Another win! Germany to set up global health facility in Ghana

German government has announced that it would be launching a German-West African Center for Global Health and Pandemic Prevention in Ghana. 

German ambassador to Ghana, Christoph Retzlaff, made this announcement on Twitter.  

“Excellent news: Germany will support launch of a new “German-West African Center for Global Health and Pandemic Prevention,” Mr Retzlaff said. “It will be located in Ghana and be part of 8 new centers worldwide to fight global challenges.” 

Lately, Ghana appears to be the destination of choice in West Africa for foreign investments.

Nigerian-born British songwriter, Helen Folasade Adu’s transgender son, Izaak Theo, has walked down the aisle with his girlfriend, Margie.

The songwriter’s transgender son took to his social media to display wedding pictures of himself and Margie which occurred on Friday, April 16, 2021 in  Hawaii. 

The development has since generated much conversation among liberals and conservatives.

Iyabo Ojo laments bitterly as she cries out to Sanwo-Olu over Covid-19 restrictions

Nollywood actress and businesswoman, Iyabo Ojo has lamented about the continuous imposition of curfew in the state as she called out the Lagos State governor, Babajide Sanwo Olu.

According to her, the curfew restrictions have started taking its toll on businesses as lots of bar and club owners in Lagos, are running into serious debt and loss. She pleaded with the governor and the President to come to their aid and rescue them.

Queen wipes away tears as she follows her beloved Prince Philip's coffin [photos]

The Queen wiped away tears and was forced to mourn alone away from her family in St George's Chapel during Prince Philip's Covid-hit Windsor Castle funeral today as she said an emotional final goodbye to her 'strength and stay' after their extraordinary 73-year life together.

Her Majesty looked grief-stricken and bowed her head in reverence as she accompanied her beloved husband's coffin on its final journey while their eldest son Prince Charles cried as he walked behind the casket into church followed by other devastated royals. 

The Duke of Edinburgh's coffin was covered in his personal standard and carried his sword, naval cap and a wreath of flowers with a handwritten note from his wife as pallbearers placed him on to his extraordinary self-designed green Land Rover Defender hearse in the castle's quadrangle packed with hundreds of armed personnel.

Suspected herdsmen butcher family of four, 3 others in Benue

Armed men suspected to be killer herdsmen, have butchered a family of four and three other residents of Mbamondu community, Modern Market Council Ward in Makurdi Local Government Area of Benue state.

Daily Post gathered that the incident occurred at about 1am on Saturday morning when the assailants invaded the community.

Aside those butchered, scores of other residents were said to have sustained life threatening injuries and are currently receiving treatment at an undisclosed hospital.

The State Commissioner for Land Survey and Solid Minerals, Mr. Bernard Unenge who is also a native of the community, confirmed the attack.

Uber, Bolt drivers threaten strike on Monday

Some Uber and Bolt e-cab drivers in Lagos on Saturday asked the e-hailing companies to immediately increase fares being charged by the operators, failing which they would go off the roads on Monday.

The e-cab operators, under the aegis of Professional E-hailing Drivers and Private Owners Association (PEDPA), threatened to embark on the strike if their demands were not met.

Mr Idris Shonuga, National President of PEDPA, at a news conference in Lagos, called for immediate upward review of e-cab fares to reflect the current economic reality in the country.

According to Shonuga, over 95 per cent of e-hailing transactions are consummated through Uber and Bolt platforms.

Gang of robbers busted in Lagos Guest House

The Lagos State Police Command says its operatives have arrested a gang of armed robbers at Ojota area of the State.

According to command’s spokesman, Muyiwa Adejobi the operatives of D9 (Anti Robbery) Section of the State Criminal Investigation Department, Panti, Yaba on Saturday 17th April, 2021 arrested the suspects.

He said the police acted upon information received to arrest the suspects.

The suspects are: Victor Alfred, Chubike Ikeh Donatus and Isiaka Olamide, all 19 years of age, at Marble Guest House, No 33 Ajibike Street, Ogudu Ojota, at about 3.25m.

Joshua insists he would defeat Fury in blockbuster fight

Unified Boxing champion, Anthony Joshua has vowed again that he would defeat WBC title holder Tyson Fury in their forthcoming match to hold later this year.

Joshua told the Jonathan Ross Show, on Saturday when asked if Tyson could win but said unfortunately, he would lose the match.

Asked if Tyson could claim his three major belts, Joshua laughed: “Unfortunately he’s not going to win.”

Joshua also assured that the match would hold this year hinting that it may be by the end of July or early in August.

The winner of BBNaija Season 4, Mercy Eke, is not happy with the claims in some quarters that a man is responsible for her success.

In a video uploaded to her YouTube channel, the reality star said, “In this part of the world, people believe a man is behind the success of a woman, whether she is married or single. 

I work hard for everything I own today. When people say a man is behind these things, I find it appalling. However, it does not get to me anymore because what else would one say? It only shows that my success is visible.”

Ahmed Musa to play for free at Kano Pillars

Ahmed Musa will not be paid in his short stint at Kano Pillars in the Nigeria Premier Football League, Saturday PUNCH reports.

Musa, 28, signed for the four-time Nigerian champions under the Elite Players Programme of the League Management Company, which encourages top Nigerian internationals to play for local clubs.

According to LMC boss Shehu Dikko, the programme works in two ways.

A club can identify and sign such players, or the LMC itself can sign the player and assign them to a club of their choice.

Police take over venue of Yoruba self-determination rally

The police have taken over Mapo Hall, Ibadan the venue of the rally organised by the Prof Banji Akintoye-led Ilana Odua to sensitise people about Yoruba self-determination.

Akintoye, who is an 86-year-old Emeritus Professor of History, was scheduled to lead the rally but punch correspondent observed that the venue is surrounded by armed policemen and armour personnel carrier.

There are more than 20 police vehicles including patrol vans in Mapo Area.

The organisers have also not been seen at the venue although some members were said to have come earlier and left because of the situation there.

Enugu police arrest woman for allegedly killing her stepson

Operatives of the Enugu State Police Command attached to the 9th Mile Police Division have arrested one Mrs. Nnenna Egwuagu for allegedly murdering her stepson.

Command’s spokesperson, Daniel Ndukwe, said the 29-yr-old suspect, who hails from Umulumgbe in Udi Local Council of the state, “administered a noxious substance to her three-year-old stepson, Wisdom Egwuagu, thereby causing his sudden death.”

Ndukwe disclosed that Nnenna’s husband and father of the deceased, Justine Egwuagu, reported the incident to the Police, alleging, “the unusual actions of the suspect towards the child caused his death.”

Russia detains Ukraine’s consulate general for ‘spying’

Russia has detained Ukraine’s consulate general Oleksandr Sosonyuk for “spying”

According to Russia’s Federal Security Service (FSB), Oleksandr Sosonyuk received classified information from law enforcement agency databases.

The spying claims come amid high tension between the two ex-Soviet countries with fears the situation could deteriorate into war.

A statement from the FSB said he was “caught red-handed” in a meeting with a Russian citizen “receiving classified information from law enforcement agencies and FSB databases”.

Man strangles 19-year old boy who borrowed him N100k in order to silence him

A revenue collector in the Umuleri area of Anambra State, Ifeanyi Ezinwa, is being held by the police for the murder of his relative, Chukwuebuka Iloegbunam.

Ezinwa reportedly strangled 19-year-old Iloegbunam for persistently demanding repayment of N100,000 he borrowed from him.

City Round learnt that Ezinwa, 29, asked the victim to meet him at a bush path near a secondary school in the town around 8.30pm on the pretence of paying the debt.

It was said that Ezinwa hid a knife in a loaf of bread and aimed the weapon upon Iloegbunam’s arrival.

Pep Guardiola snubs Yaya Toure’s letter of apology

Manchester City legend Yaya Toure has confirmed he wrote a letter of apology to Pep Guardiola in order to find peace.

Toure, 37, is regarded as one of the club’s greatest ever players winning three Prem titles, the FA Cup and two League Cups during his eight-year stint at Man City but left almost unsung.

Minister of Communications and Digital Economy, Isa Pantami, has explained that forces against the Federal Government policy of compulsory National Identity Number (NIN) registration for all Nigerians and those residing in the country are behind the attacks against him.

Pantami in an exclusive interview with Premium Times dismissed all the allegations against him, describing them as ‘untrue’.

He further denied links to extremist views, saying criminals and other ‘entrenched interests’ are behind the attacks on him. He said, “I have no doubt about this. UK organisation reported TB Joshua's Tv to YouTube for claiming he could “cure” gay people

UK civil rights organisation, OpenDemocracy, masterminded the blocking of Emmanuel TV channel on YouTube, reports have shown.

And Pastor T.B. Joshua’s claim that he could cure gays and lesbians of their s3xual orientation was what provoked the group to file a complaint to YouTube, accusing him of propagating hatred.

UK-based OpenDemocracy filed a complaint after reviewing seven videos posted on TB Joshua Ministries’ YouTube channel between 2016 and 2020, which show the preacher conducting prayers to “cure” gay people.

One of the videos is an update of a prayer session of a woman called Okoye, first broadcast in 2018.

Man who allegedly killed pregnant wife still in custody - Police

The Police in Lagos says Anthony Ikpeama, a man accused of killing his wife, Adaeze, is still in custody.

Anthony allegedly murdered his 28-year-old pregnant spouse, a Barrister, while on admission bed at Doyen Hospital in Ajahe

Muyiwa Adejobi, the Police Public Relations Officer, in a statement confirmed the case had been transferred to the Criminal Investigation Department, Panti, Yaba, for investigation.

“The suspect has not been released. It is a capital offence and the police will not grant him an administrative bail for whatever reason.”

Peaky Blinders actress Helen McCrory is dead

Popular Peaky Blinders actress, Helen McCrory who played the character of Aunt Polly has died after battling cancer.

She was 52.

The actress starred in other movies such as James Bond film Skyfall and was seen on screen in the TV series Quiz and Roadkill last year.

The news of her death was broken by her husband, Damian Lewis on Twitter on Friday. He, however, did not disclose when exactly the actress died.

AKA’s fiancée: Nellie Tembe’s father says daughter did not commit suicide

Moses Tembe, the father of AKA‘s fiancée has negated the reports that his daughter, Anele “Nelli” Tembe, committed suicide.

Moses made this known at Anele’s funeral which took place at the Durban International Conference Centre on Friday. The service was also live streamed on YouTube.

An emotionally-charged letter from Moses was read out by businessman Sandile Zungu, who said the letter was a reflection of a “heartbroken father”.

“I wasn’t there when Anele met her fate last Sunday. I neither seek to attack any person nor cast aspersions or suspicions nor stigmatise any mental condition. However, I can’t allow an unfortunate narrative to go unchallenged. A narrative that irks me no end as a father, which maliciously pervades some circles, is that Anele, my daughter, was chronically suicidal or had suicidal tendencies,” he wrote.

Sad photos! Pregnant woman dies inside a commercial bus in Anambra state

A yet to be identified  pregnant woman has died inside a commercial bus in Oyi Local Government Area of Anambra state. 

One of the the passengers, Gifted Joseph, disclosed this on Facebook.

Gift said the incident happened on Thursday, April 15, at Awkuzu Junction. 

According to Ms Joseph, when they got to the junction, the woman suddenly started screaming, saying that she couldn't breath. Few minutes later, she passed away. 

Police arrests wanted criminal terrorizing Ikorodu

Police officers attached to Sagamu Road Division, Ikorodu in Lagos, have arrested a wanted criminal, Rasheed Isiaka.

Lagos Command Public Relations Officer, Muyiwa Adejobi, said the suspect was nabbed on April 15 at about 12:10am at Olowonisaye Street in Ikorodu.

The spokesman said Isiaka terrorized residents and perpetrated many crimes in the area.

Adejobi said he had been under surveillance due to intelligence gathered on him.

Haa! Judiciary workers announce nationwide protest

The Judiciary Staff Union of Nigeria (JUSUN) will hold a nationwide protest on April 19.

The workers who have been on strike since April 6, are demanding financial autonomy for the judiciary.

In a circular on Friday, JUSUN Deputy Secretary, P. Nnamani said the industrial action will continue until the government takes action.

He disclosed that the mass protest decision was agreed on at an emergency meeting of the National Working Committee (NWC) on April 15.

Abductors of Kaduna students demand N500 million ransom

Abductors of the 39 students of the Federal College of Forestry Mechanisation, Afaka, Kaduna have demanded N500 million ransom for the release of the students.

Parents of the abducted students led by their spokesman, Friday Sani made this known while addressing newsmen in the state.

The spokesman said the parents have lost hope in the government, hence the need to solicit help from the world.

Recall that the governor of the state, Nasir Ahmad El-Rufai had vowed that his administration would not engage in negotiation with bandits troubling the state.

The governor recently said even if his son is kidnapped, he would rather pray for him to make heaven than pay ransom.

Turkey bans use of cryptocurrencies citing risks

Bitcoin tumbled more than 4% on Friday after Turkey’s central bank banned the use of cryptocurrencies and crypto assets for purchases citing possible “irreparable” damage and transaction risks.

In legislation published in the Official Gazette, the central bank said cryptocurrencies and other such digital assets based on distributed ledger technology could not be used, directly or indirectly, to pay for goods and services.

The decision could stall Turkey's crypto market, which has gained momentum in recent months as investors joined the global rally in bitcoin, seeking to hedge against lira depreciation and inflation that topped 16% last month.

Nigerians react to Olori Naomi’s prayer for her husband, Ooni

Nigerians have reacted to the eulogy by Prophetess Naomi Silekunola, the wife of the Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi, in a viral video where she prayed for him to have more wives which led to an outburst of laughter in the palace.

Reacting to this, some Nigerians alluded that Prophetess Naomi’s prayers is not coming from her heart and she is targeting anyone who has plans of becoming his second wife.

Gunmen kill six at Plateau beer parlor

The Plateau Police Command has confirmed the killing of six persons by gunmen in Wereng community, Riyom Local Government Area of the state.

The Command’s Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), ASP Ubah Ogaba, confirmed the incident in a statement on Friday in Jos.

According to Ogaba, the incident occurred on Thursday night at a drinking joint.

“The command is aware of the unfortunate attack at a beer parlour in Wereng Village of Riyom where six persons lost their lives.

JAMB bans parents from UTME venues

The Registrar of Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB), Prof. Is’haq Oloyede, has ordered all CBT Centres across the country not to allow parents/guardians into the registration hall again. 

A statement signed by JAMB Spokesman in Ilorin Office, Hassan Lawal, quoted Oloyede as saying that the decision was made after inspecting some of the registration centres in Kwara, which were overcrowded. 

”The registrar said it has been discovered that the parents/guardians are always a distraction to both candidates and the centres and at the same time, congesting the halls by not following the COVID – 19 protocols,” Oloyede was quoted as saying. 

Oloyede also advised  parents/guardians to stop pushing the education of their wards faster than necessary.

College of Education bans students from driving cars, riding motorcycles on campus

Authorities of the Adeyemi College of Education in Ondo State, have banned students from driving cars and riding motorcycles on campus.

The Registrar of the college, Mrs Olufisayo Fakorede, in a circular dated April 15, said the ban was necessary to safeguard the lives of students and staff from students who drove recklessly.

Fakorede said the management had received several complaints from students and staff of the institution over the recklessness by some of the students which necessitated the ban.

“The college management has observed that students who own cars and power bikes drive their cars and ride their power bikes on campus with reckless abandon.

Tinubu finally REACTS to ‘Jagaba rice’ distributed in the North

The National Leader of the ruling All Progressives Congress Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu has denied distributing bags of rice in some states in the northern part of the country.

This was contained in a statement by his Media Aide, Tunde Rahman, in Lagos.

In several photos and videos that made the rounds, residents were seen with bags of rice with the inscription ‘JAGABA - Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu’.

However, Tinubu said he was not responsible for the initiative.  

Parents of abducted Kaduna students ignore El-Rufai, begins talks with bandits

Parents of the abducted students of the Federal College of Forestry Mechanisation, Afaka, Kaduna, have resolved to employ all possible ways towards the release of their abducted children not minding the position of Governor Nasir El-Rufai on the matter.

Spokesman of the parents, Mr Friday Sani, while addressing newsmen in Kaduna on Friday, said, “It is better for us, the affected parents to be arrested than not to allow us negotiate for the release of our children, who are in conditions that are unknown to us.

“As we are talking to you, we (affected parents) are already under arrest because some of us, since the abduction of our children cannot sleep, eat and above all, we have developed psychological problems that are far beyond any other consequence of our planned action for negotiation.”
