Ogun Deputy Speaker, Kadiri arrested for ‘attacking’ constituents

The police in Ogun State have arrested the Deputy Speaker of the Ogun State House of Assembly, Hon. Oludare Kadiri.

Kadiri was said to have been arrested on Friday over an alleged attack on some politicians in his constituency, Oru-Ijebu, Ijebu North Local Government Area of Ogun State.

The Ogun Police Public Relations Officer, Abimbola Oyeyemi, confirmed Kadiri’s arrest to Daily Post.

Oyeyemi disclosed that Kadiri was arrested following a petition against him.

Seven abducted Zamfara schoolgirls escape

Seven out of the 317 school girls abducted by bandits at Government Girls Science Secondary School, Jangebe have escaped.

A source Jangebe town confirmed to The Nation on Friday evening the girls returned home from their captors.

He said they claimed they maneuvered their way back from the bandits while trekking along the forest.

Ugandan opposition leader Bobi Wine, has reacted to the fresh abduction of Nigerian school girls. Recall over 300 students in the early hours of friday were abducted from their school hostels in Zamfara.

Bobi while reacting to the abduction says it's becoming too many.

He says in Nigeria terrorists are the ones abducting, while in his country Uganda -- where he almost won the Presidential election - the Government are the ones doing the abduction.

He therefore called on leaders to Bring Back Africans.

NUJ calls for Sheikh Gumi’s arrest

The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), on Friday, called for the arrest of Sheikh Ahmad Gumi, for saying journalists are criminals for calling bandits criminals.

The union expressed reservation on Gumi’s remarks during an interview on Arise TV on Wednesday where he labelled journalists as criminals for calling bandits criminals.

In his interview, Gumi said: “You are emphasising on criminality, I don’t know. Even the Press (journalists) are criminals too because they are putting oil into fire [sic]. These people are listening to you, don’t address them as criminals”.

Osinbajo disagrees with CBN’s cryptocurrency ban

Professor Yemi Osinbajo, the Vice President of Nigeria, has disagreed with the Central Bank of Nigeria’s decision to ban cryptocurrencies.

Osinbajo on Friday, Feb 26, 2021, called for a regulation of the industry instead of an outright ban.

Osinbajo said instead of an outright ban, the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) and Central Bank of Nigeria should create a regulatory road map.

He fully appreciated the stance of the CBN, Nigerian Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), and law enforcement agencies on the possible abuses of crypto assets.

DSS breaks silence on attempt to arrest Sunday Igboho

The Department of State Services, DSS, has broken the silence on purported attempt to arrest Yoruba activist, Sunday Ighoho on Lagos-Ibadan Expressway.

The DSS, in a statement said it never attempted to arrest Igboho at any time, saying the report was fake.

A statement issued by Peter Afunanya, Public Relations Officer, Department of State Services refuted the claim and called on the public to disregard the report and take it as misinformation.

“The Department of State Services wishes to refute the news that it attempted to arrest one Sunday Igboho, today, at Ibadan, Oyo State.

“The said news is misinforming and should taken as fake and therefore be disregarded,” DSS said.

Landslide carries 100-year-old cemetery into the sea [photos]

Hundreds of coffins and two chapels fell into the sea after a landslide caused a portion of a cliffside cemetery in northwestern Italy to collapse earlier this week.

Workers captured footage of the walls of the traditional Italian cemetery cracking before falling over the cliffs of Camogli, a fishing village near Genoa.

Photos have emerged following the Feb. 22 landslide which show the stripped cliffside as well as coffins floating in the muddy water below. The coffins fell into the Tyrrhenian Sea, which is a part of the Mediterranean Sea.

The Nigerian Union of Teachers (NUT) and National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) have threatened to shut down schools over the abductions of students by terrorists. 

According to the two groups the recent spate of kidnap means that students are no longer safe. 

In an interview with Vanguard, the national secretary of the NUT, Dr Mike Ene and Southwest coordinator of NANS, Kappo Olawale Samuel, said some people were all out to put a setback to education in Nigeria while reacting to the recent Zamfara abduction. 

“These abductions here and there are deliberate steps to discourage education and encourage school dropouts. It is unfortunate that schools have now become soft targets and we appear helpless.

Foiled arrest: Go after Shekau, Gumi, before chasing me, Sunday Igboho fires back

Yoruba activist, Chief Sunday Adeyemo aka Sunday Igboho, has told the Federal Government to channel its energy towards arresting Boko Haram leader, Ibrahim Shekau and Islamic cleric, Sheikh Ahmad Gumi, who has been holding meetings with bandits.

He was reacting to a face-off between him and security agents around the Guru Maharaji bus stop on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway.

The Yoruba activist, who has been in the news for serving a quit notice on herdsmen in some parts of the South-West, said he was never invited before they attempted to arrest him.

He told The Punch in an interview: “Go and ask them to invite Gumi and Shekau first before disturbing me. Let them face the bandits instead.”

Prince Harry said this in an interview during “The Late Late Show” while discussing his move away from London and why he left the royal family.

He said to the show host, James Corden that he decided he needed to “get his family out of here” and that he preferred the depiction of royal life seen on Netflix show “The Crown” to the one published in newspapers.

We will rescue kidnapped 300 schoolgirls unhurt - Zamfara Commissioner of Police vows

The Commissioner of Police in Zamfara, Abutu Yaro, has assured that the over 300 schoolgirls abducted from Government Girls Science Secondary School, Jangebe early Friday morning by yet to be identified gunmen will be rescued safely.

“l can assure you that we will rescue all the students unhurt,” the CP said while speaking to journalists in Jangebe, Talata-Mafara Local Government Area of the state.

He, however,  expressed dismay with members of the affected community who resorted to taking laws into their hands by attacking vehicles including those on rescue mission and journalists and appealed for calm.

Policemen flee as hoodlums set station ablaze

There was panic in Imo state on Thursday night as hoodlums set the Aboh Mbaise Divisional Police Headquarters ablaze.

The Nation gathered policemen on duty fled as the hoodlums who were mobile carried out the arson on the facility.

On arrival, the hoodlums who, according to sources were carrying inflammable objects, threw them at the police formation and ignited the environment.

The development caused panic in the area, as the policemen on guard, suspects and residents ran into nearby bushes.

The joint team laid ambush for Igboho, but his youthful supporters resisted the move.

Igboho was said to be on his way to see Afenifere chieftain, Pa Ayo Adebanjo in Lagos when the joint team, numbering about 40 ambushed him and wanted to arrest him on Lagos-Ibadan Expressway.

His supporters reportedly resisted his arrest as commotion ensued between his supporters and the joint team which sought to arrest him by force.

''5G network: Nigeria risks security threat if deployed wrongly''

Ahead of the nation’s moves to install the controversial 5G network, the Office of the National Security Adviser (NSA) has stated that Nigeria would risk a security threat, if the network was deployed wrongly in view of its sophistication.

The Director of Communications, Office of the National Security Adviser, Bala Fakandu, gave the warning while speaking at a one day investigative hearing on 5G network by the Senate Joint Committee on Communications, ICT and Cybercrimes, Science and Technology on Thursday.

According to him, eavesdropping, espionage and cyber attack are the likelihood of what would happen as telecommunication operators have to upgrade their equipment to adapt to the 5G network, adding that protective measures must be taken before deployment is done.

Horror crash: Tiger Woods moved to new hospital

Tiger Woods has been moved to a new hospital in Los Angeles as he recovers from multiple injuries sustained in a serious car accident this week.

The 15-time major winner underwent surgery to stabilize compound fractures of his tibia and fibula, after his horror accident on Tuesday.

The Los Angeles County Sheriff said Woods, 45, would not face criminal charges in the crash.

"Woods was transferred to Cedars-Sinai Medical Center for continuing orthopaedic care and recovery," Harbor-UCLA Medical Center interim CEO Anish Mahajan said on the hospital's Twitter account.

Salihu Tanko-Yakasai, spokesperson of Abdullahi Ganduje, Governor of Kano, says the All Progressives Congress (APC) has failed Nigerians in the area of security.

Tanko-Yakasai was reacting to the abduction of students from Government Girls Secondary School, Jangebe, Talata-Mafara local government area of Zamfara.

The gunmen were said to have invaded the school around 2am today kidnapping over 300 schoolgirls.

The incident comes a week after 27 schoolchildren were abducted from Government Science College, Kagara, Niger state.

Fresh schoolgirls abduction: Government says security operatives, vigilantes are after abductors

The Zamfara State Government has confirmed the abduction of female students of Government Girls Secondary School, Jangebe in the Talata-Mafara Local Government Area of the state.

The confirmation was made by the Commissioner of Security and Home Affairs, Alhaji Abubakar Dauran in a brief interview with the News Agency of Nigeria in Gusau on Friday.

The abductors in their hundreds invaded the town and took away the students about 2 am.

“I can confirm to you now that we have sadly received the report on the abduction of the students of GGSS Jangebe and right now, I am on my way to the school.

“At this moment, l cannot say how many students were taken away by the gunmen until l get there, but we have already mobilized security men and members of the vigilantè who are now in pursuit of the abductors,” the commissioner stated.

Traffic violation: LASTMA officials to now carry body cameras

The General Manager of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority, Olajide Oduyoye, says officials of the agency will begin to monitor traffic violation with the use of smart body cameras.

He stated this on Friday while speaking on Channels Television’s ‘Sunrise Daily’ programme.

The LASTMA general manager said, “Technology is the way to go. Our Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, is on top of that. He approved the deployment of technology for us to improve our communication last year 2020.

“This year, we are definitely hoping to start in the next few weeks what you will say are non-approachable offence dealings. That means we are going to be having body cameras on officers to capture incidences because things happen so fast and you can’t really say let me get my camera. But if you have your body camera on that is recording, then, you can capture all sorts of different things that you can use against offenders.”

Nigerian appointed provost of University of San Francisco

A Nigerian, Julia Oparah, has been named the provost and vice president of academic affairs at the University of San Francisco (USF) in the United States.

Mrs Oparah is currently the provost and dean of the faculty of Ethnic Studies at Mills College where she had served as a member of the faculty for almost 20 years before being named provost and dean of the faculty in 2017.

This was revealed by the President of USF, Paul J. Fitzgerald, on Thursday.

“Our community has identified a leader in higher education with extraordinary scholarly, administrative, and service credentials to lead USF as provost,” he said.

Rotimi Amaechi returns to school, enrolls as law student

Years after completion of his tertiary education as a graduate of English studies and literature, transportation minister Rotimi Amaechi has enrolled at Baze University, Abuja, as a law student.

Mr. Amaechi received a bachelor of arts degree (honours) from the University of Port Harcourt in 1987.

It is not clear the exact year the former Rivers governor enrolled in the private university popular with children of Abuja elite, but sources told Peoples Gazette that he is in 200 level going to 300. Some of the students who saw him on Thursday said they drew inspiration from his decision to acquire more knowledge even as he could be considered to have done significantly well for himself as a citizen.

The minister, who has been hailed as one of the most active amongst President Muhammadu Buhari‘s cabinet members, was said to have sought permission from the president prior to enrolment, pledging that it would not affect his ministerial duties.

Ghana security forces shut down LGBTQ+ centre

🙄🤣 Ghana’s security forces have raided and shut down the office of an organisation that supports the LGBTQI+ community.

“This morning, our centre was invaded by National Security. To this day, we no longer have access to this space, and our safety is threatened,” the LGBT+ Rights Ghana group announced via its Twitter handle.

The rights group has called on human rights organisations to speak up and condemn the attacks against it.

The centre was launched and opened on January 31 in a ceremony that received a European Union delegation and other foreign embassies.

Kwara governor approves hijab use in public schools

Kwara Governor, AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, has approved that schoolchildren in public schools can use hijab.

According to a statement by the Secretary to the Kwara government, Mamma Jibril, the government held a meeting with religious groups to reach an agreement.

Mr. AbdulRazaq, presided over the meeting held on Wednesday and ordered all 10 schools shut should be reopened on Monday.

Last week, 10 schools were shut down by the government over the hijab controversy.

Travelers stranded as Ghanaian airport workers go on strike

Travelers were this morning stranded as Ghanaian airport workers began strike this morning.

Travelers who have to fly via the International airport of the country, the Kotoka International Airport are seen stranded and wandering as workers at the airport began their indefinite strike.

The strike action is in protest against the failure of the state-owned company’s board to publish and implement the findings of an investigative committee set up to probe an allegation of mismanagement against the current Managing Director, Yaw Kwakwa.

Boko Haram abducts travellers on Maiduguri-Damaturu highway Thursday afternoon

Scores of travellers were abducted by suspected Boko Haram terrorists on Thursday along Maiduguri-Damaturu highway.

A source told The Punch in Maiduguri that the insurgents ambushed commercial vehicles plying the highway on Thursday afternoon and abducted many passengers.

One of the travellers, who escaped, said the vehicles were stopped by the insurgents around 1pm, with passengers dragged out and taken away into the bush.

He said the heavily-armed insurgents took position on the highway at Garin-Kuturu near Auno, in the Konduga Local Government Area of Borno State, few kilometres from Maiduguri, the capital.

Husband stabbed to death by his wife's lover after he found them kissing

Tragedy struck in Imo State on Tuesday after a man, Victor Ikegwuonu, 25, was allegedly stabbed to death by his wife’s lover, Emeka Ezuruike.

Punch Metro gathered that the deceased allegedly caught Ezuruike kissing his wife.

The incident happened at Umudike Umuna, in the Orlu Local Government Area of the state.

The deceased hailed from Ndibuche Arondizuogu in the Ideato North LGA of the state, while the suspect is a native of Ubomiri-Emuoba in Rivers State.

Northern pastors want US, UN intervention in Nigeria now

A coalition of Christians in the North under the auspices of the Arewa Christians and Indigenous Pastors Association has said that the United Nations needs to urgently intervene in Nigeria’s situation in order to prevent a “full blown” war in the country.

The Chairman of the association, Rev. Luke Shehu, stated this at a press conference in Jos on Thursday. Shehu decried the injustice going on in the country and the government’s lack of interest to address the problems.

“Following Nigeria’s slide into being a failed state and on the precipice of anarchy, absence of social justice, the rule of law, denial of minority rights and freedom of practice of religion as well as persecution coupled with absence of institutions to check government abuse or to uphold the tenets of democracy, we kindly request that the United States Government through the appropriate process assign a special envoy to Nigeria with immediate effect to forestall a total breakdown of law and order leading to war.

Travel agent jailed for stealing N10m tickets

Justice Oluwatoyin Taiwo of the Lagos State Special Offences Court in Ikeja has sentenced a travel agent, Babawale Ponle, to two years’ imprisonment for misappropriating N10m worth of airline tickets.

Ponle, who is the Managing Director of Travel Doctor Limited, was arraigned by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission on four counts bordering on stealing and issuance of dud cheques.

It was gathered that Ponle was given the tickets on credit by a travel company, Sound Travel Services Limited.

The prosecutor, Samuel Daji, said Ponle committed the offence between March and December 2012.

Delta lovers found dead in residence, suicide suspected

A 33-year-old man, Emmanuel Oshiotu, and his 25-year-old lover, Amaka Okafor, were on Thursday found dead in their one-room apartment in Uvwie community in the Uvwie Local Government Area of Delta State.

The corpses of the lovers were sighted by neighbours in their apartment located at Ojigbo Crescent, Off Sapele-Effurun Road, Uvwie.

A neighbour of the deceased, who declined to be named, said, “Around 5am, we heard Emmanuel shouting for help and on breaking the door, found him vomiting white foam while his lover’s lifeless body lay a few distance from him.”

The cause of their death could not be ascertained by anyone as of the time of filing this report but witnesses said a can of insecticide and a knife were found besides their bodies.

Breaking! Gunmen abduct over 300 schoolgirls in Zamfara

Not again! Not again!!!!!!

Some gunmen suspected to be bandits have abducted over 300 schoolgirls at Government Girls Secondary School, Jangebe in the Talata-Mafara Local Government Area of Zamfara State.

A staff of the school, who begged for anonymity,  said the bandits arrived in the school around 1am on Friday with Hilux vehicles and motorcycles and forcefully evacuated the students.

He narrated that some of the bandits were in uniforms and pretended to be security personnel, then later broke into the students hostels and abducted more than 300 students.

The Zamfara abduction occurred some eight days after gunmen kidnapped dozens of students and workers of Government Science College in Kagara, Niger State. Just not again!!!

Nigeria records 634 new Covid-19 cases, total now 154,476

The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) has recorded 634 new cases of COVID-19, bringing the total number of infections in the country to 154,476.

The NCDC disclosed this on its official Twitter handle on Thursday.

Nigeria also recorded six COVID-19 deaths, raising the total fatality in the country to 1,891.

“On the 25th of February 2021, 634 new confirmed cases and 6 deaths were recorded in Nigeria.

Nigerian actress, model and media personality Nancy Isime has said she lost her mum when she was five years old and attempted suicide as a child.

The 29-year-old stated this in an interview published by BBC Pidgin on Wednesday.

She said she started working at the age of 17.

“I lost my mum at five. I didn’t really have a smooth childhood. I suffered from depression and attempted my first suicide in childhood. It was actually the only but I was able to go through all that and I’m still here today.

Angry deceased man’s relatives attack policeman at panel

There was pandemonium on Thursday at the Independent Investigative Panel on Human Rights Violations by operatives of the disbanded Special Anti-Robbery Squad and other police units as relations of a deceased victim raised objections to the testimonies of ASP Kingsley Ojeomokhai.

The enraged family members said the police officer was telling lies against their late brother, Festus Idehen, while he was giving his evidence on the circumstances that led to his death in 2016.

A statement by the Head of Media, NHRC, Hajiya Fatima Agwai Mohammed, said they called him names and rained curses on him, saying, “You will see.”

Ojeomokhai, in his testimony before the panel, claimed that late Festus had tried to incite a mob against him after labelling him an armed robber before he identified himself as a policeman.

S.e.x tape of LAUTECH lecturer leaked

The Ladoke Akintola University of Technology (LAUTECH) is currently topping the Twitter trend in the wake of another s.e.x tape allegedly involving one of its lecturers.

The footage which was put out on the microblogging platform shows a middle-aged man been filmed by a third party having his way with a lady whose face was shielded.

This is coming weeks after a young lady alleged to be a LAUTECH student was filmed in a series of leaked s.e.x footage.

However, the authorities of the university had denied knowledge of her, decrying how the public soil the name of the school.

Twitter considers charging users for special content, in revenue push

Twitter on Thursday, said  it plans to offer a subscription service in which users would pay for special content from high-profile accounts, part of an economic model to diversify its revenue.

The globally popular social media platform announced the potential new Super Follows service at its annual investor meeting, as it searches for new revenue streams beyond targeted advertising.
