Oh no! UCH resident doctor embark on strike

The Association of Resident Doctors (ARD), University College Hospital (UCH) Ibadan, has embarked on an indefinite strike over unpaid four months salaries of some members.

Dr Temitope Hussein, who spoke with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), on Saturday in Ibadan, said the strike was to protest non-payment of January, February, March and April salaries of some members of the association.

Hussein said other issues also included the non-enrolment of some members into the Integrated Payroll and Personnel Information System, (IPPIS), which was affecting payment of their emoluments.

Oduduwa Republic: 11 arrested as Yoruba nation agitators invade Ogun police headquarters

The police in Ogun State today arrested 11 Yoruba nation agitators protesting in Abeokuta.

They were said to have been arrested at the Alake’s palace and taken to the state police headquarters, Eleweran, Abeokuta.

Scores of the Yoruba nation agitators staged a mass rally in the state capital, defying an order by the police against such.

As the agitators caused serious gridlock on major roads, a police helicopter was sighted hovering over some areas.

Gunmen kill two police officers, burn five vehicles at Akwa Ibom police station [photos]

Armed men on Saturday morning attacked a police station at Ibiaku Ntok Okpo in Ikono Local Government area of Akwa Ibom State, allegedly killing two police officers and setting five police vehicles ablaze.

Recall that on Tuesday, the 27th of April, 2021, gunmen stormed Ika police station and killed a female officer, one Esther Akpan and a special police constabulary, Isonuyo Paul who was in a Volvo car.

The press secretary to the chairman of Ikono LGA, Nsisong Ntuk, in a Facebook statement said a flag hoisted at the police station was also carted away.

In the statement entitled “This ill wind will be decimated with utmost precision,” Ntuk wrote”Today, Saturday 1st May 2021, the chairman of Ikono LGA received a distress call about the invasion of the Police Station at Ibiaku Ntok Okpo by criminals alleged to be members of the Eastern Security Network by 3 am.

Truck loses brakes, rams into Imo market and killed 10 women

No fewer than 10 market women were on Saturday afternoon reportedly crushed to death when a truck rammed into Nkwommiri market in Nwangele Local Government Area of Imo State.

The incident also left scores of others wounded, The Nation learnt.

The truck was said to have lost its brakes while descending from Anara road towards Orlu.

It was said to have rammed into women trading on the roadside market parts of the market.

Messi's record-breaking boots bought for £125,000

Lionel Messi’s boots which scored him his one-club record-breaking goal have been bought for £125,000 at an auction.

The Barcelona captain scored his 644th goal for the club in last year’s December 3-0 win over Real Valladolid. The goal broke past record by Pele, who had netted 643 times for Santos, and set Messi as the player to have scored the most goals for a single club.

According to reports by ESPN, the pair of boots were donated to a charity for children’s health by the player, and sportswear company Adidas. They were thereafter exhibited in Cataluña’s Museum of Art (MNAC) in Barcelona for the auction which began on April 19 with a starting price of £40,000.

Nigerian man defending his son during a bus ''attack'' in London is stabbed to death

A 40-year-old Nigerian man, Tunde Fadayomi, has been stabbed to death in London, in the presence of his son.

The incident happened on Thursday evening, as the victim died after being stabbed in Willesden, North London.

According to The Mirror, an eyewitness said the single father was protecting his teenage son who was being threatened on a bus.

After he was repeatedly stabbed, Fadayomi died at the doorway of a chicken shop.

Grammys scrap 'secret' nomination committees

The organizers of the Grammys have said they are scrapping the “secret” committees that select which acts get nominated for the prestigious music awards following criticism from artists and allegations of rigging.

The Recording Academy said nominations for the 2022 awards would be decided by its entire voting membership of more than 11,000, rather than the anonymous 15-30 member expert committees who had previously made the selections.

The Academy said the “significant changes” to the awards process “reflect its ongoing commitment to evolve with the musical landscape and to ensure that the Grammy Awards rules and guidelines are transparent and equitable.”

Lagos Christian pilgrims set for Jordan not Jerusalem

The Lagos Government through the Lagos State Christian Pilgrims Welfare Board (LSCPWB) has opted for holy pilgrimage to Jordan instead of Jerusalem for its forthcoming May/June Pilgrimage.

This is because Israel has refused to open its border for pilgrimage.

Notorious bandit leader Daudawa who led kidnap of Kankara students killed

Notorious bandit leader, Auwalun Daudawa, who led the kidnap of over 300 students of Government Science Secondary School Kankara, Katsina State, has bee killed.

It was gathered that Daudawa had laid down his arms and accepted Governor Bello Matawalle’s peace initiative on February 8.

But a few days ago, it was reported that Daudawa had returned to the forest to continue his banditry.

Man swallows N360m worth of cocaine for N750,000 reward

The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) intercepted a suspected drug trafficker, Chigbogu Obiora, at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA) in Lagos.

Director, Media and Advocacy, Femi Babafemi in a statement disclosed that Obiora excreted 97 wraps of cocaine worth N360 million.

The 47-year-old trafficker was nabbed on Sunday, April, 25 during the inward clearance of Ethiopian Airline.

Obiora arrived in Lagos onboard the airline from Entebbe, Uganda via Addis-Ababa, Ethiopia.

Youth arrest six suspected kidnappers, raze building in Kwara

Some youths in Odo-Owa, Oke- Ero local government area of Kwara state have arrested six suspected kidnappers.

The suspects, it was gathered, had been terrorising the people of the area for months.

The suspected kidnappers, whose gang leader was identified as Ramoni, were said to have abducted four persons, including a Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC) officer in Odo- Owa on Wednesday and demanded N8 million ransom.

It was gathered the family of the victims paid N2m ransom to the suspected kidnappers as first tranche.

Mbaka asked Buhari for contracts, Garba Shehu alleges

Garba Shehu, Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, has alleged that Ejike Mbaka, Spiritual Director of the Adoration Ministry (AMEN), asked President Muhammadu Buhari for contracts but was rebuffed.

Reacting to the priest call for Buhari to resign or be impeached, Shehu said Mbaka once brought three contractors to the president but Buhari insisted that due process must be followed.

Nigerian teen gets 19 $5m scholarship offers in US, Canada

Nigeria’s Victory Yinka-Banjo, a 17-year-old high school graduate, was offered more than $5 million worth of scholarship money for an undergraduate program of study, according to admission documents and estimates of financial aid awards.

“It still feels pretty unbelievable. I applied to so many schools because I didn’t even think any school would accept me,” Victory told CNN, relishing her academic prowess.

Born to Nigerian parents, Chika Yinka-Banjo, a senior lecturer at the University of Lagos and Adeyinka Banjo, procurement and supply chain executive, Victory was given potential full scholarships from the Ivy League schools, Yale College, Princeton University, Harvard College, and Brown University.

NAFDAC approves Pfizer-BioNTech Covid vaccine for emergency use

The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control has announced the approval of Pfizer-BionTech COVID-19 vaccine for emergency use in Nigeria.

The announcement was made at the agency headquarters in Lagos on Friday by NAFDAC Director-General, Prof Mojisola Adeyeye.

According to her, the approval given was not a full one but it would be in effect within the period of getting people vaccinated and gathering data about the adverse effects following immunisation.

The NAFDAC boss also revealed that the agency relied on a more mature regulatory body for its approval, adding that that the agency was at liberty to review its stance since the World Health Organisation had given emergency use listing.

US to prioritise student visa applications for Nigerians

The United States Mission in Nigeria has said it will prioritise visa applications by Nigerians students who hope to resume academic studies in the States by September 2021.

This was contained in a statement signed by the US Mission Country Consular Coordinator, Susan Tuller and released by Temitayo Famutimi of the Public Affairs Section of the US Consulate General on Friday.

According to the statement, the Mission said it would prioritise visa interview appointments for Nigerian students in advance of their programme start date.

The grief-stricken mum told SomersetLive her son "was the reason I woke up everyday" and she struggles to think of a life without him.

Police begin clampdown on tinted glasses, covered number plates

The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Joint Security Team has launched an operation to clampdown on the use of unauthorised covered number plates and tinted vehicles.

The Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) in the territory, ASP Mariam Yusuf, disclosed this in a statement on Friday in Abuja.

Yusuf said the team which is chaired by the Commissioner of Police in the FCT, Mr Bala Ciroma, was part of efforts to rid the territory of criminality.

She said the operation became necessary following the recent security threat analysis conducted by the joint team.

2023 elections under threat - Uche Secondus

National Chairman of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) Prince Uche Secondus has warned that the 2023 general elections will not be realistic if the current security situation in the country continues to deteriorate.

Speaking during an emergency meeting of the National Executive Committee (NEC) of the party in Abuja on Thursday, he advised President Muhammadu Buhari to constitute a National Security Conference for comprehensive and all-embracing deliberations on the future of the country.

Big Brother announces date for Season 6 audition

Impeachment: APC threatens to report Mbaka to Pope

Deputy National Publicity Secretary of the ruling All Progressives Congress APC, Yekini Nabena, has cautioned the Spiritual Director of Adoration Ministry, Rev. Fr. Ejike Mbaka, against making statements that could cause instability in the country, threatening to expose him to the Pope. 

Mbaka had called on the National Assembly to impeach President Muhammadu Buhari if he fails to resign over increased insecurity in the country. 

Reacting to Mbaka’s statement Friday in Abuja, Nabena said it was unfortunate for a man of God “who is supposed to deploy all known spiritual means of averting crisis but rather threatening a democratically elected government for his own personal benefits while pretending to be speaking for the people.”

Niger communities sign “N20m peace deal” with Boko Haram

The embattled Niger communities have resorted to negotiating and signing a peace deal with Boko Haram terrorists to avoid future raids.

This was revealed few days after the Governor of Niger state Sanni Bello confirmed that the insurgents rule five local governments in the state.

The governor said the terrorists had taken over Kaure axis in Shiroro Local Government Area in the state. They are also in Munya LGA.

EFCC arrests 67 suspected Internet fraudsters in Ogun, Ondo

Personnel of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission have arrested 67 suspected Internet fraudsters in Abeokuta, Ogun State, and Owo, Ondo State.

The Head of Media and Publicity, EFCC, Wilson Uwujaren, said 33 suspects were arrested on Thursday at Adigbe, Oloke, Ibara Housing Estate Extension and Idi Ori areas of Abeokuta following actionable intelligence earlier received on their alleged criminal activities.

The Delta State Police Command has uncovered an illegal factory where fake wine is being produced and arrested the owner, one Kenneth Ajie, at Ovwia in the Udu Local Government Area of the state.

The acting Police Public Relations Officer in the state, DSP Bright Edafe, stated this on Thursday in Asaba.

Woman dies in church while fasting to save her troubled marriage

The family of a woman, Joy Owoyele, is in grief after she died during a 14-day fasting in the Isheri Olofin area of Lagos State.

Punch Metro gathered that Owoyele had sought spiritual help regarding her matrimonial challenges at the Christ Apostolic Church, Ori-Oke Gbogunmi, aka Ajanpelenbe Mountain, located on Pipeline Road, Isheri Olofin.

She was said to have been placed on 14-day fasting and prayer, but on the 10th day, things took a tragic turn as she suddenly collapsed after the morning prayers inside the church.

When Punch Metro visited the church on Wednesday, the resident pastor, Alfred Sunday, said after Owoyele lost consciousness during the spiritual exercise, she was rushed to the Igando General Hospital for treatment, adding that she died in the process.

EFCC takes anti-cybercrime campaign to Davido’s father’s university

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission took its campaign against cybercrime to the Adeleke University, Ede.

The university is owned by music star Davido’s father, Adedeji Adeleke.

This is contained in a statement by Wilson Uwujaren, EFCC spokesperson in Ibadan.

Ben Ubi, EFCC Head of Legal and Prosecution, Ibadan Zonal Office, who spoke at the sensitisation lecture, called on youths to shun all forms of cybercrime and lead the fight against corruption.

Mr Ubi urged the youths to apply their strength to the propagation of the anti-corruption crusade.

China to fine people $1,500 for eating too much

Chinese law aimed at preventing food waste came into force on Friday after it was passed on Thursday.

It means that excessive orders placed with catering services can incur a fine of up to 10,000 Yuan ($1,545).

Catering services are now also allowed to charge customers a disposal fee if they leave behind large amounts of food waste.

State broadcaster CGTN reported that the new law was in response to increasing amounts of food being thrown away in China.

Girl tied up and gang-r.a.p.e.d after being lured with the promise of a coronavirus vaccine

A girl has been tied up and gang-r.a.p.e.d after being lured with the promise of a coronavirus vaccine in India.

The two men, identified only as Rocky and Montu, met the victim at a health centre in the Covid-ravaged city of Patna, Bihar state.

After convincing her that they could provide a vaccination, they took the girl to an abandoned house where they r.a.p.e.d her.

The victim told police she was tied up by her hands and feet, and gagged with a handkerchief during the ordeal.

It involved a danfo bus with passengers.

From the videos shared many were seen lying on the floor with some seated and injured.

One however lost his life before the rescue team arrived.
