salihu Yakasai for criticising Buhari

Salihu Tanko-Yakasai, a media aide of Governor Abdullahi Ganduje has been relieved of his appointment for asking for President Buhari’s resignation over his failure to tackle widespread abductions in the country.

According to a statement issued by the state government, Tanko-Yakasai who has since been arrested was sacked over his continued unguarded comments and utterances which are deemed contrary to the stand of the (APC) government which he is serving.

The state commissioner for Information, Malam Muhammad Garba, who conveyed the governor’s directive in a statement Saturday, said the sack is with immediate effect.

He said the aide had failed to differentiate between personal opinion and official stand on matters of public.

DSS ''arrests'' Ganduje’s aide hours after criticising Buhari

The Department of State Services has arrested Salihu Tanko Yakasai, a media aide to Governor Abdullahi Ganduje of Kano State, barely hours after he criticised President, Muhammadu Buhari.

Yakasai had in a series of tweets on Friday in reaction to the abduction of about 317 female students of Government Girls Secondary School in Jangebe, Zamfara State, said the kidnappings had become too frequent.

The governor’s aide had also said if it was under another President’s watch that the abductions had happened, there would have been more outrage in the North.

He tweeted, “Clearly, we as APC government, at all levels, have failed Nigerians in the number one duty we were elected to do which is to secure lives and properties. Not a single day goes by without some sort of insecurity in this land. This is a shame! Deal with terrorists decisively or resign.

Lady Gaga’s dogs found, handed over by mystery woman

The two missing French bulldogs of Lady Gaga have been found, two days after they were stolen by gunmen, who shot her dog walker in Los Angeles.

Reports said an unnamed woman on Friday brought the dogs, named Koji and Gustav, to a Los Angeles Police Department Station.

The return came moments after Lady Gaga promised a $500,000 rewards for finders.

Thirty four year-old Lady Gaga, real name, Stefani Joanne Angelina Germanotta, had called the dogs ‘beloved’ members of her family in a tweet on Friday.

Woman undergo liver transplant after nose piercing leads to life-threatening condition

A New York woman is recovering after a nose piercing infection led to a life-threatening condition, causing her to need a liver transplant.

Queens resident Dana Smith, 37, got a nose piercing shortly after Thanksgiving, CBS New York reported Thursday.

About a month later, Smith started to have stomach pains but was hesitant to go to the hospital because of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.

Speaking to CBS New York, Smith described her symptoms as "stomach pain. I felt like I kind of lost appetite."

ISIS bride, Shamima Begum cannot return to the UK, Supreme Court rules

Shamima Begum, who left the UK for Syria to join the Islamic State group as a teenager, will not be allowed to return and fight her citizenship case, the Supreme Court has ruled.

The court said in a unanimous ruling that her rights were not breached when she was refused permission to return.

Ms Begum, 21, wants to come back to challenge the home secretary's decision to remove her British nationality.

Breaking: Abducted Kagara students regain freedom

The kidnapped students and staff of Government Science College Kagara have finally regained freedom from the armed bandits in Niger State.

A top security source involved in the counter-kidnapping operation in the State told The Punch.

The boarding students were abducted by the bandits who were dressed in military uniforms on February 17, 2021.

A total of 27 students, three staff members, and 12 members of their family were abducted after the attack on the Kagara school in the early hours of Wednesday.

Tramadol concealed in ceramic tiles intercepted in Lagos

The Apapa Command of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), has intercepted 554 cartons of tramadol and 989 cartons of unwholesome pharmaceutical products concealed in ceramic tiles at Lagos port.

The Duty Paid Value (DPV) of the drugs, according to the Controller of the Command, Mr. Malanta Yusuf was N223.2 million.

He said the drugs were traced from Indian to Port of Lome in Togo before it was finally shipped to Apapa port where it was intercepted.

He said: ‘’Upon 100 percent physical examination to ascertain its true contents, he said it was found to contain 554 cartons of tramadol capsules (120 milligrams) concealed with 1000 cartons of ceramic tiles.

Armed robbers attack Oyo APC chairman’s residence, seize party’s vehicle

Some armed robbers have attacked the residence of the acting Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Chief Akin Oke.

Daily Post gathered that the residence of the acting Chairman located at Oluyole area was attacked on Friday.

The armed robber stole a vehicle belonging to the political party.

Ogun Deputy Speaker, Kadiri arrested for ‘attacking’ constituents

The police in Ogun State have arrested the Deputy Speaker of the Ogun State House of Assembly, Hon. Oludare Kadiri.

Kadiri was said to have been arrested on Friday over an alleged attack on some politicians in his constituency, Oru-Ijebu, Ijebu North Local Government Area of Ogun State.

The Ogun Police Public Relations Officer, Abimbola Oyeyemi, confirmed Kadiri’s arrest to Daily Post.

Oyeyemi disclosed that Kadiri was arrested following a petition against him.

Seven abducted Zamfara schoolgirls escape

Seven out of the 317 school girls abducted by bandits at Government Girls Science Secondary School, Jangebe have escaped.

A source Jangebe town confirmed to The Nation on Friday evening the girls returned home from their captors.

He said they claimed they maneuvered their way back from the bandits while trekking along the forest.

NUJ calls for Sheikh Gumi’s arrest

The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), on Friday, called for the arrest of Sheikh Ahmad Gumi, for saying journalists are criminals for calling bandits criminals.

The union expressed reservation on Gumi’s remarks during an interview on Arise TV on Wednesday where he labelled journalists as criminals for calling bandits criminals.

In his interview, Gumi said: “You are emphasising on criminality, I don’t know. Even the Press (journalists) are criminals too because they are putting oil into fire [sic]. These people are listening to you, don’t address them as criminals”.

Osinbajo disagrees with CBN’s cryptocurrency ban

Professor Yemi Osinbajo, the Vice President of Nigeria, has disagreed with the Central Bank of Nigeria’s decision to ban cryptocurrencies.

Osinbajo on Friday, Feb 26, 2021, called for a regulation of the industry instead of an outright ban.

Osinbajo said instead of an outright ban, the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) and Central Bank of Nigeria should create a regulatory road map.

He fully appreciated the stance of the CBN, Nigerian Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), and law enforcement agencies on the possible abuses of crypto assets.

DSS breaks silence on attempt to arrest Sunday Igboho

The Department of State Services, DSS, has broken the silence on purported attempt to arrest Yoruba activist, Sunday Ighoho on Lagos-Ibadan Expressway.

The DSS, in a statement said it never attempted to arrest Igboho at any time, saying the report was fake.

A statement issued by Peter Afunanya, Public Relations Officer, Department of State Services refuted the claim and called on the public to disregard the report and take it as misinformation.

“The Department of State Services wishes to refute the news that it attempted to arrest one Sunday Igboho, today, at Ibadan, Oyo State.

“The said news is misinforming and should taken as fake and therefore be disregarded,” DSS said.

Landslide carries 100-year-old cemetery into the sea [photos]

Hundreds of coffins and two chapels fell into the sea after a landslide caused a portion of a cliffside cemetery in northwestern Italy to collapse earlier this week.

Workers captured footage of the walls of the traditional Italian cemetery cracking before falling over the cliffs of Camogli, a fishing village near Genoa.

Photos have emerged following the Feb. 22 landslide which show the stripped cliffside as well as coffins floating in the muddy water below. The coffins fell into the Tyrrhenian Sea, which is a part of the Mediterranean Sea.

Serious matter! Union of Teachers, Nigerian students threaten to shut down schools over abductions

The Nigerian Union of Teachers (NUT) and National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) have threatened to shut down schools over the abductions of students by terrorists. 

According to the two groups the recent spate of kidnap means that students are no longer safe. 

In an interview with Vanguard, the national secretary of the NUT, Dr Mike Ene and Southwest coordinator of NANS, Kappo Olawale Samuel, said some people were all out to put a setback to education in Nigeria while reacting to the recent Zamfara abduction. 

“These abductions here and there are deliberate steps to discourage education and encourage school dropouts. It is unfortunate that schools have now become soft targets and we appear helpless.

Foiled arrest: Go after Shekau, Gumi, before chasing me, Sunday Igboho fires back

Yoruba activist, Chief Sunday Adeyemo aka Sunday Igboho, has told the Federal Government to channel its energy towards arresting Boko Haram leader, Ibrahim Shekau and Islamic cleric, Sheikh Ahmad Gumi, who has been holding meetings with bandits.

He was reacting to a face-off between him and security agents around the Guru Maharaji bus stop on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway.

We will rescue kidnapped 300 schoolgirls unhurt - Zamfara Commissioner of Police vows

The Commissioner of Police in Zamfara, Abutu Yaro, has assured that the over 300 schoolgirls abducted from Government Girls Science Secondary School, Jangebe early Friday morning by yet to be identified gunmen will be rescued safely.

“l can assure you that we will rescue all the students unhurt,” the CP said while speaking to journalists in Jangebe, Talata-Mafara Local Government Area of the state.

He, however,  expressed dismay with members of the affected community who resorted to taking laws into their hands by attacking vehicles including those on rescue mission and journalists and appealed for calm.

Policemen flee as hoodlums set station ablaze

There was panic in Imo state on Thursday night as hoodlums set the Aboh Mbaise Divisional Police Headquarters ablaze.

The Nation gathered policemen on duty fled as the hoodlums who were mobile carried out the arson on the facility.

On arrival, the hoodlums who, according to sources were carrying inflammable objects, threw them at the police formation and ignited the environment.

The development caused panic in the area, as the policemen on guard, suspects and residents ran into nearby bushes.

The joint team laid ambush for Igboho, but his youthful supporters resisted the move.

Igboho was said to be on his way to see Afenifere chieftain, Pa Ayo Adebanjo in Lagos when the joint team, numbering about 40 ambushed him and wanted to arrest him on Lagos-Ibadan Expressway.

His supporters reportedly resisted his arrest as commotion ensued between his supporters and the joint team which sought to arrest him by force.

Lady Gaga has offered $500,000 for the return of two of her dogs that were allegedly stolen off a Los Angeles street after her dog walker was shot.

The “Rain on Me” singer, born as Stefani Germanotta, will give the reward for the French bulldogs, Koji and Gustav, with “no questions asked,” NBC News reported.

News of her offer came as Hollywood dog walkers are reportedly seeking to protect themselves and their four-legged charges.

''5G network: Nigeria risks security threat if deployed wrongly''

Ahead of the nation’s moves to install the controversial 5G network, the Office of the National Security Adviser (NSA) has stated that Nigeria would risk a security threat, if the network was deployed wrongly in view of its sophistication.

The Director of Communications, Office of the National Security Adviser, Bala Fakandu, gave the warning while speaking at a one day investigative hearing on 5G network by the Senate Joint Committee on Communications, ICT and Cybercrimes, Science and Technology on Thursday.

According to him, eavesdropping, espionage and cyber attack are the likelihood of what would happen as telecommunication operators have to upgrade their equipment to adapt to the 5G network, adding that protective measures must be taken before deployment is done.

Horror crash: Tiger Woods moved to new hospital

Tiger Woods has been moved to a new hospital in Los Angeles as he recovers from multiple injuries sustained in a serious car accident this week.

The 15-time major winner underwent surgery to stabilize compound fractures of his tibia and fibula, after his horror accident on Tuesday.

The Los Angeles County Sheriff said Woods, 45, would not face criminal charges in the crash.

"Woods was transferred to Cedars-Sinai Medical Center for continuing orthopaedic care and recovery," Harbor-UCLA Medical Center interim CEO Anish Mahajan said on the hospital's Twitter account.

Fresh schoolgirls abduction: Government says security operatives, vigilantes are after abductors

The Zamfara State Government has confirmed the abduction of female students of Government Girls Secondary School, Jangebe in the Talata-Mafara Local Government Area of the state.

The confirmation was made by the Commissioner of Security and Home Affairs, Alhaji Abubakar Dauran in a brief interview with the News Agency of Nigeria in Gusau on Friday.

The abductors in their hundreds invaded the town and took away the students about 2 am.

“I can confirm to you now that we have sadly received the report on the abduction of the students of GGSS Jangebe and right now, I am on my way to the school.

“At this moment, l cannot say how many students were taken away by the gunmen until l get there, but we have already mobilized security men and members of the vigilantè who are now in pursuit of the abductors,” the commissioner stated.

Traffic violation: LASTMA officials to now carry body cameras

The General Manager of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority, Olajide Oduyoye, says officials of the agency will begin to monitor traffic violation with the use of smart body cameras.

He stated this on Friday while speaking on Channels Television’s ‘Sunrise Daily’ programme.

The LASTMA general manager said, “Technology is the way to go. Our Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, is on top of that. He approved the deployment of technology for us to improve our communication last year 2020.

“This year, we are definitely hoping to start in the next few weeks what you will say are non-approachable offence dealings. That means we are going to be having body cameras on officers to capture incidences because things happen so fast and you can’t really say let me get my camera. But if you have your body camera on that is recording, then, you can capture all sorts of different things that you can use against offenders.”

Nigerian appointed provost of University of San Francisco

A Nigerian, Julia Oparah, has been named the provost and vice president of academic affairs at the University of San Francisco (USF) in the United States.

Mrs Oparah is currently the provost and dean of the faculty of Ethnic Studies at Mills College where she had served as a member of the faculty for almost 20 years before being named provost and dean of the faculty in 2017.

This was revealed by the President of USF, Paul J. Fitzgerald, on Thursday.

“Our community has identified a leader in higher education with extraordinary scholarly, administrative, and service credentials to lead USF as provost,” he said.

Rotimi Amaechi returns to school, enrolls as law student

Years after completion of his tertiary education as a graduate of English studies and literature, transportation minister Rotimi Amaechi has enrolled at Baze University, Abuja, as a law student.

Mr. Amaechi received a bachelor of arts degree (honours) from the University of Port Harcourt in 1987.

It is not clear the exact year the former Rivers governor enrolled in the private university popular with children of Abuja elite, but sources told Peoples Gazette that he is in 200 level going to 300. Some of the students who saw him on Thursday said they drew inspiration from his decision to acquire more knowledge even as he could be considered to have done significantly well for himself as a citizen.

The minister, who has been hailed as one of the most active amongst President Muhammadu Buhari‘s cabinet members, was said to have sought permission from the president prior to enrolment, pledging that it would not affect his ministerial duties.

Yakubu Pam, the Executive Secretary of Nigerian Christian Pilgrim Commission (NCPC) at his Headoffice Abuja @pamyaks, where we had an extensive deliberation on NCPC vision, dissecting the values for National development and youth involvement in peace building in line with the NCPC's mandate.
