Paris enters new month-long partial lockdown amid soaring Covid-19 cases

A third of France's population was under a new partial lockdown Saturday to stop the spread of Covid-19, as some European countries resumed AstraZeneca vaccinations following an all-clear from EU regulators and the WHO. 

The pandemic is still speeding up worldwide, with the number of new global coronavirus infections rising by 14 percent over the last week compared to the previous week, according to AFP data. 

Fighting to prevent yet another wave of the virus, several countries in Europe went back into partial lockdown on Saturday -- with Poland, parts of Ukraine and some French regions all waking up to tight new restrictions. 

Parisians packed trains leaving the capital and crammed into shops ahead of the new restrictions coming into force, which will apply to Paris and several other regions for a month.

''Nigerians to get NDLEA drug-free certificates before marriage''

Buba Marwa, the chairman of Nigerian drugs enforcement office NDLEA, has said young Nigerians would soon be required to certify themselves free from illicit drugs before they could get married.

Mr Marwa says parents will be asked to list drug-free documents as part of requirements for approving their children’s marriage.

Mr Marwa made the disclosure in Ado-Ekiti at a colloquium tagged: “Walk Away from Drugs’’, a programme organised by Ekiti Ministry of Justice He described the menace of drug use in the country as “worrisome’’.

“In Nigeria today, there is no challenge that is more worrisome than drug abuse.

INEC halts Ekiti East bye-election; 3 voters killed

Political thugs opened fire during a local by-election in Ekiti on Saturday, leading to the death of three voters and left a policewoman critically injured.

INEC Resident Electoral Commissioner, Dr. Tella Adeniran, confirmed the incident.

Adeniran said the election was peaceful until arm-wielding hoodlums stormed two polling units of ward 009 unit 008 and 009 and started shooting sporadically.

This development led to the suspension of the bye-election to fill the vacant seat of Ekiti East Constituency 1 in the State House of Assembly.

Lady demands N5bn compensation over father’s killing at El-Zakzaky’s protest

20-year-old woman, Fatima Kabiru-Ahmed, has sued the Inspector-General (IG) of Police, Mohammed Adamu, and others, demanding N5 billion compensation over the alleged killing of her father.

In a fundamental rights enforcement suit marked: FHC/ABJ/CS/364/2021 filed by her lawyer, Bala Dakum, at the Federal High Court, Abuja, the woman said the killing of her father, Mr Kabiru, by the police amounted to gross violation of his rights as enshrined in 1999 Constitution.

Also joined in the suit dated and filed on March 16 as second to fourth respondents respectively is the Commissioner of Police, FCT Command, Bala Ciroma; the Attorney General of the Federation, Abubakar Malami and Medical Director, Wuse District Hospital.

Just In: Gunmen abduct Oba Alade Meta of Imope land

A traditional ruler, Oba Tajudeen Omotayo, the Oba Alade Meta of  Imope land, a community in Ijebu Igbo area of Ogun State was on Saturday abducted by some yet to be identified gunmen.

Available details of the circumstances in which the traditional was abducted are still sketchy.

But sources from the town said the Oba left his palace around 11 am in his butter colored special utility vehicle with plate number W 3J9 Ogun for Ijebu-Ode.

And on his way back home around 3:00pm, the unknown gun men accosted him at Okeeri of area of Imope and took him away leaving his vehicle on the road.

Governor Ortom confirms herdsmen attack on his convoy

Governor Samuel Ortom on Saturday said herdsmen attacked him on his farm near Tyo-mu, along Makurdi-Gboko Highway.

Mr Ortom said during a press briefing at the Benue Peoples House in Makurdi shortly after the attack that he was inspecting the farm when herders ambushed him and his security personnel, opening heavy fire.

The governor quickly linked the attack to the anti-open grazing policy of the state, saying a law that was adopted in 2018 against nomadic grazing will not be repealed because it has been popular amongst residents.

Last month, authorities in Benue impounded 210 cows from Fulani herders who had violated the state Open Grazing Prohibition and Ranches Establishment Law of 2017. The cattle were later released after owners reportedly paid N5 million in fines.

White house speaks after Joe Biden ''fall''

The White House has said that President Joe Biden is 100 percent fine after he tripped while walking up the stairs to board Air Force One on Friday.

Karine Jean-Pierre, White House press secretary said this while speaking to journalists.

Biden stumbled as he climbed the plane’s steps.

He appeared to fall initially, got up and tripped a second time.

He struggled to get up the second time for a brief moment, before making it up, turning to wave at the top of the steps before entering the plane.

Arsenal block Thomas Partey from playing for Ghana

Arsenal FC have blocked their midfielder Thomas Partey from joining the Black Stars due to coronavirus quarantine rules.

The Black Stars are set to play South Africa and Sao Tome in their African Cup of Nations qualifiers.

The £45m Arsenal signing is not the only star missing in Ghana’s squad.

Crystal Palace and Championship outfit Swansea City have also blocked brothers Jordan Ayew and Andre Ayew from linking up with their Ghaaian team-mates.

Denmark reports two cases of serious illness, including one death, after AstraZeneca shot

Denmark said on Saturday that one person had died and another fell seriously ill with blood clots and cerebral haemorrhage after receiving the AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccination.

The two, both hospital staff members, had received the AstraZeneca vaccine less than 14 days before getting ill, the authority that runs public hospitals in Copenhagen said.

The Danish Medicines Agency confirmed it had received two “serious reports”, without giving further details.

There were no details of when the hospital staff got ill.

Nigeria drops in UN-backed world happiness ranking

Nigeria has been ranked the 116th happiest place in the world, a spot lower than its position last year, indicating the country’s declining perception on key indicators.

The United Nations-sponsored 2021 World Happiness Report ranked Finland as the happiest country in the world, followed by Denmark, Switzerland, Iceland, and the Netherlands.

The countries regarded as the most unhappy in the world were Afghanistan, followed by Lesotho, Botswana, Rwanda, and Zimbabwe.

The top 10 countries are in the EU, except New Zealand that took the ninth position. The United States ranked 19th while Mauritius was ranked as the happiest African nation at 50th position.

Yoruba Nation: Alake of Egbaland tells Sunday Igboho, we can't let that happen

The Alake of Egbaland, Oba Adedotun Gbadebo has called on Sunday Igboho to shelve plans of declaring an Independent Yoruba nation.

The first class Yoruba monarch said he opposes the declaration of Yoruba nation and South-West secession from Nigeria.

Oba Adedotun, a retired Brigadier-general, said Nigeria cannot afford to go through another civil war.

He stressed that no country in the world will be willing to have over 250 million Nigerians as refugees.

Video: Gas explosion rocks Alapere, building destroyed

A one storey building has been destroyed at Alapere area of Ketu, Lagos, after a gas explosion rocked the building.

Officials of the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency, LASEMA, arrived the scene of the incident at No 44 Moses Street, Oshogun, Alapere, Lagos for rescue operation.

Director General, LASEMA, Dr. Femi Oke-Osanyintolu said on arrival at the scene, it was discovered that the storey building was in a state of collapse with several visible cracks on load bearing walls

He said initial investigation suggested that that a gas cylinder explosion triggered the incident.

You remain deregistered, INEC tells 74 political parties

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has insisted that none of the 74 parties deregistered last year would participate in the electoral process until the Supreme Court decides otherwise.

It said it would continue to recognise and allow only the 18 registered parties to nominate and contest elections in the country.

The commission, against the backdrop of legal suits filed against it by the 74 political parties, said on Friday, that its decision to strike them out remained intact until the Supreme Court decided otherwise.

“The Commission will continue to recognise and deal with only the 18 registered political parties pending the final resolution and determination of the various appeals filed and pending before the Supreme Court.

Actress, Jaiye Kuti, has said that she was shocked when she heard rumours that she got married to popular fuji artiste, Wasiu Alabi, aka Pasuma.

Kuti made this known as a guest at Inspire Nigeria Summit, a virtual summit held to motivate young Nigerians.

Fani-Kayode never assaulted any of us, says family nurse

Favour Anthony, a nurse working for Femi Fani-Kayode, Ex-minister of aviation, has quashed allegations of assaults and s.e.x.ual harassment against him by Anthonia Uchenna, his former domestic staff.

Uchenna, who previously worked as a nanny with the ex-minister, had earlier alleged that Fani-Kayode once ordered his bodyguards to strip and flog her.

In a now-viral video, the lady had also claimed that the ex-minister s.e.x.ually assaulted her, adding that he usually threatens to beat her up each time she complained.

The nanny had claimed that other domestic staff of the former minister had similar experiences which forced some of them to resign at the time.

US rapper, Diamonté Quiava Valentin Harper popularly known as Saweetie has confirmed she broke up with rapper boyfriend Quavo of Migos.

Saweetie and Quavo unfollowed each other on Instagram, which led to speculations by fans that the couple have indeed broken up.

However, Saweetie yesterday, March 19, took to her Twitter to confirm the news and to put a stop to the rumors that were circulating about her and her ex-boyfriend.

The “My Type” rapper in her tweet, hinted that Quavo cheated on her with another woman.

Two suspected bandits, Abdullahi Danshoho and Illiyasu Salleh, have owned up to their roles in the kidnapping of two patients and a nurse at a hospital in Nasarawa State.

The suspects and their gang members at large reportedly invaded Kunwarke Clinic and Maternity in Lafia, Nasarawa State, sometime in November 2020 and abducted two patients and a nurse.

They were alleged to have collected N6m ransom before freeing their victims.

Danshoho and Salleh were arrested recently by operatives of the Inspector-General of Police Intelligence Response Team led by DCP Abba Kyari.

Queen Elizabeth II’s birthday parade cancelled for second year

The annual military parade in central London for Queen Elizabeth II’s official birthday has been cancelled for a second year owing to the coronavirus pandemic, Buckingham Palace said on Friday.

The “Trooping the Colour” event in June normally features hundreds of personnel from Britain’s most prestigious regiments for a centuries-old spectacle of pageantry in front of thousands of spectators.

Last year, because of the health crisis, it was switched to a low-key celebration in the grounds of Windsor Castle west of London, and the palace said the same was likely again.

“Following consultation with government and other relevant parties it has been agreed that the Queen’s official birthday parade, also known as Trooping the Colour, will not go ahead this year in its traditional form in central London,” a statement read.

Bandits kill 13, raze 56 houses in Kaduna

No fewer than 13 persons have been killed while seven others were injured in series of bandits’ attacks on communities in Zangon Kataf, Kauru and Chikun local government areas of Kaduna State.

In one of the attacks on Kizachi village, Kauru LGA, 56 houses, 16 motorcycles and several barns were razed.

Kaduna State Commissioner of Internal Security and Home Affairs, Samuel Aruwan, confirmed the attacks in a statement yesterday, saying that seven people were injured in the attacks.

According to Aruwan, “thirteen people have been killed and seven others injured in series of attacks across communities in Zangon Kaaf, Kauru and Chikun local government areas.

Dino Melaye apologizes to God for supporting Buhari, calls his agenda “the greatest scam”

Former senator who represented the Kogi West Senatorial District, Dino Melaye, has apologized to God for supporting President Muhammadu Buhari in 2015.

Melaye, speaking on Channels Television’s Politics Today on Friday, also described Buhari’s agenda as the “greatest scam that came out of Africa”.

The former lawmaker insisted the Buhari administration has failed Nigerians in all aspects from security to economy and infrastructure.

Docs baffled as 25-year-old housewife starts crying blood on her period

Doctors were left stunned when a housewife on her period started crying tears of blood in an extremely rare medical anomaly.

The 25-year-old woman from Chandigarh, India, was diagnosed with haemolacria after seeking help for the condition at the city’s Post-Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research.

Haemolacria is a physical condition that causes a person to produce tears that are partially composed of blood.

The condition has been famous in movies such as Casino Royale with the James Bond villain, Le Chiffre, who wept blood from a damaged vessel in his left eye.

Police arrest 28-year old Oshodi gay who assaulted man for refusing his advances

A 28-year-old gay Jane Otubo has been arrested by the Lagos Police Command for homos.e.x.uality.

Otubo, a male food seller who hails from Enugu State, was arrested by operatives attached to the Makinde Police Station in Oshodi.

The suspect was nabbed after attempting to forcefully have carnal knowledge of one Francis Azeez who had spent a week at his place.

Lagos State police command in a statement said:

Warder shot dead as gunmen open fire on Prison Officials as they convey suspects to court

A vehicle conveying some suspects to court was attacked in Ekwulobia area of Aguata Local Government Area of Anambra State on Friday.

At least persons, including an official of the Nigerian Correctional Service, were reportedly shot dead in the attack which witnesses said happened around 11am.

Reacting to the incident, the Public Relations Officer of Anambra State Command of the Nigeria Correctional Service, Mr Francis Ekechukwu, said the command was devastated by the attack.

“You know these attacks have been on for sometime now, but we never envisaged it will get to us. Yes, there was an attack on our men, and two persons were killed. One of them is our staff, but the other is not.

''I hope we can work together '' - WHO chief tells Tanzania's new President as the former one never believed in Coronavirus

The head of the World Health Organization (WHO), Ethiopian Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, has sent his congratulations to Tanzania's newly inaugurated president, saying he hopes they can work together to tackle coronavirus.

"I look forward to working with you to keep people safe from Covid-19, end the pandemic and achieve a healthier Tanzania. Together!" he tweeted.

Samia Suluhu Hassan has just been sworn-in as the East African nation's new leader - two days after the death of President John Magufuli.

The late president gained international notoriety last year for his handling of the coronavirus pandemic.

The drama happened when the petitioner’s counsel, Barr Kayode Adebisi was cross-examining a police Inspector, named Muritala Alayande in a case where a businessman, Mr Paul Adeolu, alleged that police aided syndicates who defrauded him N36million to escape justice after being apprehended.

In the petition the businessman submitted before the panel, he alleged that the police collected money from those syndicates, arrested him and tortured him instead of helping him to pursue justice.

DJ Cuppy drops lawsuit against Davido’s aide

Singer and disc jockey DJ Cuppy has announced the discontinuation of her libel and defamation suit against an aide of music superstar Davido, Israel Afeare.

The 28-year-old announced this in a tweet on Friday.

She also advised other social media users to be sure of their facts before lending their voice on any topic.

She wrote: “Following the public apology of Isreal Afeare, I have decided to no longer proceed with the lawsuit and have instructed my lawyers accordingly.

27 year old nurse dies after AstraZeneca vaccination

A nurse was reportedly dead on Friday after receiving the AstraZeneca vaccine in Georgia’s southwestern city of Akhaltsikhe on Thursday.

The 27-year-old nurse, Megi Bakradze, who developed an alleged anaphylactic reaction after receiving the first shot of the vaccine, died after being transported to a hospital in Tbilisi, local Interpressnews reported.

The report said four cities, Khelvachauri, Keda, Shuakhevi and Khulo in the western region of Adjara has suspended the vaccination process.

Earlier on Thursday, after assessing the case, Georgian Health Minister Ekaterine Tikaradze announced that Georgia will continue using the AstraZeneca vaccine despite the recent case of an alleged complication.

The global media company and American business magazine, Forbes, has frowned at reports that American rapper, Kanye West is the richest black American.

Forbes focuses mainly on listing and ranking in business, investment, technology, entrepreneurship, leadership and marketing.

The magazine took to its official Twitter account @forbes on Friday, saying, “No, Kanye West is not the richest black American. On Wednesday, multiple outlets reported that Kanye West is the richest black person in America, worth as much as $6.6 billion.”

The news surfaced after Bloomberg reported that West’s sneaker brand, Yeezy, and Yeezy Gap, which had yet to sell one stitch of clothing, had a combined value of as much as $4.7 billion.
