Six officers killed as gunmen attack Akwa Ibom police station

Gunmen suspected to be members of the Indigenous People of Biafra launched another attack on Odoro Ikpe Police Station, in Ini LGA of Akwa Ibom State, killing six officers on duty.

It was gathered that the attack occurred in the early hours of Saturday when people were still sleeping.

Punch correspondent reports that the early morning attack is one of the series of attacks against security operatives by the armed men.

Veteran actor, Kayode Olaiya, popularly known as Aderupoko, says that having tribal marks is not shameful, but is rather an advantage to his acting career.

In an interview with Saturday Beats, Aderupoko said, “There is nothing I can do about my tribal marks. I was born with them. Whatever I possess, I try to use it to my advantage.

"There are some actors that act like they are disabled or have adopted some traits just to stand out. Having tribal marks is not shameful, because God created everyone well. What causes depression for some people is if they are turned down because of a physical feature. EPL: Iheanacho nominated for Player of The Month again

Leicester City forward Kelechi Iheanacho has once again been nominated for the English Premier League Player of The Month award.

The Nigerian won the award for the month of March and is in contention to claim it again for the month of April.

Due to his impressive form in 2021, Brendan Rogers started Iheanacho in all his side’s five EPL matches last month, with The Foxes winning two, drew one and lost two to earn seven points from a possible 15.

COVID-19: FG to procure 29.5 million doses of Johnson & Johnson vaccine, releases N29.1bn

The Minister of Finance, Budget and National Planning, Zainab Ahmed, has said the supplementary budget being prepared by her ministry will cover the cost of procuring and delivering 29.588 million doses of the Johnson & Johnson COVID-19 vaccine.

According to a statement by her Special Adviser, Media and Communications to the Minister, Yunusa Abdullahi, on Friday, the minister disclosed this at the 18th Collaborative Africa Budget Reform Initiative webinar.

The statement was titled ‘FG committed to procuring 29.588 million doses of the Johnson & Johnson vaccine.’

“The supplementary budget for COVID-19 vaccines will cover the cost of additional vaccines over and above those provided by COVAX, as well as the full cost of operations and logistics for delivering the vaccines around the country,” the minister was quoted as saying,” it said.

Head injuries: Doctor advises Osimhen against memory loss

In the wake of his latest head injury in Serie A, sports doctor Bukola Ojuwoye has urged Napoli striker Victor Osimhen to be careful, warning that persistent concussions could lead to memory loss in the future.

The Nigeria international suffered a nasty collision, which required bandages to his head in the Partenopei’s 1-1 draw against Cagliari on Sunday and was replaced in the 75th minutes by Dries Mertens, making it the second time that he had suffered such injury in two months.

Palace guard kills policeman as Osun dwellers clash over land

A policeman, Corporal Akinsanya Akingbade, was on Friday shot dead, as residents of Ile Ogbo and Iwo, in Osun State, clashed over boundary.

According to an eyewitness, the clashes occurred around Oke Saaji area along Iwo/Ile Ogbo Road, when some youths mounted a roadblock on the road.

The death of late Akingbade, attached to Olu of Ile Ogbo, Oba Abeeb Agbaje, reportedly occurred when he was reportedly shot by a local guard also working with the monarch.

Some people were also said to have sustained injuries during the clash which lasted some hours before police operatives deployed to the area could restore normalcy.

It was jubilation galore as 27 kidnapped students of the Federal College of Forestry Mechanisation, Kaduna were reunited with their families after 56 days in captivity.

Tears of joy flowed freely from both parents and their children. At about 3pm, the entire premises of the college, located along the Kaduna International Airport, opposite the Nigerian Defence Academy, erupted in jubilation as the students were being escorted by heavily-armed policemen in company with the state Commissioner for Internal Security and Home Affairs, Samuel Aruwan, and the state Commissioner of Police, Umar Muri.

Narrating their ordeal in the kidnappers’ den, one of the freed students, Zakariya Magaji, described the kidnappers’ den as hell, saying he would never wish the experience for his enemies.

War against okada: Lagos Taskforce seizes 91 bikes [Photos]

The Lagos State Taskforce has impounded 91 motorcycles, popularly known as okada in a renewed onslaught to stop them from plying prohibited routes across the State.

The okadas were impounded at Cele Bus Stop, on Oshodi-Apapa Expressway on Friday.

“A total of 91 bikes were impounded when officers of the Lagos task force combed Cele- Mile 2 expressway earlier today.

“This is in line with the clampdown on motorcyclist plying routes restricted for motorcycle in Lagos,” the Taskforce said on its Instagram page.

So sad! Aisha Alhassan, Mama Taraba is dead

Aisha Alhassan, former Minister of Women Affairs, popularly known as Mama Taraba, is dead.

Details of are death are still sketchy but it was gathered that she died at a hospital in Egypt.

The deceased battled a protracted illness in her last years.

Alhassan contested the Taraba 2015 governorship election under the Platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC) but lost to incumbent Governor Darius Ishaku, who ran under the platform of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP).

Shortly after her loss, President Muhammadu Buhari named her Minister of Women Affairs.

Dare Adeboye to be buried Tuesday, May 11th

Pastor Dare Adeboye, one of the sons of the General Overseer of The Redeemed Christian Church of God, RCCG, Pastor Enoch Adeboye, will be buried on Tuesday at the Redemption Camp.

Dare died in his sleep on Tuesday at the age of 42.

According to the burial arrangement announced by the Adeboye family today, Dare would be buried on Tuesday, May 11.

The funeral rites would begin on Sunday, May 9, with a special service at the City of David Youth Church in Eket, Akwa Ibom where the deceased pastored.

Italy-bound suspected drug trafficker, Okoguale Douglas has excreted 59 wraps of Heroin after he was busted at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja.

Douglas, 23, was trying to board a Milan, Italy bound flight when he was arrested by officials of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, NDLEA.

He excreted 59 wraps of Heroin weighing 781.2 grammes of Heroin.

Breaking! Supreme Court declares dissolution of local Government in Oyo illegal

The Supreme Court on Friday declared the dissolution of local government administrations in Oyo State and their replacement with caretaker committees as illegal.

The Association of Local Government Of Nigeria (ALGON), Oyo State chapter, had appealed the judgment of the Appeal Court in Ibadan sacking chairmen of local governments and Local Council Development Areas in the state by Governor Seyi Makinde.

The chairmen operating under the auspices of the ALGON elected in 2018 were sacked on May 29, 2019 by Governor Makinde.

Police arrest two fake soldiers including a woman in Delta

Ag. Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Bright Edafe, in a statement, made available to journalists, on Friday said suspected cultists and murderers were also arrested and several arms and ammunition recovered.

“On the 5/5/2021 at about 1300hrs, we received an information that a woman Jemilia Suleman ‘f’ age 48yrs, a native of Plateau State with one Monagor Charles ‘m’ age 61yrs of Ndokwa East L.G Area Delta State were found wearing military uniforms and lodged in Beji Court Hotel Bendel Estate Off Airport road Effurun.

“The DPO Ogborikoko Division, CSP Martha Ikong, detailed and led Surveillance operative in conjunction with military personnel to the hotel and arrested the suspects.

“Items recovered from them includes 10 pairs of military camouflage uniforms, six T-shirt, jungle caps, one T-shirt and one singlet.

Supreme Court sweeps out 74 political parties, backs INEC

The Supreme Court on Friday endorsed the ruling by the Court of Appeal in support of delisting of National Unity Party (NUP) and 73 other political parties.

In the judgment delivered by Justice Chima Centus Nweze, the Supreme Court, on Friday, said delisting of NUP, one of the 74 parties, was in line with the laws.

It was also in compliance with the extant provisions of the Constitution and Electoral Act.

On 7 February 2020, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) deregistered the political parties over their inability to win any election during the 2019 general elections.

Passengers burnt to death in Lagos-Ibadan expressway accident

The Ogun Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Corps (TRACE) has said an unspecified number of persons were burnt to death in an auto crash on the Lagos-Ibadan expressway.

Mr Babatunde Akinbiyi, the spokesperson for TRACE, said this at a media briefing in Abeokuta on Friday.

He said the accident involved a silver Toyota RAV 4, with registration number, LND 13 GS, a silver Toyota Camry marked, GGE 369 GJ, and a Mazda bus with an unidentified number.

Akinbiyi said the accident occurred at 8:20 p.m. on Thursday night.

Police, Okada riders clash in Lagos

Pandemonium broke out in Ogba, Lagos on Friday morning over the alleged shooting of a motorcyclist also known as Okada rider by a police officer.

A resident of the area said the unrest started yesterday when a police officer refused to pay for the service rendered to him by an Okada rider.

The anonymous added that two people were allegedly killed last night.

“It’s a bike man vs policemen fight. An Okada rider rendered a service to a policeman yesterday, then asked for money after dropping him off. He was shot by the policeman who refused to pay him.

Sixth grade girl opens fire at middle school in Idaho, injuring 3

A female middle school student opened fire on classmates in Rigby, Idaho, on Thursday, officials said.

Two students and one adult were injured, police said. The adult was treated and released from Eastern Idaho Regional Medical Center, while the two students -- one girl and one boy -- had non-life-threatening injuries, officials said.

Both will remain in the hospital overnight, and may require surgery, hospital officials said at a press conference.

The sixth grader removed a handgun from her backpack and began firing just after 9 a.m., the Jefferson County Sheriff's Office said at the press conference. Two people were shot in a school hallway, before she moved outside and another person was shot, the sheriff's office said.

Pastor Adeboye makes first appearance after son’s death

The General Overseer of the Redeemed Christian Church of God, Pastor Enoch Adeboye preached virtually at the church's Holy Communion service on Thursday. 

This is despite the loss of his third son, Dare, who died on Tuesday in his sleep.

#EndSARS mayhem cost insurance firms N4 billion - NIA

The Nigerian Insurers Association (NIA) said insurance companies paid N4 billion as claims arising from over 2,000 businesses affected by the mayhem that followed the #EndSARS protests.

Ganiyu Musa, Chairman of the NIA, disclosed this at a news conference in Lagos on Thursday.

Mr Musa also assured customers that all genuine claims emanating from the protests would be paid.

He stated insurance operators were still collating claims stressing that every genuine claim would be settled.

“The number of insured businesses that were affected at the last count was about 2,000 insured loss, and the industry has settled N4 billion claims out of N4.5 billion in respect of the #EndSARS protests.

Suspended NPA boss Hadiza Usman under investigation

President Muhammadu Buhari says he approved the removal of Hadiza Usman, the Nigerian Ports Authority’s Managing Director, to investigate the agency’s management.

Buhari said her removal followed a recommendation by Rotimi Amaechi, the Minister of Transportation. 

Ms Hadiza will face an administrative panel of inquiry to investigate the management of NPA.

According to a statement by the president’s media aide, Garba Shehu, late Thursday night in Abuja, said,” The president has also approved that the Managing Director, Hadiza Bala Usman step aside while the investigation is carried out. Mr Mohammed Koko will act in that position.

Man mourns after losing wife who just gave birth to twins

A man has taking to twitter to mourn the sudden death of his wife.

The man who took to the social media platform says it's very heartbreaking seeing his wife die just after putting to bed their set of twins.

He says he doubts if he would be able to pull through, but twitter users encouraged him and prayed for him.

He tweeted: "Seeing my wife's lifeless body breaks my heart, she never had the opportunity to hold her beautiful twins. I am SHATTERED, TRAUMATIZED & so AFRAID if I will be able to scale through this alone. She died in my arms."

Cops repel attack on Imo police station, kill eight hoodlums

Joint security operatives on Thursday night killed no fewer than eight hoodlums after they resisted an attack on Orlu Divisional Police Headquarters in Imo state from unknown gunmen.

Also, the joint security operatives recovered seven vehicles the attackers came in for the operation.

Punch gathered that the gun battle between the gunmen and the security operatives lasted several hours, as the military sent reinforcement from the 34 artillery brigade, Obinze, in Owerri.

The gun duel created an atmosphere of panic, as people scampered for safety, as the Roads in Orlu town and its environs were deserted.

There are plans by terrorist groups, Al-Qaeda and ISIS to penetrate Southern Nigeria, the United States has warned the Nigerian government.

The US says the dreaded groups are looking to make an inroad into Southern Nigeria, this is just as It confirmed that Al-Qaeda has started penetrating the north-western part of the country. In a media briefing, Dagvin Anderson, Commander of the US special operations command, Africa, said AlQaeda is also expanding to other parts of West Africa. 

According to report obtained from TheCable, Anderson said the US will continue to partner with Nigeria in sharing intelligence “We have engaged with Nigeria and continue to engage with them in intel sharing and in understanding what these violent extremists are doing,” he said.

Twitter suspends several accounts sharing posts from Trump's website

Twitter has suspended several accounts that have been set up to share posts from Donald Trump's website.

The micro-blogging site said the accounts broke the rules by helping the former president to circumvent a ban from the social network.

Mr Trump was banned from a number of platforms after his supporters stormed the US Capitol on 6 January

Twitter, where he had 88 million followers, has said its ban is permanent, regardless of whether or not Mr Trump runs for office in future.

Jagaban: Fela’s family hints at lawsuit against APC

The relative of the Afrobeat pioneer, Fela Anikulapo Kuti has condemned the use of the music legend’s name/image on clothes bearing ‘Jagaban’.

Jagaban is one of the nicknames of a prominent politician and former Lagos Governor, Bola Tinubu.

The traditional title was conferred on the All Progressives Congress (APC) leader by the Emir of Borgu in Niger State, Haliru Dantoro Kitoro.

Why freed students of Kaduna forestry college not released to parents

The Kaduna state government said on Thursday night that the 27 freed students of Federal College of Forestry Mechanization have not been released to their parents.

Samuel Aruwan, Commissioner for Internal Security and Home Affairs, Kaduna State said the students are still undergoing basic rehabilitation.

He also said they are undergoing debriefing, medical checks and psychological evaluation.

“As such they will not be released to their families today, Thursday 6th May 2021”, Aruwan said.

Halima Cisse’s nine babies to spend 2-3 months in incubators: Doctors

Doctors at the Ain Borja clinic in Casablanca, Morocco, said the world record nine babies born on Tuesday by Malian Halima Cisse, are expected to spend at least “two to three months” in incubators.

Each newborn, five girls and four boys, reportedly weighed between 500 grams and 1 kilogram (1.1 pounds and 2.2 pounds) upon birth.

The clinic’s medical director, Youssef Alaoui, declared the case “extremely rare” and “exceptional,” according to a BBC report.

Cisse had her babies by cesarean section at 30 weeks, with 10 doctors and 25 paramedics assisting the operation, during which she suffered heavy bleeding.

Siblings nabbed for Internet fraud, love scam

Operatives of the Lagos Zonal Office of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission have arrested two siblings for their alleged involvement in Internet fraud.

The suspects, Queen and Rowland Kalu, were arrested on Wednesday, May 5, 2021, at the Amikanle, Alagbado area of Lagos State.

The EFCC, in a statement on Thursday, said Queen, a graduate of Banking and Finance, confessed to the crime, adding that she was involved in online dating and made money from the crime.

She also allegedly disclosed that she helped her brothers, including one Prince Kalu, now at large, to speak to male victims and defraud them of their money.

SS2 girl missing in Abuja school after permission to fix uniform

A 15-year-old student of the Ceder International College, Abuja, Nimota Olatunde, has gone missing while trying to repair her torn school uniform.

Punch Metro gathered that the disappearance of the student had caused panic among her family members and friends.

Olatunde’s mother, Juliana Olajide, who lives in Jos, said on Thursday that her daughter had not been seen since the past one week after she took permission to fix her torn skirt by the school gate.

She said, “It is now eight days since we last saw my 15-year-old daughter, Nimota Olatunde, who is in SS 2 class at Ceder International College, Abuja.

Fire guts Cairo Market in Oshodi, Lagos [Video]

Fire on Thursday night gutted the Cairo Market in the Oshodi-Isolo Local Government Area of Lagos State.

It was gathered that the fire, whose cause was yet to be known as of the time of filing this report, affected the textile section of the market.

Spokesperson for Lagos State Emergency Management Agency, Nosa Okunbor, told The Punch that emergency responders have arrived the scene and are battling to contain the fire.

He said, “Upon arrival at the scene of incident, it was observed that some shops were on fire. The cause of the fire is unknown as at the time of writing this report.
