Super Eagles’ Alex Iwobi has tested positive for Covid-19 following mandatory tests taken alongside other players and staff members.

The team had been subjected to coronavirus tests before leaving Nigeria and on arrival at Porto Novo Friday.

Grammy win: Wike hosts Burna Boy, calls him pride of Rivers

Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike has described Grammy award-winning Afrobeat artist, Burna Boy, whose real name is, Damini Ogulu, as the pride of the state.

Wike spoke when Burna Boy, his parents and management team paid him a courtesy visit at the Government House, Port Harcourt today.

The governor said the state was proud of Burna Boy for the rare distinction of becoming a winner of the prestigious Grammy award.

He said: “There is no Rivers person that will say he or she is not happy with the kind of pride you’ve brought us. I am very happy and I can tell you, whatever you think we can do to promote you, we will continue to do it.”

Despite Sharia, brewery named biggest taxpayer in Kaduna

The Nigerian Breweries Plc (NB) has been recognised as the biggest taxpayer in Kaduna, bagging the Kaduna State Internal Revenue Service (KADIRS) 2020 Highest Taxpayer, Pay-As-You-Earn Award.

The company engages in the brewing and marketing of Lager beer, Stout and non-alcoholic malt drinks. The company’s product range includes Star, Gulder, Legend Extra Stout, Maltina and Malta.

Adjudged as the political capital of Northern Nigeria, Kaduna is one of the 12 northern states to have adopted the Shari’a Law which prohibits the sale or consumption of alcoholic beverages.

There have been many instances of destruction of alcoholic beverages in states such as Kano, Bauchi and Jigawa where Shari’a Law is practiced, to the chagrin of citizens who wonder why states who share from revenues accruing from sale of alcoholic beverages across the country could hypocritically ban the same in their domain on religious grounds.

70-year-old Boko Haram drug supplier arredted by NDLEA

The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) says it has arrested a 70-year-old suspected drug trafficker, who allegedly supplied illicit substances to Boko Haram insurgents and bandits.

The agency’s spokesman Femi Babafemi disclosed this in a statement made available to reporters on Saturday in Abuja.

Mr Babafemi said the suspect, who hailed from Dallawa town, Agadez, Niger Republic, was arrested on Thursday with 10 pallets of skunk in Jebba, Niger.

According to him, he had brought into Nigeria hides and skin from the Niger Republic to sell in Lagos.

Nigeria qualify for AFCON 2021, defeat Squirrels of Benin 1-0

Despite training in the dark last night as they arrived Benin Republic, the Super Eagles of Nigeria has defeated the Squirrels of Benin Republic by a lone goal to secure their qualification for the 2021 Africa Cup Nations to be held in Cameroon next year.

The injury time goal by Paul Onuachu at the Stade Charles de Gaulle, Porto Novo, ensured that the three time African champions retained top spot in Group L.

With one match remaining in the qualifiers, Nigeria now has 11 points, followed by Benin Republic with 7 points.

Earlier in the day, a barren draw between Lesotho and Sierra Leone in the group’s other match had already cleared Nigeria’s passage to the tournament.

Fleeing killer-cop arrested for killing Lagos businessman

The Lagos State Police Command has arrested fleeing killer-cop, Jonathan Company who allegedly shot a businessman, Jelili Bakare dead at Sangotedo area of Lagos.

The tragedy occurred on March 18, 2021 at Sangotedo area of Lagos State, at about 11.30pm.

A statement issued by Police Public Relations Officer, PPRO, Muyiwa Adejobi on Saturday, said the killing occurred at Quinox lounge at Sangotedo, when the policeman, attached to the Mounted Troop, Force Animal Branch of the Nigeria Police, had an argument with the deceased and shot him dead.

“Immediately after the incident, the Inspector fled but was eventually arrested by the Divisional Police Officer, Ogombo Division, Lagos State.

EFCC boss, Abdulrasheed Bawa threatens to resign

The Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Abdulrasheed Bawa, has threatened to resign from the position, if he is asked to compromise.

Bawa said this when he featured in a NTA interview programme One-on-One on Friday.

His words were posted in a statement on the EFCC’s official Twitter handle.

“We need to change our attitudes in Nigeria,” Bawa was quoted to have said.

Bandits place N50m ransom on kidnapped RCCG members

Members of the Redeemed Christian Church of God, Kaduna kidnapped by bandits on their way to Kafanchan from Kaduna have been placed on a N50million ransom.

A senior Pastor of the Church who confirmed the contact and the amount, explained that the eight members were kidnapped from the church bus at about 6:00 p.m while on their way for a church assignment.

The RCCG cleric, who is a Special Assistant to the General Overseer assured, “It’s true. It happened around 6:00 p.m. They are asking for N50 million.”

He said that the abducted persons were adult missionaries, male and female, from Kaduna Province 1 going to Kafanchan for prayer work.

Biden invites Buhari, 39 other World leaders for Climate Change summit

U.S. President Joe Biden has invited President Muhammadu Buhari and 39 other world leaders to a virtual summit to galvanise efforts in tackling the climate crisis.

The two-day summit is expected to mark America’s return to the frontlines of the fight against human-caused climate change, after former President Trump disengaged from the process.

The White House said the summit is scheduled for April 22-23. It hopes that the meeting will help shape, speed up and deepen global efforts to cut climate-wrecking fossil fuel pollution.

“The summit will also highlight examples of how enhanced climate ambition will create good-paying jobs, advance innovative technologies, and help vulnerable countries adapt to climate impacts,” the White House said in a statement Friday.

Isreal Adesanya ditched by BMW over r.a.p.e comment

Nigerian-born New Zealand Ultimate Fighting Championship star, Isreal Adesanya aka Style Bender have been ditched by BMW.

BMW dropped Adesanya as a brand ambassador after the offensive comments he made in an online video.

Adesanya was due to be unveiled as the new face of the BMW New Zealand on Monday, the same day as the launch of the new BMW M3 and M4 models, but the German car manufacturer has decided to go a different way.

Adesanya had in the course of the week in what he perceived as a ‘fight talk’ had told possible future opponent, Kevin Holland in an online video, “Bro, I will fu**ing r3pe you.”

Fire guts seven vehicles on Otedola Bridge [photos]

Tragedy struck in the early hours of Saturday, when fire gutted seven vehicles on Otedola Bridge along Lagos-Ibadan Expressway.

It could not be confirmed if there were casualties, but the Director-General, Lagos State Emergency Management Agency, LASEMA, Dr. Femi Oke-Osanyintolu, confirmed the incident.

According to Oke-Osanyintolu, the fire has been doused by a rescue team and men of Lagos Fire Service. 

“Mop up is being concluded at about 6a.m. Saturday and recovery effort ongoing”, he said.

Myanmar forces kill 19 on Armed Forces Day

At least 19 people across Myanmar were shot dead by security forces on Saturday, according to emergency workers and witnesses, as the junta celebrates Armed Forces Day with a military parade in the capital Naypyidaw.

AFP has independently confirmed that nine died in the central Mandalay region, three in northern Shan state, one in the ancient city of Bagan, and six in Myanmar’s commercial hub Yangon.

Local media puts the toll far higher.

Meanwhile, the embassies of the European Union and the United Kingdom have condemned the killing of “unarmed civilians” in Myanmar on Saturday, coinciding with the junta’s Armed Forces Day.

A young Nigerian man, Charlie has reportedly drowned in a swimming pool.

His death comes just a day after he made a Facebook post about death. He also spoke about how people will react to his death in the post.

He stated in the post that people who were never close to him would even claim to be his best friends after his death. He wrote;

Benin vs Nigeria: 2 players contract Covid-19 ahead of kickoff

Two Players have tested positive for Covid-19 ahead of Benin Republic’s 2021 Africa Cup of Nations, AFCON, qualifier against Nigeria on Saturday evening in Porto Novo, Completesports reports.

The two players that contracted the deadly coronavirus are Marcellin Koukpo and Jacques Bessan.

Koukpo and Bessan will play no part in Benin’s clash against the Super Eagles of Nigeria at the Stade Charles de Gaulle.

Benin head coach, Michel Dussuyer, has, however, called up Yannick Aguemon and Jean Ogouchi as replacements for Koukpo and Bessan.

Disaster averted as fuel tanker overturns in Osogbo

What could have been a huge fire disaster was in the early hours of Saturday averted when a Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) laden NIPCO truck overturned and spilled its content.

The Operations Commander of the Federal Fire Service, Osun Command, Isaac Femi Akinjobi, revealed to Daily Post that the mishap occured at about midnight on Saturday at the November 27th Interchange, Gbongan-Ibadan road, Osogbo.

According to the Operations Commander, the NIPCO truck was descending from the Interchange and heading towards Dele Yes Sir Area of Osogbo when it overturned and the head detached from the rest of the body.

He stated that immediately the accident occurred at the popular interchange early on Saturday morning around 12 am, the operatives of the Federal Fire Service arrived at the scene at 12:30 am after receiving an SOS call.

Woman accused of witchcraft petitions NHRC panel, gets N300,000 compensation

The son of an indigent woman who was accused of witchcraft has testified in Adamawa State how his mother was subjected to “cruel, inhuman, and degrading treatment” by her accusers.

The son told a panel of the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) sitting in Yola that the accusation which started as a neighbourhood gossip was reinforced by a pastor who was later joined by some of his church members in abusing his mother.

The concerned son, who spoke in Hausa before the NHRC’s Special Investigation Panel on Sexual and Gender-Based Violence (SGBV), said things got out of hand one day when while in church, a pastor of the church said he got a revelation that his mother was a witch.

Continuing, he said the people in the church were also mentioning her name and saying she was the only one who could set them free.

Train collision leaves 32 dead in Egypt

At least 32 people have died after two trains collided head-on in Egypt.

More than 80 people are also said to have been injured in the accident north of the city of Sohag, according to reports.

Dozens of ambulances have headed to the scene and are taking people to hospital, with the country's health minister also said to be on the way.

Pictures on social media show people stood around and on top of the wreckages near a body of water.

RCCG members kidnapped in Kaduna

Members of the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG) were kidnapped in Kaduna Friday evening.

The gunmen are suspected to be bandits who have been terrorizing the Northwest region.

Head, Media and Public Relations of RCCG, Pastor Olaitan Olubiyi, confirmed the abduction to Tribune.

The spokesman said the kidnappers were yet to contact the church or the family members.

Kaduna abduction: Student’s father dies from heart attack

Ibrahim Shamaki, the father of one of the tertiary institution students kidnapped in Kaduna State, is dead.

On March 11, bandits stormed the Federal College of Forestry Mechanization in Afaka, and took 39 undergraduates.

Ibrahim was the father of Fatima Shamaki, one of the girls with hijab seen in the video released by the abductors.

He died of a heart attack days after falling ill with no good news about the daughter.

Sporadic shootings in Borno as soldiers protest non-payment of allowances

There were sporadic shootings on Thursday night in Borno as soldiers protest deployment to a location in the theatre of operation.

The soldiers shot sporadically into the air to express their grievance for the deployment as they did not have the equipment to match the firepower of Boko Haram.

The soldiers from the Maimalari barracks trooped to the Theatre Command in Borno State to protest the deployment.

They accused the military authority of not paying their allowances and giving them dilapidated equipment to fight the insurgents.

Former U.S. President Trump has offered some revisionist perspective about the rioters he incited to storm the U.S. Capitol on 6 Jan.

He said they posed “zero threat” to those inside the building and they were even kissing and hugging the police.

Six people, including a police officer, died during the breach, on a day the Congress was certifying the electoral college votes won massively by President Joe Biden.

Super Eagles train in the dark in Benin Republic ahead of tomorrow's match [video]

The floodlight at Stade Charles De Gaulle was allegedly turned off as Super Eagles trained in Porto-Novo, Benin Republic, this evening.

The training session comes as the Eagles landed in Benin today ahead of the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifier against Benin Republic.

The Super Eagles are due to face the Squirrels on Saturday.

Nollywood actress, Toyin Abraham today narrowly escaped death on her movie set.

The actress was on set shooting with her collegues when they were all attacked.

Although she is yet to give full details of what happened, she informed her fans on Instagram it wasn;t funny and thank God they are alive.

“What happened to me and my crew today, in the history of my film career, I have never seen!! I thank you ALMGHTY GOD FOR OUR LIVES!”

The incident happened while on set of ‘The Ghost and The Tout too’ a sequel to Toyin Abraham’s previous movie, ‘The Ghost and the tout’.

Owner of 10 Kobo Wine Place, mother arrested for multi-million naira internet fraud

Operatives of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, Lagos Zonal Office, have arrested Ibeh Theophilus Uche, Chief Executive Officer (CEO), 10 Kobo Wine Place, Ikotun, Lagos, alongside his mother for their alleged involvement in internet fraud to the tune of N50 million in Lagos.

It was learnt that the 28-year-old suspect was arrested recently in his room in Radisson Blu Anchorage Hotel, Victoria Island, Lagos, following credible intelligence reports about his alleged criminal activities.

A statement by the EFCC’S Head, Media and Publicity, Wilson Uwajaren on Friday said during interrogation, Uche, who presented himself “variously as Rachael Armstrong, Keanu Reeves, Rebekah Schwarzenberger, Keanu Private, Elizabeth Hortman and Stefan Paulson”, confessed to being into Bitcoin investment scam, romance scam and identity theft.

‘Governor Eniola Ajala’ of Lagos State has called for the provision of more infrastructure for schools, particularly the ones that produced the winner of the New Era Spelling Bee Competition.

Ms Ajala, while holding an extraordinary Exco meeting with the State Executive Council at the Exco Chamber with her cabinet members on Friday, thanked Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s administration for the honour bestowed on the winners of the school competitions.
